Tri-City Democrats

Tri-City Democrats – Friday, February 13, 6:00 PM
Greetings fellow Democrats!
This month we’ll meet at the round Table Pizza on Court Street in Pasco. February 13 at 6pm. Come gather with like-minded folks and share some fellowship, food and beverages. As is our normal practice, Tri-City Democrats will order several pizzas to share. We’ll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group. Some of our generous members are likely to purchase pitchers of beer to share. If you want the salad bar or soft drinks, you are on your own for those items.
At this writing, we do not have a planned program, but we will have ‘Hate Has no Home Here’ signs available. We will also briefly discuss our budget for 2026.

COMMUNITY ARTS ORGANIZATIONS:
Why They Matter to All of Us
Thursday February 26 | Noon
Arts organizations are fundamental to the vitality of communities. These groups contribute immensely by fostering social cohesion, supporting economic development, and improving a community’s overall well-being.
Through their activities and programs, arts organizations bring people together, encourage stronger social connections, and help cultivate a sense of shared identity among residents. Despite their many contributions, arts organizations are currently facing substantial financial challenges.
To examine these issues, the February Badger Club Forum will examine the status and challenges of funding the arts in the Tri-Cities. The event will feature a panel of representatives from various segments of the community, including those involved in community development and members from arts organizations.
If you are with us in person at the Richland Library or online, we’ll be happy to see you. Please visit our website to register.

Today we…
Support new arrivals through education, relationships and community so they can thrive in their new home.
In the future, we will…
Create a community of open hearts, helping hands and supportive systems where strangers become friends and we all thrive.
The message below was published as an opinion piece in the Tri-City Herald recently. It’s not the message you might expect to read at holiday time, but reminds us that ‘peace on earth, goodwill toward men’ is a calling for all of us today. We’re sharing the article through B5 social media with gratitude for the many people in our community who do that daily and have joined with us to welcome the stranger.
For over 15 years I’ve had the privilege of working alongside the refugee community here in the Tri-Cities. Through the nonprofit we now call B5, I’ve helped people from all over the world learn English and make a new home here. Recently, more and more people have been asking me how the refugees in the B5 community are doing. I sense that, beneath this question, they’re really asking: Are they afraid? Do they feel safe?
What might they be afraid of? Are they worried about losing their greencards? About being sent back to a place where their lives were in danger? Or perhaps they fear being taken by ICE and deported to a country where they don’t belong? Or is it something closer to home, like fear of their neighbors, because their neighbors are being encouraged to see them as the enemy?

For months now, I’ve stayed silent. But how can I remain quiet when the policies and rhetoric from the highest office in the land are encouraging us to collectively blame and punish refugees and immigrants for the regrettable and unlawful actions of a few? This tactic is nothing new—it’s been used throughout history, most recently during the Holocaust. When our leaders frame refugees and immigrants as dangerous people to be feared, they justify removing them, claiming it’s for the sake of safety. They are disregarding the contribution that some of these people made to American safety. The Afghans who came to our country when we pulled out of Kabul supported our efforts against the Taliban. To leave them behind would put their lives in danger. It’s important to remember that refugees undergo the most rigorous vetting procedures of any individuals entering the United States. This vetting process is also being applied to those who came as parolees from Afghanistan.

The truth is the newcomers in our community aren’t voicing any unusual concerns to us. That doesn’t mean they have none, but living in fear and uncertainty is something they’re all too familiar with. It’s safety and stability that are new to them. So, here at B5, we are afraid for them. We’re afraid that they will lose their right to live here, yes. But we’re also afraid that their neighbors will stop treating them with kindness. We wonder if we should protect our friends. It might be safer for them if we keep quiet. One friend of B5 suggested that it might be better if we removed all the stories and references to our friends from certain targeted countries, so yesterday I asked one Afghan father if he would like us to do that. Would he feel safer if our social media didn’t have stories about the wonderful things his children were doing? He didn’t think that was necessary, because he doesn’t think people will hold him responsible for the actions of one bad man. I hope he’s right.
Years ago, Martin Luther King envisioned a country where people would not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. We’re still a long way from achieving that vision, but it’s a worthy one.

B5 was founded on the belief that those of us born in this country have an opportunity and privilege to bless these newcomers by walking alongside them, advocating for them, and welcoming them into our community. This contributes to their successful integration, growing their commitment to shared American values. We’ve seen firsthand how strangers can become friends when we embrace them with compassion and respect. I’m incredibly grateful for the many people in the Tri-Cities who’ve joined us in this mission. Together, we’ve turned the act of welcoming into a shared experience that benefits us all. My hope for the Tri-Cities in this season where so many are sowing seeds of hate and division is that we embrace the B5 mission of welcoming the stranger.

Thank you to all of you who give your time and money, so refugees and immigrants can find welcome at the doors of B5. Your donation in any amount allows us to support our programs to help newly arrived refugees THRIVE in our community. Will you join us?

This February is the 100th anniversary of the start of Black History Month – let’s use it to educate ourselves! Reimagined News is once again putting out daily emails featuring moments, people and movements that are too often ignored – let’s read their entry on community defense against fugitive slave lawsand subscribe for more here
The House has passed the government funding bill and the continuing resolution for Homeland Security appropriations and sent it to Trump’s desk, ending the partial shutdown. We now have nine days to force meaningful change on Trump’s secret police.
It will be a challenge. Designing limits the Trump regime will actually be bound by is a legislative nightmare, and as Pablo Manríquez has emphasized ICE has a $75 billion slush fund to work off regardless thanks to the MAGA murder budget. But there have been some heartening signs of spine, with multiple Democratic senators suggesting they won’t support another stopgap.
☎️ Let’s keep up the pressure – we can find call scripts here focused on taking on the slush fund and send this email with a full list of demands by texting SIGN PMMWLV to 50409, and join Common Cause in phonebanking into key states TOMORROW from 5:30-7:30PM ET. ☎️

FAQ from A Better Richland
Richland registered voters will vote this November to update the Richland City Council election process to be like the rest of Washington’s First-Class Cities, Pasco, and Kennewick.
Currently all seven members of the Richland council are elected “at-large.” They can live anywhere in the city. A vote to change the city charter would mean five council members would have to be elected from the districts where they live and two would still be elected “at-large”. Each of the five proposed districts would have approximately 12,000 residents. An interactive map on our website can show you in which district you would live.

Your senators need to hear from you! Members of Congress will be holding a hearing this week on child care — so let’s make it loud and clear that families need easier and more affordable access to child care, NOT harmful freezes!
Tell your member of Congress to act IMMEDIATELY to restore and protect child care funding.
What is happening?
The Trump administration drastically and abruptly undercut access to child care for over half a million children in five states. This disastrous action was prompted by a right-wing influencer’s skewed video trying to “prove” unfounded allegations of fraud by attempting to gain unauthorized access to a number of Minnesota child care centers. Now, Republicans in the Senate are further relying on this weaponized footage to hold a Child Care “Fraud” Hearing which, in reality, is less about proving fraud and more about advancing their anti-family, anti-immigrant, pro-billionaire agenda.
We all know that fraud is, of course, never okay, but empowering and relying on right-wing social media influencers to do the work of government investigations is not the answer to the national child care crisis. Nor do any parents want creepy men demanding entry into their children’s child care centers and taking videos of their children. [1]
Yet despite opposition from parents, federal child care funds were not only frozen in the entire state of Minnesota, but also in California, Colorado, Illinois, and New York — cutting more than $10 billion in child care and family programs completely unrelated to these allegations, throwing the fate of families’ budgets and livelihoods into chaos. [2] Though a federal judge has temporarily blocked the freeze, programs and families are mired in uncertainty when it comes to the immediate and long-term future of their access to care. [3]
Freezing critical child care funds for hundreds of thousands of children and targeting immigrants in our communities, who are a critical part of the care workforce, does not make the lives of families any easier or more affordable. In fact, it does the opposite – it makes access to quality, affordable child care much harder.
Urge Congress to immediately have child care funding restored and protected!
We won’t be silent as child care continues to be under attack. Thank you for raising your voice!

Friend, we’ve got a problem.
The FBI raided a Georgia elections center. [1] The President called on Republicans to take over and illegally have big government run your local elections. [2] Trump advisor Steve Bannon suggests ICE should be deployed to voting sites as we head toward midterm elections. [3] And this week Republicans in Congress are fast tracking the anti-voter SAVE Act 2.0 to steal our voting rights in broad daylight. This is not a drill. Democracy is on the line.
Tell Congress: protect our voting rights and REJECT the Save 2.0 Act.
As if 2026 hasn’t already been a year (yes, it’s only the beginning of February), and as if we had not already defeated the anti-voter SAVE Act last year, its evil spawn has sprung up like a nightmarish game of voting rights whack-a-mole. It’s like they really don’t want us to vote…
Here’s the deal – Republicans are resurrecting this bill that will restrict eligible American voters in order to keep people from voting. The SAVE Act would require all eligible Americans to provide proof of citizenship by presenting a passport or birth certificate when registering to vote. 21 million Americans lack easy access to those documents and roughly half do not have passports. This would have a disproportionate impact on women, who often change their names when they get married or divorced. [4] And in states like West Virginia, Mississippi, and Alabama, over 70% of citizens don’t have a passport. That is A LOT of voter suppression.
Don’t let the clever branding fool you. The “SAVE” Act 2.0 is ironically named because it would disenfranchise Americans of all ages, races, and backgrounds. The SAVE Act, in all of its forms, does nothing to make elections safer, but they do make it much harder to exercise your right to vote. Especially if you’re a woman, a person of color, or a young voter.
Are you one of the nearly 69 million married women in the US who changed your name when you married? Is your married name on your birth certificate? No? Then you won’t be able to use that to register to vote.
The SAVE Act penalizes women, making it significantly harder for them to register to vote. Further, the bill does not provide a clear way for women to prove their citizenship without a passport, which would leave many women without a way to register or cast their ballots. Married women who have changed their last name would also have to change their birth certificate, at significant cost and time, to meet the new voter requirements. This bill would impact working moms and those who simply cannot afford the expensive paperwork to prove they are eligible to vote.
This is straight up voter suppression cosplaying as Captain America. There is nothing, and we mean NOTHING, American in this bill. No attack on our democracy can be tolerated. Tell Congress to vote NO on this anti-American trash bill.
Together, we can make sure our right to vote stays intact,
Lauren, Nina, Donna, and the entire MomsRising and MamásConPoder Team
P.S.– Personal experiences are powerful and can make a HUGE difference in helping elected leaders understand how public policies impact families so they can move change. We want to hear more from YOU! Can you take a second and follow the link below to share your personal story about how passage of the SAVE Act would impact you and your family?

[Español Abajo]
The 2026 Washington State Legislative Session is here, and this week there are hearings on 14 key bills that we are supporting on our policy platform—which means you have 14 opportunities to take action!
Here’s how you can help right now, from wherever you are: You can submit written testimony in support of any of these bills up to 24 hours after their hearing.
Here are a few of the most urgent bills being heard this week:
Driver Privacy Act (SB 6002/HB 2332) – Testimony deadline: Wednesday 01/21 @ 8:00 AM — Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) are being used across Washington without clear limits, putting at risk immigrant communities, people seeking reproductive or gender-affirming care, and anyone else who may become a target of the federal government. This bill would create regulations for which public agencies can use ALPRs, how long they can retain the data, and who can access that data.
Secure and Accountable Federal Enforcement (SAFE) Act (SB 5906) – Testimony deadline: Wednesday 01/21 @ 8:00 AM — Right now, many members of our communities avoid sending their kids to school, going to the doctor, or accessing other public services and institutions due to fear that their data will be shared or that rogue federal agents will show up. This bill would set limits on the collection and sharing of information and create protocols on how institutions can respond to immigration enforcement to protect our personal privacy and give our communities the confidence that they can trust public institutions and feel secure in accessing essential services.
Domestic Workers Bill of Rights (SB 6053/HB 2355) – Testimony deadline: Wednesday 01/21 @10:30 AM — The people who care for our homes and loved ones should be treated with the same dignity and fairness as every other worker in Washington. This bill would ensure that domestic workers have basic workplace rights such as wage and hour standards, sick time, and protection from discrimination and retaliation.
Shelter, Not Penalties Act (HB 2489) – Testimony deadline: Wednesday 01/21 @ 4:00 PM — People experiencing homelessness need support, not punishment. This bill would prohibit local laws that punish people for engaging in life-sustaining activities like sitting, sleeping, or protecting themselves from the elements when there isn’t enough shelter available, making it easier for them to survive and get connected to the housing, shelter and services they need.
Every day and every action counts to show our elected leaders that our communities are paying attention and support these critical policy proposals that could make a real, tangible difference for our communities.
Let’s keep the pressure up and remind everyone in Olympia that immigrant justice is non-negotiable.
In community,
The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network

After the Weekend — Notes and Reflections from the Class of 2026
The first of the series of notes and reflections from the Class of 2026 is brought to you by Xavier Ajeto and Manousos Jacobsen:
Day 1: “The start of day one felt like a college syllabus day; my highlights were the introductions and getting to know everyone. The pace picked up significantly after lunch as we heard from Eric Liu on citizenship and institutions, Wil Johnson on equity, and Ken Workman on tribal affairs. We gained new perspectives on the challenges facing our country and left with a shared sense of civic responsibility and optimism about our role in the solution.”
Day 2: “Day two of our fellowship took us deep into the mechanisms of power. We dug into the weeds, breaking down progressive tax revenue and mapping out how institutional structures shape what’s possible in political organizing and government. We met with the founder Lisa Witter and reflected on the WAIDF’s mission to elevate young people in democratic politics. A highlight of the day was hearing from Seattle Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck, who shared candid insights on running for office and turning progressive values into real policy wins. Our takeaway: meaningful change requires both vision and fluency in the systems that govern us. This is the work that our cohort will continue to build on in the months ahead.”

Thank you for helping meet the needs!
Thanks to your generosity, we were able to meet all of the initial financial assistance requests of the Class of 2026.
One of the most critical aspects of the program is ensuring access and affordability for all fellows throughout the programming year. From mileage for fellows traveling across the state to ensuring everyone can afford lunch, a contribution, whether it’s $5, $25, $250, or $5,000, helps ensure that every fellow in this program can participate fully. Your contribution keeps our tuition low, offsets travel, and opens doors for leaders who might otherwise be shut out of the full experience.
Every dollar helps us live our values: that leadership shouldn’t depend on your income.

Interested in joining the board of directors or board of advisors?
As WAIDF approaches our 30th anniversary in 2028, we’re growing — and we want you to be part of it.
We’re recruiting passionate individuals for two leadership opportunities: our Board of Directors and our newly established Board of Advisors.
Board of Directors
Ready to roll up your sleeves? Our working board is where your voice, expertise, and energy directly shape the next generation of progressive leaders. Directors collaborate to guide strategy, oversee our signature fellowship program, and build the pipeline of leaders Washington needs. We’re seeking problem-solvers with skills in governance, finance, communications, technology, fundraising, or program development. One position we are trying to fill is the Treasurer role. If you have a financial background or are willing to step into the role and learn the ins and outs of being a Treasurer, we’d love to hear from you!
Board of Advisors
Prefer to lend your expertise without the time demands of a governing board? Our first-ever Board of Advisors will serve as strategic thought partners for the road ahead. We’re seeking seasoned professionals who can offer guidance through quarterly meetings and flexible engagement.
Both roles offer the chance to make a lasting impact on progressive leadership development in Washington and beyond.

As fellows, staff, and board members travel the state on a tight budget, we rely on our amazing alumni, partners, and friends to help make this program accessible and welcoming.
That might be opening your home, sharing a meal, or hosting a casual gathering after a long day of learning. These are often the moments when connections deepen, and the WAIDF community truly shines.
We’d love to know if you’re interested in:
- Hosting one or more fellows in your home, and/or
- Hosting or co-hosting a relaxed Friday or Saturday evening reception
If you’re interested or want to learn more, please fill out the Program Hosting & Reception Interest Form below.

There’s a lot of talk about “centrism” in politics — but what is “the center” really about? Is it about splitting the difference between the far-right and far-left? Or is it about standing for things that are broadly popular and broadly beneficial?
Centrism can mean a lot of different things, but as Civic Action founder Nick Hanauer argues in The New Republic, the neoliberal centrism that has long dominated our politics is fundamentally about balancing the interests of the very wealthy with the interests of everyone else.
The neoliberal centrism of splitting differences is how you end up with a federal minimum wage stagnant at $7.25 for 15 years — it’s right in the center of the $0 that wealthy extremists want, and the $15/hour that’s overwhelmingly popular.
That’s not centrism, that’s defending the status quo.
But there’s also another kind of center — a majoritarian center that’s focused on centering the interests of the majority of people. It’s not about splitting differences — it’s about pursuing policies that are broadly popular and broadly beneficial.
That’s what true majoritarian centrism is about. It’s the neoliberal center that’s actually extreme.
Check out Nick’s piece, share it with friends & family, and let us know what you think.

We are at a critical juncture in Olympia, with Safe Storage (HB 1152) currently sitting in the House Rules Committee. With the “House of Origin” floor cutoff just days away on February 17, the window to move this bill to a full vote is closing fast.
As our CEO Renée Hopkins shared in her recent op-ed in The Spokesman-Review, safe storage isn’t about politics or identity, it’s a practical, life-saving step. Reflecting on the 30th anniversary of the tragedy that took her brother Arnie’s life, Renée reminded us that “safe storage is one of the clearest lines we can draw between risk and prevention.”
Firearms remain the leading cause of death for children and teens in Washington. Most of these tragedies involve a firearm accessed at home or in a vehicle. HB 1152 sets clear, common-sense standards for secure storage that reflect what responsible firearm owners already practice.
By passing HB 1152, we can prevent unintentional shootings, reduce youth suicide, and stop stolen guns from fueling crime in our communities. But we can only do it if the House leadership hears from you today.
Thank you for standing with us.
In solidarity,
The Alliance for Gun Responsibility team
ALLIANCE FOR GUN RESPONSIBILITY
P.O. Box 4187 Seattle, WA 98194

HUGE WIN!
HB 2320 just cleared its first major hurdle.
Now let’s get it to the finish line.
The House Civil Rights & Judiciary Committee just voted to move HB 2320 out of executive session! This is a massive step forward in our fight to regulate untraceable, 3D-printed firearms and hold manufacturers accountable.
But the work isn’t done yet. For this bill to become law, it needs to be pulled to the House floor for a full vote. The gun lobby is already working overtime to stall this progress and we need to make sure our representatives hear from us louder than they hear from them.
Can you take 30 seconds to thank the committee members and urge House leadership to bring HB 2320 to the floor for a YES vote?
Sincerely,
Mike McIntyre
Director of Government Affairs

We’re coming together to tell lawmakers: No more cuts, tax the super-rich! Join us in Olympia on Tuesday, February 10 for a Millionaires Tax Rally with activists from across the state.
The Millionaires Tax (SB 6346) would bring in more than $3 billion per year to fund education, health care, and other crucial services that Washingtonians rely on – just by taxing the wealthiest 0.2%. SB 6346 could be moving to the Senate floor as soon as this week – so join us tomorrow in Olympia to make our voices heard!
Millionaires Tax Rally
Join members of SEIU, WEA, WFSE and more activists from across the state on February 10 to pass a Millionaires Tax in Washington. RSVP to let us know you’ll be there!
Date: Tuesday, February 10, 2026
Time: 11:30am – 1pm
Location: Capitol Steps, Olympia
This bill is a huge step forward for tax justice in our state, and now is the time to act. RSVP now and invite your friends to join us!

This Friday at 1:30pm is the Senate hearing date for the Millionaires Tax bill (SB 6346). Together, we are showing our State Senators widespread public support for this tax on mega-millionaires to fund education and healthcare!
No more searching around to find the right link and the right bill to sign in PRO on SB 6346. We’ve created one form for you, saving you time. It only takes a few moments – add your name now!
Key points about SB 6346:
- The Millionaires Tax will only apply to people who receive more than $1 million each year. That means only the SUPER wealthy (the top 0.2%) will be impacted, but we’ll all see the benefits.
- Right now, our tax code doesn’t allow state revenue to grow with the economy. Implementing the Millionaires Tax would provide the state with a more stable base of revenue, AND make the wealthiest in our state pay what they owe.
- This policy is popular across the board, with a poll showing that majorities of voters across political parties support it!
- More than $3 billion per year will go to schools, hospitals, childcare, and so much more.
Right now, our ask is simple: Will you take action today to show lawmakers that WA needs the Millionaires Tax?
Thank you for taking action, and I hope to see you at our rally on the Capitol Steps on February 10th!
In solidarity,
Ben Chapman

As we feared, this year has already been filled with stories and headlines from across the country documenting the death of people detained in immigration custody, with one of them being ruled a homicide by medical examiners; and of heightened violence against our communities, including two U.S. citizens shot to death by masked ICE agents for exercising their constitutional right to observe and document. Each day, hundreds of immigrant community members of all ages (toddlers included) are continuing to face arrests, detention, and forced separation from their loved ones and communities at the hands of federal agents who are increasing their enforcement tactics. Just law week, local public schools in the Seattle area issued shelter-in-place orders out of an abundance of caution, demonstrating the level of fear our communities are living in.
We recently learned of an internal memorandum to immigration agents wherein the Department of Homeland Security’s leadership claims that an administrative warrant is sufficient to enter a person’s home without their consent to arrest noncitizens with final deportation orders. This flies in the face of established law under the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution against unreasonable searches and seizures. We have the highest expectation of privacy in our homes and remind ourselves that entry into a private residence or any restricted area requires either a judicial warrant or consent.
For the past year, NWIRP and our partners have been preparing in the event of a significant increase in ICE presence in Washington State. We have been careful about how we talk about this threat because we do not want to cause unnecessary fear during a time when so many of our community members are already overwhelmed. But we have a duty to our community to be prepared. Our staff and volunteers are ready to respond immediately to large-scale enforcement action by ICE and other federal agents to protect the rights of those who are targeted, and our legal team continues to provide legal services for people facing deportation proceedings and those detained in immigration custody. If you are a member of the legal community, you can join our legal response team here.
It is a truly dark time. But our communities are strong. Thank you for your continued support – it is needed now more than ever.

Litigation Updates
Next Tuesday, NWIRP and our partners at National Immigration LItigation Alliance and Human Rights Watch, will present arguments to the First Circuit Court of Appeals in D.V.D. v. DHS, in Boston, Massachusetts, in support of the district court’s prior order granting preliminary injunctive relief to ensure that our clients are not removed to a third country at the whim of our government without first having the opportunity to apply for protection if they fear persecution or torture in that country. This is now before the First Circuit after the Supreme Court stayed the initial preliminary injunction issued by the district court. The decision covers a class of thousands of individuals who are now being threatened with removal to countries where they have had no prior contact, and often include countries in the middle of civil turmoil.
We continue to push forward on two separate class actions, Rodriguez Vazquez v. Bostock and Maldonado Bautista v. Noem, challenging the administration’s new draconian detention policies, denying bond hearings to persons who have lived in this country for years, some for decades. In addition, NWIRP continues to file habeas petitions each week on behalf of persons unlawfully detained in immigration custody in Tacoma. And each week the federal district courts are ruling in favor of our clients and ordering their release.
In the face of the dramatic increase in unlawful detention and the need for expedited habeas procedures, NWIRP successfully petitioned the Western District of Washington to modify its local court rules to ensure that persons who are unlawfully detained do not languish for months waiting for the federal court to issue a decision on a habeas petition. Next month, on February 5, 2026, NWIRP and the Western District of Washington, will provide training to attorneys in Washington and Oregon regarding the new rules governing habeas petitions challenging immigration detention. Attorneys can register for this training at this link.

Keeping Our Students and Schools Safe from ICE
This month, our community outreach team held two virtual training sessions focused on protecting students, families, teachers, and administrators when they encounter immigration agents. We encourage you to watch these training sessions and others, available here.
We encourage parents to have an emergency preparedness plan ready for their family. Last year, we recorded a training alongside our partners from Legal Council for Youth and Children (LCYC) which discusses how to prepare this plan.

The Yakima Herald says:
As devastating as [cutting Medicaid] would be for individuals, it also imperils critical basic funding for hospitals and nursing homes around the state.
“Hospitals will close in Washington state, in rural parts of our state and urban parts of our state,” Ferguson warned last month. “Take that to the bank. That’s going to happen. Nursing homes in our state will close.”
Newhouse is sticking to his story, though, falsely claiming that the Medicaid system is rife with fraud and waste, and that this bill merely cleans up the books and keeps benefits flowing for legitimate recipients.
But Newhouse is no fool. He chose his words carefully before he voted.
He may have promised not to directly cut Medicaid, but he knew full well that’s exactly what H.R. 1 would ultimately mean. Now he’s coldly trying to justify turning his back on the harm this heartless legislation will cause the 4th District.
That’s not just disappointing or dismaying. It’s disgraceful.
Rep. Newhouse can change his vote when this bill comes up again. We know that personal stories and experiences can powerfully persuade members of Congress. Can you share your reasons for opposing Medicaid cuts?
Thank you for all you do!
Sincerely,
Emilio Meraz-Rodriguez

The Washington Health Trust is back in the Senate
The 2025 legislative session has started, and it’s time to contact our elected officials! Once again, Senator Bob Hasegawa from Legislative District 11 has introduced the Washington Health Trust (WHT). We’re incredibly grateful for Senator Hasegawa’s advocacy on this critical issue, and now, it’s time for us to spring into action. We need co-sponsors to the bill ASAP. The deadline for co-sponsors is 5 PM today, so time is of the essence. See the Actions below.
We’re Spreading the Word!

Whole Washington volunteers, Board members, and our Executive Director were in Olympia on opening day, dropping off literature and making contact with office staff. It’s a bustling time in the capitol and a great opportunity for us to create some heat.
As Jim noted, we’re “taking our bill to our legislators before they’re even sworn in.” Thank you to all for your time, passion, and advocacy!
What are the chances for the WHT this year?
We’ve been advised Senate Bill 5233 will not receive a hearing this session. It’s our responsibility and obligation to not go silent. Our healthcare is much too important.
A hearing on comprehensive universal healthcare is more pressing than ever. Washington State has a massive budget shortfall (10 to 12 billion in the coming four years). Opportunites to save money need to be reviewed, and the WHT is just such an opportunity.
Both the Universal Health Care Commission Report and the 2021 Gerald Friedman analysis, show significant savings (anywhere from 738 million to 12 billion, depending on the model) while providing expanded benefits like vision, dental, and mental health services. We’d feel better and we’d save money. It’d be negligent to ignore a close review of the bill at this time.
What actions do we take right now?
There’s plenty we can do to press the WHT forward. Right now, these are the two big ones.
- Make Online Comments in support of the bill. Click on the top green button on the right that says Send a comment on this bill to your legislators. You’ll click the Support button and add your personal comments. Remember to send to your Senator plus both House Representative
- Contact your elected officials. This is the most vital action you can do today! Call or write them and let them know you support this Universal Healthcare bill. Ask your Senator to co-sponsor SB 5233 as soon as possible. Ask your Representatives to introduce a companion bill. Need help finding contact info? Use the District Finder here.
Reach out to Republicans and Independents too. Universal Healthcare is good for all of us!
Please reply back to this email if you make contact or leave a message. We’d love to hear what actions you’re taking and what you’re hearing from their offices.
Want to know more about the new WHT?
Join us tomorrow for the Virtual Town Hall! We’ll cover what’s different, share our stories, and plan together how to make the most of this moment!
Thank you so much for anything and everything you put in today to make some noise and increase the awareness for this legislation. This is not Whole Washington’s bill. It’s Washington’s bill. We can make our lives better. We just have to demand it.
In passionate and hopeful solidarity,
Whole Washington

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on laws in West Virginia and Idaho that restrict transgender girls from participating in school sports. Those laws are discriminatory and harmful, but what’s being proposed here in Washington is even worse.
A billionaire-backed initiative that will ultimately be on the general election ballot would require sex verification for any student who wants to play girls’ sports. That could mean invasive genital exams or costly genetic testing for girls as young as 11 just to join a school team. This is not speculation. The language is written directly into the initiative, and it is moving forward.
The timeline has now accelerated. Lawmakers, media, and voters are beginning to pay attention.
If you’re able, please contribute today to help us respond with urgency and strength. Early support allows us to counter misinformation, organize families statewide, and make sure decision-makers understand what this initiative would actually do to Washington’s kids.
This measure doesn’t just target transgender girls. It puts every girl at risk of invasive scrutiny. Unlike laws in other states, even those being argued before the Supreme Court, this initiative explicitly requires verification of a student’s reproductive anatomy, genetics, or hormone levels.
This is a dangerous escalation.
The initiative is funded by hedge fund mega-millionaire and bully Brian Heywood, who has already spent millions attempting to force this measure onto the ballot. National money and political ambition are driving this effort, not the safety or well-being of students.
We are already mobilizing, but we cannot meet this moment without resources. What happens next will shape Washington’s future and whether we allow fear and political ambition to override basic protections for children. Please donate today.
Thank you for standing with us when it matters most.
In solidarity,
WFF

Two initiatives are moving through the signature verification process as we speak. These initiatives would undermine student safety, strip protections from LGBTQ+ youth, and allow the government to interfere in deeply personal family decisions. Our opponents have turned in their signatures, and it looks like they have collected enough to advance these measures. With this step complete, they’re headed into the next stage: either legislative action or a direct vote of the people.
That makes this moment decisive.
We need your help. Please contribute today to Washington Families for Freedom so we can respond with full strength. Early resources make a difference because this is when misinformation spreads quickly, and momentum can either be contained or gain ground.
This is a critical moment. We believe every student deserves to be safe, respected, and supported at school, no matter who they are or where they come from. These initiatives threaten that promise. They would:
- Force educators to disclose sensitive information about students, even when it could put a young person at risk
- Limit access to trusted adults and school-based support services
- Invite invasive and harmful scrutiny of girls’ bodies in school sports
These proposals don’t make students or schools safer. They create fear, stigma, and harm, especially for LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, and young people who already face instability at home. The campaign is already mobilizing, but we need to move fast. The window to shape the conversation and stop real damage is right now.
If you’re able, please contribute today to support this work. Your support helps us organize statewide advocacy and rapid response efforts, elevate the voices of families and students most affected, and defend inclusive, safe schools in the face of growing political attacks.
Every day matters in moments like this. The decisions made in the coming weeks will shape what kind of state Washington chooses to be. Thank you for standing with us and for believing that every child deserves dignity, privacy, and safety.
In solidarity,
Washington Families for Freedom
P.S. This fight is moving quickly. A contribution today helps ensure we can meet this moment with the urgency and strength it demands.

After an incredible summer of organizing together and building our capacity to fight authoritarianism into the future, join us for our final One Million Rising call this Wednesday, October 8, at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
Many of you have been taking part in our Signs of Solidarity, Ground Avelo, and other One Million Rising campaigns. Come hear more about how they’ve been going, how you can stay plugged in, and how they’ve evolved as you’ve been spreading strategic non-cooperation across the country.
The highlight of this call will be our launch of the Courage Collectives.
For One Million Rising, we talked about how the best way to fight authoritarianism isn’t by aiming at the top, but through addressing the pillars upholding the regime. Those pillars can be houses of faith, educational institutions, military branches, and any number of other organizations, societies, or groupings of people that hold community power. But we didn’t talk about how to organize to address these pillars.
Unlike your typical organizing model, pillars-based organizing may not be local. As an example, alumni of a university that is upholding the agenda of an authoritarian administration may be located across the country. Come learn how we’ll be organizing pillars-based communities with our Courage Collectives. **Bonus: We’ll also be giving a training on what power mapping is and how to connect it to your pillars-based organizing work.
After the October 8 call, One Million Rising will wind down as a freestanding program, and the infrastructure and campaigns will fold back into the No Kings movement, the new Courage Collectives, and other organizing paths we’ll share on the call. Join us this Wednesday to learn more.
Thank you for growing this movement with us,
The One Million Rising Team
P.S. If you haven’t registered for your local October 18 No Kings Day event yet, find an event near you on our event map. Indivisible Rural Program [2021 WORKING DOC]

Join Our Call December 3rd 5pm PST!
Dear Rural Indivisibles,
I’m writing with a quick reminder and warm invitation to join us for this month’s Rural Caucus Call. As we close out the year, we’re gathering to reflect on what our local groups have accomplished, connect those wins to our broader national priorities, and share an early look at what’s ahead for the caucus in 2026.
This call is also a space to ground ourselves before the year ends — to celebrate, listen, and prepare for the work and care we’ll need moving forward.
You’ll leave with a clear picture of the incredible work rural groups have led this year, how those efforts strengthen our national strategy, and what our early plans are for the caucus in 2026 — including ways you can plug in.
Our hope is that you leave feeling an even stronger sense of ownership in the Rural Caucus. We’ll uplift stories directly from local groups and include a listening segment with a short survey so your voice shapes where we go next.
Before the holidays begin, we want you to take something for yourself — so we’ll be inviting everyone to make a small self-care plan and commit to returning together in January, ready and renewed.
We truly hope you’ll join us for this closing conversation of 2025. Your presence continues to shape this caucus and the possibilities we’re building across red & rural communities.
Looking forward to being in community with each of you.
Warmly,
– The Indivisible Red and Rural Caucus Team

Join Our Call December 3rd 5pm PST!
Dear Rural Indivisibles,
It’s been a while! Since my departure as co-leader of the Rural Caucus in 2023, I’ve missed you all dearly. This is an incredibly dedicated and resilient community, and it’s about to get even more powerful.
Aftyn Behn, former group leader and co-founder of the Red and Rural Caucus, is running in a special election to flip Tennessee’s Seventh Congressional District. You may recall Aftyn from the first-ever rural caucus summit or from her leadership of inclusive and open rural calls. It’s indisputable that Aftyn’s efforts made a permanent mark on rural organizing at Indivisible. Now, it’s time to show her the same enthusiasm she gave us.
Flipping TN-07 won’t be an easy race to win–Trump won the district by 22 points in 2024. However, we saw races across the nation flip by that margin just two weeks ago. If anyone is up for the challenge, it’s Aftyn. In addition to her time with the Rural Caucus, Aftyn has served as a social worker and a state House Representative. She’s a fighter running to feed kids, fix roads, and fund hospitals. As a longtime activist, Aftyn understands the power of grassroots organizing.
Early voting in the race began on November 13th, and we have just two weeks until voting closes on Election Day (December 2nd). This is our only chance to flip a congressional seat in 2025, and we need your help. You can help get out the vote for Aftyn by:
Signing up for a phonebank. Dials into TN-07 start TOMORROW, and you can join from anywhere in the country! We will start every shift with a training, so first-time phonebankers are welcome!
Knocking doors with Neighbor2Neighbor. If you live in TN-07, take this opportunity to get outside and meet your neighbors! We will provide you with a list of ten like-minded neighbors, a script, and a printable flyer to leave behind.
Splitting a donation between Aftyn and Indivisible. What does Aftyn’s campaign have in common with Indivisible (aside from our shared love of grassroots organizing)? Neither of us are taking a dollar of corporate PAC money. If you are able, please help us power our GOTV efforts and get Aftyn over the finish line.
Want to learn more about Aftyn? Join the What’s the Plan call featuring Aftyn Behn, this Thursday, November 20, 2025.
Flipping this district won’t be easy, but rural organizers understand that the most impactful undertakings rarely are. Let’s harness the grassroots power of our caucus and send one of our own to Congress.
In solidarity,
Tricia Sauer
Rural Caucus Co-Founder

One Year In: Why Local Politics Matter More in a Post-Trump Era

So here’s where the New England team went wrong last night — kidding! We’re not talking about those field tactics. Although our CEO, Kelly Dietrich, says running for office is a lot like practicing before a big game.
That’s why we’re giving you a running start with Field Tactics 101!
Tomorrow, we’re covering:
- How field work translates to votes
- Strengths and weaknesses of multiple field tactics
- How to layer field tactics that work for you
The sooner you hit the field and actually do it right, the more voters will know your name. And usually, that all adds up to a big win.
So join us at 1 pm tomorrow — but save your (always) free seat today to guarantee your spot!
Warmly,
– Ada, Associate Director of Marketing and Communications, NDTC

And Then They
Came for Minneapolis…
And We Rose Up
What we are witnessing in Minneapolis will not stop there. A gang of federal agents, beholden not to the Constitution but to their autocrat in chief, gunned down two Minnesotans in broad daylight. This is how totalitarian control spreads: city by city, community by community, until the unthinkable becomes the norm.
As you see opportunities to protest pop up in the coming days, we encourage you to join acts of resistance in your community and to bring people with you. Now is the time to multiply our efforts. Be safe. But please do speak up, speak out, and be bold. It’s your right. If not now, then when?

Shelley Buck won her special election for Minnesota House 47A this week. With her victory, control of the Minnesota House is now split 67-67. Buck, a member of the Prairie Island Indian Community, is one of only four Native American legislators serving in the Minnesota legislature. When margins are this tight, every NDTC-trained candidate holding the line matters.

We’re Never Letting Trump’s Administration Off the Hook
A letter from NDTC
CEO Kelly Dietrich
Tom Homan — Trump’s latest “border czar,” who built his entire brand on being tough but is supposedly more professional — is now running the show in Minneapolis. This is the same man who took a $50,000 bag of cash from the FBI and said it wasn’t a bribe.
This is not victory. This is a costume change.
What’s On Our Newsfeeds 🗞️
Why this story matters:
The Olympics are supposed to showcase the best of America. Apparently, this administration thinks that includes ICE agents. Italy is already pushing back, and so must we.
Why this story matters:
Notice how the “law and order” crowd gets real quiet when federal agents kill people in broad daylight. People are in the streets because they refuse to look away. If marching isn’t your thing, running for office works too.

Imagine you spoke out against your government’s actions – and in response, federal agents investigated you and showed up at your doorstep to interrogate you.
That’s exactly what happened to our client, and it’s why we filed a court case to stop the government from demanding his address and other personal information as part of its campaign to intimidate critics.
Our client, Jon Doe, read a news article about government attempts to deport a man seeking asylum from Afghanistan, where he could be killed for having helped the United States government against the Taliban.
Appalled by the man’s treatment, Jon emailed the government’s lead attorney at a publicly available email address to politely express his disapproval – simply calling on the Department of Homeland Security to “apply principles of common sense and decency.”
Within hours, DHS had subpoenaed Google for information associated with Jon’s Gmail account, including his address, Social Security number, and driver’s license number. A few weeks later, federal agents came to his home asking questions about the email he had sent asking DHS to protect the asylum seeker.
This is an outrageous overreach. We have the right to criticize the government. Jon merely sent an email to a public official expressing dismay about the official’s conduct of his public duties. Nothing could be closer to what the First Amendment is designed to protect.
That’s why we asked the courts to throw out this subpoena.
The government’s actions are intended to intimidate our client, chill his speech, and punish him for dissent. We won’t let that happen.
From snatching students off the street because of their political views to detaining a journalist for livestreaming ICE raids to flooding our cities with masked federal agents, the Trump administration continues to use its mass deportation agenda as a blanket excuse to degrade our free speech rights.
What our client was put through is yet another example of this government’s blatant abuse of power.
We’ll keep you updated on this work – and always remember, you have the right to speak out.

Your pressure worked. Late last week, Congress blocked a bill that would’ve poured more money into ICE and Border Patrol without any strings attached.
This is a direct result of people across the nation demanding that our Senators vote no. ACLU supporters like you sent almost 300,000 messages to Congress demanding an end to ICE and Border Patrol’s attacks on our community and successfully flipped the votes needed to stop this bill in its tracks.
Congress is listening – but the work’s not over. ICE and Border Patrol continue to ask for blank checks to carry out abusive operations, and the Senate is working now to draft a new funding bill.
The Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda is causing violence and chaos. Federal agents have detained toddlers and children. They’ve shot and killed people in our streets. And they have the audacity to keep asking Congress for more and more money.
This victory in Congress is a major step towards ending the chaos and violence. But we can’t stop now. We’re using this momentum to demand concrete reforms, including:
- Ending the detention of toddlers and children, rampant racial profiling, warrantless arrests, indiscriminate stops, and roving patrols
- Enforcing actual accountability for abuse by immigration agents – including real limits on use of force and surveillance of protesters, as well as consequences for violent misconduct
- Mandating agents identify themselves, take off their masks, wear and use body cameras, and ensure that footage is available for investigations and accountability
We must stop ICE and Border Patrol’s attacks on our communities – and this recent win proves that public opinion is with us. Congress must continue listening to constituents across the country. Join us in urging your representatives to rein in ICE and Border Patrol’s abuse.
Together, we can get these violent, lawless operations out of our communities for good.

Across the country, Emerge alums are stepping up to hold ICE accountable — and they’re doing it from positions of power.
In Congress, Emerge alums Rep. Maxine Dexter (OR) and Rep. Yassamin Ansari (AZ) are pushing for accountability at the highest levels following violent ICE operations in their communities. In cities and states nationwide. Emerge alums are speaking out against what they see as unchecked federal overreach and the harm it is causing families.
And they aren’t stopping at statements.
In Maine, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows took action to prevent state resources from being used in ways that could enable unlawful law enforcement activity. In New Jersey, State Senator Britnee Timberlake is advancing legislation to strengthen trust between law enforcement and immigrant communities — drawing a clear line between local public safety and federal immigration raids.
This is what Emerge leadership looks like: bold, prepared women who use their offices at every level to protect communities, defend civil rights, and demand accountability.
But none of this happens by accident. It happens because Emerge recruits, trains, and supports Democratic women who are ready to lead in moments exactly like this.
If you believe we need more leaders willing to stand up to abuse of power and fight for families, chip in today to help us train the next wave of Emerge women.
Your support builds the bench. Your support puts courage into office. Your support makes this leadership possible.
Chip in now to power more women like Maxine, Yassamin, Shenna, and Britnee →

International Women’s Day will be a flashpoint — and we’re calling for a Brave Women Weekend of Action. On this call, we’ll bring you in on our big plans to take direct action against state-backed systems that protect abusers and terrorize women, from Epstein’s violence to ICE’s.
Bravery becomes power through collective action. Our movement exists to make sure no woman stands alone for telling the truth. Join the call. We need you in the streets with us.

Over the past two weeks, across the country, Winter Storm FERN snapped power lines, flooded homes, and left people in freezing darkness.
We are fighting ice in an ice storm with shovels, candles, neighbors, and grit. This is what resilience looks like when the state fails.
Kristi Noem failed to respond to this storm. She failed during last summer’s floods. Congress is cutting FEMA funding, slashing federal workers, and blocking emergency response, then feigning surprise when local disaster response collapses.
Women’s March is funded by the people. Our average donation is $25. That support builds mutual aid and rapid response where the government refuses to show up.
Right now, our friends at Organizing Resilience, an organization that supports groups on the ground after climate disasters, is responding to Winter Storm FERN. We are supporting their relief work. Can you chip in $15 today to help communities recover?

Dear MoveOn member,
On Thursday, Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune revealed exactly what he thinks of us. He dismissed Democrats’ demands to rein in ICE, claiming they only included them “to satisfy MoveOn or some of their left wing special interest groups.”1
He just gave us the perfect opening to prove him wrong—with your help. Here’s the situation:
Right now, Congress is deciding whether to hand Trump billions more dollars for his deportation machine—or finally rein in ICE. Funding for the Department of Homeland Security runs out on February 13. That gives us one week.
Democrats have real leverage to force a partial shutdown, and they’ve laid out their demands, including an end to warrantless arrests, protections for schools, churches, and hospitals, mandating ICE officers unmask, and independent investigations into ICE abuses.2
But they’ll hold the line only if they know we have their backs. Right-wing media is in full attack mode. And some Democrats are getting very nervous about standing firm.
If we can raise the money this weekend, we’ll launch mobile billboards early next week in Senator Thune’s backyard in South Dakota and in Washington, D.C., to make it crystal clear what Thune and his colleagues are refusing to support: keeping ICE out of schools and churches, requiring warrants for arrests, and stopping racial profiling.
Will you start a monthly donation of $5 to help us put up mobile billboards in South Dakota and D.C., while powering all of MoveOn’s urgent and ongoing organizing to pressure Democrats to hold the line and get ICE out of our neighborhoods?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
This is the moment when movements either break through or break apart. When the pressure gets intense, politicians look to see how closely people are still watching and how hard people will continue to fight.
We need to show them we’re not going anywhere.
Over the past two weeks alone, MoveOn members have forced the NFL to affirm that there will be no ICE enforcement operations at the Super Bowl.3 We’ve flooded congressional offices with calls and letters. We’ve put real and sustained pressure on Congress. More than 250 MoveOn members have already signed up to visit their representatives’ district offices next week to demand a NO vote on the Department of Homeland Security’s budget.
The American people are on our side—by huge margins.4
But public opinion matters only if we turn it into political pressure.
With your support, MoveOn will:
- Launch mobile billboards in South Dakota and Washington, D.C., to hold Thune and Senate Republicans accountable.
- Coordinate with allied organizations to organize district office visits demanding a NO vote on any more ICE funding.
- Keep coordinating protests and vigils across the country to keep ICE’s abuses in the spotlight.
- Amplify the pressure on every wavering member of Congress.
None of this happens without grassroots support. Every dollar you give directly funds the organizing that’s helping to stop ICE’s terror.
We have one week to make sure every Democrat in Congress knows their constituents expect them to hold firm. One week to prove that backing down will cost them more than standing strong. One week to show that this movement isn’t fading—it’s growing.
Republicans are betting Democrats will cave. Trump is counting on the pressure breaking us. And Thune thinks he can dismiss millions of people—MoveOn members like you—as irrelevant.
Not everyone can afford to give, but if you can, please chip in $5 a month to prove them all wrong—and urgently and steadfastly protect our neighbors and communities.
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
We’ve already shown what’s possible when we refuse to back down. Now let’s finish what we started and drive ICE out of our neighborhoods.
Thanks for all you do.
–Mia, Jaira, Aliya, Kelsey, and the rest of the team
P.S. The deadline is February 13—just one week away. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to give to help stop ICE’s terror, this is it. Donate $5 a month to help MoveOn put up billboards this weekend and then keep up the organizing, for as long as it takes.
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.

Dear MoveOn member,
This is what people power looks like.
More than 195,000 MoveOn members signed our petition demanding that the NFL stop ICE from targeting fans, workers, and communities at Super Bowl LX despite DHS Secretary Noem’s threats that ICE would be “all over” the event.1
And on Tuesday, we delivered those signatures to NFL HQ in Manhattan to demand accountability from one of the most powerful sports leagues in the world.
Just hours after our petition delivery and press conference, the NFL’s Chief of Security announced that there would be no ICE operations at the Super Bowl this Sunday.2
For months, the Trump administration had been openly threatening an ICE operation at the Super Bowl while the NFL remained silent. Meanwhile, we kept up the pressure on the NFL with aerial banners flying over playoff game stadiums, gathering petition signatures, and sending thousands of letters to the NFL demanding they do the right thing and speak out.
We know this fight isn’t over. MoveOn members and tens of millions of people will be watching closely this Sunday to make sure the NFL follows through on this commitment. And we won’t stop pushing until ICE’s violence ends and our communities are free from their terror.
Thank you for taking action and proving, once again, that when we refuse to back down, we can make real change.
Thanks for all you do.

March For Our Lives Virtual Events
In just one week, we’ll honor the eighth year-mark of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Just days later, we will also mark eight years since the founding of March For Our Lives, a movement born from grief and transformed into sustained action.
Eight years since 17 lives were taken and a generation rose up to demand change.
It’s shocking to think that eight years after the deadliest mass shooting at a high school in U.S. history, we’re still fighting for change. Despite passing the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act in Florida, which raised the minimum age to purchase a firearm in Florida from 18 to 21, we’re still facing challenges every day — and using our grief from February 14, 2018 to power policy change.
But our grief hasn’t ended gun violence, and lawmakers with deep ties to the gun lobby still block commonsense solutions.
Eight years after Parkland, the work to stand up to the gun lobby and demand change is still heartbreakingly necessary — and it is still driven by people who refuse to accept the status quo.
Your contribution right now helps turn grief into change — and keeps the hope that one day, more lives will not be lost to this epidemic.
Thank you.

As we observe Black History Month, we’re facing a hard truth — but also a hopeful one.

Gun violence in the United States is not random. For generations, it has been concentrated in Black communities that were denied opportunity through systemic racism, chronic underinvestment, and political decisions that left entire neighborhoods behind.
But this violence is not inevitable.
Across the country, Black leaders and community organizers are proving that when communities are trusted and resourced, lives can be saved. In cities like Chicago, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., focused violence intervention, mentorship, and community-led safety efforts are helping reduce shootings and homicides.
At the same time, the gun industry continues to profit from this crisis. Its marketing and political influence flood communities with more guns while blocking accountability, worsening harm in the places already hit hardest.
This is why March For Our Lives focuses on engaging young people and telling the full story of gun violence. We challenge the systems that profit from violence, and push for real solutions rooted in prevention, accountability, and care.
Thank you for standing with us,

Inspired by the people of Minneapolis, Americans are rising up across the country and putting serious cracks in ICE and the MAGA machine. A federal judge ordered the release of 5-year-old Liam Ramos with a scathing opinion, the Senate has blocked ICE funding, Target sales are down, Republicans are defecting– and an overwhelming majority of Americans disapprove of ICE’s violence.1
We are in a critical moment where we can use this momentum to defund ICE and deliver a massive blow to Trump’s racist agenda– if we keep organizing.
Millions of white people are ready to get into action to defend their neighbors– and they need training, support, and community to do it. Since the beginning of this year, SURJ has already trained thousands, and we’re just getting started.
Can you donate to SURJ today to help us take advantage of this moment?
In just the past month:
- Over 10,000 white people joined our mass calls to get trained to organize against ICE in their own communities.
- Three SURJ organizers answered a call to go to Minneapolis to support expanding parent organizing projects to protect schools in the Twin Cities from ICE, including many white parents escorting and driving non-white kids to and from school, ensuring the kids and their families are kept safe.
- Our members have made thousands of calls to senators, led actions against Hilton and Target and other corporations supporting ICE, and are getting trained to organize to lay the foundations to fight back against ICE in their local communities.
Our member Deb attended a training last week where she was one of 160 people who committed to hosting a potluck in their neighborhood to start organizing on a local level. She shared this:
I invited people over for donuts and coffee, and with their permission I made a map of our neighborhood with contact info for everyone. We’re getting to know each other beyond just our names and which houses we live in. I live in a small but diverse town with a large immigrant population and fear and threat have come to town already. And I know the only way to build a resilient community is through connection, relationships, and social trust. In my neighborhood and with my SURJ chapter, we’re gathering to do that.
Millions of white people are getting activated right now, and SURJ is moving them into action. None of this is possible without your support.
We need millions more white people all over the country to be trained and ready to show up in solidarity to kick ICE out of every town and city– and to put a halt to the billionaire agenda’s death march for all of us.
Can you give a gift today to help us keep meeting this moment?
In solidarity,
SURJ

I have some news that should make every congressional incumbent very, very nervous.
Every single Leaders We Deserve-endorsed candidate outraised their incumbent challengers in the fourth quarter of 2025. WITHOUT taking a dime of corporate PAC money.
Our candidates are showing the strength of younger leaders, people-powered politics, and fighting against the status quo.
The incumbents we’re challenging shouldn’t just be nervous. They should be terrified.
Here’s what is happening:
Justin J. Pearson (TN-09) raised $732,151
Rep. Steve Cohen raised $84,226
Nida Allam (NC-04) raised $334,740
Rep. Valerie Foushee raised $131,866
Donavan McKinney (MI-13) raised $217,044
Rep. Shri Thanedar raised $25,312
Patrick Roath (MA-08) raised $170,070
Rep. Stephen Lynch raised $104,595
These numbers aren’t flukes. They’re what happens when you put up candidates that actually inspire people. While the amounts raised this means little to people outside DC it’s damn near everything to people inside DC. It is very rare for incumbent challengers to be doing this much better than their opponents who have decades of connections and donors.
While we know these numbers are certainly not everything our candidates are taking nothing for granted. They’re hard at work knowing money alone isn’t enough to win. That’s why they are focused on organizing college students in their districts, knocking doors, doing down halls and more.
We’re challenging these incumbents because they’ve gotten too comfortable. Meanwhile, our candidates are showing up, organizing, and refusing to compromise their values.
We’re going to keep primarying candidates, keep holding complacent leaders accountable, and keep building a Democratic Party that actually deserves the power that voters give it.
Let’s keep this energy going.

A year ago, I was elected DNC Vice Chair.
I ran for this volunteer role for a very simple reason. After the election, I attended my first DNC Executive Committee meeting to hear what party leadership thought went wrong. A pollster presented on the loss, and the very first group she highlighted was 18–29-year-old voters.
I looked around a table of more than 30 committee members and didn’t see a single person under 30.
In that moment, I realized I could either keep complaining about institutions like the DNC or step in and try to be the change I — and so many people my age — wanted to see. After endless hours on the phone and a relentless campaign, I was elected at 24.
During my time as vice chair, one truth became impossible to ignore: for decades, we’ve claimed we have a messaging problem. In reality, we have a messenger problem.
To strengthen the party, we don’t need a new slogan — we need new, bold, young leaders who change what it means to be a Democrat.
So, I announced that Leaders We Deserve would challenge asleep-at-the-wheel incumbents in safe blue districts. Not to weaken the party but to strengthen it. To create accountability. To ensure that no seat is so “safe” that it excuses stagnation.
I could bore you to death about by-laws, and get into the nitty gritty of the “procedural” maneuver the DNC used to re-do the vice chair election, but for now, I’ll say this: that decision terrified the establishment.
So I chose not to seek re-election. And honestly? That decision unlocked everything.
Stepping away meant freedom. Freedom to fully focus on backing bold, forward-thinking leaders like Justin Pearson, Nida Allam, and Patrick Roath. Freedom to send Christian Menefee to Congress.
Freedom to challenge a political ecosystem that too often rewards consultants who make millions while campaigns lose the most consequential elections of our lifetime. Freedom to build something better.
Today isn’t a day for regret. It’s a day to reflect on what Leaders We Deserve has already made possible and the work still ahead.
Sometimes growth requires discomfort. Leaving the DNC freed me to act decisively, support real change-makers, and fight for a Democratic Party that actually resonates with voters. And the data is starting to show it — recent polling and youth turnout in Virginia prove young people are beginning to come back.
And Kendall, none of this happens without you. Our candidates don’t take corporate PAC money. They don’t answer to special interests. They rely on grassroots supporters like you.
I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together — and grateful for the more than 200,000 donors who give us the independence to do what’s right, not what’s comfortable.
Thank you for being part of this movement.

We’re working to build a democracy where every voice is heard, every vote counts, and every person has the opportunity to prosper.
Government Shutdown
The government shutdown is underway with seemingly no end in sight.
The ACA’s future hangs in the balance.
Each day, more and more headlines appear that show our administration is fracturing.
But the American people are standing strong. They’re ready for change. And we’re ready to help.Visit our website to learn how you can get involved.
Policy: Housing is
a Human Right
In 2024, a record-breaking number of people experienced homelessness. In 2023, nearly 70% of Americans reported being ‘very concerned’ about the cost of housing. The American people care about this crisis and want it addressed.
A nation cannot call itself just while millions sleep on the streets. The housing crisis is not an accident—it is the result of policy choices that put profit over people. Skyrocketing rents, unchecked speculation, and a system that treats shelter as a commodity instead of a necessity have left too many without a place to call home.
The solution is clear: Guarantee housing as a human right. Invest in affordable housing, strengthen tenant protections, and curb corporate landlords who hoard empty units while families struggle. No one should be homeless in a country of abundance.
Action must follow principle. Demand rent control, public housing investment, and policies that prioritize people over profit. Support leaders who fight for fair housing, not those who serve developers.
This is not charity—it is justice. A stable home is the foundation of health, education, and opportunity. When people are housed, communities thrive, crime decreases, and economies grow. The right to shelter is as fundamental as the right to food or clean water.
A roof over one’s head should not be a privilege—it should be a guarantee. End the housing crisis. Secure the right to a home for all.

With gratitude,
