Tri-City Democrats – Friday, May 8, 6:00 PM
Greetings fellow Democrats!
The weather is fine, so let’s have a picnic at the farm for our May event. Friday, May 8, 6pm at 4501 W Lattin Ct, West Richland, WA. There’s some chance it will be cool, but we’ll have a fire pit and patio heaters and blankets to take the edge off. Bring a hoody! Come gather with like-minded folks and share some fellowship, food and beverages. Bring a dish to share, and Tri-City Democrats will provide utensils and plates, and napkins. We’ll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group.
Our program is to be announced, but we’ll have some announcements and we will have ‘Hate Has no Home Here’ signs available.

Columbia Basin Badger Club
Date: 5/13/2026
Subject: Badger Forum: WILDFIRE!
From: Columbia Basin Badger Club
WILDFIRE! When wildfire breaks out, who decides what happens next?
Electricity. Water. And now wildfire. Each of our recent Badger Forums has explored how the Pacific Northwest manages essential—and limited—resources. Wildfire is no different. It shapes landscapes, communities, and policy in ways few forces can.
On Wednesday, May 13, our panel of experts will unpack how wildfire decisions are made: when to let a fire burn, when to fight it, and how those choices ripple across the region.
This hybrid Badger Forum begins at 12 Noon. There is no charge to attend, either in person or online. In-person seating is limited.

Today we…
Support new arrivals through education, relationships and community so they can thrive in their new home.
In the future, we will…
Create a community of open hearts, helping hands and supportive systems where strangers become friends and we all thrive.
Do you remember learning to read? What would your life be like if you’d never had that opportunity?
Many of the students in our B5 classes are learning to read for the first time, or never really mastered reading when they were learning English. According to the Barbara Bush Foundation, 19% of adults in Benton County and 37% in Franklin County have low literacy skills, limiting their access to employment, education, and economic mobility. This helps explain why 13.4% of adults in Benton and Franklin counties have not completed a high school diploma or GED, almost double the state rate of 7.7% (Benton-Franklin Trends).

Adults with low literacy skills don’t see themselves as learners and often give up trying. Language learning and literacy go hand in hand, and learning to read in a language that is unfamiliar is even more challenging for adults than it is for kids. For this reason, a safe, encouraging environment is important to keep students working toward their goals.
At B5, we’re thankful for staff and volunteers who work diligently and persistently with students to help them on the road to success. They are equipping our students with the skills they need to become citizens, complete job applications, and get better paying jobs.

In the past, most of our students were new arrival refugees, and B5 received state funding to support them on their educational journey. Today, fewer than half of our students qualify for state funded support. More than ever, we look to our community to join us in the work by volunteering and investing in our students.
Thank you to all of you who give your time and money, so refugees and immigrants can find welcome at the doors of B5. Your donation in any amount allows us to support our programs to help newly arrived refugees THRIVE in our community. Will you join us?

FAQ from A Better Richland
Richland registered voters will vote this November to update the Richland City Council election process to be like the rest of Washington’s First-Class Cities, Pasco, and Kennewick.
Currently all seven members of the Richland council are elected “at-large.” They can live anywhere in the city. A vote to change the city charter would mean five council members would have to be elected from the districts where they live and two would still be elected “at-large”. Each of the five proposed districts would have approximately 12,000 residents. An interactive map on our website can show you in which district you would live.

Dear Friend,
Despite the tragedies we witnessed in Minnesota, and despite the human rights abuses we are seeing at ICE detention facility Delaney Hall right now, Republicans in Congress are trying to pass legislation this week that would pour an additional $70 billion in taxpayer dollars into ICE and CBP with no oversight or constraints for three years! If passed, Congress will have given away its authority to put any constraints on ICE for the entire Trump administration! Take Action Now!
This legislation comes at a moment when detained immigrants, our neighbors, coworkers, parents, and grandparents across the country, are launching hunger and labor strikes to protest inhumane conditions inside detention facilities, [1] including at Delaney Hall here in New Jersey.
People detained at Delaney Hall have reported being served spoiled food, denied access to necessary medical care, confined in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, [2] subjected to scalding-hot showers that caused burns, [3] and compelled to work for as little as $1 a day, or at times, with no compensation at all. [4]
I have also watched with alarm as my neighbors, faith leaders, advocates, and community members peacefully protesting outside the facility have been met with aggressive enforcement tactics.[5] ICE agents pepper-sprayed demonstrators and observers, including U.S. Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ) [6], and detained a U.S. military veteran who was serving as a volunteer street medic. [7] U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has called for the facility to be shut down. [8]
What makes this proposal even more troubling is that ICE and CBP already have more than $100 billion in unspent funds, with little transparency or accountability in how those resources are being used. Existing funding levels alone could sustain both agencies through the fourth quarter of 2027. [9] They do not need another cent.
Instead of investing in solutions that help families thrive, this legislation doubles down on detention, deportation, and family separation. It would expand harmful immigration enforcement policies while diverting resources away from programs that help people afford everyday life. It would also pull workers out of critical industries—including agriculture, construction, health care, child care, home care, and food service—further worsening affordability challenges for families and communities across the country.
Thank you for all that you do for our communities!
– Nadia

Dear Friend,
Early childhood development support services like Early Intervention have been a lifeline for millions of babies, toddlers, and families (mine included!) over the years. Yet right now, the Trump administration is moving to reduce and eliminate these critical services for children with disabilities as part of their ongoing efforts to undermine the needs of our nation’s families in favor of billionaires, corporations, and a ridiculous ballroom.
Tell Republican leaders in Congress: protect and fully fund Early Intervention!
Early Intervention is a federal grant program implemented by individual states under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that serves children ages 0-3. It connects infants, toddlers, and their families with appropriate developmental supports before school entry, [1] creating a strong foundation for their future in educational environments and beyond. [2] The most rigorous evidence suggests that Early Intervention services can improve children’s outcomes in areas including cognitive development, language/communication skills, behavior, and motor skills. [3] Other evidence suggests positive outcomes for parental health and wellbeing, such as maternal self-confidence and role satisfaction. [4] The bottom line is that early intervention not only provides critical developmental support to our littlest learners but also supports moms, parents, and families as well.
Early Intervention services were a crucial resource for my children and me. When my son, Zakir, turned two, his pediatrician suggested Early Intervention when it became clear that he had delays in different areas of his development. I knew that I would take whatever steps my son needed for him to thrive, but I also felt uncertainty and fear as to what the future held for him. Early Intervention ended up not only supporting my son to reach critical developmental goals, they also empowered me as the mother of a neurodivergent child. Program therapists provided weekly speech and developmental intervention services for my son for a year and a half, and during these sessions, they also taught me strategies to incorporate in our day-to-day that helped us BOTH. My son is now thriving in middle school. My second child also received Early Intervention, and just like his big brother, he is excelling socially, emotionally, and mentally. Above is a photo of Zakir and me during our Early Intervention years!
Early intervention has helped millions of families and children like mine over the past few decades, and according to the latest available data, in 2024, approximately 458,920 infants and toddlers aged 0-2 received early intervention services. [5] However, after decades of changing so many lives for the better, this program is now at risk due to President Trump’s FY27 budget, which proposes consolidating part B 619 funds of the IDEA into a single formula grant to states. This would effectively eliminate dedicated funding for personnel training and development of the therapists and staff who deliver these critical services directly to the babies and toddlers who need them. This consolidation of funds could also result in less funding available to infants and toddlers overall as part of the IDEA program, dismantling public education and disability services for babies, toddlers, and children throughout the country.
This is completely unacceptable. CLICK NOW to tell Congress NO to funneling critical funds that children and toddlers with disabilities rely on to a wasteful ballroom and further tax cuts for billionaires!
The Early Intervention program helps provide hundreds of thousands of children and families access to a future where ALL children can have a chance to grow and thrive. Any cuts or moves to eliminate programs like this are simply unconscionable. This is why speaking up together and taking action matters!
Thank you for joining us to protect the services children with disabilities depend on.

LWVWA Resisting Threats to Democracy—Action Needed
LWVWA Resisting Threats to Democracy—Action Needed

As you read this, our democracy is under threat here in Washington state. And the League of Women Voters of Washington (LWVWA) is taking action—every day—to defend it.
IN THE COURTS: We are fighting to protect voter registration rights nationwide. In a key case against U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, LWVWA submitted a sworn statement opposing efforts to block groups like the League from registering new citizens at naturalization ceremonies. This fight continues—and so do we.
IN THE LEGISLATURE: This session, LWVWA tracked 68 democracy-related bills and helped pass eight critical laws to safeguard voters and elections—strengthening protections against discrimination, stopping bad-faith voter challenges, and securing sensitive voter data.
IN OUR COMMUNITIES: We led a successful “decline to sign” campaign to stop Initiative 126, a proposal that would have made it harder to register and stay registered to vote. Now, we’re pushing back against I-500—another attempt to create those same barriers.
This is what defending democracy looks like. It’s urgent. It’s ongoing. And it works.
But we can’t do it without you.
Democracy requires constant effort—and your support makes that possible. This GiveBIG, please make a gift to LWVWA to help defend and strengthen democracy in Washington.

For more than 105 years, the League has stood up for fair elections, protected the right to vote, and helped people make their voices heard. Here in Washington, our 20 local Leagues continue that work every day.
These are challenging times for our country, and the League’s steady, nonpartisan leadership is more important than ever. We know what it takes to protect our democracy, and we know we can do it — together.
Together WE WILL.
Show up.
Speak out.
Educate.
Empower.
Defend.
I hope you’ll make a Giving Tuesday gift to support this work. Every contribution strengthens our democracy.

WAISN’s Deportation Defense Hotline and Rapid Response Teams receive reports related to immigration enforcement activity across Washington, including calls for post-detention support, sightings of immigration enforcement, and urgent alerts about detentions.
To help ensure you and your loved ones stay informed, we’re sharing some information on the reports we received from April 16–30, the trends our Rapid Response Teams are seeing, and how communities can show up to support each other.
These numbers are not just statistics, they reflect stories of family separation, surveillance, and intimidation tactics that sometimes lead to deadly consequences.
20 reports of immigration enforcement activity came through the WAISN Deportation Defense Hotline and Rapid Response Teams in the second half of March. Here’s what we saw:
25 reports of immigration enforcement activity came through the WAISN Deportation Defense Hotline and Rapid Response Teams in the second half of April

We were able to confirm the detention of 29 people, with 13 of those detentions occurring during an immigration raid in Mason County on April 29, one of the largest single-day enforcement operations in recent months.
The heaviest activity was in Mason and Whatcom counties—and particular hotspots in the cities of Shelton, Lynden, and Bellingham.
Trends to watch
While most activity in recent months has been focused on targeted individual stops, the raid in Mason County marks a shift. The operation involved 7–10 vehicles, and covered multiple locations—signaling that agencies may be testing larger-scale operations in places where they expect less vigilance.
That’s why ensuring we have Rapid Response capacity in rural areas matters so much right now. Mason County, like many rural counties in Washington, has fewer rapid response volunteers on the ground than urban areas do. When immigration agencies enter communities with less coverage, they can move faster and with less accountability.
A note on how we create these updates: These reports are informed directly by our Rapid Response Teams and calls to the Hotline from everyday people who refuse to let these agencies act in the shadows.
By working together and reporting what we see across the state, especially in rural areas, we’re able to track critical patterns and give our communities a clearer picture of what is happening on the ground.
While we prioritize accuracy over speed and only share verified patterns, your contributions are what makes this community-led reporting possible. If you see immigration enforcement first-hand or a loved one has been detained, please text or call the WAISN Hotline at 1-844-724-3737 from Monday through Friday 6am-6pm.
If your call is not answered, text the Hotline number letting us know what you are calling about in detail, and we will try to follow up.

- Date and time of sighting and activity
- Street name and description of the area where it happened
- Pictures and videos of the interaction
- Descriptions of what agents were doing and wearing, and what vehicles were present
We all have constitutional rights regardless of immigration status. You are not alone. Please know that WAISN is here to support you. Our Rapid Response Teams are ready, and our network remains alert—it was built for this moment.
In the face of threats and attacks on our collective safety, community will prevail.
In solidarity,
The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network

Thank you for making Campaign & Elections Weekend a Success!
This past weekend, the WAIDF network – fellows, alumni, partners, and friends – came together for an incredible Campaign & Elections weekend.
Speakers covered everything from the state of elections, organizational efforts, and the nuts and bolts of running a campaign, to communications and messaging, fundraising, endorsements, mailers, and field efforts. We were honored to share the day and connect with a broader network of folks doing good work in communities across Washington state. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for a day of learning.
On Sunday, the Class of 2026 had a full day of learning where they heard from Mark Rupp, Director of External Relations, at The Earth Commons at Georgetown University, who shared his career journey and experience serving Washington State in Washington, D.C. We caught up with Beth Lindsay (Class of 1999) from Invest Washington Now to hear what’s next in the fight for taxing the rich and getting millionaires to pay their fair share. We also heard from Elise Orlick from Fair Vote on proportional representation and their work to create a more representative Democracy.
Fellows ended the day with an insightful and impactful tour of Little Saigon with Vy Nguyen, Class of 2019, and Strategic Advisor at the Port of Seattle, and Huy Pham, Executive Director of APIAHiP and historic preservation advocate for Asian & Pacific Islander American communities. These two Friends of Little Saigon Board Members discussed the history of the neighborhood, the impacts of freeway redlining, and the organizations and communities that make the Little Saigon and Seattle Chinatown-International District thrive.
We look forward to seeing you at the Class of 2026 graduation on June 13!
-Emily
Save the date – Saturday, June 13 – for Class of 2026 Graduation!
Alongside celebrating the Class of 2026, we will also recognize two inaugural awards: Board Member of the Year, for exceptional contributions by a board member, and Community Partner of the Year, for outstanding support from a community partner.
Shasti Conrad, Chair of the Washington Democratic Party, will deliver this year’s keynote address. Following her, the Class of 2026 speaker will be introduced, whose name is still pending.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 14th Annual Event, Power in Partnership.
Yesterday was a powerful reminder of what this movement is made of: people who show up, refuse to accept gun violence as inevitable, and keep working toward a safer future for every community. We left feeling grounded in the strength of this community and clear-eyed about the work ahead. Because we know what is possible when we act together.
Gun violence is preventable. Lives can be saved. And every step forward happens because people like you choose to be part of this work.
If you were in the room, thank you for showing up, giving generously, and helping make the afternoon so meaningful. If you missed the event, you can watch the full livestream recording on our YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td1UbCi6a4E
And if you did not get a chance to give, there is still time to make a gift. Your support helps us strengthen the advocacy, education, partnerships, and programs that move Washington closer to a future free from gun violence.
Make a gift today: agraction.org/donate
Thank you again for being part of this movement. We are deeply grateful to do this work alongside you.
With gratitude,

MARCH NEWSLETTER
2026

30 Years Since Moses Lake – What We’ve Learned
February marked the 30th anniversary of the shooting at Moses Lake, which took three lives, including the younger brother of Alliance for Gun Responsibility CEO, Renee Hopkins. In two thoughtful Op-Ed’s published in The Spokesman-Review and Seattle’s Child, Renee revisits that fateful day and offers progressive solutions that could prevent another life-altering event like the one that occurred in Moses Lake three decades ago. Seattle’s Child: “Thirty years ago, my world stopped. I was just out of college when my brother, Arnie, was killed by a student who brought a firearm to Frontier Junior High School in Moses Lake…Arnie was 14 years old.”

Lawmakers in Olympia Hear Directly from AGR
A short session means a busy session, and that means there was no rest for the Alliance. Starting in early January, the Alliance has had a steady presence in Olympia this Legislative session. Whether it’s testifying in support of restoring funding to the Office of Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention or dozens of orange shirted activists deploying to the gallery following the floor action, you couldn’t be anywhere in the Capitol without hearing the Alliance’s message that gun violence is preventable.

We Are Deeply Disappointed
Despite the clear data, expert endorsements, and the overwhelming public support, the House failed to pass HB 1152, our Safe Storage bill. By failing to move this legislation forward, legislators missed a critical opportunity that will result in at least one more year of unaccountability for irresponsible firearm owners. It’s regrettable that after years of organizing, advocacy, and making significant investments to elect leaders who campaigned on gun violence prevention, that safe storage became a negotiating bargaining chip as well as a convenient excuse for legislators lacking courage and leadership.
So, what are we going to do? We’re going to recommit the Alliance to elevating safe storage to the top of Washington’s public safety agenda. We will foster this legislative environment with education to our gun violence prevention champions and newly elected officials on safe storage data, research and device distribution success stories. Legislators, you’re going to see the Alliance in your districts, at your Town Hall meetings, and tabling at your community events. We will be holding policy briefings, conducting trainings and organizing gun violence prevention champions across the state.
Let’s re-energize legislative support for a safe storage law
in Washington!

Alliance Helps Deliver Public Safety Win: Governor Signs Bill Cracking Down on 3D Printed Ghost Guns
A major component of the Alliance’s 2026 legislative agenda, HB 2320, was signed into law by Governor Ferguson. This is a piece of legislation that will strengthen Washington’s ghost gun statute to directly address the growing threat of untraceable, 3D-printed firearms. The Alliance for Gun Responsibility thanks the Governor, bill sponsor Representative Osman Salahuddin, and the Washington State Legislature for delivering another public safety win for communities across the state.
With the passage of HB 2320, Washington continues to take a proactive approach to closing gaps in existing law and addressing emerging risks before they escalate. The Alliance for Gun Responsibility will continue working with lawmakers and partners to advance practical, evidence-based solutions that strengthen public safety and reflect the realities communities are facing today.

AGR Field Team is Everywhere
Not only has the AGR Field Team been a constant presence in the Capitol Gallery, they’ve also been building partnerships with community organizations across Washington. In 2026, our Field Team assisted and volunteered at the Washington Youth Alliance Lobby Day, where they held meetings with legislators on key issues affecting young people in Washington – most importantly gun violence prevention. We also attended the National Survey: How Young Adults View the Health of Our Democracy Forum, which focused on how young people are thinking about a range of issues from democracy reform and gun violence prevention during these tense times. The Alliance also delivered an introductory presentation on gun violence prevention and advocacy to teens at the YMCA Clark County, and our very own, Isaiah Lenard talked about why youth engagement around gun violence prevention matters to students at Shorewood High School in Shoreline, WA.

Alliance for Gun Responsibility Launches New ‘Washington State Protection Orders’ Advertisements
Last summer, we were proud to launch a stateline online portal designed to help understand, navigate, and access civil protection orders across Washington. The website, waprotectionorders.org, is tailored to meet the needs of survivors, respondents, advocates, law enforcement and legal professionals, by consolidating information on all six types of civil protection orders in Washington.
The Alliance created a series of social media advertising campaigns in support of Washington’s Protection Orders, including this ‘Behind the Scenes’ look at the making of those advertisements. This ad – developed by our very own, Sean Kent, with a voice-over from our Communications Intern, Angelina Riley – highlights the user-friendly nature of the Washington Protection Orders website with clarity, justice and added safety measures for those who need it most.

What’s Your Favorite Sign of Spring?
Spring has sprung! Take the quiz below:

Researchers Find Pro-Gun Groups Spend Big in Elections After School Shootings
Since 1999, over 420 school shootings have occurred in the United States, exposing more than 390,000 students to gun violence. From Sandy Hook to Uvalde, in the aftermath of each tragedy come familiar rituals of prayers and calls for reform. Yet, Congress has stalled on significant gun safety reform for decades.
A recent study by researchers at Stanford Law School investigated why this gap between public concern and federal action persists, despite broad popular support for gun safety reforms. The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, claimed that political spending from gun policy groups might explain this trend.

AGR Celebrates Passage of SB5974 Ensuring Accountability and Constitutional Compliance Across All Washington Communities
The Alliance for Gun Responsibility applauds the Washington House of Representatives for passing SB5974, a comprehensive piece of legislation that modernizes and strengthens standards for sheriffs, police chiefs, and town marshals across the state. The bill ensures that all law enforcement leaders, whether elected or appointed, meet consistent professional qualifications and accountability standards. SB5974 establishes baseline eligibility requirements for law enforcement leadership, including a minimum age of 25, no felony or serious misconduct convictions that would trigger certification revocation, and a minimum of five years of relevant experience. Equally important, the legislation creates clear accountability mechanisms that apply uniformly to all police leaders when serious misconduct occurs. Under current law, a sheriff’s or police chief’s certification can be revoked, but it remains unclear whether they must be immediately removed from office. SB5974 closes this gap, ensuring that no one in charge of a law enforcement agency has less accountability than those who work for them. The passage of SB5974 comes on the heels of new polling that showed 75% of likely 2026 Washington voters enthusiastically favor strengthening qualifications and accountability standards for law enforcement leadership

Congratulations, Seattle Seahawks
As a national organization, we take tremendous pride in the work our state partners are doing in Oregon, Michigan and Maine. However, being Washington-based, we must take a moment (and some space in this newsletter) to celebrate our very own Seattle Seahawks victory in Super Bowl LXI. We were so happy that Alliance staff took a few hours off to join hundreds of thousands of our fellow Washingtonians at the Victory Parade downtown. Now that the NFL season is behind us, our thoughts now turn to the Seattle Mariners, who are rightly getting lots of World Series buzz.

In Memorandum
Cheryl was a fierce champion of gun violence prevention. After surviving the horrendous Jewish Federation shooting in Seattle in 2006, Cheryl committed her life to helping ensure others would not have to endure what she did. As the Citizen sponsor of I-594 Cheryl helped chart a new reality for GVP in Washington State. Cheryl will forever be remembered as a servant leader whose actions helped save countless lives in Washington and around the country.

Plenty has been written about the mega-millionaires and billionaires who will pay the Millionaires Tax. We’re taking big steps toward fixing our tax code and asking the super rich to pay what they owe, but the payers of this tax are less than 0.5% of the story…
The other 99.5% of the story is how this tax affects everyday Washingtonians. Whether you’re a small business owner seeking a boost from B&O tax cuts, a parent struggling to find child care, or just someone who could use extra cash, the new Millionaires Tax will probably help you.
So what could the Millionaires Tax mean for you personally?. That’s where our quiz comes in.
Let us know in quiz comments what you think. As Lu Hill wrote in the Spokesman-Review, “When everyone pays what they truly owe – including millionaires – our neighbors can access the services and programs they need to build a good life.”
The Millionaires Tax is a step toward a Washington where everyone has that chance. Including you.
In solidarity,
Ben, Invest in WA Now
WHAT’S IN IT FOR US? DIGGING INTO THE MILLIONAIRES TAX AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR 99% OF US.

What’s harder to measure than all of these benefits is something that’s just as important: the millionaires tax means a state tax code that is more just and equitable and that better funds our state budget. Our state budget is a moral document. It reflects the values of the people who live here.
More – Lu Hill, The Spokesman-Review
IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE GREAT WEALTH, BUT SEATTLE’S ‘WEALTH WALK’ MAKES YOU FEEL IT

After walking a mile, we are billionaires, but we’re nowhere near Gates and his neighbors. To become richer than Elon Musk, richest man in the world, by my count we’d need to walk clear across the lake, over the mountains, past Montana’s border.
At the end, Purcell reminds me about that dollar he gave me. He tells me to keep it.
“A dollar is no longer a useful unit of measurement when we think about the super wealthy,” Purcell said. “ But every dollar has the same amount of power as every other dollar, and what we choose to do with that money shapes our neighborhoods, shapes our cities, shapes our world.”
REPORT: WA IS AMONG THE MOST EXPENSIVE STATES FOR INFANT CHILDCARE CENTER SPOTS

Heidi Bugbee, executive director of Generations Early Learning & Family Center in Bellingham, said she’s noticed families will sacrifice a consistent care schedule due to a lack of affordability. Some might ask the grandparents or their neighbors to babysit on certain weekdays because they can’t cover the expense of enrolling their kid five days a week. She encourages people to advocate for Washington to expand the number of families who qualify for subsidies. Some may decide that staying home with their kids makes more fiscal sense than going to work, which affects the broader economy, she said.

WASHINGTON STATE’S BUDGET HAS BEEN SHRINKING, NOT GROWING, DESPITE STATEMENTS TO THE CONTRARY BY FORMER ELECTED OFFICIALS

There have been times when we increased state expenditures, and those were followed by times when we cut them. For example, after revenue fell in the late aughts, during the Great Recession, the Legislature and Governor Gregoire used severe austerity measures to balance the budget. They did not raise taxes on the wealthy, as their successors have done. Consequently, the state limped along with fewer dollars from a tax code that remained antiquated, regressive, and behind the growth of the economy.
Their decisions left us in a hole and we’re still digging out of it.
More – Andrew Villeneuve, The Cascadia Advocate
THE CASE FOR CALIFORNIA’S WEALTH TAX

This arrangement violates basic principles of fairness, deprives the government of revenue it needs for public services and fuels wealth concentration. Overwhelming wealth becomes power — power to influence the direction of corporate behemoths, power to sway society through donations and media ownership, power to steer politics through unlimited campaign contributions to super PACs. Elon Musk’s recent adventures in the executive branch, after spending hundreds of millions of dollars to help elect Donald Trump, demonstrate how quickly concentrated wealth can transmute into political control.
More – Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman, The New York Times
FERGUSON VOWS TO VETO ANY EXPANSION OF WA ‘MILLIONAIRES TAX’

“One more thing voters should know: so long as I am Governor I will veto ANY attempt to lower the threshold or raise the rate of this tax — we are asking those who make the most to pay a little more, and providing relief to workers and small businesses. Let’s keep it that way,” Ferguson wrote.

- WA Supreme Court Bats Down Referendum Attempt Targeting Millionaires Tax
- What does ‘millionaires tax’ mean for regular WA families? Here’s what it does
- Our Tax System Should Make You Furious
You have probably heard some scare tactics in the last few weeks. A few people are claiming the Millionaires Tax will cause billionaires and mega-millionaires to move from Washington to Florida, the only state with a more regressive tax code than ours.
As one economist told the New York Times about the wealth flight boogeyman: “It is largely indeed a myth, and it’s more than that — it’s frankly almost propaganda.”
You can help calm the rhetoric by sharing these key points:
- NY raised taxes on the super-rich and…. now has more millionaires. NY has one of the highest tax rates for the rich in the U.S. but research by the Fiscal Policy Institute found that wealthy residents of New York were less likely to move out of state than those in other income groups, and that they did not leave in large numbers after a major tax increase in 2021. In fact, the number of millionaire tax filers in New York City has grown over the last decade, from about 25,000 in 2014 to 34,300 in 2023.
- New Jersey and Massachusetts also raised taxes on millionaires and …. crickets. Other states have raised income taxes on millionaires, including New Jersey in 2020 and Massachusetts in 2022, and did not see significant departures. In Massachusetts, lawmakers approved a 4 percent tax on incomes over $1 million, and revenue has exceeded expectations.
- Here in Washington, there are more millionaires than ever, even after the capital gains tax passed. A study by the Institute of Policy Studies found that the “millionaire class” grew by almost 50% in Washington state following the implementation of our capital gains tax. So far, that tax has raised over $1 billion for child care, early learning, and education.
But just as Brian Heywood and his friends tried and failed by a 30 point margin to repeal the capital gains tax and reverse these investments, they’re trying and failing so far to take down the Millionaires Tax. On Monday, the Washington State Supreme Court shot down their first attack on the tax.
Remember, these attempts aren’t just a gambit by a few mega-millionaires to give themselves tax cuts, they might also slash vital funding we just won for healthcare, education, and childcare, AND reverse the sales tax exemptions, Working Families Tax Credit, and small business tax cuts we fought so hard for.
Thank you for being part of this movement. Every one of us will be needed to defend and protect the Millionaires Tax from attack.
Ben
FIRST ATTACK ON MILLIONAIRES TAX FAILS

“Today’s Washington State Supreme Court ruling is another loss in California hedge-fund manager Brian Heywood’s record of failed efforts to give himself a tax cut. He lost by nearly 30 points with his attempt to repeal the capital gains tax on mega-millionaires and billionaires. Now he is trying to repeal the popular Millionaires Tax that not only funds urgent needs in healthcare and education, it puts much needed money into the pockets of working families and small businesses struggling to afford the basics.”

WA SUPREME COURT BATS DOWN REFERENDUM ATTEMPT TARGETING MILLIONAIRES TAX

In the ruling, justices said the income tax’s so-called “necessity clause,” which shields it from a referendum, is valid.
The law “undisputedly generates revenue for the state’s existing institutions and hence is similarly subject to the ‘support of state government’ exception to the referendum power,” reads the decision signed by Chief Justice Debra Stephens.

DO HIGHER TAXES DRIVE THE RICH AWAY? EXPERTS SAY NO

Gabriel Zucman, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley, who appeared with Mr. Mamdani on Tax Day, said research clearly showed that the rich would not leave en masse.
“It is largely indeed a myth, and it’s more than that — it’s frankly almost propaganda,” he said. “There’s not a zero response. But it’s very small.”

WHAT DOES ‘MILLIONAIRES TAX’ MEAN FOR REGULAR WA FAMILIES? HERE’S WHAT IT DOES

Annie Kucklick, policy and research associate with the Economic Opportunity Institute (EOI), a Seattle-based think tank that fights for progressive revenue, said benefits from the income tax depend on the person. But she did break down three ways that she thinks the bill will be a boon for Washingtonians.
In the first bucket: families who will get help from the expansion of the Working Families Tax Credit, Kucklick said. The second bucket would be those who will save money thanks to the sales tax exemption for diapers, hygiene products and over-the-counter meds. The final bucket? Small business owners.
Kucklick said the tax will mean relief for working households with small children and for those not currently eligible for the WFTC.

OUR TAX SYSTEM SHOULD MAKE YOU FURIOUS

You may remember that in 2021, ProPublica published an investigation built on a bunch of leaked tax documents revealing what the richest Americans really pay — or don’t. Warren Buffett had a true tax rate of 0.1 percent; Jeff Bezos had 0.98 percent; Michael Bloomberg had 1.3 percent.
We know what they paid. So what is it they’re doing? How does it work? And what can we actually do about it?

We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the record breaking support we received from this community at this year’s annual gala. Together, we raised over $1.6 million dollars to continue defending and advancing immigrant rights in the months and years to come. At the event, I shared that while the past year has been a challenging one, we are making a difference because this community refuses to look away, refuses to stay silent, and refuses to accept injustice.
Over the past year, we have expanded our reach and deepened our impact. Our Community Outreach team has connected thousands of people with critical information. And in 2025, we reached over 25,000 people through community outreach efforts.
Our staff and pro bono volunteers, day after day, stand beside community members in immigration detention who are facing some of the most isolating and unjust conditions imaginable, and are working to ensure our clients can seek the protections for which they are eligible. At the event, we shared a video highlighting this ongoing work through interviews with our staff, pro bono attorney Amy Bowles, and community member Tsimba Phukuta – which you can view at this link.
Through our work and partnerships, we are building something bigger than any one organization—an ecosystem of support that stretches from local communities, to the entire state of Washington, and across the country.
Together, we will continue this work. Together, we will be ready to respond and meet this moment with courage. And together, we will ensure that our communities are not only protected, but that they can thrive – because we all deserve to thrive. Thank you for your continued support. We also invite you to view photos from photographer Tawfiq Abdulaziaz at this link, and photobooth pictures from the event here.
Teresa Zepeda Sosa’s Story
We were honored to have keynote speaker Teresa Zepeda Sosa share her story at our gala this year. Teresa is a former NWIRP client, a small business owner, and one of the founding members of Parque Padrinos – a grassroots organization that celebrates and empowers the South Wenatchee and surrounding communities. In addition to these accomplishments, Teresa is a powerful immigrant rights advocate and social justice leader in her community. For those of you who were unable to attend, we are including a shortened version of her speech at this link.

USCIS Announces New Policy Limiting Adjustment of Status (AOS) Applications
Last week, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced a new policy aimed at limiting one of the most common and important pathways to lawful permanent residence—adjustment of status–an application filed from within the United States. Once again, in pursuit of its anti-immigrant agenda, the Trump administration seeks to erase legal pathways enacted by Congress, claiming that adjustment of status is a “loophole” that should be fixed. However, adjustment of status is a statutory benefit, enacted by Congress precisely to ensure that families are not needlessly separated and that employers are not needlessly deprived of essential employees for months or even years. Moreover, in arguing that applicants should be forced to return to their home countries to finalize the process, the administration cynically sidesteps that many applicants, if forced to leave the United States, will face additional barriers that would render them ineligible to return to the United States for ten years. The new policy flouts the current laws and is meant to once again intimidate, confuse, and create chaos. We are currently working with partners to ensure that this new policy is exposed for what it is–an unlawful effort to ignore controlling laws designed to provide a clear path for family and employment visas.

Northwest Immigrant Rights Project

Every day in this country, immigrants are expected to represent themselves in immigration court. Unlike individuals in the criminal court system, immigrants facing removal or deportation proceedings in immigration court are generally not appointed an attorney to represent them.
In these proceedings, they are asked to explain what they have lived through, why they are afraid, and what will happen if they are forced to return. The questions are complex and intrusive, often re-triggering past traumas while actively creating new ones. The setting is unfamiliar and highly formal. The language is often not their own.
And the stakes could not be higher.
This is happening every day, in courtrooms across the country.
This includes children, youth, and, yes, even infants who must represent themselves.
At NWIRP, we serve people across this harmful and unjust system—adults, families, and young people—working to ensure no one is left to navigate their immigration cases alone.
But for infants, children, and youth, the stakes take on a different weight.
In our Unaccompanied Children Program (UCP)—which is one of two dedicated programs at NWIRP focused on children and youth—24 attorneys and legal advocates work directly with roughly 550 young clients each year. They prepare them, represent them, and remain a steady presence of support through every stage of their case.
But that work is becoming increasingly unstable, as UCP is a federally-funded program now operating under the Trump administration and its aggressive new immigration enforcement model: one that is built on mass detention, aggressive inland raids, and the utilization of third countries for removals.
Currently, funding for this program is only secured through July 31. Beyond that, there is no clear long-term path. Thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children and youth will be impacted nationwide, and the consequences will be immediate.
Let me be clear in stating this: NWIRP will not step away from those already in our care. Every one of them will be supported through the full duration of their case, so long as resources allow.
But the pressure on this work is intensifying, and the gaps between what our clients need and what systems provide continues to widen.
Let me also be clear in stating that community support will matter more in the months and years ahead.
It’s imperative that immigration legal defense not be under-resourced, especially in today’s climate, so I invite you to make a donation today to support our collective efforts to protect others.
If you choose to act alongside our growing community of supporters, your donation will help ensure NWIRP’s ability to remain nimble while continuing to defend community members of all ages—right now, and without interruptions.
Thank you for making this work possible. With you and so many others on our side, we can meet the challenges of today while helping build a more just system in its place.

With deep gratitude and determination,

Malou Chávez (she/her/ella)
Executive Director
P.S. I hope you will make plans to join us at our next Immigration Update webinar on Thursday, May 21 at 5 p.m. (English) and 5:45 p.m. (Spanish) for the latest on policy changes, community impact, and how to protect one another—plus time for Q&A. Register here.

It’s Michaela Berendt.
Recently, I shared a little of my story with you and why I’m so proud to be working with No Hate in WA State.
As a 6’3” cisgender woman and former athlete, I spent so many years feeling hyper-aware of how people judged my body and whether I fit into someone else’s idea of what a girl should look like.
I learned firsthand how challenging it can be when people decide you don’t belong because of how you look.
That experience is one reason I care so deeply about defeating IL26-001 and IL26-638.
These initiatives would make life harder for students who are already navigating some of the most challenging and confusing years of their lives. They would encourage suspicion rather than understanding, division rather than belonging, and put vulnerable young people directly in the political crosshairs. And they would force girls across the state to undergo invasive genital exams.
No student should be questioned, singled out, or made to feel ashamed simply for being who they are or participating in sports that they love. Tomorrow is our final end-of-month fundraising deadline, and the work we’re doing right now will determine how effectively we can reach Washington voters in the months ahead.
From voter outreach and community events to digital advertising and grassroots organizing in every corner of our state, every part of this campaign depends on the resources we raise today.
Thank you for standing with us!
Michaela Berendt

Happy almost-Pride! We hope you’ll join us to celebrate. Here are this week’s campaign updates.
Campaign Updates:
-WE ARE HIRING! NHWS is looking for four regional field organizers (two have been filled!) near the following metro areas: Olympia, Seattle, Spokane, and Tacoma. If you are interested in applying, or know someone who may be, please view the job description for details here.
-MERCH IS HERE! Our official store launched last week!, and we are so excited to share it with all of you. Grab all of these items: yard signs, hats, canvas tote bags, stickers, along with adult and children’s-sized t-shirts, tanks, hoodies, and bumper magnets. We’d like to give a huge thank you to the graphic designers who’ve made this possible, and if you’re a graphic designer, we’d love to work with you. Keep an eye out as we add more items in the future!
–RSVP for our LAUNCH EVENT! We’re excited to share that No Hate in WA State’s general election kickoff is Wednesday, June 17th at 5:15p at Neumos in Capitol Hill, with special guests Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, King County Executive Girmay Zahilay, Councilmember Dionne Foster, STANCE Choir and more to be announced. We are only at 30% of our goal – RSVP and join us here! Help us reach folks starting today by including us in upcoming emails or newsletters, using this email blurb here.

-Our social media toolkit is here! You can help us expand our reach, and build a counter-narrative to anti-LGBTQ+/anti-trans rhetoric wherever you have socials. Check it out here to get started!
-Coalition meetings are here every week! Registration is now required to receive a meeting invitation. Please register so they’re on your calendar and feel free to share with any other supporters who may want to join.
–We have nearly 180+ endorsing organizations and 95 elected officials who’ve endorsed!📈✨ Thank you for endorsing and spreading the word to make this growing coalition possible. A few of our recent endorsers from the last week include: Edmonds School Board Director Thom Garrard, Pierce County Council District 1 Candidate Kelsey Barrans, Island County Commissioner Janet St. Clair, along with the Asian and Pacific Islander Coalition of Washington, the Holocaust Center for Humanity, along with One America Votes.
–Campaign social media is live!📸📱 Please follow our official accounts on Instagram (@nohateinwastate), Threads (@nohateinwastate), Bluesky (@nohateinwastate.bsky.social), and Facebook (No Hate in WA State) then like our posts, comment and share! You can (and should!) do this from your personal and organizational accounts. This organic social media reach will go a long way in increasing our campaign’s visibility and awareness of the initiatives.
Coming Up:
-No Hate is hosting fundraisers all across the state, and we’d love to see you there! RSVP using the following links: [May 28th – TONIGHT] Olympia, [May 30th] Seattle, [June 18th] Bellingham, [June 30th] Port Townsend, and [July 11th] Olympia.
-Pride Month is around the corner!🌈 NHWS wants to have a presence at as many events as possible through WA. If you and your organization will be at an upcoming Pride event this season, please let us know through this survey. If you are interested in volunteering, or know someone who may be, we have a form for that as well!
Opposition Updates:
-Conservative mega donor Brian Heywood and his PAC, Let’s Go Washington, are under investigation for violating campaign finance laws. Read more in The Seattle Times story.
Other Calls to Action:
-Check out and take advantage of our multiple fundraising toolkits! Defeating these initiatives against a mega millionaire-backed campaign won’t be easy and requires resources. You can help us overcome our biggest challenge by cohosting a fundraiser and using both our houseparty toolkit and digital fundraising toolkit to help you get started. Please email Libby (libby@nohateinwastate.org) and Michaela (michaela@alkiconsulting.com) to talk next steps on fundraising.
–Write a letter to the editor! Talking points, templates, and publications that accept LTEs are all conveniently located on our website page. More letters to the editor from our supporters help balance out the media coverage that has disproportionately covered our opposition’s talking points. Here’s a great example from the Cascadia Daily News!

Indivisible Rural Program [2021 WORKING DOC]

Hello Indivisible Red & Rural Caucus,
Thank you again to everyone who joined our first Red & Rural Caucus call of 2026. It was wonderful to connect with organizers from across the country and spend time thinking about the work ahead. During the call, we shared updates on what’s happening at Indivisible, reflected on insights from our 2025 caucus survey, and discussed how rural organizers can plug into the No Kings campaign and upcoming mobilizations. Check out the recording below.
NO KINGS 3 Host Resources
As you know, we’re gearing up for No Kings 3 on March 28th, and many of you will be hosting rallies in your communities. Based on the feedback from your survey responses, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help make your event a success. Check them out below.
Coming Up
Our next cal will be on April 14th at 7:30 PM ET. We’ll hear from rural No Kings hosts about lessons learned from their events, share practical tools for sustaining rural organizing and expanding local networks, and reflect on next steps for building community power. We can’t wait to share this space with you!
In Solidarity,
The Indivisible Red and Rural Caucus Team

Hello Indivisible Red & Rural Caucus,
As February comes to a close, we celebrate Black history and its deep roots in rural communities, from farming and land stewardship to labor organizing, mutual aid, faith leadership, and civic engagement. These often-overlooked stories show how Black people have shaped rural life and democracy for generations and remind us of the power of organized communities, power we will carry into our work together in 2026.
First Red and Rural Caucus Call of 2026
We didn’t get a chance to connect in February, but we’re looking forward to seeing everyone next month!
Our next Red and Rural Caucus call will be a little different. We’re meeting on Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 PM ET, a change from our usual schedule to avoid conflicting with all the No Kings 3 trainings happening during the week.
The session will be facilitated by our Campaigns Director, Gracey, a fresh face to guide our conversation on the plan for 2026, and Tim, our Mobilization Director, who will explore how members can plug into No Kings while building power in red and rural communities.
Register below to receive reminders. We have many exciting plans for 2026 and can’t wait to see you there!
NO KINGS 3
We’re gearing up for the next round of No Kings protests, and we’d love to hear from you. Let us know whether you’re planning to host a No Kings event in your community, and what kind of support you’d need to make it a success. Whether you’re just starting to think about it or already organizing, we’re here to support you.
Take Action Now
Republicans are once again pushing for a series of voter suppression bills—all variations of their infamous “SAVE Act”, which would create unnecessary obstacles for millions of eligible Americans trying to register to vote.
Congress is negotiating new funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at a moment when ICE and CBP are inflicting real harm on communities. This resource breaks down what we’re demanding and how you can take action.
In Solidarity,
The Indivisible Red and Rural Caucus Team

If you’ve been watching Hacks, you already know Mayor Jo. She’s the gun-toting, news-ignoring, deeply unhinged Las Vegas politician who shows up whenever Deborah Vance needs a powerful friend to make a problem disappear.
She’s got juice. She’s got connections. And somehow, she keeps winning.

I live in Vegas. I know what politics here looks like up close in a purple state. I can tell you that Mayor Jo didn’t become Mayor Jo by filing paperwork and knocking doors. She built it one relationship at a time, long before her name was on the ballot.
Now, I’m not saying go full Mayor Jo (please don’t). But the underlying truth is that visibility and trust before you ever formally run is everything.
That’s exactly why I want you to join NDTC TODAY from 1–2 PM ET for a free Virtual Live Training
In just one hour, you’ll learn how to:
• Build early support for your decision to run using a proven three-step process
• Establish an authentic personal brand and create real relationships — not just a contact list
• Mobilize your earliest supporters to help get your campaign off the ground from day one
This training is made for you if you’re seriously considering a run but haven’t formally filed yet. That window — right now, before the paperwork — is the most valuable time you have. Don’t waste it.
Unlike Mayor Jo, we’re not going to hand you political power through absurd backroom deals. We’re going to help you earn it the right way.
See you then!
Warmly,
Ada Recinos

Before I came to NDTC, I spent years working in digital fundraising.
ActBlue was my bread and butter. I was in it every single day, seeing what messages raised the most money, tweaking the ask, refreshing the dashboard.
I learned that a great fundraising tool like ActBlue gets you far, but a great fundraising strategy behind it is what takes your campaign all the way.
So if you’re only halfway there, join us for our free training, Planning Your Fundraising Strategy at 1 pm ET TODAY!
In one hour, you’ll learn how to set realistic goals and track your progress, what factors should actually shape your strategy, and how to adapt whether benchmarks are met, missed, or exceeded.
This training is built for campaigns in the early stages of planning: candidates, campaign managers, and finance staff who are responsible for deciding how the campaign will raise money.
Let’s build something that lasts, one donation at a time.

NDTC Content Creation and Production Manager

Republicans gave us an opening
From the desk of Bibek, Senior Digital Strategist
Texas had a big Tuesday.
NDTC learner Christian Menefee won his Democratic primary runoff for TX-18, pulling nearly 70% of the vote in a race that was engineered to erase him. Republicans gerrymandered two sitting Black Democratic leaders into the same district, forced a fight that didn’t need to happen, and then watched Menefee win anyway. It was the district’s fourth election in seven months. Voters are tired, but they still made their choice about what comes next.

On the Republican side, Ken Paxton beat four-term Senator John Cornyn by 28 points. How does that happen? Trump endorsed Paxton, a man whose FBI investigation, impeachment, and assorted scandals fill a dense Wikipedia page. Republicans looked at all of that and said: yes, him. Now Paxton faces James Talarico in November, and Democrats have a real shot at their first Texas statewide win since 1994.
They dealt us a winnable matchup. Let’s not waste it.
And NDTC had 22 learners on the ballot in Tuesday’s Texas runoff. 8 wins, 3 races still counting, including one underdog. We are fighting at every level in every state. Want to be part of that fight? T

Why this story matters:
NY Democrats are pushing two constitutional amendments to allow mid-decade redistricting and reform the Independent Redistricting Commission. Neither kicks in before 2028, but they’re building the tools to fight back.
Why this story matters:
The CBC wrote to 250+ major corporations that pledged support for voting rights after George Floyd’s murder and asked them to actually mean it. Patagonia said yes. The rest have been real quiet.

Have you ever texted with a friend from another country or called a family member who lives abroad? If you have, President Trump could have the ability to secretly spy on these communications.
Congress is voting as soon as tomorrow on whether to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act – an often-abused program the government has used to surveil our phone calls, text messages, and emails without a warrant.
Members of the Trump administration, like Stephen Miller, have openly called for Americans who criticize the government to be investigated. Now, those same government officials are pressuring Congress to extend this program without any reforms.
Tell the Senate to refuse to reauthorize Section 702 without critical safeguards.
Section 702 is a mass warrantless surveillance program that the CIA, FBI, and NSA have abused for years. Presidents of both parties have used it to spy on peaceful protesters, lawmakers, campaign donors, journalists, and even judges. And each time politicians try to rein this dangerous program in, the government uses fear tactics to convince them not to.
Section 702 is up for reauthorization again right now, which means Congress has a choice to make:
They can either take this moment to create real safeguards for our rights, protect our privacy, and keep the government from spying on Americans. Or, they can succumb to pressure from the White House – and give President Trump a blank check to spy on Americans for the rest of his time in office.
Thanks for your action,

Friends,
This year’s Midterm elections are some of the most consequential in modern history, and it is critical now more than ever that underrepresented groups, particularly women — Black, Brown, and Indigenous women and women of color, as well as young women, LGBTQ+, and unmarried women — run for office and win.
And Emerge women are here to deliver.
From Georgia all the way to Oregon, Emerge women have been sweeping the primaries, with an overall reported win rate of 81% so far!
But our work is not over -– and we need your help. Can you help us reach our end of month fundraising goal of $10,750? Your gift will help us train more women to run for office and win, in 2026 and beyond.

Friends,
Memorial Day is a time to honor and mourn the U.S. military personnel who lost their lives in service to our country, including the women who have served throughout American history — often long before they were formally acknowledged or accepted.
After the Civil War, Memorial Day became an official day of remembrance for the Americans who died in service, including the estimated 400 to 1,000 women who secretly fought by disguising themselves as men. One of the most notable was Sarah Emma Edmonds, who enlisted in the 2nd Michigan Infantry under the name Franklin Flint Thompson, and later became the only woman to receive a veteran’s pension for Civil War service. Reflecting on her decision to serve, she wrote, “I could only thank God that I was free and could go forward and work, and I was not obliged to stay at home and weep.”
Her story represents only a fraction of the over 3 million women who have served in or alongside the armed forces since the American Revolution.
At Emerge, we believe representation matters because stories like these matter. By recognizing the women who have served, sacrificed, and paved the way for future generations, we continue the work of ensuring their contributions are seen, remembered, and celebrated.

Marching Orders is your behind-the-scenes look at how we’re building power at Women’s March. Here’s what we’re up to.
The Epstein Library: 3.5 Million Pages, and Still No Justice
The Epstein files now fill a Manhattan reading room, 3.5 million pages the powerful spent decades hiding. We carried this fight to Zorro Ranch and into the streets, standing with the survivors at the center of it. The government stalled its investigation while Epstein’s enablers kept their freedom. The only person ever convicted for his trafficking network is a woman, while the powerful men he served walked free. More than 150 survivors are still waiting for justice. We fight until that changes. Next stop, Washington, D.C..
Rejecting AI Data Centers in Rural America
The Feminist Flyover Project is fighting the onslaught of data centers in rural communities. Women’s March took a trio of Panhandle women to Austin to tell the Texas Water Development Board what we want: accountability, protected water, and a future that puts people over billionaire profit.
Data centers land hardest on women. When one drains a town’s water, the woman stretches a budget across heat, food, and rent and gets the call when the bill climbs. When thousands of construction workers flood a rural county, sex trafficking follows, and girls pay the price. The men who profit are the same men funding the war on our rights.
If you want to stop AI data center devastation, join the Feminist Flyover Project.
All Roads Lead to the South Voting Rights Rallies
Women’s March turned out from Montgomery to Selma after Louisiana v. Callais gutted the Voting Rights Act, defending Black political representation and majority-Black districts across the South. The freedom to vote is a women’s issue. Black women carry the highest turnout in the country, and the districts on the chopping block are where they turned that turnout into real power. Women won that right with their bodies in 1965. We refuse to hand it back.
Meet Women’s March’s New Volunteer Coordinator, Nicole
Meet Nicole Maldonado, our new Volunteer Coordinator.
Nicole is one of us. Raised in Colombia by her mother and grandmother, she came up learning that you fight for the people you love and the community that raised you. As organizing manager at the ACLU of Oklahoma, she built grassroots campaigns, mobilized volunteers, and forged coalitions taking on immigration, LGBTQ+ rights, policing, and democracy. In 2024 she put her own name on the ballot for the Oklahoma State House to win representation for communities that rarely get it.
Now she is building the program that turns first-time volunteers into the leaders this movement runs on, with clear ways in and real training for anyone ready to work. She is here to bring through the next wave of organizers this country needs. If that’s you, find her and sign up.
We Fund Feminists
Since launching in March 2026, the Feminist Frontline Fund has awarded 12 grants and built 3 partnerships. A movement is only as strong as its roots, so we’re putting money straight into the people doing the real work on the ground, in communities across the country. Power grows from there.
Apply here for a grant, and let’s fund the feminist work in your community.

Far-right tradwife influencers, Christian nationalists, and MAGA talking heads are openly arguing that households should get one vote, cast by the husband or “head of household.”
In plain English? Women lose their independent vote. It sounds fringe. But so did overturning Roe.
And it’s part of a larger project already underway: gutting the Voting Rights Act, attacking mail voting, gerrymandering districts, suppressing student voters, and pushing women back into “traditional” roles at home and out of public life.
Authoritarian movements attack democracy and women’s autonomy at the same time.
With clear eyes,

Dear fellow MoveOn member,
I’ve spent decades in Washington and decades studying how power works in America. I’ve watched movements rise and fall. I’ve seen what happens when the people fight back—and what happens when they don’t.
So when I tell you that MoveOn’s just-released 2026 election plan is the real deal, I mean it. I’ve looked at this carefully. And I believe in it.
Will you start a monthly donation of $5 to help make the next two years look nothing like the time we’re living through now?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
Here’s what I know: Trump didn’t win in 2024 because America wanted what he was selling. He won because millions of voters who would have been with us stayed home.
Not because they love authoritarianism or billionaire tax cuts or the gutting of public services. But because too many Democratic candidates gave them no compelling reason to show up.
Cautious, corporate-friendly half-measures don’t inspire turnout. They kill it.
I’ve been saying this for years. The Democratic Party cannot keep taking Wall Street cash and Big Tech money and then wonder why working people don’t trust it.
MoveOn gets this.
And they have a compelling plan for victory. MoveOn’s in-house analysts spent the past year combing through the numbers from 2024. What they found should stop you cold. In 11 battleground congressional districts, the number of MoveOn members who skipped voting in 2024 exceeds the margin of victory needed to flip those seats in November.
These MoveOn members—people who sign petitions, call Congress, show up to No Kings protests—sat out the election. Not because they gave up on their values. But because the Democratic Party failed them. Our rigged economic system failed them. That’s an enormous difference. And it means MoveOn has a direct line to the very voters who will decide these races.
That’s why I’m asking: Will you to start a monthly donation of $5 today? This program is built around connecting with exactly those voters—people MoveOn already has a relationship with—earning back their trust, and turning them out to vote. That is a winnable fight. But only if we fund it.
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
I also want to say something about the stakes, because I don’t think we should mince words.
What we are living through right now is not normal politics. Rent, groceries, healthcare, childcare—the basic costs of a decent life are crushing working families. And what do Republicans offer? Hundreds of billions in tax cuts for the ultrawealthy, blank checks for war with Iran and unmasked agents terrorizing our communities, and a $1.8 billion trust fund for January 6 rioters. That is not a governing agenda. That is a heist.
This is what unchecked power looks like. And the only thing that checks it is a Congress that doesn’t rubber-stamp it.
If Democrats win back the House this November, the era of Trump governing without accountability is over. We get subpoena power. We get a check on the cruelty and the corruption. We begin the hard work of rebuilding.
I have given a lot of my life to the belief that democracy can deliver for ordinary people—that government can be a force for good when it’s accountable to the people rather than to the powerful. MoveOn is fighting for that belief. Their plan is serious, their data is rigorous, and the moment we are in is as urgent as any I have seen.
Please, will you start a monthly donation of $5 and help us end MAGA’s grip on Congress—and start building an economy and a country that work for everyone.?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
The power belongs to us. Let’s use it.
Thanks for all you do.
–Robert Reich
P.S. In 11 congressional districts, the MoveOn members who didn’t vote in 2024 are enough to flip the seat this November. Your monthly donation of $5 to MoveOn will help us make sure they show up.
Want to support MoveOn’s work? Donald Trump and his MAGA allies expect us to give up. But we will not give them what they want. We will never stop working to defend our fundamental freedoms and protect our democracy. MoveOn has been leading the movement against right-wing extremism for 26 years, and we promise you that we will still be here every step of the way forward.

Dear MoveOn member,
Today, MoveOn is making a very important announcement: We are launching our 2026 election program—a $27 million game plan designed to crush MAGA at the ballot box by huge margins, elect a wave of populist leaders, and win lasting political power to make life better and more affordable for working people.
We have learned our lesson from 2024. Running against Trump is not enough, and, as we have long argued, Democrats cannot continue taking corporate money, governing for the billionaires, and offering working families cautious half measures when the moment demands fury and vision.
As reported in Politico this afternoon, MoveOn is tossing out the old playbook and endorsing only candidates who will fight like hell to deliver for us, lower healthcare costs, and build an America we can afford.1 And we have a unique game plan—built over thousands of hours by organizing experts and seasoned data scientists—for winning. In a second we will tell you about our program, but first:
We need our big announcement to come out of the gate with a bang and help sustain our work through November. Will you invest $5 a month to power MoveOn’s 2026 election program?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
Our data and political teams have spent the last year analyzing, planning, and assessing just what it will take to build back the power we need to thwart Trump. As they analyzed what went wrong in 2024, one thing became crystal clear: Trump won the 2024 election because voters who usually vote Democratic didn’t turn out.2
Some were voters who felt left behind because they didn’t feel their lives would improve under Democratic or Republican governance. Others were highly engaged progressives who had lost hope and trust in Democrats’ ability to be a bold and effective voice for the people.
But we can turn this around. As our in-house data scientists pored over reams of datasets for thousands of hours, they found an absolutely shocking statistic: In 11 battleground districts, the number of MoveOn members who skipped out voting in 2024 exceeds the margin of victory needed to win these races in the 2026 midterms.
That is why our 2026 election program is centered around engaging, mobilizing, and turning out these exact voters—“the skippers”—who will make the difference this November.
And the skippers are reachable. Because they are MoveOn members, we are able to call and text them and to send mail or volunteers to their door. And equally important, at a time when trust in the media and institutions is historically low, they know us.
We’re also not throwing our money at big TV ad buys that most voters will tune out. Instead, we’re investing in trusted local content creators and deepening our member-to-member outreach—which the data shows are far more effective ways to reach voters than spending millions on TV, especially when that audience is dwindling.
MoveOn is uniquely positioned to reach the skippers. Because we’re not starting from scratch. They are MoveOn members and already have a relationship with the organization. Thanks to our year-round issue campaigning, MoveOn members who skipped voting in 2024 have been inspired to take action—signing petitions, making calls to Congress, attending No Kings protests, and more.
Now, the next step is to make sure they go out and vote this November. Because they are literally the voters who will make the difference between winning and losing.
Will you donate $5 a month to our data-driven program that is laser-focused on the exact voters who will make the difference this November? We have less than 23 weeks to get the job done.
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
Reuel, our task this November is not merely to win. We must win by the biggest margin possible, to send a message to Trump, his cronies, and his Republican allies that their moment of unchecked power and of rigging maps to try to silence us is over, and that we the people are here to rein them in.
And we must also win enough races, and by a huge margin in each race, so there’s no way MAGA can get away with their dirty schemes to try and overturn the results.
MAGA is counting on us to be demoralized. To be divided. To repeat 2024.
We’re not going to.
Can you chip in $5 a month and be part of the team that stops them?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
The power belongs to us. Let’s use it.
Thanks for all you do.

March For Our Lives Virtual Events

A generation of American youth has grown up practicing active shooter drills, knowing that in this country, safety is never a given. So, for the Met Gala this year, we decided to ask a different question: If fashion is art, shouldn’t it reflect the reality of the world we live in?
We partnered with designer Clarence Ruth of COTTE D’ARMES and Act 4 Artists to create The Bulletproof Dress, worn by the incredible Racquel Chevremont.
Our placement was entirely deliberate. While the crowds cheered for pure aesthetic escapism, Racquel stood as a powerful, elegant confrontation.
The gown’s striking red color wasn’t just a design choice, it was a deeply emotional tribute to the bloodshed inflicted by gun violence across America. The bodice was crafted in the exact shape of a bulletproof vest.
It was fashion as a declaration: a demand to protect our children!
If our message reached you, please donate $10 today to support our effort to create a better future for our children; one free of gun violence.
Guns remain the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States. It is a manmade pandemic completely orchestrated by a greedy gun lobby. Our kids deserve the exact same level of care, creativity, and structural protection that we invest in high-society celebrations.
Our Met Gala stunt was a beautiful reminder of what we can achieve when we demand a shift in perspective. We made the gown impossible to ignore. But a culture shift is only the first step, we have to back it up with legislative work on the ground.
We proved during our very first youth-led uprising that we can force accountability even under the toughest political climates, and we are ready to do it again. But we can’t keep up these massive cultural interventions and grassroots programs without you.
Thank you for standing with us, refusing to look away, and demanding a future where our kids are finally guaranteed the right to grow up safe.

On May 23rd, ABC news reporter Selina Wang was standing on the White House North Lawn, recording a quick video on her phone.
Then the peace was shattered.
“It sounded like dozens of gunshots,” she reported. “We were told to sprint to the press briefing room…”
Think about that for a second. The White House. Arguably, one of the most heavily fortified, secure buildings on the entire planet. And yet, gun violence found its way right to the front door.
It proves what youth organizers and survivors have been saying for years: Without a massive cultural and political shift, absolutely nowhere is safe. Not our schools, not our grocery stores, not our neighborhoods, and not even the president’s lawn.
We are living through a second Trump administration, and we already see the corporate gun lobby trying to roll back the progress we’ve fought so hard for. But we’re not giving up. MFOL was founded during Trump’s first term. We built a massive, youth-led, disruptive movement out of pure grief, and we won major victories then. We can and will do it again.
People are tired of just being angry. We want a breath of fresh air. We want to celebrate wins again. But to get there, we need real accountability from our leaders and a complete culture shift around guns in America.
We don’t have high-priced lobbyists to help us accomplish that, we have you.
Thank you for standing with us in this fight,

Can you join us as an official member today to be a part of that work?

It takes a lot of people power to stop oil wars and rigged elections and win affordable healthcare and racial justice. Individuals acting alone will not be enough– to organize means to move as a collective and build enough power that we cannot be ignored.
One way we do this is by joining an organization. Think of all the movements for change you admire. At the heart of them all, there were organizations working together to win a shared agenda.
This week at SURJ, it’s our National Membership Drive, and we’re asking you to join our organization. This means chipping in with monthly dues and your time and skills to help power the work of SURJ. We are proud to be a social movement organization that is leading and a part of nearly every national social justice coalition fighting against authoritarianism right now.
We are proud to carry on the legacy of anti-racist white organizations before us that took on the responsibility of organizing our own against racism.
Make it “official” and join SURJ as a National Member today.
In solidarity,
SURJ

There are now over 3,000 May Day actions in all 50 states. School districts across the country are shutting down on May 1 because teachers and students are planning walk outs. Actions against major corporations, teach-ins about the war in Iran, and small-town street corner protests are coming together in a coordinated action to demand: workers over billionaires.
Check out the May Day map below to find an action near you. And don’t forget to sign the pledge to commit to a day of no work, school, or shopping.
And then register for the final May Day mass call tomorrow, April 29, at 8 pm ET featuring one of SURJ’s own members alongside Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO and other partner organizations across the country who will ground us in this historic moment and the importance of taking action this May Day.
White communities have a track record of being recruited by those at the top to reject solidarity with working class people of color and instead choose whiteness. And— we also have a powerful legacy of anti-racist white workers who refused to be divided by racism. Who stood together in the face of impossible odds.
This May Day, we’re claiming that legacy as our own. See you Friday!

Last night, Leaders We Deserve-endorsed candidates Christian Menefee and Julio Salinas won their elections in Texas. Congrats, Christian and Julio!
Voters in HD-41 knew exactly what was at stake in Julio’s race. They looked at their options — a wealthy, establishment-backed Democrat who is part of the same broken politics that has held the Rio Grande Valley back for decades — and Julio, a 26-year-old, fearless leader who was raised in this community and has spent his entire career fighting for the people who built it.
They chose Julio. And now the working people of the Rio Grande Valley will finally have a fighter representing them in Austin. That’s why the work we do in primary races is so important. With your grassroots support, we were able to ensure the Democratic nomination in a critical state like Texas was won by Julio, a true progressive voice, and not his establishment-pick opponent, who spent years voting with Republicans and attending Tea Party events.
And in TX-18, Christian Menefee is headed back to Congress to continue being a fearless fighter for his district. Christian has spent years taking on Trump and his allies in court — and winning. He’s been a powerful check on this administration’s lawlessness, pushed back against their attacks on immigrant communities, and stood up to Greg Abbott’s corrupt political machine. Now he’s going back to Congress to keep fighting and delivering for the people of Houston.
Julio & Christian mark our 10th and 11th wins this cycle — and I couldn’t be prouder of the impact we’ve been able to have in these races and across the country, because of your support.
It’s wins like these that prove something I know keeps the establishment up at night: you can’t fool voters by being a Democrat in name only. Earning voters’ trust and winning elections means being a leader that does more than just talk. It means showing up for your community, getting in the ring to fight for them, and having the courage to take on the corporations and special interests that are making life harder for working people.
That’s Julio and Christian — exactly the kind of leaders this movement was built to back. We’re deeply proud to have endorsed them this cycle, and there’s so much more to come. More leaders to back, and more races to win. This momentum is real, and with your support, we’re going to keep fighting, keep building, and keep winning.
Thank you,
David Hogg

We’re shifting the focus from outrage to action, and building the blueprint for a democracy that truly works for the people it serves.

We Are the Ones We’ve Been Waiting For

By Jake Orlowitz, Founder and CEO
Democracies rarely collapse in spectacle. They corrode.
Institutions stall. Cynicism deepens. People adapt to dysfunction and call it normal.
We say, “No.”
Instead of giving in and handing our country over to bad or incompetent actors, we need to become pragmatically progressive.
This is not about a political party; we have no party affiliations. It begins instead with moral seriousness, a fundamental approach to civic life that prioritizes people. Human life matters. Preventable suffering matters. Flourishing matters. Healthcare, housing, wages, climate stability, and democratic integrity – these all matter.
These are not abstract concepts. They are real-life conditions that determine whether a parent skips a prescription, whether a child breathes clean air, or whether a worker survives a layoff without collapse.
We are volunteers with Project 2029, and we are building toward that stronger, kinder, more prosperous future. Progressives who lean this way have often been ahead of other voters. But we can form coalitions that include people who may not call themselves progressive but still want fairness, security, and a government that functions. We can work toward outcomes that make sense to all of us: Are more people insured? Are wages rising? Are emissions falling? Are institutions functioning? Are families more secure?
If all this resonates with you, please read this newsletter and get more acquainted with our grassroots community. Check out the specific policy recommendations posted on our website, too.
These are sustainable plans that a new federal administration can enact right away. I hope you are eager to see them; they’re about immigration, housing, and the popular vote.
You’ll notice an article in this letter on our approach to healthcare. We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Our teams are working diligently on other critical policy ideas, too. Will you get behind them? Challenge political candidates you may meet to adopt these pragmatic ideas?
If we want lasting change, this is the work. Come join us.

Our Stance on Healthcare
Americans have made it clear that we need better healthcare at affordable costs and with greater efficiency for the good of all.
We can achieve these aims through the active cooperation of the federal and state governments, health professionals, non-governmental organizations, and individual Americans. When we collaborate in smart ways – while removing financial barriers and practical obstacles to proper care – we will emerge as a stronger and more prosperous nation.
Our policy relies on accepting these common-sense fundamental ideas:
- Americans need a system of health services that protects against disease and promotes the physical and mental health of the individual – the whole person.
- Policies should encourage individual choices about nutrition, exercise, and substance use that favor fitness, build strength and resilience, and guard against chronic illness over the course of a lifetime.
- It takes broad action from multiple segments of society to work against social, environmental, and occupational causes of disease and disability.
- Investing in sound research is essential to finding the scientific answers doctors need, and supporting reliable preventative care with patient health education will improve daily life across all demographic groups.
When America pursues these ideas, we will have a society with reduced illness, fewer hospitalizations, and lower overall costs.

Hurting from the Cost
By Alice Bond | Project 2029 Contributor
In 1950, the average American paid roughly $84 per person, per year for healthcare, according to a Social Security Administration report. Or they just didn’t go to a doctor.
By 2000, a half a century later, the typical American averaged $6,649 per year in health expenditures.
In 2024, only a quarter of a century later, the total healthcare bill is projected to nearly triple, reaching $15,610 per person, per year. Those accelerating numbers include out-of-pocket, government, and insurance costs.
You’ll also be interested to know that $100 in 1950 is equivalent in buying power to about $1,350 today, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The high dollar amounts we encounter in healthcare is one distinct barrier to care.
Many Americans lose access simply because they can’t afford care. Millions lost access this January due to expiring subsidies for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and cuts to Medicaid. Republicans voted against extending COVID-era healthcare subsidies and funding Medicaid.
The very real fallout of this political vote could impact 20 million American lives, resulting in premium payments that have more than doubled. People will pay exorbitant rate hikes or shop for inferior coverage.
An estimated 5 million will go without. A devastating result.
Instead, Project 2029 has some innovative, practical and proactive suggestions, the kind of healthcare planning and policy that Americans desperately need now.
Take a look and see if you don’t feel better. Then tell any candidates for office you encounter to prescribe our ideas.

Honoring Transgender Day of Visibility
Over 2.8 million adults and youth identify as transgender in the United States, according to the Williams Institute at University of California at Los Angeles School of Law.
They are your parents, your grocery checkers, your coworkers, bosses, neighbors and friends. And they come in all colors and from all walks of life.
So today, March 31st, we celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility — known as TDOV. Founded in 2009 by Michigan psychotherapist Rachel Crandall-Crocker (she/her), TDOV brings awareness to trans lives, highlights their joy and accomplishments, and honors trans elders.
Trans rights are human rights. Project 2029 is building a plan of action for a future that is strong, kind, and focused on human flourishing.

If you want to know and better understand the journey of trans visibility, we’ve compiled a list of three handpicked books you’ll want to check out! Read the full blog to learn more.

“Civic Power” Report: Organizing Is How We Win Elections and Pass Bold Policies
