Tri-City Democrats – Friday, November 14, 6:00 PM
Greetings fellow Democrats!
It’s getting cold out, so we’re going to move indoors for our winter gatherings. This month we’ll meet at the round Table Pizza on Court Street in Pasco. November 14 at 6pm Pacific. Come gather with like-minded folks and share some fellowship, food and beverages. As is our normal practice, Tri-City Democrats will order several pizzas to share. We’ll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group. Some of our generous members are likely to purchase pitchers of beer to share. If you want the salad bar or soft drinks, you are on your own for those items.
At this writing, we do not have a planned program, but we will have ‘Hate Has no Home Here’ signs available. We are also in the process of proposing some minor alterations to our bylaws, which we may discuss briefly and possibly vote on.

FAQ from A Better Richland
Richland registered voters will vote this November to update the Richland City Council election process to be like the rest of Washington’s First-Class Cities, Pasco, and Kennewick.
Currently all seven members of the Richland council are elected “at-large.” They can live anywhere in the city. A vote to change the city charter would mean five council members would have to be elected from the districts where they live and two would still be elected “at-large”. Each of the five proposed districts would have approximately 12,000 residents. An interactive map on our website can show you in which district you would live.

We’re gearing up for our 9th Annual Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Day (IRAD), and we want to ensure that everyone can make their voices heard as we convene in Olympia to demand WA lawmakers stand up for immigrant communities in this moment.
Before we head to Olympia in January, join us on Saturday, November 15th, from 1:30 – 3:30 pm for WAISN’s Advocacy and Art Day! Together, we’ll be creating posters and artwork that we’ll take with us to IRAD to amplify our collective voice at the Capitol.
Art has always been a core pillar of our movements for change. It’s a powerful way to uplift the voices of marginalized communities, giving them a way to tell their stories authentically.
Community members, advocates, and artists are coming together in two locations — Pasco and Seattle — so you can join the event closest to you.
Both gatherings will be dedicated to creating art and posters that uplift the importance of immigrant access to healthcare, defense against deportation, and the right to living freely and with the dignity that everyone deserves.
When we create together, we remind ourselves and our communities that the path to justice is a shared fight.
In solidarity,
The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network

This past January, we made history together.
Over 600 immigrants, refugees, and allies filled the streets of Olympia and the halls of the capitol for WAISN’s largest-ever Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Day (IRAD). Shoulder to shoulder, we met with more than 90 legislators to demand what every one of us deserves: access to healthcare, earned benefits if we lose our jobs, safety, and dignity.
It was a day bursting with power and joy: with community members from across the state arriving from Wenatchee, Yakima, and the Tri-Cities; voices rising in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Mam; children, elders, and workers united in purpose. Across 38 districts and 19 counties, we showed what solidarity looks like in action.

Across the country, attacks on immigrants are escalating. Yet here in Washington, we’ve continued to organize and secure major legislative wins and protections for immigrant communities, proving that a better future is possible. One built on courage, community, and care.
Your donation to IRAD helps ensure community members from across the state can once again gather in Olympia and advocate for their communities:
❤️🔥 $26 helps fund hand warmers for attendees who wait in the cold to speak truth to power
🗣️ $50 supports our Language Justice team, so that every voice is heard and everyone can fully participate
🚌 $100 fuels the buses bringing families to the capitol from Eastern, Central, and Western Washington.
🍲 $500 helps ensure our attendees and volunteers have access to food, prayer spaces, lactation rooms, and menstrual care throughout the event.
We will keep building a Washington where every immigrant and refugee belongs, where our voices shape policy, and where joy is an act of resistance.
With determination and gratitude,
The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network
[ENGLISH ABOVE]

Help Us Keep the Door Open for Every Future Leader
In moments like these, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The pace and harm of national politics, the cruelty, chaos, and fear many communities feel, it can make it hard to know what to do.
But we can take action right now by supporting the WAIDF Scholarship Fund.
Your gift helps ensure cost is never the reason someone can’t say “yes” to the Washington Institute for a Democratic Future. Every dollar reduces tuition, offsets travel for fellows across the state, and helps our cohorts reflect the full diversity of Washington’s communities.
This season, we’re working to raise $10,000 by December 31 for the Class of 2026.
Together, we can meet this moment with determination, because every fellow we support is one more leader ready to defend democracy, strengthen communities, and build a more just future for Washington State
Give today to the WAIDF Scholarship Fund.

There’s a lot of talk about “centrism” in politics — but what is “the center” really about? Is it about splitting the difference between the far-right and far-left? Or is it about standing for things that are broadly popular and broadly beneficial?
Centrism can mean a lot of different things, but as Civic Action founder Nick Hanauer argues in The New Republic, the neoliberal centrism that has long dominated our politics is fundamentally about balancing the interests of the very wealthy with the interests of everyone else.
The neoliberal centrism of splitting differences is how you end up with a federal minimum wage stagnant at $7.25 for 15 years — it’s right in the center of the $0 that wealthy extremists want, and the $15/hour that’s overwhelmingly popular.
That’s not centrism, that’s defending the status quo.
But there’s also another kind of center — a majoritarian center that’s focused on centering the interests of the majority of people. It’s not about splitting differences — it’s about pursuing policies that are broadly popular and broadly beneficial.
That’s what true majoritarian centrism is about. It’s the neoliberal center that’s actually extreme.
Check out Nick’s piece, share it with friends & family, and let us know what you think.

On Election Night, gun safety advocates overwhelmingly showcased their commitment to ending gun violence by powering our endorsed candidates to victories across Washington. With growing uncertainty on the federal level, it’s reassuring to know that Washingtonians are continuing to show up for their communities to elect gun violence prevention champions up and down the ballot.
The Alliance for Gun Responsibility would like to congratulate all of our endorsed candidates for waging campaigns that prioritized public safety. Our victories now create the opportunity for us to achieve meaningful change around the issues that unite us.
In Seattle, our supporters helped drive historic wins that elected gun violence prevention champions including: Erika Evans, Seattle City Attorney, Dionne Foster and Alexis Mercedes Rinck, Seattle City Council, and Girmay Zahilay, King County Executive.
We are excited to welcome and work with these newly emboldened leaders of the gun safety movement.
In Maine, gun safety advocates turned out in support of Question 2, which creates an Extreme Risk Protection Order law. Also known as Red Flag laws, this policy allows families to take control of their loved ones’ safety. We were honored to collaborate with our state partner organization, the Maine Gun Safety Coalition, to add Maine to the list of the over 20 states nationwide with Red Flag laws.
We’d once again like to thank the thousands of volunteers and advocates who made phone calls, sent text messages, and knocked on many, many doors. Our collective action continues to make meaningful strides and produce real results. Together, we will continue fighting for responsible gun and community violence intervention laws, and working with elected officials committed to ending preventable gun violence.
With gratitude,
Alliance for Gun Responsibility Team

Halloween should be a night of fun, not fear. But in too many communities, celebrations are overshadowed by the reality of unsecured firearms and preventable tragedies.
Pledge $20 to protect vulnerable communities.
We are working every day to make sure safety isn’t seasonal. Through education, advocacy, and partnerships, we’re helping families secure firearms safely, supporting community-based violence intervention programs, and passing laws that save lives year-round.
Your support makes this work possible. Every donation, whether $10 or $100, fuels real solutions that keep families safe long after the candy is gone.
Give now to support safety in every season.

Five years ago, Invest in Washington was founded on a simple belief: that all Washingtonians can thrive when the wealthy pay their fair share.
And we’ve made extraordinary progress in just those five years (see below!) But now, everything we’ve fought for is on the line.
Federal cuts are already impacting working Washingtonians, and while families struggle, some state leaders are already whispering about “belt-tightening” – cuts to education, health care and more.
That’s why we’re asking for your support of our Fight Back Fund, a rapid response effort to protect our progress and push for the next phase of tax fairness in 2026.
Together, we’ve made real progress. With your support, we’ve:
- Won the first progressive revenue measure in 30 years, passing and defending the Capital Gains excise tax.
- Closed tax loopholes for special interests and the wealthiest corporations.
- Advanced a first-in-the-nation wealth tax through one chamber of the Legislature, a major step toward lasting tax justice.
- Built a network of over 120,000 tax justice activists in every corner of the state.
That’s what people power can do. But the challenges working Washingtonians face in the coming year are profound:
- Congress and Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” (HR1) are slashing SNAP benefits and sending healthcare costs for Washington families into a death spiral.
- Across the country, we have seen the highest job loss numbers since 2003, and here in Washington state thousands of tech workers have been laid off.
Even $25 makes a difference – your support helps us:
- Invest in grassroots organizing that builds power.
- Share compelling stories like this one from Reverend Jan Bolerjack that show how policy decisions impact people’s daily lives
- Build the public pressure lawmakers need to do the right thing
Because while families across Washington are paying more at the grocery store and struggling to make ends meet, the wealthiest Washingtonians are about to receive$7 billion in new federal tax breaks.
That’s not just unfair – it’s unsustainable.
You’ve already shown what’s possible when we stand together. Let’s do it again.
Chip in today to keep Washington moving towards a tax system that works for everyone.
With gratitude,
Treasure Mackley

Are you one of many Washingtonians being forced by extremists in Congress to pay a lot more for health insurance premiums or skimp on groceries for your family? Share your experience – or what you’ve heard from friends and family – with your members of Congress, Governor, and state lawmakers by adding your own words to this action email.
Decision makers say sharing our personal experiences makes the biggest difference.
To pay for trillions in tax cuts for billionaires, Washingtonians will soon be paying an extra $129/month, or $1,548 per year on average for the same health insurance coverage they are already getting. In some counties, premiums could double.
And SNAP cuts caused by the government shutdown are impacting more than 930,000 Washingtonians and more than half of those are in families with children.
“Nanette Smith, a Washingtonian who uses the ACA exchange, said that estimates show that her premiums are expected to climb $400 a month — to close to $5,000 a year — which she will have to pay on a fixed income.”
How about you? Are you anticipating a big hike in your insurance costs or worried about feeding your family? Share your concerns with your lawmakers now.
Billionaires, and their friends in Congress, are forcing many of us to choose between groceries and health coverage, and putting more economic pressure on those who can least afford it. Why? To pay for $5.3 TRILLION in tax cuts over the next decade for those who need it least – the mega-rich and big corporations.
It’s up to you – share your experience or what you’ve heard from friends and family. Fill out the form now.
In solidarity,
Treasure

Despite the current administration’s repeated mistreatment of our immigrant community members, we are committed to challenging their unlawful policies and practices in court. And your support is what makes this possible.
One of the many ways NWIRP is stepping up to combat the dramatic expansion of the government’s detention and deportation machine is by filing habeas petitions in federal courts. Habeas petitions are used primarily to request release from unlawful detention. Since the start of the Trump administration NWIRP has filed habeas petitions on behalf of 39 persons unlawfully detained at the detention center in Tacoma.
One of those community members, Rigoberto Hernandez Hernandez, was released earlier this year after his unlawful arrest in August. Rigoberto is a firefighter who lives in Oregon, and was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol at his work site–while on the front lines battling the Bear Gulch fire. When ordered to respond to the habeas complaint filed by NWIRP and Innovation Law Lab, the government agreed to release Rigoberto and dismiss the removal proceedings against him.
In addition, NWIRP has led the way nationally in challenging a new detention policy, by filing two class actions: the first, focused on Tacoma detention center, where the District Court ruled in favor of NWIRP’s clients last month; and the second, a nationwide class that has arguments scheduled tomorrow, November 14, in Riverside, California. In addition, NWIRP has supported dozens of attorneys around the country in filing habeas petitions–by providing habeas templates and mentoring attorneys on their cases. The results have been dramatic both locally and across the country, where more than a hundred court decisions have sided with NWIRP’s arguments challenging the government’s new detention policy as unlawful.
We cannot do this work without you. As we prepare for whatever comes next, please consider making a gift to support our ongoing efforts to protect community members from unlawful detention and deportation.
Thank you. We are so glad you are part of our community.
In Solidarity,

Malou Chávez (she/her/ella)
Executive Director
P.S. Over the summer, Congress approved massive increases to immigration filing fees, making access to safety even more difficult for the communities that we serve. If you would like your donation directed to the payment and processing of filing fees, please indicate this in the dropdown menu on our giving page.

Directora Ejecutiva

To say that it has been a challenging year would be an understatement. The federal administration’s stated goal of mass detention and mass deportation of immigrant communities, supported by the influx of billions of dollars for this purpose, is unprecedented. We are enduring changes in immigration law, policies, and practices that we have not seen in over three decades, with inevitable and significant generational impacts.
Some of these changes include the dramatic increase in fees for immigration applications, the targeting of immigrants for expressing political opinions, the weaponization of federal criminal law against immigrants in civil immigration proceedings, the dangerous militarization of immigration enforcement, and ongoing attempts by the federal government to cease funding for unaccompanied children in deportation proceedings.
NWIRP has been able to fight back against many of these attacks. We have defended thousands of immigrants against deportation, expanded access to justice, and secured legal status for hundreds of people across Washington. We have grown our community outreach efforts by leading over 200 workshops and presentations, reaching thousands of community members. And we have continued to secure legal victories in federal courts, locally and nationwide, both on behalf of individuals and large classes. This year, we have already filed habeas petitions for 35 persons detained in Tacoma, and nationwide class actions on behalf of persons denied bond hearings, and on behalf of persons being threatened with removal to a third country where they face persecution or torture.
As we prepare for the new year, we know we must scale up our ongoing efforts quickly and strategically by expanding NWIRP’s direct legal services and pushing forward with more emergency litigation in federal courts, doing all that we can do to ensure immigrants are not left to face this country’s unjust immigration system alone. And we can’t do it without you.
The work ahead is urgent and may appear overwhelming, but it is necessary and only possible because of your partnership and solidarity. Your support is critical to ensure that there is no doubt in the minds of our client communities—those we serve—that we are here for them and ready to take their calls, gather the evidence, and fight alongside them in court. We must remain vigilant because this administration has proven time and again that they are capable of an unconscionable degree of cruelty.
We deeply appreciate all the ways you have supported our efforts so far. Given today’s urgent needs and the challenges ahead, we would greatly value a financial contribution from you before the end of the year. Will you join us in solidarity by making a donation in support of NWIRP’s work?
By making a gift today, you are investing in justice for our communities. With your support, NWIRP will continue to keep families together, protect people from violence, and provide community members with new opportunities. Together, we can create a lasting impact that will benefit our clients, their loved ones, and future generations, long after this administration leaves office.
In Solidarity,

Malou Chávez (she/her/ella)
Executive Director

If you would like your donation directed to the payment and processing of filing fees, please indicate this in the dropdown menu on our giving page.

“Hospitals will close in Washington state, in rural parts of our state and urban parts of our state,” Ferguson warned last month. “Take that to the bank. That’s going to happen. Nursing homes in our state will close.”
Newhouse is sticking to his story, though, falsely claiming that the Medicaid system is rife with fraud and waste, and that this bill merely cleans up the books and keeps benefits flowing for legitimate recipients.
But Newhouse is no fool. He chose his words carefully before he voted.
He may have promised not to directly cut Medicaid, but he knew full well that’s exactly what H.R. 1 would ultimately mean. Now he’s coldly trying to justify turning his back on the harm this heartless legislation will cause the 4th District.
That’s not just disappointing or dismaying. It’s disgraceful.
Rep. Newhouse can change his vote when this bill comes up again. We know that personal stories and experiences can powerfully persuade members of Congress. Can you share your reasons for opposing Medicaid cuts?
Thank you for all you do!
Sincerely,
Emilio Meraz-Rodriguez

The Washington Health Trust is back in the Senate
The 2025 legislative session has started, and it’s time to contact our elected officials! Once again, Senator Bob Hasegawa from Legislative District 11 has introduced the Washington Health Trust (WHT). We’re incredibly grateful for Senator Hasegawa’s advocacy on this critical issue, and now, it’s time for us to spring into action. We need co-sponsors to the bill ASAP. The deadline for co-sponsors is 5 PM today, so time is of the essence. See the Actions below.
We’re Spreading the Word!

Whole Washington volunteers, Board members, and our Executive Director were in Olympia on opening day, dropping off literature and making contact with office staff. It’s a bustling time in the capitol and a great opportunity for us to create some heat.
As Jim noted, we’re “taking our bill to our legislators before they’re even sworn in.” Thank you to all for your time, passion, and advocacy!
What are the chances for the WHT this year?
We’ve been advised Senate Bill 5233 will not receive a hearing this session. It’s our responsibility and obligation to not go silent. Our healthcare is much too important.
A hearing on comprehensive universal healthcare is more pressing than ever. Washington State has a massive budget shortfall (10 to 12 billion in the coming four years). Opportunites to save money need to be reviewed, and the WHT is just such an opportunity.
Both the Universal Health Care Commission Report and the 2021 Gerald Friedman analysis, show significant savings (anywhere from 738 million to 12 billion, depending on the model) while providing expanded benefits like vision, dental, and mental health services. We’d feel better and we’d save money. It’d be negligent to ignore a close review of the bill at this time.
What actions do we take right now?
There’s plenty we can do to press the WHT forward. Right now, these are the two big ones.
- Make Online Comments in support of the bill. Click on the top green button on the right that says Send a comment on this bill to your legislators. You’ll click the Support button and add your personal comments. Remember to send to your Senator plus both House Representative
- Contact your elected officials. This is the most vital action you can do today! Call or write them and let them know you support this Universal Healthcare bill. Ask your Senator to co-sponsor SB 5233 as soon as possible. Ask your Representatives to introduce a companion bill. Need help finding contact info? Use the District Finder here.
Reach out to Republicans and Independents too. Universal Healthcare is good for all of us!
Please reply back to this email if you make contact or leave a message. We’d love to hear what actions you’re taking and what you’re hearing from their offices.
Want to know more about the new WHT?
Join us tomorrow for the Virtual Town Hall! We’ll cover what’s different, share our stories, and plan together how to make the most of this moment!
Thank you so much for anything and everything you put in today to make some noise and increase the awareness for this legislation. This is not Whole Washington’s bill. It’s Washington’s bill. We can make our lives better. We just have to demand it.
In passionate and hopeful solidarity,
Whole Washington

One Million Rising Registrants,
After an incredible summer of organizing together and building our capacity to fight authoritarianism into the future, join us for our final One Million Rising call this Wednesday, October 8, at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
Many of you have been taking part in our Signs of Solidarity, Ground Avelo, and other One Million Rising campaigns. Come hear more about how they’ve been going, how you can stay plugged in, and how they’ve evolved as you’ve been spreading strategic non-cooperation across the country.
The highlight of this call will be our launch of the Courage Collectives.
For One Million Rising, we talked about how the best way to fight authoritarianism isn’t by aiming at the top, but through addressing the pillars upholding the regime. Those pillars can be houses of faith, educational institutions, military branches, and any number of other organizations, societies, or groupings of people that hold community power. But we didn’t talk about how to organize to address these pillars.
Unlike your typical organizing model, pillars-based organizing may not be local. As an example, alumni of a university that is upholding the agenda of an authoritarian administration may be located across the country. Come learn how we’ll be organizing pillars-based communities with our Courage Collectives. **Bonus: We’ll also be giving a training on what power mapping is and how to connect it to your pillars-based organizing work.
After the October 8 call, One Million Rising will wind down as a freestanding program, and the infrastructure and campaigns will fold back into the No Kings movement, the new Courage Collectives, and other organizing paths we’ll share on the call. Join us this Wednesday to learn more.
Thank you for growing this movement with us,
The One Million Rising Team

It’s official: We just filed our brief to protect transgender kids at the Supreme Court.
Our client, Becky Pepper-Jackson, is a 15 year old girl who just wants the same opportunities as any other kid. But she lives in West Virginia – where a 2021 law bans her from playing school sports because she’s trans.
Becky is the only openly trans kid playing sports in the state – but she’s not alone.
27 states across the country have passed similar bans since 2020. These bans make bullying, harassment, and humiliation the law of the land, opening the door to transphobic witchhunts for trans and cis kids alike. Many of these states require invasive sex testing that orders kids as young as 12 to “prove” their sex by submitting detailed medical records about their weight, their anatomy, and even their menstrual cycles or submitting to physical inspections if they want to play a sport.
Every kid should be allowed to grow up with the freedom to be themselves on and off the field.
These bans are a continuation of the Trump administration’s attempts to push trans people out of public life entirely – censoring our speech, threatening our health care, and forcing schools to drop policies protecting trans kids.
We can’t let these attacks go unchallenged – which is exactly why we’ll be arguing this case at the Supreme Court in January. As long as there are threats to our rights, the ACLU will always be there to fight back.
We’ll keep in touch with the latest on this major case and more ways you can join this fight with us. Thanks for all you do to support this critical work. And to the Trump administration – we’ll see you in court.

Our legal team has been working hard this week to keep the Trump administration in check – fighting to protect immigrants against extreme abuse and to keep troops off our streets. Here’s the latest:
- We’re suing ICE – again – for detaining people in inhumane living conditions.
This time, we’re taking them to court over conditions at California’s largest immigrant detention center. People are being kept in isolation, denied basic necessities like adequate food or clean water, and facing severe abuse from staff members, including getting pepper-sprayed and receiving sexually abusive pat-downs.
The people we’re representing are being denied basic medical care – one of our clients likely has cancer but has gone months without seeing a specialist or getting any treatment, while another has received such substandard care for his diabetes that he now has an open ulcer. Meanwhile, access to lawyers is extremely limited.
This is just another example of ICE’s utter disregard for the rights and dignity of the people in its custody. Everyone is entitled to food, medical care, and legal counsel – and we’ll keep fighting to hold these facilities accountable. - We’re supporting the state of Illinois’ lawsuit against the Trump administration.
Earlier this week, we filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court with the ACLU of Illinois and other free speech groups, urging the Court to maintain a lower court’s block on President Trump’s federalization and deployment of National Guard troops into Chicago.
Just like in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, these deployments are a clear attempt to intimidate our communities and stifle our First Amendment rights. But we all have a right to criticize our government, and the military should never be used to chill our freedom to protest peacefully.
While the year may be winding down, we’re just getting started. The ACLU stays ready to protect our rights at every turn – and we’re glad to have you with us.
Together,
The ACLU Team

Extremists know what we know: when Democratic women lead, we change everything.
We protect our freedoms. We expand opportunity. We bring integrity and compassion to the rooms where decisions get made.
That’s why Republicans are gerrymandering districts, passing bans, and flooding elections with dark money.
They can’t win when the playing field is fair.
Every woman we train is another voice they can’t silence, another leader they can’t stop, another election they can’t buy.
First-time Emerge candidates are six times more likely to win their races. That’s not a statistic — that’s proof this movement works.
They’re afraid because they should be. We’re not backing down.

When Emerge alum Congresswoman LaMonica McIver said those words, she wasn’t speaking hypothetically.
Trump’s Justice Department is trying to send a sitting member of Congress to prison for doing her job.
Congresswoman McIver was conducting oversight at a New Jersey detention facility when federal agents tried to arrest her. Now she’s facing 17 years behind bars for standing up to power.
Congresswoman McIver is right: They are going to keep targeting people who hold them accountable.
Emerge exists so women like Congresswoman McIver don’t stand alone when they take on power.
Now, we’re training the next class of Democratic women who will lead with the same courage and conviction, even when the risks are high.

The Epstein emails are out — and they confirm what women have known forever: predators stick together.
Epstein wrote that Trump “knew about the girls”, lingered with victims, and was “dirty” long before the public caught up. The irony is that the proof is in emails. (But his emails!)

Dear MoveOn member,
It’s Ben from Ben & Jerry’s.
In September, Jerry made one of the hardest and most painful decisions he’s ever made: He stepped down from the company that we started 47 years ago. Why? Because Unilever, the company that acquired Ben & Jerry’s in 2000, now called The Magnum Ice Cream Company, has been silencing Ben & Jerry’s when the brand has tried to speak out about social injustices and progressive values. It’s unacceptable.
It was always about more than just ice cream: Love, equity, justice—they’re part of who Jerry and I are, and they’ve always been the true foundation of Ben & Jerry’s. We cannot let those values be simply discarded under political pressure from the Trump administration and strongman politics. In response to corporate attempts to censor the brand we built, we’re fighting back to #FreeBenandJerrys.
When Unilever acquired Ben & Jerry’s in 2000, we made sure that they set up an independent board so Ben & Jerry’s could continue living its values and social justice work without corporate interference.
And Ben & Jerry’s did continue living its values: in opposing crimes against humanity, speaking out against white supremacy, supporting marriage equality, demanding climate justice, and insisting that businesses have responsibilities beyond profitability. But Unilever didn’t keep its promise and instead is silencing the voice of Ben & Jerry’s.
We’ve seen firsthand how corporate control breaks promises to allow independent political thought, we’ve seen how they squelch free speech, and we see how corporations cozy up to would-be autocrats. We can’t allow it, so we must #FreeBenandJerrys.
We can’t and won’t let big corporations silence our collective voices and power. That’s why we demand that Unilever must stop silencing Ben & Jerry’s and let it live its values and social mission.
Will you join us?
Wondering what this pro-ceasefire sorbet is all about? Well, it’s related to the same thing we’re advocating for with this petition. A while back, Ben & Jerry’s tried to make an ice cream flavor to call for peace in Palestine, to stand for justice and dignity for everyone, like Ben & Jerry’s always has, but they weren’t allowed to. They were blocked by Unilever/Magnum, the company that owns Ben & Jerry’s.
So I’m doing what they couldn’t. I’m making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing all of the damage that was done there. And I’m doing this to shine a light on the experience of Palestinian people, so the world does not look the other way. Palestinians deserve dignity, safety, and the same rights that all humans should have.
It’s also no surprise that all of this is happening at a time when our country’s current administration is attacking Black and brown communities and taking away our civil rights, voting rights, the rights of immigrants, women, and the LGBTQIA+ community.
Sticking up for the values of justice, equity, and our shared humanity has never been more important—and yet Ben & Jerry’s has been silenced, sidelined for fear of upsetting those in power. It’s easy to stand up and speak out when there’s nothing at risk. The real test of values is when times are challenging and you have something to lose. But we can do something about it.
Thanks for all you do.
–Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s

Dear MoveOn member,
The sleeping giant of America is up and roaring.
I know many of you are disappointed right now that Democrats just caved to Republicans on the budget. I’m disappointed, too. But, let’s take a longer view.
In last week’s elections, Americans spoke up—loudly and clearly. They voted for affordability and acted on their near-historic disapproval of Donald Trump.
According to new polling from The Economist and YouGov, a strong majority of Americans—58%—disapprove of Trump, while only 39% approve.1
This approval number is the lowest it has been since his inauguration.2
He’s flailing on the economy. He hasn’t done squat to help working people. The Epstein scandal haunts him.
Remember that every authoritarian action Trump is taking must be understood against the backdrop of his declining popularity.
Like any bully, when Trump feels humiliated, he lashes out. And we can expect him to escalate even more after Tuesday’s elections. But what he doesn’t realize is that his authoritarianism and his bullying have woken up America’s great sleeping giant.
No Kings on October 18 was the largest single day of protest in American history.
Bigger than the Women’s March of 2017.
Bigger than any protest against the war in Iraq.
Bigger even than Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic March on Washington.
But our mass movement is just getting started. Historical studies suggest that 3.5% of a population engaged in sustained nonviolent resistance can topple even the most brutal dictatorships.3
Which means we’re making significant progress.
My friends at MoveOn are at the heart of the mass, nonviolent movement against authoritarianism. They were instrumental in planning, coordinating, and executing No Kings Day—and their plans for what’s next are bold and just what our country needs in this moment.
But they need your help to sustain and build on the momentum. Will you donate $5 a month to MoveOn to continue to scale up the trainings, organizing, outreach, and events needed to grow and nurture the movement to end Trump’s authoritarianism once and for all?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
The resistance is becoming an uprising.
It’s not just No Kings. Other evidence of the backlash is all around us.
Last Tuesday, 99.8% of the counties that held partisan elections shifted toward Democrats.4
Seven of the nine universities Trump selected to join his extortion compact—offering preferential treatment for federal funds in exchange for a pledge to support his agenda—have rejected it.5
Millions of Americans came together to boycott Disney and stand up to attacks on free speech after Trump attacked Jimmy Kimmel.
Most major airports have refused to show Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s propaganda video attacking Democrats for the government shutdown.6
Almost all of America’s news outlets have refused to sign Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s media loyalty oath.7
I believe future generations will look back on this scourge and see not just what was destroyed but also what was born: a mass movement against authoritarianism.
Many of you are now sowing the seeds of this movement.
Whether it’s demonstrating as you’ve done at protests and rallies, appearing at Republican town halls, jamming the Capitol and White House switchboards, generating mountains of emails and letters, or protecting the vulnerable in your communities, your activism is paying off.
Rest assured, the backlash against Trump is growing.
Yes, these are terrible times—the worst I’ve lived through, and I’ve lived through some bad ones. (Remember 1968? Nixon’s enemies list? Anyone else old enough to recall Joe McCarthy’s communist witch hunts?)
But as long as we are alive, as long as we are resolved, as long as we are taking action to stop the worst of this, as long as we are trying to make America and the world even a bit better, have no doubt: We will triumph.
Will you donate $5 a month to MoveOn to help bring many more people into our movement, build and strengthen local, state, and national networks and coalitions fighting Trump’s tyranny, and help us begin to turn the corner to end MAGA’s reign and build a better future for all of us?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
Thanks for all you do.

March For Our Lives Virtual Events

The agency meant to stop illegal guns is being pulled off that job right now:

TL;DR ATF agents who used to investigate shady gun dealers are being reassigned to immigration raids and city patrols. Inspectors who could shut down dangerous sellers are gone. Enforcement has been slashed while the people who profit from guns keep operating.
That means more illegal guns on our streets, more weapons flowing to cartels, and more kids at risk.
An anonymous ATP investigator shared, “They’re de-regulating an industry that sells tools that can take people’s lives in seconds.”
March For Our Lives is organizing young leaders to expose this and demand accountability. We train organizers, run campaigns, and keep pressure on officials who choose political theater over public safety.
But none of that happens without resources from advocates like you.
Will you chip in $10 right now to power organizers fighting to keep guns out of the wrong hands?
Thank you for standing with survivors and young leaders.

Hi,
Last week, voters across the country sent a clear, powerful message:
Gun safety wins. Hope wins. Our movement can win.
From Virginia to Maine, from New York City to Atlanta, Americans showed up and voted for leaders who believe that our lives are worth protecting. Here are some of our big wins:
- Abigail Spanberger was elected Governor of Virginia.
- Zohran Mamdani was elected Mayor of New York City.
- Mikie Sherrill was elected Governor of New Jersey.
- Mayor Michelle Wu was re-elected in Boston.
- Mayor Andre Dickens won re-election in Atlanta.
- Aftab Pureval was elected Mayor of Cincinnati.
- Mary Sheffield was elected Mayor of Detroit.
- Pennsylvania retained all three of its Supreme Court seats.
- Georgia flipped two Public Service Commission seats.
- Maine voters approved a red flag law that makes it easier for family members to petition a court to restrict a potentially dangerous person’s access to guns.
Each of these victories represents more than a victory at the ballot box — they represent lives saved, communities strengthened, and a future where every young person can feel safe at school, at the movies, or at home.
Our movement at March For Our Lives was born from tragedy, but we won’t let the gun lobby wear us down and make us give up on this fight. We will use these victories to recharge, regroup, and refocus our energies.
Are you with us?
With hope,
March For Our Lives

My name is Amara, and I’ve been a SURJ Circle leader for the past year because I want this country to be a place where all people are welcomed and safe — and I know we can’t get there unless white people take action.
SURJ Circles are small, in-person organizing groups that meet monthly to strengthen our organizing skills and take coordinated local actions that move our campaigns forward and grow our movement. I joined my Circle because of election results, but the focus on relationships — along with a culture where I can bring my ideas, perspective, and strengths while receiving coaching and guidance — is why I stay.
Since we began, our Atlanta Circle (alongside others across the country) has been bringing in thousands of white people to take antiracist action. Will you donate to support SURJ Circles today so we can continue to develop antiracist white leaders like me across the country?
A few months ago, as our elections Circle met, I overheard group members expressing anxiety about door-knocking because none of them had done it before. The group discussed whether it was an important tactic for them to take on, and shared their anxieties and doubts — but then I heard someone speak up and say, “I’m here because Amara invited me, so I’m going to go door-knocking because I want to invite people into what we’re doing just like I was invited in.” The other members committed to join him.
Our Circle has hosted multiple local mass meetings bringing in hundreds of people, and our members continue to step into bigger and bigger leadership roles, like hosting their own Circles or playing key roles at marches and local actions. But that moment a few months back was special because that’s what organizing is all about.
Here at SURJ, we’re inviting other white people into an organization where they can take action on their values so that all of us, white, Black, and Brown, can live in safety and dignity.
Will you make a financial gift so we can strengthen and build more Circles just like mine and invite other white people to take action with SURJ?

Forty-three million Americans are set to lose food benefits on November 1st. With cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) looming, families across the country are scared, food banks are under-resourced, and local mutual aid programs are scrambling for volunteers. Meanwhile, President Trump is hard at work building a golden ballroom bankrolled by billion-dollar corporations like Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, and Meta, replacing the newly demolished East Wing of the White House.
The majority of people losing SNAP are white people, which means this is a prime opportunity to talk to them about what’s happening in this country. We know winning elections is critical to ensuring a future where no one goes hungry, so SURJ members are calling 60,000 white voters in the Virginia governor’s election. If we can boot MAGA from the Governor’s Mansion in a Southern state like Virginia, a region the far right relies on to hold power, we can deal a powerful blow to MAGA at the ballot box.
The current Virginia governor — who, when he was elected, was one of the richest politicians in the country — has taken plays right out of the MAGA playbook, like instituting a hotline in schools where students and teachers were encouraged to report trans kids to the government. The GOP candidate running this year is his lieutenant governor and hand-picked successor.
Virginia is set to have 850,000 people lose SNAP benefits because Republicans will not negotiate unless they get to rip healthcare away from Americans. The current Virginia governor is using this as an opportunity, just like MAGA, to lie and blame Democrats for this ahead of the election, intending to use white voters’ suffering to build power for MAGA’s white supremacist agenda and get his candidate elected.
We can’t let them get away with it. While the Virginia governor’s race isn’t as exciting as electing Zohran Mamdani in NYC, it is still critical. While we build the future with candidates like Mamdani, we also must block MAGA at every turn, especially in a state like Virginia.
Every MAGA defeat we can notch is a win fo r all of us. We’ve got eight days. Can you join us?
In solidarity,
SURJ

David here — and I’m pretty pissed off right now.
Chuck Schumer had one job: hold the line for working people. He failed. Again.
For over forty days, Democrats stood their ground. They finally had real leverage to protect affordable health care for millions, backed by public support, a fresh mandate from voters, and the moral high ground.
And after all that? They walked away with NOTHING — not a single concession or win for the people who were begging them to keep fighting and not to fold.
They caved for a “compromise” with Senate Republicans to maybe talk about ACA subsidies in December. Now those same Republicans are saying it’s dead on arrival unless they can attach it to abortion restrictions.
That’s not a compromise. That’s total surrender.
You’d think Democrats in D.C. would know by now: when you give MAGA an inch, they take a mile. Show weakness, and they go for blood.
And the eight Senate Democrats who caved? They weren’t the new or younger members. They were the “steady hands” with over 120 years in office between them. The same steady hands who promised to protect our care, then went on TV and said: It was too hard to stand up to Trump, so we gave up. As we’ve said over and over again, experience means nothing without courage.
This all begs the question: where the hell was Chuck Schumer?
The Senate Minority leader has one actual responsibility: keep your caucus unified when it matters most. Senator Schumer either has completely lost control of his caucus, or he has let corporate donors, airlines, and lobbyists push him to reopen the government on their terms, without securing anything for working people.
I know which one seems more likely to me. But neither is acceptable. Because they both send the same message to voters:
Your health care, your stability, and your basic needs are negotiable. They’re not really worth fighting for, even though we spent 40+ days telling you they were and when we had maximum leverage and we were winning we gave up with nothing to show for it.
This is why the Democratic Party brand is toxic. This is why trust is collapsing. This is why we need new leadership and this is exactly why LWD exists.
So I’m saying it plainly:
Chuck Schumer must step down as Democratic leader.
Not in 2030. Not eventually. Now.
And when Democrats pick a new leader, it can’t be another “steady hand” from the same Senators who have more experience in folding than governing. We need someone who can communicate, inspire, and actually fight, no matter if it’s someone with decades of experience or someone newer. What matters most is that they have the courage to make any amount of experience meaningful.
That’s what Leaders We Deserve is building: leaders who don’t cave the second corporate donors get uncomfortable. But to take on the Democratic machine and corporate PAC network, we need real grassroots power behind us.
Your support is the only thing that powers us to primary asleep-at-the-wheel feckless Democrats and elect a new generation of leaders, not folders.
We have to build a party that fights like people’s lives depend on it — because they do.
Thank you for standing with us,

David here. This is going to be a longer email, so let me get right to it:
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it takes to build long-term political power — the kind that lasts beyond one election cycle. And honestly? It works a lot like a long-term investment. (Don’t worry — I promise I won’t finance-bro out on you.)
Think of your support for Leaders We Deserve like a 401(k). You contribute steadily over time, and those investments compound into long-term security. The difference is that instead of building a retirement account, you’re building a safety net for American democracy — by helping transform the Democratic Party from the inside out.
Every dollar you invest today helps replace complacent career politicians with a new generation of young leaders who bring urgency, discipline, and decades of fight ahead of them. That’s exactly why we invest so heavily in states like Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Arizona. A dollar spent helping a young candidate in those states in 2026 can have the impact of spending ten times as much in 2030 — when those same states will have gained 4–5 congressional seats and 4–5 electoral votes each, and when we must win legislative control to avoid being gerrymandered into permanent minority rule.
Yes, we’ll work to flip legislatures and congressional seats in 2026. But we also have to plant seeds where future majorities will be decided. Most political organizations operate on four-year timelines, which forces them to focus only on what can be won right now. We can’t afford that. We have to build our future bench in emerging purple states today so we’re not just reacting to power being taken from us, we’re preparing candidates to win the new seats Texas, Florida, and other Sun Belt states are on track to gain.
For too long, Democrats have tried to “time the market” of political change investing emotionally. Meanwhile, Republicans have spent 40 years investing steadily, the political equivalent of consistently investing in the S&P 500. They never stop, no matter whether the environment is favorable or not, no matter who the president is or who has majorities in Congress. Over time, those investments compound. That’s the beauty of young candidates. They have the most valuable thing one can have when it comes to investing or making change: time.
It’s time for Democrats to build long-term, compounding political power too. That’s the work Leaders We Deserve is doing, and your investment is what makes it possible.
And just like any investment, $5 today matters more than $5 tomorrow. The earlier you invest, the greater the return, and last week’s election proved just how far early support can take young leaders. With momentum building, our mid-month deadline tomorrow at midnight, and the midterms less than a year out, now is when investing early matters most.
Leaders We Deserve is just over two years old — and because of grassroots donors like you, we’ve already:
- Elected a young, bold, progressive mayor in New York City
- Supported Representative Dante Pittman in his run that broke the Republican super majority in North Carolina
- By just 74 votes, defeated a candidate in Texas who had previously voted to arm teachers and secured victory for Texas Senator Molly Cook
- Replaced ineffective Democrats with young progressive fighters
- Ran year-round organizing efforts to sustain our work
- Built one of the strongest benches of young leaders in the country and an intergenerational movement standing with them
- Forced the Democratic establishment to make room for the next generation and take our power seriously
If this is what our first two years look like? Imagine what we can achieve in the next five years. The next ten. Twenty.
And we’re already seeing the compounding interest on your early investments. Look at Houston, on track to become the third-largest city in America in a crucial state. As I mentioned, last year we helped elect Molly Cook there, an ER nurse and organizer, to become the youngest (and most progressive) member of the Texas Senate.
She won by just 74 votes — made possible by your support. And because we invested in a year-round organizing program there, when a special election opened up this year for Houston’s congressional seat, we were ready. We backed Christian Menefee, who just won a 16-person primary and is headed to a runoff. That’s what your long-term investment looks like:
Elect one leader —> build turnout —> strengthen a region —> create more wins.
Molly’s win helped build the structure that boosted Christian, and Christian’s win could help fuel the next young progressive in Texas. And on and on — all the way to statewide offices, the Senate, and yes, one day even the White House.
That’s the long game for Leaders We Deserve: making sure the leaders shaping policy on climate, health care, gun safety, reproductive rights, campaign finance, and every issue for decades actually have our future in mind. It’s how we finally end the era of party insiders telling us to wait our turn and start building lasting, generational power.
And we’re doing it because of your investment. We don’t have corporate PACs or special interests backing us. Every young leader we elect is directly powered by people like you who believe our future is worth fighting for.
The more young leaders we elect today, the stronger our bench — and our democracy — will be tomorrow.
Thank you for being a part of generational change.

We’re working to build a democracy where every voice is heard, every vote counts, and every person has the opportunity to prosper.
Government Shutdown
The government shutdown is underway with seemingly no end in sight.
The ACA’s future hangs in the balance.
Each day, more and more headlines appear that show our administration is fracturing.
But the American people are standing strong. They’re ready for change. And we’re ready to help.Visit our website to learn how you can get involved.
Policy: Housing is
a Human Right
In 2024, a record-breaking number of people experienced homelessness. In 2023, nearly 70% of Americans reported being ‘very concerned’ about the cost of housing. The American people care about this crisis and want it addressed.
A nation cannot call itself just while millions sleep on the streets. The housing crisis is not an accident—it is the result of policy choices that put profit over people. Skyrocketing rents, unchecked speculation, and a system that treats shelter as a commodity instead of a necessity have left too many without a place to call home.
The solution is clear: Guarantee housing as a human right. Invest in affordable housing, strengthen tenant protections, and curb corporate landlords who hoard empty units while families struggle. No one should be homeless in a country of abundance.
Action must follow principle. Demand rent control, public housing investment, and policies that prioritize people over profit. Support leaders who fight for fair housing, not those who serve developers.
This is not charity—it is justice. A stable home is the foundation of health, education, and opportunity. When people are housed, communities thrive, crime decreases, and economies grow. The right to shelter is as fundamental as the right to food or clean water.
A roof over one’s head should not be a privilege—it should be a guarantee. End the housing crisis. Secure the right to a home for all.

Our Healthcare Emergency
The most indelibly charged moment I’ve ever known was an evening in 2020 when the whole city of Denver turned into a racket-filled open-air stadium in homage to the healthcare workers of COVID-19.
