Tri-City Democrats

Tri-City Democrats – Friday, July 10, 6:00 PM
Greetings fellow Democrats!
Vacation schedules prevent us from gathering at the farm this month, so we’ll meet at 6pm on June 12 at the Round Table Pizza in Pasco.
As usual at the pizza location, Tri-City Democrats will order several pizzas to share. We’ll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group. Some of our generous members are likely to purchase pitchers of beer to share. If you want the salad bar or soft drinks, you are on your own for those items.
We’ll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group.
We will have ‘Hate Has no Home Here’ signs available.
For full details, including the address, and to RSVP see:

ADDICTION not only disrupts lives but also has significant social and economic impacts for the larger community. Opening of the Columbia Valley Center for Recovery represents a major advancement in the regional services needed to help address addiction challenges.
In recognition of the opening of the Center for Recovery, the August 5 Badger Club Forum will feature an important conversation about causes, prevention and treatment of addiction. Two experts will consider what addiction is; the gap between what we know and what we do; what the community is and can be doing; what families need to know; and substance abuse prevention and looking to the future. redict the future for Eastern Washington rivers?

Today we…
Support new arrivals through education, relationships and community so they can thrive in their new home.
In the future, we will…
Create a community of open hearts, helping hands and supportive systems where strangers become friends and we all thrive.
In the United States, we take it for granted that children will attend school and learn how to read. For many of the students in B5’s adult English classes, however, that wasn’t true. B5 is their first school!!
With the help of teachers, dedicated volunteers, and a lot of hard work on the part of the students, five of our beginning students graduated to level one in March. Learning to read as an adult is very challenging, but these students are used to overcoming challenges.

If you can read this, thank the people in your life who helped you learn, and consider how you might help adults in our community who never had the opportunity to learn to read. You can become a monthly donor here and provide essential funding for B5 programs, or consider becoming a volunteer by submitting an application here.
Thank you for all that you do to support B5’s work and making our community a welcoming space for all.

Thank you to all of you who give your time and money, so refugees and immigrants can find welcome at the doors of B5. Your donation in any amount allows us to support our programs to help newly arrived refugees THRIVE in our community. Will you join us?
Donations can be made through our website or they can be mailed to: B5 Learning Center 715 S Jean Street Kennewick, WA 99336

Today we…
Support new arrivals through education, relationships and community so they can thrive in their new home.
In the future, we will…
Create a community of open hearts, helping hands and supportive systems where strangers become friends and we all thrive.
Do you remember learning to read? What would your life be like if you’d never had that opportunity?
Many of the students in our B5 classes are learning to read for the first time, or never really mastered reading when they were learning English. According to the Barbara Bush Foundation, 19% of adults in Benton County and 37% in Franklin County have low literacy skills, limiting their access to employment, education, and economic mobility. This helps explain why 13.4% of adults in Benton and Franklin counties have not completed a high school diploma or GED, almost double the state rate of 7.7% (Benton-Franklin Trends).

Adults with low literacy skills don’t see themselves as learners and often give up trying. Language learning and literacy go hand in hand, and learning to read in a language that is unfamiliar is even more challenging for adults than it is for kids. For this reason, a safe, encouraging environment is important to keep students working toward their goals.
At B5, we’re thankful for staff and volunteers who work diligently and persistently with students to help them on the road to success. They are equipping our students with the skills they need to become citizens, complete job applications, and get better paying jobs.

In the past, most of our students were new arrival refugees, and B5 received state funding to support them on their educational journey. Today, fewer than half of our students qualify for state funded support. More than ever, we look to our community to join us in the work by volunteering and investing in our students.
Thank you to all of you who give your time and money, so refugees and immigrants can find welcome at the doors of B5. Your donation in any amount allows us to support our programs to help newly arrived refugees THRIVE in our community. Will you join us?

FAQ from A Better Richland
Richland registered voters will vote this November to update the Richland City Council election process to be like the rest of Washington’s First-Class Cities, Pasco, and Kennewick.
Currently all seven members of the Richland council are elected “at-large.” They can live anywhere in the city. A vote to change the city charter would mean five council members would have to be elected from the districts where they live and two would still be elected “at-large”. Each of the five proposed districts would have approximately 12,000 residents. An interactive map on our website can show you in which district you would live.

The Fourth of July may have passed, but we’re not done fighting for our nation’s future – and we’re also not done WINNING.
Yes, we said the “W” word: Winning! In fact, in no small part due to the power and persistence of moms and parents, these state wins have happened in just the past couple of months:
- North Carolina: Won expanded paid leave for public employees.
- West Virginia: Secured vital child care funding.
- New Hampshire: Defeated harmful book bans to keep schools inclusive.
- Pennsylvania: Powering toward passing a statewide paid family and medical leave law.
- New York City: Won major investments in child care.
Now, we need to use these state wins, and this MOMentum, to grow power in our nation’s capitol so that no matter where people live, every parent has access to these critical policies.
And we have a plan.
**Join us in urging Congress to follow The Mom Plan for America to lift families and the economy.
As we pass the 4th of July, moms have a declaration to make about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Spoiler alert: It starts with affordable health care, universal child care, and groceries that don’t cost a fortune.
You know it. We feel it. Things aren’t good right now. We’re in an affordability crisis that didn’t have to be this bad: Last year, President Trump signed devastating cuts to health care and nutrition programs into law. Now, Congress must reverse those cuts and start opening avenues for families and our economy to thrive – and we have a plan for them to do it: The Mom Plan for America.
Skeptical that we can win? Don’t be! We know change is possible because moms are already winning at the state and local levels. (See the inspiring wins list above).
These victories didn’t happen by accident. They happened because moms showed up, raised their voices, and organized for change.
If we can win critical victories in states across the nation, then Congress can do it nationally too. It’s time to scale these wins.
Let freedom ring for moms and families!
We are launching the Mom Plan for America—a 12-point blueprint for an America where all families and our economy can thrive.
As part of this Mom Plan, we’re calling on Congress to:
- Reverse the health care cuts, including the $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts, enacted through H.R. 1.
- Reverse the nutrition cuts enacted through H.R. 1 in this year’s Farm Bill.
- Reject any additional cuts to nutrition or health care programs in the Fiscal Year 2027 appropriations bills.
- Prioritize policies that expand access to affordable health care and nutrition assistance for all families, including permanently extending the Affordable Care Act premium tax credits.
- And, last but far from least, advance the Mom Plan for America!
→ CLICK HERE TO TELL CONGRESS TO GET MOVING ON FAMILY AFFORDABILITY NOW! ←
*Here’s the Mom Plan for America, a plan to lift families and the economy:
- Health Care for All: From birth onwards, including aging, and disability.
- Healthy Food: Access to nutritious food for every family.
- Respect for Every Family: Safety, dignity, and opportunity for every mom and family, regardless of race or background; and not mass incarceration.
- Freedom from Gun Violence: Keep our communities, kids, and democracy safe.
- Defend Democracy: Unshakeable voting rights, freedom of speech, and safe access to polling locations.
- Safe Schools: Ensure schools are places where every child can learn and thrive.
- Reproductive Freedom: Better maternal health outcomes and autonomy over reproductive health decisions.
- Protect Immigrant Families: Immigration policies that balance compassion and security, while honoring the contributions of immigrants.
- Fair Taxes for Families: Tax policies that prioritize families and the economy.
- Universal Childcare: High-quality early education for every child.
- Good Jobs: Fair pay, paid family and medical leave, and earned sick days.
- Affordable Cost of Living: Housing, gas, groceries, utilities, and other basics must be affordable so everyone can build a good life.
After you sign on, we’ll deliver this Mom Plan for America straight to Congress so they know exactly what we expect them to be working toward.
This is important. One year after devastating federal cuts put health care and food assistance at risk for millions of families, we’re choosing hope and action – because we know the power of moms is unstoppable. We’ve shown that when moms raise their voices, public opinion shifts and policies change.
When moms organize, we all win.
*Don’t forget to add your name today to help us bring our nation closer to liberty and justice for ALL. (And please share with 3 friends so they can sign on too).
Thank you for ALL you each do!
– Kristin, Valeria, Ruth, Kelsey, Sue Anne, and the whole MomsRising.org & MamásConPoder Team

Breaking Bad News: The anti-family, anti-worker, anti-economy initiative (backed by Brian Heywood) just announced they have enough signatures to get on the November ballot. This initiative, if passed, would give the ultra wealthy a tax break and leave Washington families footing the bill for the things we need to thrive: health care, public education, and more. Not good.
Brian Heywood, a mediocre millionaire himself, is trying his best to bend the rules in his favor and is asking Washington families to pay the price. He appears to have forgotten that quite literally thousands of people like you spoke up and linked arms with thousands of other families, workers, small businesses, and neighbors across the state to tell our state legislators to protect working families and pass a Millionaire’s Tax that rebalances our upside-down tax code. And we were heard!
Washington lawmakers passed the Millionaire’s Tax this year and here’s what Brian Heywood and his billionaire buddies are trying to steal from Washington families:
Tell Brian Heywood that we don’t stand for this – commit to protecting the Millionaires Tax today!
Let’s be clear, the consequences of this initiative would be steep: it will cut funding for important services like health care and k-12 education, AND raise taxes on working families and small businesses. Washington families will protect the future of our state and defend the Millionaires Tax at the ballot.
Together we are a powerful force for children and families in Washington,
Lauren, Sara, Maggie, Kristin, and the entire MomsRising Together team

As you read this, our democracy is under threat here in Washington state. And the League of Women Voters of Washington (LWVWA) is taking action—every day—to defend it.
IN THE COURTS: We are fighting to protect voter registration rights nationwide. In a key case against U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, LWVWA submitted a sworn statement opposing efforts to block groups like the League from registering new citizens at naturalization ceremonies. This fight continues—and so do we.
IN THE LEGISLATURE: This session, LWVWA tracked 68 democracy-related bills and helped pass eight critical laws to safeguard voters and elections—strengthening protections against discrimination, stopping bad-faith voter challenges, and securing sensitive voter data.
IN OUR COMMUNITIES: We led a successful “decline to sign” campaign to stop Initiative 126, a proposal that would have made it harder to register and stay registered to vote. Now, we’re pushing back against I-500—another attempt to create those same barriers.
This is what defending democracy looks like. It’s urgent. It’s ongoing. And it works.
But we can’t do it without you.
Democracy requires constant effort—and your support makes that possible. This GiveBIG, please make a gift to LWVWA to help defend and strengthen democracy in Washington.

Our monthly General Meeting allows WAISN members from across Washington to share their experiences, discuss strategies for building power in their own local communities, and give us an opportunity to involve directly affected people in our strategic decision-making processes.
In case you missed it or if you had any questions, here is a brief summary of the most important points we discussed and ways you can get involved:
We are hiring!
Policy Manager – WAISN is seeking a Policy Manager to oversee the network’s policy work in the immigration and detention space, including managing a federal portfolio. They will also be responsible for managing up to two organizers/coordinators, including the Policy Organizer.
Policy Organizer – WAISN is seeking a Policy Organizer to help advance community-centered immigration policy across Washington, including tracking legislation, shaping advocacy strategy, and coordinating coalition efforts alongside our Policy and Advocacy Team.
Advocacy Organizer – WAISN is seeking an Advocacy Organizer to turn our policy priorities into accessible, community-driven campaigns, including building coalition capacity, coordinating organizing tables, and deepening our connection to the communities we fight for.
Community Resource and Membership Intern – WAISN is seeking a motivated and passionate individual to support WAISN’s Deportation Defense, Membership, and Community Resource programs through outreach, resource management, and community care. This is a hands-on, six-month role for anyone looking to grow in immigrant justice organizing (15 hrs/week, flexible schedule).
Deportation Defense Hotline
Even though immigration enforcement activity is often underreported, our Hotline and Rapid Response Teams have been able to confirm a clearer picture of where it has been concentrated.
Recent trends show the heaviest activity in Whatcom, King, and Yakima counties—with hotspots in the cities of Bellingham, Mt. Vernon, and Tukwila—most often during traffic stops, in public areas, and around courthouses.
We’re also seeing more calls from community members requesting accompaniment for court dates, USCIS appointments, and ICE check-ins. A key part of Accompaniment Program support is building an emergency plan before an appointment, so community members know someone will be in contact with their family in case they are detained.
That plan usually includes:
- Permission for volunteers to move a vehicle, if needed
- Emergency contact information
- School contact information for families with children
- Employer contact information
Rapid Response
We’re growing our Rapid Response network as fast as we can, and we need you in it. If you are in an area without a team yet, you don’t have to wait for one: grab a few friends, host a watch party of our Rapid Response training, and help us ensure everyone in Washington has a team supporting them at this moment.
Every new person trained is one more corner of Washington where immigration enforcement can’t move unnoticed. This is how we keep each other safe and informed—so join us for our next training, happening Tuesday, July 21 at 6PM PT:
Community Resources and Membership

This August you can join immigrant justice leaders from across the state for two nights and three days at our WAISN Organizational Membership Convening in Central WA! Registration is open until MIDNIGHT TONIGHT, and the convening is included with your WAISN Organizational Membership.
Not a member yet? Join us—there’s a place for your organization in this movement!
Language Justice
At WAISN, language justice goes beyond simply providing translation and interpretation. It’s a strategic framework to build immigrant power across language and culture, because we know that our liberation is tied to each other.
You can be a part of this work too:
- Share our Know Your Rights with immigration flyers—now available in 21 different languages—so more of our neighbors are prepared.
- If you know any language workers, organizations and/or initiatives doing work related to language justice in Washington, please introduce us by sending an email to language@waisn.org so we can connect with them!
Our General Meeting is the third Thursday of every month, please join us on July 16 for the next one—which will include a mid-year review of immigration activity trends we’re seeing across Washington, as reported by our Rapid Response Teams.
Zoom Information:

In solidarity,
Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network
P.S. If you witness immigration activity, raids and detentions in Washington, please text or call the WAISN Deportation Defense Hotline at 1-844-724-3737. We have operators available Monday through Friday from 6am to 6pm to take your call. Our operators speak Spanish and English, and we have interpretation available in nearly 300 languages.
If your call is not answered, text the Hotline number letting us know what you are calling about in detail, and we will try to follow up.
[ENGLISH ABOVE]

WAISN’s Deportation Defense Hotline and Rapid Response Teams receive reports related to immigration enforcement activity across Washington, including calls for post-detention support, sightings of immigration enforcement, and urgent alerts about detentions.
To help ensure you and your loved ones stay informed, we’re sharing some information on the reports we received in May, the trends our Rapid Response Teams are seeing, and how communities can show up to support each other.
These numbers are not just statistics, they reflect stories of family separation, surveillance, and intimidation tactics that sometimes lead to deadly consequences.
85 reports of immigration enforcement activity came through the WAISN Deportation Defense Hotline and Rapid Response Teams in May. We were able to confirm the detention of 79 people, with the heaviest confirmed activity in King, Whatcom, and Skagit counties—and particular hotspots in Bellingham, Seattle, Tukwila, Ferndale, and Mount Vernon.

Trends to watch
In May, most reported detentions occurred in public spaces, including traffic stops and, increasingly, in the area surrounding courthouses. We share this not to spread fear, but to ensure every community member is equipped with the information they need to navigate this moment, and so that no one has to face it alone.
That is what our Accompaniment Program is here for. Trained volunteers accompany community members to court hearings, immigration check-ins, and other appointments—offering presence, support, and an extra layer of visibility and witness in spaces where it matters most.
There are two ways to support or get support right now:
- If you would like someone by your side for an upcoming appointment, call or text the Deportation Defense Hotline at 1-844-724-3737 (Mon-Fri, 6am–6pm) to get connected with an Accompaniment Volunteer.
- If you are able to show up for others, consider joining our Accompaniment Program. The more of us who are trained and ready, the more of our friends and neighbors can move through these moments knowing they are not alone
A note on how we create these updates: These reports are informed directly by our Rapid Response Teams and calls to the Hotline from everyday people who refuse to let these agencies act in the shadows. By working together and reporting what we see across the state, especially in rural areas, we’re able to track critical patterns and give our communities a clearer picture of what is happening on the ground.
While we prioritize accuracy over speed and only share verified patterns, your contributions are what makes this community-led reporting possible. If you see immigration enforcement first-hand or a loved one has been detained, please text or call the WAISN Hotline at 1-844-724-3737 from Monday through Friday 6am-6pm.
If your call is not answered, text the Hotline number letting us know what you are calling about in detail, and we will try to follow up.

- Date and time of sighting and activity
- Street name and description of the area where it happened

We all have constitutional rights regardless of immigration status. You are not alone. Please know that WAISN is here to support you. Our Rapid Response Teams are ready, and our network remains alert—it was built for this moment.
In the face of threats and attacks on our collective safety, community will prevail.
In solidarity,
The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network
[ENGLISH ABOVE]

Help us celebrate the Class of 2026 next Saturday!
As the Class of 2026 gears up for their last full weekend together in Spokane, I wanted to share some exciting updates about next Saturday’s graduation! Surrounded by the breathtaking peaks of our Washington landscape, we’ll come together to celebrate this remarkable class and honor the many individuals who have made it special.
We’re thrilled to have Shasti Conrad, Chair of the Washington Democratic Party, as this year’s keynote speaker, and Xavier Ajeto will also deliver a speech on behalf of the Class of 2026.
We’ll take a moment to thank the outgoing board members for their dedicated service over the years.
Get ready to celebrate and honor some fantastic awards:
- This year, we’re introducing the Board Member of the Year award, shining a spotlight on Meadow Johnson ’09 for her 12 years of outstanding service – her contributions for over a decade are as inspiring as our Cascade peaks!
- We’re also excited to present the Community Partner of the Year award to the Washington Education Association, whose steadfast support and partnership with WAIDF over the past year have truly made a difference.
- Finally, a big congratulations to Jac Archer ’18, our Alumni of the Year, whose ongoing advocacy for Spokane, especially for immigrants, continues to fight for civil rights and dignity for all.
On behalf of Landon, our Program Director, the board of directors, we all look forward to seeing you at a festive and celebratory evening on June 13, filled with good food and drinks, camaraderie, seeing friends, and perhaps making new ones, and celebrating the Class of 2026!
-Emily

The fastest way to save lives from gun violence is to invest in state-based organizing, and we have the playbook that works. Chip in today to fund the model that’s making Washington safer and can do the same everywhere.
Congress hasn’t passed a major gun safety law in years. Washington has passed several, and one of them has already survived multiple attempts by the gun lobby to overturn it in court. HB 1240 made us the 10th state in the country to ban the sale of assault weapons, and it’s still standing. That didn’t happen because we waited on Washington, DC. It happened because people here organized, showed up to testify, and refused to let this issue go quiet.
That’s the model other states are starting to look at, and it’s the model we need your support to keep building. The gun lobby has more money than we’ll ever have. We have something they don’t, thousands of people across the country who believe safety and freedom aren’t opposites.
If you can chip in today, you’re not just funding a campaign. You’re helping prove that state-based organizing is how this movement wins, one state at a time.

Over the past few months, the Trump team has been (not so quietly) unwinding more federal firearm oversight. The ATF, the federal agency in charge of enforcing our country’s gun laws, just made one of the biggest changes to gun policy in decades. Over the past few months, it has quietly rolled back more than three dozen rules that were meant to keep guns out of dangerous situations. This week, that story finally broke into the open, and we think you deserve the no-nonsense version of what’s happening.
As it stands, it’s now harder to hold firearm dealers accountable when they break the law, easier for gun show and online sellers to skip background checks, and easier for some people with a history of serious mental illness to legally buy a firearm. Just this past Friday, the agency also did away with fingerprinting requirements for certain gun purchases. And on Wednesday, the Justice Department sued California and Virginia, two states with strong gun safety laws, just hours after those laws took effect. This is not a handful of small tweaks. It is a fast, coordinated effort to undo years of progress at both the federal and state level.
Here’s the part I really want you to sit with. Alongside all of this, the administration also shut down the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and canceled the Surgeon General’s official warning that gun violence is a public health crisis. That means it’s not just that buying a gun got easier in dozens of small ways. The federal government is trying to stop treating gun violence like the crisis we all know it to be.
We are currently living through an administration that is putting dangerous deregulation into our communities, at a time when we have made so much progress. My ask for you today is to recommit some of your energy into the gun violence prevention movement with us. Sign our petition below to put your name behind that recommitment, and to demand Congress hold hearings on this rollback before more damage is done. Together, we will push back on the dangerous deregulation and harmful rhetoric. But that’s only possible with you by our side.

“Can you imagine being so greedy that you want more kids to go hungry so that you can have $11 million a year instead of $10 million a year? That’s exactly what Initiative 645 would do.” That’s what teacher Larry Delaney says in a video statement.
Mega-millionaire Brian Heywood just submitted the signatures he bought to place Initiative 645 on our ballots this November, and community leaders are sounding the alarm about just how destructive this initiative would be.
“Our schools are already struggling with overcrowded classrooms and middle class families are feeling the impacts of the affordability crisis. I-645 would take money from our schools and send housing and healthcare costs skyrocketing,” continued Delaney.

Rian Watt, Executive Director of the Economic Opportunity Institute, told the Seattle Times, “The fundamental issue at stake here is that Brian Heywood and a group of his millionaire friends are trying to give themselves a tax cut at the expense of working people.”
The backers of this initiative claim that taxes on the super-rich drive people away. But the Seattle Times reported the capital gains tax on stock market profits “smashed records” by funding $1.5 billion for education, childcare and other programs this year, three times what it raised in 2025, suggesting that the capital gains tax didn’t change much for mega-millionaires and billionaires living in Washington, and neither will the Millionaires Tax.
Analysis shows that I-645 would blow a massive $16.6 billion hole in our state budget, resulting in devastating cuts to K-12 education, healthcare, human services, and higher education. This would set us back decades. There’s no question about it: We can’t let I-645 pass.
Sign here to pledge to vote NO on I-645.

CAMPAIGN TO REPEAL WA ‘MILLIONAIRES TAX’ SUBMITS OVER 500,000 SIGNATURES

“The fundamental issue at stake here is that Brian Heywood and a group of his millionaire friends are trying to give themselves a tax cut at the expense of working people,” said Rian Watt, executive director of the Economic Opportunity Institute, a progressive nonprofit group.
Washington is one of nine states without a personal income tax, leaving it reliant on sales taxes that are comparatively hard on poorer residents.

COULD INITIATIVE TO KILL WA ‘MILLIONAIRES TAX’ ALSO KILL CAPITAL GAINS TAX?

Initiative 645, likely headed for a vote this fall, explicitly aims to repeal the so-called “millionaires tax” signed into law by Gov. Bob Ferguson this year.
But foes of the initiative are citing a new legal analysis that says the proposal’s broad wording — banning any taxes “measured by” income — may have far more sweeping and financially disastrous consequences for the state.
Erik Houser, a spokesperson for the anti-I-645 campaign, Millionaires Tax for Washington, accused Heywood in a statement of “either not understanding” or being “deliberately deceptive” about “the potentially catastrophic impacts” of the measure.

WAGES ARE FALLING. WEALTH IS SURGING. NO WONDER AMERICANS ARE UNHAPPY.

On Wednesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the surge in energy prices had wiped out a year and a half of wage gains for the average American worker. On Friday, the public-markets debut of SpaceX made Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire.

LETTER: TAX DISPARITY

Taxes are complicated, and I’m no mathematician. I have it boiled down to two statements of fact that I use as a guide.
First, if we don’t pay taxes, our roads and bridges don’t get fixed, and our teachers, firefighters and police don’t get paid.
Second, people in the lowest 20 percent income bracket pay roughly 14 percent of their income in taxes, while people in the highest 1 percent income bracket pay roughly 4 percent of their income in taxes.
More – Linda Benson, Peninsula Daily News
IT’S TIME FOR A NATIONAL BILLIONAIRES’ TAX AND A NEW SOCIAL COMPACT

There is a working coalition in this country of blue-collar and white-collar, urban and rural, the people who built this country and the people who are trying to find their place in it. They did everything right, and the system still has nothing for them. They are asking for the basics of a decent life, a home in a safe neighborhood, and a doctor they can see without dread. They need child care, an affordable college education, and something left over at the end of the month. What stands in their way is the federal tax code, a corporate code, and an inheritance code written for a different set of Americans. We can rewrite all three together at the federal level with a new social compact. It’s time for an economic reset for America.

Elon Musk has become a trillionaire. Trillion with a “T.”
That amount of wealth is hard to comprehend, but here are some ways to try:
- Elon Musk could spend $1,000,000 every day and wouldn’t be low on cash until the year 4700.
- It would take the poorest 3,800,000,000 people on Earth pooling their wealth together to match Elon Musk’s fortune.
- Elon Musk could give $100 to every one of the 8,300,000,000 people on Earth, and he would still be one of the richest people alive.
In the face of this extreme wealth, a new survey showed that nearly half of Americans report struggling to afford health care in the last year, and Washington State is preparing to navigate yet another budget shortfall. This shouldn’t be a surprise. It is the predictable result of a tax code and an economy that asks too little of those with the most and too much of everyone else.
The good news is that Washington state has another path, and we made big steps by passing the Millionaires Tax earlier this year. Now, it’s time to protect this progress by declining to sign IP26-645 so we can generate vital revenue for schools, health care, housing, and tax cuts that benefit all Washingtonians.
Thank you for declining to sign!
Ben, Invest in WA Now
THE FIRST TRILLIONAIRE

The first trillionaire — much less a trillionaire known for erratic personal behavior, online trolling and support for global right-wing politics — will likely reignite discussion of the diverging fortunes of wage earners and those with market-based wealth, as well as their growing political power.
THE MILLIONAIRE EXODUS THAT NEVER CAME

The popular image of the “mobile millionaire,” constantly searching for the lowest-tax location, unravels under close inspection. Top earners often travel, but they rarely change where they live. More often, they are deeply rooted – and powerful insiders – in the places where they built their careers and businesses and raised their families. It is not so easy to walk away from these kinds of relationships.

WA GOVERNOR’S OFFICE WARNS AGENCIES TO PREPARE FOR ‘SIGNIFICANT BUDGET SHORTFALLS’

State agency leaders received a dire warning from Gov. Bob Ferguson’s office on Friday that they’re headed toward “what will likely be the most challenging budget any of us has yet faced.”
“There will be significant budget shortfalls next biennium in both operating and transportation budgets,” the governor’s budget director, K.D. Chapman-See wrote in a three-page memo.

NEARLY HALF OF ADULTS STRUGGLED TO AFFORD HEALTHCARE LAST YEAR, SURVEY FINDS

Survey results also showed about 1 in 5 adults with private health insurance coverage reported large increases in insurance premiums — but adults with individual Marketplace plans were nearly twice as likely to report large premium increases as those with employer coverage.
According to health policy research organization KFF, the average Marketplace deductible surged by about $1,000 per person this year, as more enrollees shift to higher-deductible plans after enhanced subsidies expired.

SURGING STOCK MARKET, TRUMP POLICIES BOOST WEALTH FOR 1%

The richest 1% of Americans held nearly a third of the country’s total wealth at the end of 2025, the largest percentage the Federal Reserve Board has recorded since it started monitoring the numbers in 1989. In 1990, the share was 22.5%.
The latest percentage, 31.9%, is likely the largest since the end of World War II, possibly heralding a return to the extreme wealth inequality of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And it is likely to balloon further as a result of President Donald Trump’s tax cuts and other pro-business policies.

WA FALLS TO 31ST IN NATIONAL EDUCATION RANKING

Another notable issue the report shows, [Soleil] Boyd said, is a lack of access to early learning. The report found that 57% of children ages 3 and 4 are not in school, a one percentage point decline from the previous reporting period.
Boyd flagged rollbacks the state Legislature made this year to prekindergarten programs and cuts to childcare providers.
She said it’s “really encouraging” that a portion of the state revenue from the new income tax on millionaire earners is slated to help fund early learning programs. But collections of the tax don’t start until 2029, and it’s still possible it could be overturned in court or by voters.

This morning, the United States Supreme Court upheld the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship and affirmed that it cannot be stripped away through executive action. This decision affirms a fundamental constitutional principle that has defined this country for over 150 years – that every child born in the United States is a citizen of the United States.
NWIRP is proud to have brought the first class action challenging the Trump administration’s effort to undo birthright citizenship through executive action last year. We are also grateful for the many leaders and partners who worked to defend this constitutional right including the Washington Attorney General’s office, and our partners at the ACLU. NWIRP and the Attorney General for Washington State successfully defended birthright citizenship before the district court and the Ninth Circuit Court of appeals, preserving this fundamental right. The ACLU then defended this fundamental constitutional right before the Supreme Court.
“We are proud that NWIRP was able to work alongside the Washington State Attorney General and present arguments to defend this fundamental right before the district court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals,” said Leila Kang, supervising attorney for NWIRP’s Impact Litigation team. “Today, the Supreme Court affirmed what every other court to rule on this issue has made clear–the President has no authority to rewrite our Constitution. But the divided opinion from the Supreme Court reminds us that we must continue to defend the most fundamental freedoms. We cannot take anything for granted.”
While this was a critical victory, there have also been devastating losses. Just last week, the Supreme Court issued a ruling permitting the administration to eliminate Temporary Protected Status for Haitian and Syrian community members. The ruling opens the door for stripping TPS from hundreds of thousands of community members from other designated countries as well. The Supreme Court also approved the administration’s program blocking asylum seekers at our doorsteps from even submitting applications for protection. Together, these rulings represent significant restrictions of humanitarian protections that have long served as lifelines for people seeking safety and stability. We cannot emphasize enough the profound consequences these decisions will have for directly impacted immigrant community members, their loved ones, and their communities.
Our unwavering commitment remains the same. We will continue to challenge unlawful policies, support our communities through our work, and fight for a future where all people are treated with dignity and respect.

Mega Master Calendar Hearings And Due Process
Across multiple administrations, we have seen repeated efforts to limit access to meaningful due process in our immigration system. From expedited removal procedures to so-called “rocket dockets,” policies have increasingly prioritized speed over fairness, often at the expense of people’s legal rights.
The latest example is the expansion of large-scale master calendar hearings, sometimes referred to as “mega master calendar hearings,” where dozens or even hundreds of individuals may appear before an immigration judge during a single hearing session. These types of hearings create significant barriers for community members attempting to understand complex legal proceedings, secure counsel, and fully exercise their rights.
The Seattle immigration court experienced its first mega master last week. NWIRP and our partners are continuing to monitor these developments closely and advocate for an immigration court system that respects fundamental fairness and ensures that individuals have meaningful access to legal protections. Every person facing deportation proceedings deserves a fair opportunity to be heard. Efficiency cannot come at the expense of due process.
Celebrating Pride Month Across Washington State
Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, leadership, and contributions of LGBTQ+ community members, despite current attacks our communities are experiencing, including today’s Supreme Court ruling barring transgender girls and women from playing school sports that match their gender identity.
This month, NWIRP staff were proud to participate in Pride celebrations in both Wenatchee and Tacoma alongside community members, partners, and advocates committed to building welcoming and inclusive communities. We are grateful to everyone who joined us in celebration throughout the month and look forward to continuing to stand in solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities across Washington State.

New Community Advisory: Know Your Rights After Ending Representation with an Attorney or Legal Representative
If you’ve ended your relationship with an immigration attorney or DOJ accredited representative, it’s important to know the steps you can take to protect your case, your documents, and your rights. This guide covers how to request your file, track your case, avoid fraud, find new legal support, and report misconduct if needed. Immigration cases can move quickly and have strict deadlines; staying informed and organized can make a real difference.
Please share this information with friends, family, and community members who may benefit from it.
Assisting Community Members Apprehended by Immigration Enforcement
Over the weekend, we received reports from our partners across the state that several community members were apprehended by immigration enforcement officers. We encourage you and your loved ones to contact NWIRP in the event that someone you know has been taken to the Tacoma immigration detention center by calling us toll-free at (877) 814-6444, or by sending an email to detainedreferrals@nwirp.org.

Upcoming Free Webinar on July 22nd
Join us on Wednesday, July 22 to learn about recent immigration related updates. We will share information in English from 5:00 PM to 5:45 PM, followed by the same updates in Spanish from 5:45 PM to 6:30 PM. Please join at the time that works best for your language needs.
Your partnership allows us to continue providing free legal services, challenging unlawful policies, educating communities about their rights, and standing beside people as they seek safety and opportunity.
Thank you for your continued support. We are grateful to have you as part of this movement.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the record breaking support we received from this community at this year’s annual gala. Together, we raised over $1.6 million dollars to continue defending and advancing immigrant rights in the months and years to come. At the event, I shared that while the past year has been a challenging one, we are making a difference because this community refuses to look away, refuses to stay silent, and refuses to accept injustice.
Over the past year, we have expanded our reach and deepened our impact. Our Community Outreach team has connected thousands of people with critical information. And in 2025, we reached over 25,000 people through community outreach efforts.
Our staff and pro bono volunteers, day after day, stand beside community members in immigration detention who are facing some of the most isolating and unjust conditions imaginable, and are working to ensure our clients can seek the protections for which they are eligible. At the event, we shared a video highlighting this ongoing work through interviews with our staff, pro bono attorney Amy Bowles, and community member Tsimba Phukuta – which you can view at this link.
Through our work and partnerships, we are building something bigger than any one organization—an ecosystem of support that stretches from local communities, to the entire state of Washington, and across the country.
Together, we will continue this work. Together, we will be ready to respond and meet this moment with courage. And together, we will ensure that our communities are not only protected, but that they can thrive – because we all deserve to thrive. Thank you for your continued support. We also invite you to view photos from photographer Tawfiq Abdulaziaz at this link, and photobooth pictures from the event here.
Teresa Zepeda Sosa’s Story
We were honored to have keynote speaker Teresa Zepeda Sosa share her story at our gala this year. Teresa is a former NWIRP client, a small business owner, and one of the founding members of Parque Padrinos – a grassroots organization that celebrates and empowers the South Wenatchee and surrounding communities. In addition to these accomplishments, Teresa is a powerful immigrant rights advocate and social justice leader in her community. For those of you who were unable to attend, we are including a shortened version of her speech at this link.

USCIS Announces New Policy Limiting Adjustment of Status (AOS) Applications
Last week, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced a new policy aimed at limiting one of the most common and important pathways to lawful permanent residence—adjustment of status–an application filed from within the United States. Once again, in pursuit of its anti-immigrant agenda, the Trump administration seeks to erase legal pathways enacted by Congress, claiming that adjustment of status is a “loophole” that should be fixed. However, adjustment of status is a statutory benefit, enacted by Congress precisely to ensure that families are not needlessly separated and that employers are not needlessly deprived of essential employees for months or even years. Moreover, in arguing that applicants should be forced to return to their home countries to finalize the process, the administration cynically sidesteps that many applicants, if forced to leave the United States, will face additional barriers that would render them ineligible to return to the United States for ten years. The new policy flouts the current laws and is meant to once again intimidate, confuse, and create chaos. We are currently working with partners to ensure that this new policy is exposed for what it is–an unlawful effort to ignore controlling laws designed to provide a clear path for family and employment visas.

-We are hosting virtual phone banks twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday evenings! Please sign up and share these opportunities to get the word out. So far, we’re having overwhelmingly positive conversations and are already noticing a difference in people’s awareness.☎️
–Did you see the article Megan Rapinoe wrote about 638 and 001 yet?! Olympic gold medalist, World Cup winner, activist, and beloved former Seattle Reign player has officially endorsed No Hate in Washington State!
In this article, Megan writes, “In my home state of Washington, the most extreme proposal of its kind is before voters on the November ballot. Measure I-638 would require all girls—but not boys—to be medically sex certified before they can play sports. In a country rife with sexual assault, young girls would have to undergo invasive inspections of their genitals, or pay for a DNA or hormone test, as part of their school sports physicals. Doctors say genital inspections are not only medically unnecessary to play sports, they can traumatize and physically harm young girls.”

–We’re hiring! No Hate is looking to hire an Organizing and Coalition Manager. Please share the job description with anyone who might be a good fit.
–Are you a healthcare professional, or do you know people who are? Please consider signing onto this letter.

Hi, we’ve had a busy month here at No Hate in WA State ⬇️
Last month, we kicked off our general election campaign with a bang. Hundreds of supporters and friends showed up to our kickoff to make it clear that these harmful, bigoted ballot measures have no place in our state.
We had rousing speeches from Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, Executive Director Girmay Zahilay, Councilmember Dionne Foster, and community leader Jaelynn Scott. The talented Northwest Girlchoir and STANCE choral delivered amazing performances that we all enjoyed.
It was a wonderful evening that gave us the jolt of energy and optimism we needed for the months ahead.
Team No Hate in WA State showed up with big smiles to stand with and support our LGBTQ+ communities at Pride parades and celebrations across our state!
Although Pride month may be over, we know the work to protect our trans youth continues. This Saturday, July 11th, in Olympia, we’re super excited to host No Hate! Festival, a one-day-only festival with live music, dancing, local artists, and great food.
If you’re interested in attending, you can RSVP here. >>
The way we are going to defeat IL26-001 and IL26-638 this November is by connecting and engaging with as many Washington voters as we can.
Yard signs! Stickers! Hats and more! We’ve got some fun new items in our merch store if you want to rep No Hate in WA State and support our work. Check it out!
Thank you for continuing to support our work to support Washington’s youth and defeat IL26-001 and IL26-638.

Indivisible Rural Program [2021 WORKING DOC]

Hello Indivisible Red & Rural Caucus,
Thank you again to everyone who joined our first Red & Rural Caucus call of 2026. It was wonderful to connect with organizers from across the country and spend time thinking about the work ahead. During the call, we shared updates on what’s happening at Indivisible, reflected on insights from our 2025 caucus survey, and discussed how rural organizers can plug into the No Kings campaign and upcoming mobilizations. Check out the recording below.
NO KINGS 3 Host Resources
As you know, we’re gearing up for No Kings 3 on March 28th, and many of you will be hosting rallies in your communities. Based on the feedback from your survey responses, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help make your event a success. Check them out below.
Coming Up
Our next cal will be on April 14th at 7:30 PM ET. We’ll hear from rural No Kings hosts about lessons learned from their events, share practical tools for sustaining rural organizing and expanding local networks, and reflect on next steps for building community power. We can’t wait to share this space with you!
In Solidarity,
The Indivisible Red and Rural Caucus Team

Hello Indivisible Red & Rural Caucus,
As February comes to a close, we celebrate Black history and its deep roots in rural communities, from farming and land stewardship to labor organizing, mutual aid, faith leadership, and civic engagement. These often-overlooked stories show how Black people have shaped rural life and democracy for generations and remind us of the power of organized communities, power we will carry into our work together in 2026.
First Red and Rural Caucus Call of 2026
We didn’t get a chance to connect in February, but we’re looking forward to seeing everyone next month!
Our next Red and Rural Caucus call will be a little different. We’re meeting on Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 PM ET, a change from our usual schedule to avoid conflicting with all the No Kings 3 trainings happening during the week.
The session will be facilitated by our Campaigns Director, Gracey, a fresh face to guide our conversation on the plan for 2026, and Tim, our Mobilization Director, who will explore how members can plug into No Kings while building power in red and rural communities.
Register below to receive reminders. We have many exciting plans for 2026 and can’t wait to see you there!
NO KINGS 3
We’re gearing up for the next round of No Kings protests, and we’d love to hear from you. Let us know whether you’re planning to host a No Kings event in your community, and what kind of support you’d need to make it a success. Whether you’re just starting to think about it or already organizing, we’re here to support you.
Take Action Now
Republicans are once again pushing for a series of voter suppression bills—all variations of their infamous “SAVE Act”, which would create unnecessary obstacles for millions of eligible Americans trying to register to vote.
Congress is negotiating new funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at a moment when ICE and CBP are inflicting real harm on communities. This resource breaks down what we’re demanding and how you can take action.

Elections are won before
the final votes are counted
From the desk of Bibek Gurung, Senior Digital Strategist
70%. That’s how many races in 2024 had exactly one candidate on the ballot, according to research from BallotReady. Seats are held for decades because nobody ever mounts a challenge. A ballot full of coronations leaves us with a very thin bench and a lot of prayers.
At the local level, where decisions most directly touch your life, that number drives up to 74%. As the researchers put it, millions of Americans feel this firsthand as they “scroll past pages and pages of uncontested races” on their way to casting a vote.
Building the bench matters more than any single race, because lower offices are the doorway to higher offices. Today’s state legislator might run for mayor in 2030. A school board member who learns to win a tough local race becomes a senator who knows how to win a tough statewide one. Every uncontested seat at the bottom of the ballot prevents a future candidate from the top of it.

The fix isn’t flashy, BUT it works: more people running. That includes you. Learn how at traindems.org.

What’s On Our Newsfeeds
Why this story matters:
Texas’ attorney general and GOP Senate nominee appears to have voted in six elections using an address where he hasn’t lived in two years. The self-appointed sheriff of election integrity should probably start by checking his own voter registration.
Why this story matters:
After failing to close primaries through the legislature, the SC GOP is suing the State Election Commission to restrict who can vote in the contests that decide most races in a deep-red state. When you can’t win the argument, just shrink the electorate until you can!
Why this story matters:
The GOP is disenfranchising Black voters, again. Well, Black organizers, leaders, and voters decided they’re not having it and have mobilized. “This awoke a sleeping giant,” one organizer said.

Most of our virtual trainings focus on strategy and big-picture thinking. Today we’re doing something different.
At 1 pm ET, we’re taking you inside VoteBuilder and showing you how to build a list, step by step. And if you already have VoteBuilder access, you can pull it up and practice along with us in real time.
This is a hands-on session, which means we’re diving straight into the platform. Here’s what we’ll cover:
- Why VoteBuilder is the right platform for list-building and how to use it strategically
- How to evaluate and apply VoteBuilder’s filtering options
- How to build a targeted persuasion list from scratch
It’s free, it’s virtual, and it starts at 1 pm ET/10am PT. You’ve still got time.
Register now and come ready to learn and win!

Are your volunteers staying on message once they have a voter’s attention?
It’s Morgan from NDTC. Today at 1 pm ET, we’re hosting a free virtual training on Preparing Supporters to Share Your Message, and there’s still time to join us and our partners at ActBlue.
This one is for anyone prepping their volunteers for direct voter contact, or looking to get their supporter network actually talking about the campaign. In one hour, we’ll cover:
- Different ways that supporters of your campaign can amplify your messaging
- Best practices for keeping volunteers on message during voter contact
In my experience, the campaigns that get this right make one thing a priority: practicing the message with volunteers before they ever knock on a door or pick up a phone.
It’s free, virtual, and starts in just a few hours.
We start at 1 pm ET/10 am PT today. Grab your spot and we’ll see you there.
Warmly,
Morgan Taylor

our rights are on the line.
That’s why the ACLU is spending $25.5 million in ballot measures and candidate races across the nation to create a firewall for our rights. Learn more about our plans for this election season.
This is our largest investment ever. As President Trump’s second term continues to bring unprecedented federal abuses of power, we’re creating a firewall for our freedom – reinforcing the power of our democracy by educating voters about how state supreme courts and state legislatures impact their rights.
This includes voter engagement work by the ACLU and ACLU Voter Education Fund in races for:
- State Supreme Courts in Michigan, Montana, and North Carolina
- Secretary of State in Nevada
- State legislators in Georgia, Michigan, Montana, and North Carolina
We’re also working on seven ballot measures across the country to put the power in voters’ hands to protect abortion rights, voting rights, and other key civil rights and liberties issues.
These elections couldn’t be more critical. State and local leaders have proven time and time again to be decisive in determining the future of key civil rights and liberties. And these key ballot measures impact important rights too – like abortion access, voting rights, and more.
At the same time, the ACLU’s national organizing infrastructure is hard at work educating voters, building local capacity, and mobilizing communities. We the people have the power to shape our futures by starting in our own backyards, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.
This November, we’re fighting where it counts. Join us.

Now that we have your attention, we would like to point out that men are “vastly outgiving women” in this year’s election, based on the most recent research from CAWP.
We are giving less frequently, and we are giving smaller contributions.

This year, we have over 700 Emerge alums up and down the ballot all across the country – and we are ready to win.
But none of this would be possible without the sustaining support of our donors.
Whether you give $5 a month or $50, each recurring dollar makes all the difference in driving the work needed to train Democratic women to run and win.
And right now, the earlier you commit your support, the more impact your gift has.
That is why we are asking for 25 new members of Club Emerge, our relaunched monthly sustainer program, before the end of the quarter. As a founding member, your support will ensure our work can continue and grow.

Hundreds of thousands of you helped stop the SAVE Act.
But “stalled” doesn’t mean “dead.”
Here’s what you need to know, and why we can’t let up:
- Trump is trying to force the SAVE Act into must-pass spending bills to give it another path through Congress.
- He’s using it as a political wedge, spreading lies about our elections to undermine confidence in our democracy and justify new voter suppression.
- He’s escalating the pressure campaign, demanding Republicans fall in line and treating the SAVE Act as a loyalty test.
The SAVE Act will make it harder for millions of eligible Americans, including women who changed their names after marriage, survivors escaping abuse, military families, students, and transgender voters, to register and vote.
Tell Congress: don’t fold. Reject the SAVE Act in any form. Protect our freedom to vote.

Women reported being raped inside an ICE detention center in California. Those reports were never investigated as crimes.
Why? Because the private prison company running the detention center was allowed to investigate rape allegations against itself, and decide whether law enforcement needed to know.
Add your name and tell Congress to require independent criminal investigations of every sexual assault allegation in immigration detention and end sweetheart agreements that let private prison companies police themselves.

Dear MoveOn member,
My name is Nancy, and I’m a fellow MoveOn member and volunteer from Chesapeake, Virginia. Let’s face it: Donald Trump does not want me or people who think like me and you to vote.
But I am sure that you, like me, believe that voters should choose their leaders, not the other way around. But right now, we’re witnessing a Jim Crow-era-like effort from Trump and his billionaire friends to strip away our freedoms and silence Black and Brown voters to consolidate their power.
Just last week, Donald Trump fired members of the Election Assistance Commission and threatened to cut off funding from states that don’t comply with his orders to change their states’ voting rules.1,2 He wants to take control of our elections so he can control the outcome.
The attacks are relentless—and that’s the point. They want us intimidated, quiet, and hopeless. But we aren’t giving up. We will decide our future, choose our leaders, and ensure that the will of the people prevails.
That’s why, this weekend, on the sixth anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing, I’m hosting a Good Trouble Lives On event in my community to continue the fight for voting rights with nonviolent collective action. There are more than 500 events taking place July 17-19 around the country, including near you. Will you find and attend an event close to you?
If our vote didn’t matter, they wouldn’t try so hard to take it away. If we weren’t so powerful, they wouldn’t try to silence us. That’s why we need to keep showing up.
We know that our right to vote is directly tied to the issues that impact our lives. From healthcare to housing to our ability to live and thrive in our communities, our vote makes a difference. Every person should have an equal say in the decisions that impact our lives.
Congressman Lewis’s call to “get in good trouble, necessary trouble” couldn’t come at a more pivotal time. Our right to vote is under attack, but we will come together in the spirit of Congressman Lewis’s legacy. I hope you’ll join me.
Find an event near you on the map and RSVP to join an event in your community.
Thanks for all you do.

P.S.: Good Trouble Lives On is a nonpartisan weekend of action. We require that participants commit to not advocate for, endorse, or oppose any political candidate or ballot initiative. A core principle behind all Good Trouble Lives On events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

Big Tech and Trump want to ban states from regulating AI. Sign the petition to demand Congress oppose these efforts.
Dear MoveOn member,
Big Tech—the companies developing AI and pushing it on us—have one aim: Maximize profits, no matter the cost.
That’s why these companies and Trump have partnered up to try and make it illegal for individual states to regulate AI.
Because when states and local municipalities halt the construction of data centers, enact safeguards for children’s use of chatbots, insert guardrails where AI is used to surveil workers, and affirm consumer’s rights, Big Tech’s profits are threatened. And we already know which side Trump is on.
In the face of zero to no federal oversight or regulation of AI, dozens of states across the country have enacted common-sense, people-first safeguards that protect kids, workers, and families.
For example, Connecticut requires employers to disclose when employees or job applicants are interacting with AI systems. Illinois forces AI developers to get an independent auditor to review compliance with their own safety policies. Across the country, both blue and red states have enacted restrictions on how AI chatbots can interact with people, especially children. A California executive order requires companies contracting with the states to prove that their AI models avoid harmful bias, unlawful discrimination, detention and surveillance. And this is just a small sample of the great progress states have made to protect us.1
But all of it is at risk of being stripped away if Big Tech gets its way.
Some members of Congress, including Democrat Rep. Trahan of Massachusetts, in cahoots with Big Tech are preparing to introduce the Great American AI Act, a bill that would allow federal law to override—or “preempt”—state-level AI regulations.2 Shockingly, this bill would block states from regulating the development of artificial intelligence for at least three years. It’s clear who this would benefit, and it’s not us.
Congress: stand with the people, not tech billionaires!
Over the past year, Big Tech and Trump have tried to tie states’ hands from regulating AI multiple times. Last year, Trump signed an executive order to strip states of their authority to regulate AI and to have the Department of Justice sue states that do so.3 In Congress, he’s tried to sneak federal preemption into multiple pieces of legislation, but up until now, bipartisan opposition has halted those efforts.4 With a new bill making its way through Congress, we must pressure lawmakers to side with us once again.
Federal preemption threatens to erase hard-won AI safeguards in many states around the country. We must demand that our members of Congress stand with the people, not tech billionaires. Add your name to the petition.
After signing a major AI safeguard executive order, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement, “California’s always been the birthplace of innovation. But we also understand the flip side: In the wrong hands, innovation can be misused in ways that put people at risk.” “California leads in AI, and we’re going to use every tool we have to ensure companies protect people’s rights, not exploit them or put them in harm’s way.”5
That’s the type of leadership we need from every level of government. Without regulation, we are vulnerable to these companies’ thirst for profits, no matter the human toll.
We cannot afford to wait around and see what happens. We need AI safeguards NOW to protect children, workers, and families.
Thanks for all you do.

March For Our Lives Virtual Events

Imagine a world where anyone can buy a handgun online and have it shipped directly to their front door. No visiting a local shop. No face-to-face interaction to spot warning signs or red flags. Just a few clicks, and a deadly weapon arrives with the morning mail.
Right now, the Trump administration’s ATF is moving to make this terrifying vision a reality by pushing a massive wave of deregulation — 34 rule changes in total — designed to transform the firearms market into a lawless digital marketplace.
The ATF itself predicts this could result in 3.3 million guns being delivered directly to people’s homes every single year.
But this isn’t just a policy failure. It is a massive conflict of interest.
Donald Trump Jr. sits on the board and owns hundreds of thousands of shares in GrabAGun, an online weapons retailer openly plotting to become the “Amazon of guns.” Their stock has been struggling, but their CEO told investors exactly what they needed to hear: the administration’s new rules will be a financial boon for the company.
If these rules go through, the President’s son stands to make millions of dollars. Meanwhile, our communities will pay the price in blood.
Experts, gun-control advocates, and even local brick-and-mortar gun shop owners agree: bypassing in-person background checks eliminates the last line of defense against gun traffickers, straw purchasers, and violent criminals.
March for Our Lives was founded during the first Trump administration. We were born in a moment of anger, but we grew into a powerful, youth-led movement fueled by hope and an unshakeable belief that a safer future is possible. We organized, we marched, and we successfully pushed the government to create the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
We know how to hold these actors accountable. We know how to disrupt their backroom deals. And we know that when young people tell it like it is, the world listens.
They have the money, the political power, and the executive orders. But we have the truth, the passion, and millions of young people who refuse to be collateral damage for a billionaire’s investment portfolio.
The public comment periods are moving fast, and our window to act is shrinking. Let’s show them that our lives are not for sale.
Thank you for standing with us,
— Team MFOL

Alea Bates was finishing her last Uber Eats delivery of the night when a stranger shot her seven times at close range.
Miraculously, she survived. But after major surgery, she couldn’t get out of bed or walk to the bathroom without help. Her left leg was entirely numb, shooting with intense pain. She didn’t even have the strength to drive a car, let alone return to work.
Four days later, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare told her it was time to go.
They didn’t run further scans to see why her leg was numb. They just told her it would go away. Because Alea lost her job and her health insurance just two months before the shooting, the hospital refused to send her to a rehab center.
Alea’s story is part of a systemic pattern. In Florida, uninsured gunshot victims spend significantly less time in the hospital than those with insurance — sometimes cut down to half the time. Among the most severely injured, uninsured patients are pushed out an average of three days earlier.
Meanwhile, Governor Ron DeSantis and state lawmakers are pushing to make guns cheaper and easier to get, completely ignoring a 19% increase in gun deaths over the last decade. They flood our streets with weapons, and then the system treats the survivors like bad investments.
We refuse to accept a culture that abandons people when they are most vulnerable.
March for Our Lives was founded by young people who know that true safety means more than just passing laws — it means shifting our entire culture. It means building a world where survivors are met with community, dignity, and the time they need to heal, not a hospital bill and a pair of crutches.
We are organizing on the ground, training high school and college activists, and forcing accountability from both the politicians who profit from guns and the systems that neglect the victims. We know a better world is possible because we are building it together. But we need your help to keep up the fight.
Will you donate today to support our youth-led movement and help us fight for change?
Thank you for being the breath of fresh air this movement needs. Together, we are turning our grief and our hope into unstoppable power.

This past week, ICE murdered two more people in broad daylight: Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Texas and Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Maine. Their communities are grieving, and across the country, people are demanding justice and accountability for all of the innocent people killed by ICE agents.
For those of us who care about stopping the violence, one of the most effective things we can do right now is put candidates in Congress who will end funding to DHS and ICE. Right now, SURJ is focusing on two candidates who will do just that: Will Lawrence in Michigan and Kaela Berg in Minnesota. Can you join us to call voters to make sure we put people in office who will end funding for this racist violence?
Will Lawrence (MI-07) is an organizer, coalition-builder, and co-founder of the Sunrise Movement running to represent Michigan’s Congressional District 7 in Lansing on a platform of affordable housing, healthcare for all, taxing the billionaire class, and ending US support for war overseas. Will is currently leading in nearly every poll, despite hundreds of thousands of dollars in attack ads from mainstream liberal super PACs. Primary date: August 4th.
Kaela Berg (MN-02) is an organizer, flight attendant, union leader with AFA/CWA, and a Minnesota State Representative. She has worked up to three jobs, bought groceries from the dollar store to feed her family, and lived without health insurance during a global pandemic and she is now running to represent Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District to fight for working class people like her. Primary date: August 11th.
You don’t need to be an expert on any issue, or have any phonebank experience– just show up and connect with voters like you across the country as we fight for every lever of power we can grab.

I take this job pretty seriously.
I spend a lot of time thinking about how to help every single one of the candidates we endorse win their elections. And you want to know one thing that helps me sleep at night?
It’s knowing that, since our launch in 2023, almost 16,000 of our grassroots supporters have signed up to make monthly recurring donations to Leaders We Deserve.
Use the links in this email to start a recurring contribution to Leaders We Deserve
Here’s why these recurring donations are so helpful:
- They allow us to set a baseline for what we bring in each month, so we can budget that money toward our most pressing priorities.
- They help us get to work well before Election Day. A month before the election is too late to hire and train organizers, buy TV ads, and compete with more established, well-financed campaigns.
- They help create a snowball effect for our candidates. A lot of donors and organizations look at how much early money candidates raise to inform whether they should get involved, and recurring donations let us back young, progressive candidates early on to show their credibility.
Thanks again for all your support,
David Hogg
P.S. Can’t commit to a monthly donation today? Not a problem. If you can make a one-time contribution of $25 or any amount at all, you’ll make a big difference in helping us reach our goals and elect the next generation of leaders.

Waking up every day to watch this administration dismantle our democracy piece by piece is absolutely infuriating.
And honestly, we don’t have the luxury of playing nice and waiting around for the rest of the Democratic Party to wake the hell up. Not when the fights we’re up against are this dire.
Trump is waging an illegal war in Iran that has already cost Americans an estimated $30 billion and counting. Gas is getting higher by the minute, grocery bills keep climbing, and millions of people can’t afford to go to the doctor. Working families are being left to survive a corrupt political system that continues to put the wealthy and powerful first.
This is the moment to go all in. We have to fight back on every front, with every tool at our disposal, and do more than just react. We have to build.
That means organizing against the most vulnerable Republicans and making it clear that there is a real political price to pay for enabling Trump’s dangerous agenda.
It means primarying asleep-at-the-wheel Democrats — because if they’re not fighting with us, they’re in the way.
And it means we have to turn the fracturing of Trump’s base into an opportunity — because young voters are souring on him, they’re feeling betrayed, and the window to offer them a vision worth believing in is right now.
Most importantly, we need to throw all of our support behind the leaders who feel the urgency of this moment in their bones and a fire in their belly to take on the broken system they grew up in, and change it.
That’s what Leaders We Deserve was built for. Not to be just another political organization throwing endorsements around. But to actually get in the arena — to find the fearless candidates who refuse to sit on the sidelines while their communities get left behind, put real resources behind their campaigns, and prove that the establishment doesn’t get to decide what the face of power in this Party looks like anymore.
And right now, we need you in this fight with us.
Can you pitch in $25 today to power our work?
Thank you for being part of this movement,
David Hogg

Understanding Fear-Based Politics
By Roger Rosenquist
Using fear of others to win political support is nothing new. For centuries, authoritarian movements have relied on this basic human instinct because history shows appeals to fear can help those seeking power.
American voters have been asked to support numerous dramatic and aggressive actions the Trump Administration has taken over the past 18 months, which are often justified as measures needed for our own protection.
We’re told, for instance, that our streets and cities are being taken over by foreign, criminal elements. So now we are spending billions on the capture, imprisonment, and deportation of people, including some without criminal records, and sometimes children. So, do we feel safer, or just manipulated? Secure, or aghast at the use of violence?
It’s not just our president fostering fear. There are figures in politics using the same approach of demonizing migrants and “others” for problems in America and elsewhere — now and in the past.
Fortunately, many scholars and citizens in America are recognizing and experiencing the active, current fearmongering going on now for political gains. We need to spread this awareness more broadly, however, for the good of us all.
It’s critical to our democracy that we turn away from fear and in its place support leaders and reasoned policies in support of “we the people”.

All Roads Lead to the South
By Alice Bond and LaMar Holliday
Sometimes it feels like Juneteenth all over again — not the unease of enslaved people whose freedom was declared but withheld in Texas, but something even darker. Today people are watching their voting rights being gutted by those who know exactly what they are doing.
We are living in a world of a thousand cuts, but this one cuts to the bone. On April 29, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais stripped away Section 2 of the historic 1965 Voting Rights Act. It was the last functioning leg of the act that civil rights leaders and activists fought and died for to ensure Black Americans could vote.
This decision unleashed Republicans across the country into a surreal partisan race to see who is fastest at eviscerating voting districts in majority Black districts. It is a purposeful tactic. Real world effects were sharp and direct, with speed gerrymandering beginning in Tennessee, Louisiana and Florida as soon as the day the verdict was issued.
Keep reading to learn how voting rights activists are responding.

We Can’t Let Political Leaders Cast Aside Those Lacking Healthcare
By Kay Bjornen
Higher healthcare and insurance costs since the start of 2026 have been making life rougher for people across our country. While other living costs are accelerating too, legislators seem unmoved by what the combination of higher costs and inadequate public healthcare funding is doing to their constituents.
One of the latest twists: affordable insurance is harder to find for those in lower-income brackets thanks to cuts enacted in the 2025 HR 1, the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Reduced subsidies for ACA (Obamacare) insurance have increased premium prices markedly to consumers, making the insurance unaffordable for many. Even if they can afford the higher premiums, many face high deductibles before their insurance starts covering care.
Cuts in federal subsidies to state Medicaid programs have been devastating (Medicaid is the state and federal program that pays for healthcare for low-income people, and you can read here about how age affects Medicaid eligibility. Historically, the states determine who is eligible for Medicaid and what services are covered, and the federal government reimburses some of the states’ costs.)
When the payments made by federal or state governments to hospitals for care that’s still being provided to poorer patients are reduced, the hospitals justifiably fear they might run deficits. Or, they have to consider cutting some of the medical services people seek from their facilities.
Arkansas is quickly becoming an example of how these factors can become overwhelming. We must expect elected representatives to work for us. Speak up and talk to your neighbors and friends and ask them to listen as well. Together we can make the system better.

Progressives Are Proud Patriots, Too

Did you know that progressives and moderates and independents can own and fly flags to express our patriotism, to make clear our aspirations for a more perfect union?
That the collection and display of flags are not limited to any one group of voters?
Nobody has a monopoly on the flag.
It’s due time that we take back the flag, and we can’t think of a more perfect time to build on this movement than the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America!

We Need Whole-Person Health, Not Whole Lots of Barriers
By Alice Bond and Kristen Sheppard
Healthcare is on the verge: becoming more expensive and less accessible, while public health is getting worse. Over the past two decades, depression rates have risen alongside substance abuse disorder, anxiety, loneliness, and suicide. Covid-19 accelerated that decline in wellness dramatically. The resulting combination of exponential demand and lack of political will has created enormous pressure for better policy from clinicians, researchers, advocacy organizations, states, and the public.
Why talk about this now? Because mental health is increasing its prominence in the public mind. According to an American Psychiatric Association’s Healthy Minds Poll conducted December 2025 and published in 2026, more than 1 in 3 Americans (38%) planned to make a mental health-related New Year’s resolution — up 5% from the previous year. And Rula, a national behavioral healthcare company, found in their 2026 State of Mental Health Report that “60% of adults report that mental health has become more important to them.’”
Still, Americans do not register the wider impact of mental illness on physical health. A 2026 National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI)-Ipsos Workplace Poll found that while knowledge of mental illness is growing, grasping the connection with physical illness is another story. “People see mental health as relevant and appropriate to talk about at work, and that’s encouraging. But real barriers persist in the form of stigma and fear of retaliation or lost opportunities,” said Megan Delp, NAMI’s director of workplace mental health.
Medical research and leading clinical evidence agree: mental health is bound inextricably to physical health. The 2026 World Health Organization (WHO) social messaging reinforces its longstanding position: “There is no health without mental health.”
That connection is fundamental to the healthcare system itself. A whole-person approach marks a growing shift in medicine and public policy, edging out the long-accepted notion of a clear separation between mind and body. In January 2026, New Jersey Acting Health Commissioner Jeff Brown captured that shift when announcing integrated outpatient facilities combining primary care, mental health, and addiction treatment: “Healthcare works best when patients are treated as a whole person, not a collection of separate problems.”
As healthcare nears a perfect storm, it also reveals an opportunity. Whole-person healthcare can reduce burdensome paperwork, high costs, and lack of accessibility by combining physical and mental health into one approach. Project 2029 notes that whole-person health has the potential to transform “our healthcare system from a system oriented toward high-cost and reactive treatment to one that emphasizes prevention, early intervention, and long-term wellbeing.”
Project 2029 is an organization of citizens committed to building “a plan of action for a future that is strong, kind, and prosperous.” Our paper, released March 2026, proposes health policies designed for immediate implementation on “Day One” of a 2029 Presidential administration — including “a policy foundation for eliminating any artificial distinction between physical and mental health coverage by requiring parity.”

Project 2029 also appreciates being able to alert folks — including former federal workers — of opportunities to share their knowledge in policy writing and operations areas here, just to name a couple of options. Project 2029 members all volunteer remotely over all time zones, so collaboration can be on your schedule.
If this sounds good to you individually, your Indivisible chapter, our own Ali Cleveland would love to hear your thoughts. Email: alicqc26@gmail.com with “Outreach and Indivisible” or similar wording in the subject line. If you want help finding Indivisible in your area, visit https://indivisible.org
Why Oct. 27 Should Matter to Some Voters This Year
Voters, we need to talk to you about the U.S. mail, particularly if you:
- work long or unpredictable hours,
- have to travel a lot,
- are disabled,
- live in a rural community,
- are age 65 or older,
- don’t do well standing in lines at voter precincts, or
- are in the military, serving away from home.
You might well be one of the Americans who like to vote by mail, and we applaud you for that.
This year, it could be harder to make sure your vote is counted, unless you know the specific deadlines in your state for getting your ballot into the mail and postmarked.
The postmark determines if a mail-in ballot is received on time, and that, in turn, determines whether the vote is counted or not. Your state sets the rules for that and other election matters. It should be either Election Day (Nov. 3, 2026 for the midterms) or another specific date close to the Election Day.
A recent, important, and subtle change has been made in post office procedures that affects all this. The day you mail an item, be it a completed ballot or a birthday card, may not be the same day the item gets a postmark. Your mail may now go from your local office to a regional processing center to get processed and postmarked – which can be a couple of days after you mailed it.
That means you should mail your ballot earlier than you probably have in the past! Whether it is for a primary election, get it in the mail seven days before Election Day or seven days before your state’s deadline day. Even sooner, if you can.
Some groups, including Vote.org, allow you to research your state’s deadline information online and even let you request an electronic reminder to mail your ballot.
If, for some reason, you end up at a post office or another retail postal operation with your ballot, you may go to the counter and request a manual postmark, for free, according to the Campaign Legal Center. This applies to any post office, and to any retail site, the center said, and should satisfy the rules.

“Civic Power” Report: Organizing Is How We Win Elections and Pass Bold Policies
