Tri-City Democrats – Friday, March 13, 6:00 PM
Greetings fellow Democrats!
Greetings fellow Democrats!
This month we’ll meet at the round Table Pizza on Court Street in Pasco. March 13 at 6pm. Come gather with like-minded folks and share some fellowship, food and beverages. As is our normal practice, Tri-City Democrats will order several pizzas to share. We’ll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group. Some of our generous members are likely to purchase pitchers of beer to share. If you want the salad bar or soft drinks, you are on your own for those items.
At this writing, we do not have a planned program, but we will have ‘Hate Has no Home Here’ signs available.

OUR ENERGY FUTURE: Can we meet the demand?
HYBRID Badger Forum Thursday, March 26 | 12 NOON
In Person and Online
New data centers, manufacturing, food processing, not to mention the new electrical demands yet to be discovered. Who will generate the power to meet those demands, and how? Who will deliver it? What’s driving the demand? It’s easy to complain about big load creators—until we want to ask a question of A-I or look for a job. Our panel of experts will help shed some light on the ongoing need to create jobs through economic development and the power required to keep those new workers on the job.

In the future, we will…
Create a community of open hearts, helping hands and supportive systems where strangers become friends and we all thrive.
“My favorite thing about working here is seeing students succeed,” says Jon Gibbons, a volunteer in B5’s adult English program. He’s had a lot of opportunities to see students succeed as he volunteered in our program daily since May 2025.
Jon has been accepted into the Peace Corps and looks forward to leaving soon to teach English in Kosovo. Being an assistant in Lois Douglass’ beginning level English class is great preparation for that experience. Jon has learned a lot about teaching English from watching Lois.

In the beginning level class, Jon works with individuals and small groups, helping students practice grammar, letter and sound recognition, and more. Recently he worked with one woman on her speaking skills, asking and answering questions in preparation for the level three speaking test. Having Jon’s help in the class allows Lois to continue teaching the larger group.

Part of B5’s vision is to create a sense of community and belonging among their students, helping them feel at home in America. Jon feels he plays a part of that vision. “[In our classes] we have Afghan students greeting their Hispanic colleagues. It transcends language and religion, and it brings people together who wouldn’t normally be brought together,” he says.
Jon will be missed by both Lois and the students when he leaves for the Peace Corps. We wish him well and hope he has many opportunities to apply what he’s learned at B5 in Kosovo. Meanwhile, B5 is looking for more volunteers to fill the hole Jon leaves behind. Maybe one of those people is you!

FAQ from A Better Richland
Richland registered voters will vote this November to update the Richland City Council election process to be like the rest of Washington’s First-Class Cities, Pasco, and Kennewick.
Currently all seven members of the Richland council are elected “at-large.” They can live anywhere in the city. A vote to change the city charter would mean five council members would have to be elected from the districts where they live and two would still be elected “at-large”. Each of the five proposed districts would have approximately 12,000 residents. An interactive map on our website can show you in which district you would live.

Friend, this is starting to get creepy.
This week, President Trump escalated the stakes to an all-time high, vowing that he will refuse to sign any legislation—including critical funding bills—until the U.S. Senate passes the disastrous SAVE America Act, which significantly suppresses voting rights. [1]
*Join the over 14k MomsRising members who have already signed on to tell Congress to not give in to Trump’s anti-voter agenda. *When you click you’ll automatically sign on to the letter below.
Weakening voting rights just became President Trump’s top priority. He called it a “Country defining fight,” as he pushes U.S. Senate leadership to bypass traditional rules to force it through. [2] While the anti-voter “SAVE Act 2.0” is being fast-tracked, our right to vote is being hit from every angle, including these harmful proposals that limit our voting rights:
- The “Marriage Barrier”: The Act requires a passport or a birth certificate that matches your current name. For 69 million married women, their birth certificates don’t match their current legal married names. [3]
- Passport Access Cut: Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s department just ordered 15% of public libraries to stop processing passports, cutting off the most accessible option for working families. [4]
- The Voter Data Grab: While the SAVE Act moves through Congress, the DOJ is also suing dozens of states to seize unredacted voter rolls containing private information like the last four digits of Social Security numbers. Critics warn this data could be used for intimidation or to force mass purges of eligible voters. [5]
Protecting the right to vote is getting more critical by the day. When you click, you’ll automatically sign on to our letter to Congress, which says:
We urge you to vote NO on the SAVE Act because this bill will create huge barriers to register to vote for the more than half of Americans who do not have passports. More than 21 million eligible voters don’t have these documents readily available. When Kansas and Arizona implemented similar requirements, they blocked tens of thousands of eligible American citizens from registering to vote.
Moreover, this legislation would end voter registration drives, online and mail voter registration, and other voter registration efforts that are critical to voters, regardless of political party.
The SAVE Act is a dangerous anti-voter bill that will not make our elections safer, but will create barriers that weaken our democracy and silence voters, regardless of political party.
Tell Congress to not give in to this anti-American agenda: REJECT the anti-voter SAVE Act
The SAVE Act does nothing to make elections safer—it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in America. Instead, it forces working moms who changed their names when they got married to spend hundreds of dollars and hours of time on paperwork just to exercise a fundamental right.
Together, we can keep our right to vote intact.
Nina, Kristin, and the whole MomsRising.org & MamásConPoder Team

Dear Friend,
Across the country, our communities are living through fear, loss, and deep uncertainty, not because crime is out of control, but because federal law enforcement accountability has been erased. When President Trump took office last January, one of the first things his administration did was rescind the executive order that created the National Law Enforcement Accountability Database (NLEAD); as a result, the Department of Justice shut it down. This database helped ensure that officers with histories of misconduct couldn’t simply move from one agency to another without scrutiny. [1]
Tell Congress to reinstate the National Law Enforcement Accountability Database

We are now seeing what happens when accountability is taken away:
When you click, you’ll automatically sign on to our petition that reads:
Dear Member of Congress:
We urge you to take immediate action to reinstate the National Law Enforcement Accountability Database (NLEAD), a federal database that tracked law enforcement misconduct and helped ensure that officers with histories of abuse, excessive force, discrimination, or harassment could not easily move between agencies without accountability.
The decision by the Trump Administration and the Department of Justice to decommission NLEAD weakens public trust and undermines public safety. Without this database, federal agents, including those in ICE and Border Patrol, can operate without meaningful oversight, and officers with histories of misconduct can continue to impact communities, including immigrant families, Black and Brown neighborhoods, and everyday Americans simply trying to live their lives with dignity and safety.
Across Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, and other cities, we are already seeing the consequences. Families have lost loved ones. Immigrant parents are separated from their children. Communities are living in fear rather than feeling protected. These outcomes are precisely what accountability mechanisms like NLEAD were meant to prevent. Our families deserve better. Our communities deserve accountability. Our nation deserves justice realized, not erased.
We cannot allow this erosion of safety and accountability to stand. Congress must step in immediately to reinstate the National Law Enforcement Accountability Database so that officers with histories of abuse, violence, or misconduct are not allowed to slip through the cracks.
Every signature sends a clear message: our children, our families, and our communities deserve protection, not policies that undermine accountability and put them at risk. Please take a moment to share our action link with your friends and family.
With hope and solidarity,
Beatriz, Monifa, Kristin, and the whole MomsRising.org & MamásConPoder Team
P.S.– As we navigate these challenging times, I hope you can make space for self-care, recognizing that resting is not idleness, but a necessity, and we need all of us to win the change our families and nation need!

At the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network, we carry this truth with us every day: this movement has always been held up by women.
Women make up half of the world’s immigrants, and most migrate for the same reasons men do¹. But gender norms, roles, and power dynamics affect women differently at every stage of migration: from the decision to leave, to the journey itself, and the realities of arriving in a new country.
Here in the U.S., immigrant women face a gendered labor market, forcing them to take positions such as seamstresses, domestic workers, caregivers, and nurses—roles that are often poorly paid, unregulated, and invisible to labor laws and worker protections²—while often also carrying the unpaid labor of being caretakers and homemakers.
At its core, immigration is a feminist issue, shaped by the realities of caregiving, economic survival, bodily autonomy, and the right to keep our families together.
This is the lens we bring to our work, one that recognizes and challenges how colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy all work together to push marginalized people out of their homes and then punish them for seeking something better.
From our staff, board of directors, and leadership to our partner organizations across Washington, immigrant justice is carried forward by women.
They lead our Deportation Defense Hotline and Rapid Response teams. They accompany community members to immigration appointments and hearings. They organize for codified legal protections for immigrants in Olympia. They work every day to ensure that detained community members can post immigration bonds to reunite with their families, and so much more.
On International Women’s Day and beyond, we celebrate the daughters, mothers, and organizers who hold both the labor of movement work and the labor of their homes, families, and communities with fierce love and unwavering commitment.
This work is not only resistance, but a labor of love grounded in care, powered by collective strength, and sustained by joy.
So today we invite you to celebrate some of these incredible women with us. Head to our social media, and if it’s safe to do so, tag a woman leading immigrant justice in your community.
In community,

This year marks two important milestones: the 100th anniversary of historian and author Carter G. Woodson establishing Negro History Week, and the 50th anniversary of Black History Month’s official national commemoration.
We take this time to honor the immeasurable contributions of Black Americans — socially, culturally, tangibly, and intangibly; and to remind ourselves that the mission of Black liberation is inherently tied to all of our collective movements for justice.
Throughout history, Black Americans have stood side-by-side with immigrants in the struggle for liberation. But Black history is not confined to the past. It is a present, living, and continuously evolving story shaped by individuals across every generation in the United States including Black immigrants.
Here in Washington, it’s estimated that 78,000 Black immigrants call our state home, with 68,000 in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area alone¹. They are invaluable community members with deep roots in countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea, and Jamaica — who are organizers, workers, artists, parents, and community leaders.
Yet despite Black immigrants’ deep roots in our communities, they are forced to contend with both anti-Black racism and xenophobia. They are disproportionately targeted by immigration enforcement agencies² and policed by the same racist systems that have persecuted Black communities in the United States for generations.
So when communities fail to recognize and uplift Black immigrants, when Black immigrants are attacked by politicians³, or when the reported stories of Black victims of ICE’s terror campaign on our communities are not discussed in the news⁴, we must recognize that this too is anti-Blackness.
Black, immigrant, trans, and queer communities have shaped American culture as we know it today, and our resilience persists against many similar culprits and their tactics: from forced migration and displacement to exclusion and targeted over-policing.
These shared experiences make clear that we also must share a vision for a future in which we can live in joy — freely and unapologetically. Our path forward is one we must walk together, where we reject anti-Blackness for mutual love and respect, and where the wins we fight for support all of us.
By learning from each other and continuing to show up for one another across our differences, we can move toward a future with more freedom, love, and joy for everyone.

[ENGLISH ABOVE]

A Message from Emily
Programming is in full swing at the Washington Institute for a Democratic Future, and every single weekend, I am reminded why this work matters.
I continue to be in awe of our fellows, our alumni, and the local leaders who generously make time to share their experiences with us. What stands out most is the diversity of thought, even within progressive spaces. Our fellows are learning from one another, from the communities we visit across Washington (and yes, a little bit of Oregon), and from advocates and public servants navigating very different political landscapes and challenges.
The Democratic Party is not a monolith. That reality can sometimes feel messy. It can lead to spirited debate about priorities, strategy, and what deserves our loudest attention. But it is also our strength. When we take the time to truly listen to each other’s lived experiences, to understand the pressures facing different regions and communities, and to reflect on how those realities shape perspective, we build something far more durable. That understanding shapes how we lead. It shapes how we collaborate. And it shapes how we move forward, together.
I invite you to join us for a weekend. Come meet the fellows. Host a reception in your community. Reconnect with your own journey in politics, government, or advocacy. Growth doesn’t stop once we have a title or a role. It continues when we stay curious, stay humble, and stay connected.
We are building leaders for a democratic future, and we are doing it together.
-Emily

Join us for our 17th Annual Trivia Night & Silent Auction on March 19!
The Washington, D.C. trip is just around the corner, and the 2026 Fellows are hard at work preparing for their biggest fundraiser of the year.
Join us at Clock-Out Lounge for WAIDF’s 17th Annual Trivia Night & Silent Auction and help send the next generation of leaders to D.C. Compete for prizes, show off your smarts, and gather your smartest (or most competitive) friends for a night that is always equal parts fun and meaningful.
There are plenty of ways to get involved:
- Buy a ticket or build a team of six. Bring your friends, colleagues, or fellow alumni and claim trivia glory.
- Become an event co-host. Co-hosts receive a team of six plus six drink tickets, and the benefits grow as your sponsorship level increases.
- Donate a silent auction item Gift certificates, unique experiences, themed baskets, premium merchandise, curated art, professional services — we welcome it all. It’s a great way to support the Fellows while showcasing your organization. Got an idea? Email trivia@democraticfuture.org
- Give directly to the D.C. Fund.
Can’t attend? You can still make a difference. Contributions to the D.C. Fund go directly to the Fellows to help cover airfare, meals, transportation, professional attire, and other trip expenses.

Gather with alumni, supporters, elected officials, and community leaders and meet our impressive Class of 2026, who will be in Olympia that week. Our cohort of emerging leaders works across public service, advocacy, labor, and civic life throughout Washington State and can’t wait to connect with all of you.

After the Weekend — Notes and Reflections from the Class of 2026
The first of the series of notes and reflections from the Class of 2026 is brought to you by Xavier Ajeto and Manousos Jacobsen:
Day 1: “The start of day one felt like a college syllabus day; my highlights were the introductions and getting to know everyone. The pace picked up significantly after lunch as we heard from Eric Liu on citizenship and institutions, Wil Johnson on equity, and Ken Workman on tribal affairs. We gained new perspectives on the challenges facing our country and left with a shared sense of civic responsibility and optimism about our role in the solution.”
Day 2: “Day two of our fellowship took us deep into the mechanisms of power. We dug into the weeds, breaking down progressive tax revenue and mapping out how institutional structures shape what’s possible in political organizing and government. We met with the founder Lisa Witter and reflected on the WAIDF’s mission to elevate young people in democratic politics. A highlight of the day was hearing from Seattle Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck, who shared candid insights on running for office and turning progressive values into real policy wins. Our takeaway: meaningful change requires both vision and fluency in the systems that govern us. This is the work that our cohort will continue to build on in the months ahead.”

Thank you for helping meet the needs!
Thanks to your generosity, we were able to meet all of the initial financial assistance requests of the Class of 2026.
One of the most critical aspects of the program is ensuring access and affordability for all fellows throughout the programming year. From mileage for fellows traveling across the state to ensuring everyone can afford lunch, a contribution, whether it’s $5, $25, $250, or $5,000, helps ensure that every fellow in this program can participate fully. Your contribution keeps our tuition low, offsets travel, and opens doors for leaders who might otherwise be shut out of the full experience.
Every dollar helps us live our values: that leadership shouldn’t depend on your income.

Interested in joining the board of directors or board of advisors?
As WAIDF approaches our 30th anniversary in 2028, we’re growing — and we want you to be part of it.
We’re recruiting passionate individuals for two leadership opportunities: our Board of Directors and our newly established Board of Advisors.
Board of Directors
Ready to roll up your sleeves? Our working board is where your voice, expertise, and energy directly shape the next generation of progressive leaders. Directors collaborate to guide strategy, oversee our signature fellowship program, and build the pipeline of leaders Washington needs. We’re seeking problem-solvers with skills in governance, finance, communications, technology, fundraising, or program development. One position we are trying to fill is the Treasurer role. If you have a financial background or are willing to step into the role and learn the ins and outs of being a Treasurer, we’d love to hear from you!
Board of Advisors
Prefer to lend your expertise without the time demands of a governing board? Our first-ever Board of Advisors will serve as strategic thought partners for the road ahead. We’re seeking seasoned professionals who can offer guidance through quarterly meetings and flexible engagement.
Both roles offer the chance to make a lasting impact on progressive leadership development in Washington and beyond.

There’s a lot of talk about “centrism” in politics — but what is “the center” really about? Is it about splitting the difference between the far-right and far-left? Or is it about standing for things that are broadly popular and broadly beneficial?
Centrism can mean a lot of different things, but as Civic Action founder Nick Hanauer argues in The New Republic, the neoliberal centrism that has long dominated our politics is fundamentally about balancing the interests of the very wealthy with the interests of everyone else.
The neoliberal centrism of splitting differences is how you end up with a federal minimum wage stagnant at $7.25 for 15 years — it’s right in the center of the $0 that wealthy extremists want, and the $15/hour that’s overwhelmingly popular.
That’s not centrism, that’s defending the status quo.
But there’s also another kind of center — a majoritarian center that’s focused on centering the interests of the majority of people. It’s not about splitting differences — it’s about pursuing policies that are broadly popular and broadly beneficial.
That’s what true majoritarian centrism is about. It’s the neoliberal center that’s actually extreme.
Check out Nick’s piece, share it with friends & family, and let us know what you think.

Washington built something the rest of the country didn’t have: the first state office in the nation dedicated exclusively to firearm safety and violence prevention.
The current proposed budgets are cutting it drastically.
The Office of Firearm Safety & Violence Prevention (OFSVP) funds the community-based work that actually moves the needle, through street outreach, credible messenger programs, safe storage education, suicide prevention, and violence intervention run by trusted people in the neighborhoods most impacted. These aren’t abstract policy line items. They’re trained responders who interrupt and defuse dangerous situations before someone gets shot.
As proposed, the budget would cut funding entirely for Washington’s Safe Storage program, which to date has distributed over 15,000 of these devices free to over 31 counties statewide. In addition, cutting this funding will not save Washington taxpayers money. It, instead, shifts the costs to hospitals, first responders, schools, and courts. Gun violence already costs Washington taxpayers an estimated $171.7 million a year. Defunding prevention makes that number go up.
Last week, 30 organizations, including the Alliance for Gun Responsibility, sent a joint letter to the Legislature urging full funding restoration. Now we need constituents to back that up with direct pressure.
Take 60 seconds to send a letter to your legislators today.
The Legislature is still in session. There’s still time. But not much.

SB 5974 is sitting still waiting for a vote on the floor. If the House votes today, it stays alive and can move to the Governor’s desk.
Washington voters are already clear on this. A new statewide poll found 75% support for SB 5974, with only 18% opposed.
If you have a minute, would you send another quick note to your Representative asking them to support a floor vote today?
Thank you,
Mike McIntyre
P.S. The clock is real: the House has to act by 5 PM Friday, March 6 for SB 5974 to keep moving.

Update! The Millionaires Tax could be brought to the floor of the Washington State House of Representatives any moment now – can we count on you to make one last round of calls to your Reps and urge them to get the bill across the finish line?
ICYMI: Over the weekend, Governor Ferguson announced he would sign the Millionaires Tax! That means the vote in the House could be the last big hurdle for the bill. We’ll be tuned in as lawmakers deliberate over the final details, and you’ll hear from us as soon as we learn more.

It’s time for urgent action. Some lawmakers are still undecided on the Millionaires Tax (SB 6346) – and these are critical votes. We are hearing that CALLS are the best way to reach lawmakers right now. Click to leave voicemails with your lawmakers asking them to vote YES on SB 6346 and pass a historic Millionaires Tax.
We’re asking you to call and then email your State Representatives today and tell them it’s time to pass the Millionaires Tax. If you can only do one, friendly lawmakers tell us that phone calls are having the biggest impact. All you have to do is enter your information and follow our sample script!
We’ve worked hard this session to show our lawmakers how much WA needs the Millionaires Tax. We need funding for education, health care, child care, and more crucial state services. We need to make up our state’s budget shortfall without adding cuts to already struggling families. We need to make WA’s wealthiest pay their share in taxes.
This is our last big chance to tell our lawmakers that we don’t have to cut education and healthcare if we make mega-millionaires and billionaires pay what they owe.
It’s time for urgent action to pass the Millionaires Tax. Make your calls now!

Northwest Immigrant Rights Project

The federal administration has established a goal of conducting the largest mass detention and deportation effort in U.S. history. This effort has already resulted in a significant increase of enforcement actions forcing family separation and uprooting people from their homes and communities. One unstated hope behind these efforts, however, is that they want people like us to quit.
But that is not going to happen. It’s not going to happen because we are in partnerships in Washington State and across the country, ensuring our communities have the information they need and that our high-quality legal services are accessible to them. Together, we will continue to fight on. Our legal team is making a difference, ensuring our community members are supported through their removal defense proceedings and released from immigration custody. Our impact litigation team continues to challenge denial of bonds, including through a historic number of habeas petitions filed to challenge unlawful detentions. And our community outreach efforts have tripled over the past year, from reaching 7,400 people in 2024 to over 25,400 people in 2025.
NWIRP has defended and advanced immigrant rights for over 42 years and counting because of people like you who are stepping up – even when it’s hard. During these difficult times, I am so grateful for your dedication to our communities. We cannot do this work without you and without our communities of support.

Court Finds Trump Administration’s Third-Country Removal Policy is Unlawful, Vacates the Policy
Alongside our partners at Human Rights First (HRF) and the National Immigration Litigation Alliance (NILA), we welcome yesterday’s decision from the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, declaring unlawful and setting aside the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) third country removal policy. DHS has relied on the policy to send noncitizens under final orders of removal to third countries—countries to which they were not ordered removed—without notice or opportunity to seek protection from persecution and torture. The decision granted partial summary judgment in D.V.D. v. DHS, a case in which NWIRP and our partners NILA and HRF represent a nationwide class of individuals with certain final removal orders.
In issuing his order, Judge Murphy stated, “The Department of Homeland Security has adopted a policy whereby it may take people and drop them off in parts unknown—in so-called ‘third countries’—and, ‘as long as the Department doesn’t already know that there’s someone standing there waiting to shoot… that’s fine.’ It is not fine, nor is it legal.”
The Court’s decision confirms that the law requires the agency to comply with basic notions of decency, ensuring that the United States does not deport people to countries where they are likely to be persecuted or tortured. The agency is not entitled to use third country removals as a weapon of intimidation and terror targeting immigrant communities.
The district court stayed its decision for fifteen days to allow the government to seek a stay from the First Circuit pending appeal.
Celebrating 100 Years of Black History Month
This year marks the 100 year anniversary of Black History Month! While the month of February wasn’t recognized as Black History Month by the United States government until 1976, the Black community began the important work of celebrating and acknowledging their impact in this country 100 years ago in 1926. Black History Month is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of Black immigrants in the United States; it is also a reminder of the work that must continue to be done to fight back against anti-Black policies which harm fellow community members, including many in NWIRP’s client communities. We encourage you to support the leadership and work of organizations like African Communities Together, Black Alliance for Just Immigration, Haitian Bridge Alliance, Lavender Rights Project, Law For Black Lives, Mother Africa, and UndocuBlack Network.

Taking Action in Olympia
Over the past several weeks, NWIRP has stood alongside our partners in Olympia for powerful days of advocacy and community leadership. Together, we’re raising our voices, building power, and advocating for policies that strengthen our communities across Washington State.
We are thankful to our legislators for their partnership and ongoing support of the Washington Migrant Asylum Seeker Support (WA MASS) Program and the VOCA State Plan, and that funding is sustained for the Legal Aid for Low-Income Immigrants Program and the New Americans Program in their proposed supplemental operating budgets.
While we are grateful for these commitments from legislators in support of our communities, we need your help to protect the future of immigrant health care in Washington State. The Apple Health Expansion (AHE) provides vital healthcare coverage to thousands of immigrants with low income across Washington State. However, cuts and a program restructure are currently being considered which could put many community members at risk. Please take a moment to send a message to legislators in Senate Ways & Means and House Appropriations, urging them to fully fund healthcare for all Washingtonians. Sign on today for this joint organizational letter in support of Apple Health Expansion.

Celebrating Social Work Month
Did you know that March is Social Work Month? The theme for the 2026 Social Work Month is “Social Workers: Uplift. Defend. Transform.” Social workers provide essential support to children, adults, and families by connecting them to critical resources and services to ensure their safety, stability, and well-being.
NWIRP’s Social Services Unit, established in 2019, provides one-on-one support to our clients to help them access needed resources and services in their local community. As an integral part of NWIRP’s interdisciplinary legal team, the Social Services Unit works alongside the legal staff to provide holistic services to NWIRP clients while they navigate their legal immigration case.
Today, we are excited to celebrate the commitment and hard work of the NWIRP team: three full-time Social Services staff members and four social work practicum students from local universities. We extend our deepest appreciation to them for their work, which helps uplift, defend, and transform the lives of NWIRP’s client communities every day.
We also extend our gratitude to social workers across the country for their dedication to empowering children, adults, and families and advancing social justice, particularly in these difficult times.

Our Latest NWIRP Immigration Updates Webinars
On Tuesday, we held another free immigration updates webinar for the community. This training will be uploaded soon alongside all our free webinars at this link.

Join Us for Our Annual Gala on May 15!
This is a pivotal moment for the immigrant rights movement, and we are committed to doing everything we can to protect our community from continued attacks from the federal government. Right now, your support is vital for our staff and clients. It is a source of hope and strength as we defend our community and their rights.
With this in mind, as well as to gather in celebration of our partnerships and successes in litigation, we invite you to gather with us at our most critical fundraiser of the year: our annual gala at the Westin Seattle on Friday, May 15th. Registration is now open at the link below, and early bird ticket pricing is available through April 3.

The Yakima Herald says:
As devastating as [cutting Medicaid] would be for individuals, it also imperils critical basic funding for hospitals and nursing homes around the state.
“Hospitals will close in Washington state, in rural parts of our state and urban parts of our state,” Ferguson warned last month. “Take that to the bank. That’s going to happen. Nursing homes in our state will close.”
Newhouse is sticking to his story, though, falsely claiming that the Medicaid system is rife with fraud and waste, and that this bill merely cleans up the books and keeps benefits flowing for legitimate recipients.
But Newhouse is no fool. He chose his words carefully before he voted.
He may have promised not to directly cut Medicaid, but he knew full well that’s exactly what H.R. 1 would ultimately mean. Now he’s coldly trying to justify turning his back on the harm this heartless legislation will cause the 4th District.
That’s not just disappointing or dismaying. It’s disgraceful.
Rep. Newhouse can change his vote when this bill comes up again. We know that personal stories and experiences can powerfully persuade members of Congress. Can you share your reasons for opposing Medicaid cuts?
Thank you for all you do!
Sincerely,
Emilio Meraz-Rodriguez

The Washington Health Trust is back in the Senate
The 2025 legislative session has started, and it’s time to contact our elected officials! Once again, Senator Bob Hasegawa from Legislative District 11 has introduced the Washington Health Trust (WHT). We’re incredibly grateful for Senator Hasegawa’s advocacy on this critical issue, and now, it’s time for us to spring into action. We need co-sponsors to the bill ASAP. The deadline for co-sponsors is 5 PM today, so time is of the essence. See the Actions below.
We’re Spreading the Word!

Whole Washington volunteers, Board members, and our Executive Director were in Olympia on opening day, dropping off literature and making contact with office staff. It’s a bustling time in the capitol and a great opportunity for us to create some heat.
As Jim noted, we’re “taking our bill to our legislators before they’re even sworn in.” Thank you to all for your time, passion, and advocacy!
What are the chances for the WHT this year?
We’ve been advised Senate Bill 5233 will not receive a hearing this session. It’s our responsibility and obligation to not go silent. Our healthcare is much too important.
A hearing on comprehensive universal healthcare is more pressing than ever. Washington State has a massive budget shortfall (10 to 12 billion in the coming four years). Opportunites to save money need to be reviewed, and the WHT is just such an opportunity.
Both the Universal Health Care Commission Report and the 2021 Gerald Friedman analysis, show significant savings (anywhere from 738 million to 12 billion, depending on the model) while providing expanded benefits like vision, dental, and mental health services. We’d feel better and we’d save money. It’d be negligent to ignore a close review of the bill at this time.
What actions do we take right now?
There’s plenty we can do to press the WHT forward. Right now, these are the two big ones.
- Make Online Comments in support of the bill. Click on the top green button on the right that says Send a comment on this bill to your legislators. You’ll click the Support button and add your personal comments. Remember to send to your Senator plus both House Representative
- Contact your elected officials. This is the most vital action you can do today! Call or write them and let them know you support this Universal Healthcare bill. Ask your Senator to co-sponsor SB 5233 as soon as possible. Ask your Representatives to introduce a companion bill. Need help finding contact info? Use the District Finder here.
Reach out to Republicans and Independents too. Universal Healthcare is good for all of us!
Please reply back to this email if you make contact or leave a message. We’d love to hear what actions you’re taking and what you’re hearing from their offices.
Want to know more about the new WHT?
Join us tomorrow for the Virtual Town Hall! We’ll cover what’s different, share our stories, and plan together how to make the most of this moment!
Thank you so much for anything and everything you put in today to make some noise and increase the awareness for this legislation. This is not Whole Washington’s bill. It’s Washington’s bill. We can make our lives better. We just have to demand it.
In passionate and hopeful solidarity,
Whole Washington

Over the last decade, we’ve watched ultra-conservative politicians target transgender Americans to score political wins. Hundreds of bills have been introduced nationwide restricting the rights of trans people—and now a similar playbook is being used here in Washington.
This November, we must defeat the two ballot measures bankrolled by Brian Heywood, a Republican mega-donor who has been working for years to impose his conservative ideology on our state.
Measure IL26-001 would weaken protections for student safety. If it passes, schools will be forced to out LGBTQ+ students to unsupportive families, parents under investigation for abuse can access confidential student records, and access to counseling and support for students facing bullying, violence, or depression will be restricted.
Measure IL26-638 would impose a statewide ban on trans girls in sports and could pressure schools to require invasive, medically unnecessary physical exams just for girls to participate in athletics. These requirements would fall hardest on rural, low-income, and Black and brown students who already face barriers to care.
The truth is, these measures are a distraction from the real issues facing Washington families.
These measures don’t lower housing costs. They don’t fix our childcare crisis. And they don’t make healthcare more affordable. They are designed to divide us—and to turn our schools and vulnerable kids into political battlegrounds.
Here in Washington, we have a choice to turn the tide.
If we defeat these measures, we won’t just protect our students. We’ll send a clear message nationwide: demonizing transgender kids for political gain is a losing strategy.
That’s why this fight matters.
Thank you for standing up for our kids.

I’m Dr. Grace Shih, a family physician and a practicing primary care doctor. For 13 years, I’ve cared for patients across our state—including many families and LGBTQ+ youth.
I’m writing today because, as a doctor, I understand that ballot measures IL26-001 and IL26-638 would cause real harm to children and families in Washington. I encourage you to join me in opposing these measures by supporting No Hate in WA State now.
Washington is already facing major challenges with patient access to care. Many Washington families—especially those in rural or underserved areas—struggle to find a regular doctor at all. The last thing we should be doing is adding new, unnecessary, and complicated medical hurdles, especially for kids who already face stigma.
IL26-638 would require clinicians to perform medically unnecessary evaluations. That’s not health care—and it directly conflicts with our ethical duty to do no harm. The current WIAA sports form does not require sex or gender verification. These initiatives would change that.
The consequences go beyond school sports. For many students, participating in school athletics is much more than a game: it’s a community where they make their closest friends, challenge themselves, and grow their self-confidence. If parents or students fear bureaucratic or invasive requirements just to sign up, some kids could be discouraged or unable to participate because of logistical hurdles. That would be holding our kids back from their own potential.
As a professor and physician, I prioritize evidence, ethics, and patient well-being. These measures undermine all three.
Thank you for standing up for our kids.

One Million Rising Registrants,
After an incredible summer of organizing together and building our capacity to fight authoritarianism into the future, join us for our final One Million Rising call this Wednesday, October 8, at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
Many of you have been taking part in our Signs of Solidarity, Ground Avelo, and other One Million Rising campaigns. Come hear more about how they’ve been going, how you can stay plugged in, and how they’ve evolved as you’ve been spreading strategic non-cooperation across the country.
The highlight of this call will be our launch of the Courage Collectives.
For One Million Rising, we talked about how the best way to fight authoritarianism isn’t by aiming at the top, but through addressing the pillars upholding the regime. Those pillars can be houses of faith, educational institutions, military branches, and any number of other organizations, societies, or groupings of people that hold community power. But we didn’t talk about how to organize to address these pillars.
Unlike your typical organizing model, pillars-based organizing may not be local. As an example, alumni of a university that is upholding the agenda of an authoritarian administration may be located across the country. Come learn how we’ll be organizing pillars-based communities with our Courage Collectives. **Bonus: We’ll also be giving a training on what power mapping is and how to connect it to your pillars-based organizing work.
After the October 8 call, One Million Rising will wind down as a freestanding program, and the infrastructure and campaigns will fold back into the No Kings movement, the new Courage Collectives, and other organizing paths we’ll share on the call. Join us this Wednesday to learn more.
Thank you for growing this movement with us,
The One Million Rising Team
P.S. If you haven’t registered for your local October 18 No Kings Day event yet, find an event near you on our event map. We have already surpassed the number of events from the June No Kings Day and are looking to make this the biggest single-day nonviolent protest in American history. Find an event near you, and invite your friends.

Indivisible Rural Program [2021 WORKING DOC]

Hello Indivisible Red & Rural Caucus,
As February comes to a close, we celebrate Black history and its deep roots in rural communities, from farming and land stewardship to labor organizing, mutual aid, faith leadership, and civic engagement. These often-overlooked stories show how Black people have shaped rural life and democracy for generations and remind us of the power of organized communities, power we will carry into our work together in 2026.
First Red and Rural Caucus Call of 2026
We didn’t get a chance to connect in February, but we’re looking forward to seeing everyone next month!
Our next Red and Rural Caucus call will be a little different. We’re meeting on Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 PM ET, a change from our usual schedule to avoid conflicting with all the No Kings 3 trainings happening during the week.
The session will be facilitated by our Campaigns Director, Gracey, a fresh face to guide our conversation on the plan for 2026, and Tim, our Mobilization Director, who will explore how members can plug into No Kings while building power in red and rural communities.
Register below to receive reminders. We have many exciting plans for 2026 and can’t wait to see you there!
NO KINGS 3
We’re gearing up for the next round of No Kings protests, and we’d love to hear from you. Let us know whether you’re planning to host a No Kings event in your community, and what kind of support you’d need to make it a success. Whether you’re just starting to think about it or already organizing, we’re here to support you.
Take Action Now
Republicans are once again pushing for a series of voter suppression bills—all variations of their infamous “SAVE Act”, which would create unnecessary obstacles for millions of eligible Americans trying to register to vote.
Congress is negotiating new funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at a moment when ICE and CBP are inflicting real harm on communities. This resource breaks down what we’re demanding and how you can take action.
In Solidarity,

Join Our Call December 3rd 5pm PST!
Dear Rural Indivisibles,
I’m writing with a quick reminder and warm invitation to join us for this month’s Rural Caucus Call. As we close out the year, we’re gathering to reflect on what our local groups have accomplished, connect those wins to our broader national priorities, and share an early look at what’s ahead for the caucus in 2026.
This call is also a space to ground ourselves before the year ends — to celebrate, listen, and prepare for the work and care we’ll need moving forward.
You’ll leave with a clear picture of the incredible work rural groups have led this year, how those efforts strengthen our national strategy, and what our early plans are for the caucus in 2026 — including ways you can plug in.
Our hope is that you leave feeling an even stronger sense of ownership in the Rural Caucus. We’ll uplift stories directly from local groups and include a listening segment with a short survey so your voice shapes where we go next.
Before the holidays begin, we want you to take something for yourself — so we’ll be inviting everyone to make a small self-care plan and commit to returning together in January, ready and renewed.
We truly hope you’ll join us for this closing conversation of 2025. Your presence continues to shape this caucus and the possibilities we’re building across red & rural communities.
Looking forward to being in community with each of you.
Warmly,
– The Indivisible Red and Rural Caucus Team

One Year In: Why Local Politics Matter More in a Post-Trump Era
Substack – GRWM: Jess Britvich X NDTC
At the heart of NDTC’s mission is our belief that every Democrat should be able to run for office.
That’s why every training we’ve ever hosted, every course we’ve developed, and every resource we’ve crafted have all been 100% free.
Like most Democrats, we have big goals set for 2026. If we’re going to win and stay dedicated to lowering barriers, we need to reach as many people as possible. So we have a favor to ask you — and it’s not money!
First, will you subscribe to our Substack? It tells the algorithm you’re interested in our content and gets you even more insider knowledge, campaign tips, and candidate stories delivered weekly.
Second, will you forward this email to someone who could benefit from NDTC’s resources? Maybe you have a friend considering a run for office, a neighbor passionate about local politics, or someone who’s wondered how campaigns really work. Our trainings, toolkits, and community are here for them, completely free.
If you’d rather, feel free to share this link to our website instead: NDTC Website
The only way to build a stronger bench for Democrats is together. Thank you for being part of this movement.

When People Say “Don’t Bother”: Ignore Them
From the desk of Bibek, Senior Digital Strategist
There’s a reason Trump is behaving more erratically than usual and being louder about a third (illegal) term. The wheels are coming off and he wants to project strength. Apparently this includes launching a war of choice with no follow up plan. Really, it’s enough to stop bothering and give up.
Well, we looked at those headlines and collectively said “IDGAF”.
Primary season kicked off across Texas, Arkansas, and North Carolina last night, and NDTC learners — 58 State House seats, 3 State Senate seats, 43 judicial positions (Justices of the Peace, District Court Judges), and 6 school boards — advanced to the general. Winners like
Courtney King, Detrick DeBurr, Michelle Williams, Elma Hairston, among others, are moving forward. And we have a lot more Tuesdays left to go!
That’s not just a moment. That is a movement. With NDTC learners who decided to step up, do the job, and show up at the local level when everything around them said don’t bother.
We are building the bench. From the ground up. For lasting Democratic power. With candidates who know their communities, and showed up trained and ready.
This is what the work looks like. Are you next? Apply to run.

Shamal Carter didn’t run for office for the title. “Running for office is not about power,” the Arkansas State Representative for the 36th District says. “It is about purpose.” His whole platform comes down to it: service over self, people over politics. And he meant that last part literally — he put it to music. His single “People Over Politics” is out now. Give it a listen: People Over Politics — Apple Music

Why this story matters:
There is no such thing as a safe red seat anymore, especially after the “Peace President” who said “no new wars” has done exactly the opposite.
Why this story matters:
What democratic process? If he doesn’t endorse a Texas Senate candidate, Trump wants them to drop out.
Why this story matters:
Texas Latinos turned out in massive numbers for Democrats. The GOP playbook still treats “Latino voter” like a single checkbox. Voters keep proving otherwise.

Substack – Our $4 Million Investment in the Democratic Talent Pipeline

Happy start of primary season! Fundraising is the engine that powers winning campaigns. But for a lot of campaign staff, it’s also the most intimidating part of the job.
That’s exactly why NDTC created Staff Cohort: Fund The Win — a 7-week intensive program designed to take you from nervous beginner to confident fundraiser, starting March 11th.
Every Wednesday, you’ll join campaign experts (and other staff in training!) for live sessions covering:
- Week 1 (3/11): Kick Off + Planning Your Fundraising Strategy
- Week 2 (3/18): Building Your Initial Donor List
- Week 3 (3/25): Fundraising in Action — How to Ask for Money
- Week 4 (4/1): How to Raise Money Through Candidate Call Time
- Week 5 (4/8): The Secrets to Successful Fundraising Emails
- Week 6 (4/15): Live Q&A with NDTC CEO Kelly Dietrich
- Week 7 (4/22): Optimizing Your Resume for Campaign Jobs
By the end, you’ll have a complete fundraising toolkit, hands-on practice making hard asks, and a cohort of peers who’ve been in the trenches with you.
This program is built for campaign staff who are ready to stop dreading fundraising and start doing it well.
Did we mention it’s completely free? 🤑 Don’t leave money on the table; the midterms are too important.
Warmly,
– Ada, Associate Director of Marketing and Communications, NDTC

President Trump fired Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem yesterday – a clear attempt to scapegoat her without actually calling for any reform.
But we know the truth. Just this week, Noem falsely claimed to Congress that ice and Border Patrol agents are following the law, even though we’ve all directly seen how DHS has endangered and harmed our neighbors. And the agency is still asking for more money with no strings attached to keep carrying out abusive operations in our streets.
Let’s be clear: The problem didn’t start with Kristi Noem. DHS itself needs fundamental reform to end its abuse and keep our communities safe – and that starts with Congress refusing to sign over a blank check to these lawless operations.
A new face in charge does not fix the trauma and harm that ice and Border Patrol agents have inflicted against our communities, nor does it cure the culture of impunity at DHS.
Here’s the reality: DHS is continuing to put masked, armed agents in our communities to arrest parents at school pick-up, and detain U.S. citizens based on the color of their skin. The agency is proceeding to buy warehouses to detain longtime residents – even though 10 people have already died in ice custody in 2026 alone. It has detained children, trafficking victims, and DACA recipients in dangerous facilities. Agents have threatened and shot people in the streets. ice prosecutors are lying to judges, and DHS is ignoring court orders. And they’ve misled oversight committees, intimidated and obstructed oversight agencies, and dodged any accountability – proving that the agency has no interest in reforming itself.
We know DHS isn’t following the law because we’ve witnessed it in our own communities.
That’s why we’re calling on Congress to act. Taxpayer money shouldn’t be fuelling an agency that’s ripping families apart, arresting citizens without cause, and holding people in inhumane conditions.
Tell Congress to rein in ice and Border Patrol’s abuses now.

Over the weekend, President Trump announced that the U.S. was going to war with Iran.
Let us be clear: President Trump’s decision to launch a bombing campaign against a country of nearly 100 million people without bothering to ask Congress is a clear constitutional violation. He is putting servicemembers and civilians in unacceptable danger.
The Constitution gives war authority power to Congress, and Congress alone. It is what makes us a democracy, and ensures that our leaders fully consider the many costs of war – including the harm to human lives and rights, and any effects on global peace and stability – before sending troops into danger.
If President Trump wants to send U.S. servicemembers into conflict, he must make his case to the American people and their representatives in Congress. The commander in chief must follow the chain of command, and that begins with We the People.
Thank you,
The ACLU Team

Training season has arrived at Emerge—and women across the country are preparing to run for office.
Right now, hundreds of women are training through Emerge programs in Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Kentucky, Maryland, and Massachusetts—strengthening the bench in key states.
On February 1, 18 current candidates graduated from our National Boot Camp, sharpening their campaigns in races ranging from local school board to Congress.
And we’re just getting started. In March, our National Signature program and the fifth Seated Together cohort launch. Seated Together alone has already produced multiple Members of Congress—proof that early investment in women leaders works.
But none of this happens without supporters like you.

Thank you for helping build the bench for 2026.

This Women’s History Month, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the progress women have made in politics—and the role Emerge is playing in moving that progress forward.
Today, 2,480 women serve in state legislatures nationwide—about 32% of all lawmakers. That’s real progress, but we’re still far from equal representation. And none of that progress happened by accident. It’s the result of intentional work—recruiting women, training them, and supporting them every step of the way.
You can see that impact most clearly in the states leading the country.
In Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada—the three states with the highest levels of women’s representation—women now hold 50% or more of legislative seats. And Emerge women are a big part of that story. Our alums aren’t just showing up—they’re leading, governing, and shaping what’s possible.
That’s what Emerge is all about. We’re not just training candidates—we’re changing who holds power.
And we’re just getting started.
Looking ahead to 2026, hundreds of Emerge women are already on the ballot in key races across the country—many of which will decide legislative majorities and shape policy for years to come.
The progress we’re celebrating this month is the result of long-term investment. And what happens next depends on what we do right now.
If we want to see more women in power, we have to keep building—and keep winning.
Will you invest in Emerge today to help recruit, train, and elect the next generation of women leaders?
Because when Emerge women run, they win—and they change what leadership looks like.
With gratitude,
Team Emerge

Yesterday, we were ungovernable.
On International Women’s Day 2026, Women’s March and our partners took the fight to their doorsteps, literally.
We showed up at the Zorro Ranch outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the site of documented abuse, where powerful men have evaded accountability for too long. We stood on that ground and refused to let the world look away.
From coast to coast, in cities and towns, and in front of the homes and offices of the people who think they are untouchable — we showed up.
Now we build on it. Join us Wednesday, March 11, at 8PM ET for our national organizing call.
This is where we go from the street to the strategy. We’ll debrief the weekend, talk about what’s coming, and make sure every single person who marched — whether it was your first time or your hundredth — knows exactly what to do next.
See you Wednesday.
In solidarity and in struggle,
Women’s March

This is the most dangerous moment for American democracy in my lifetime.
I don’t say that to frighten you. I say it because you deserve the truth—and because the truth is the only thing that will move us to act with the urgency this moment demands.
Donald Trump unilaterally started a war with Iran. No authorization. No notification. No explanation to the American people. He simply ordered bombs dropped on another country—because he could.
That is what unchecked power looks like. And we are living inside it.
Almost 250 years ago, we fought a revolution to be free of a king who believed he could do whatever he wanted. Now we face a president who believes the same thing. There is only one question that matters right now: Will we let him get away with it?
I don’t think we will. But we have to act—by building a pro-democracy movement too big to ignore. And that’s exactly what No Kings Day on March 28 is built to do.
But movements don’t build themselves. That’s where MoveOn comes in—and why I’m writing to you today.
I know times are hard for many people right now, but if you can, will you start a monthly donation of $5 to MoveOn to help power No Kings and sustain MoveOn’s movement building? Your donation will help send 2,410+ event hosts all of the materials they need, pay for text messages to recruit new hosts and attendees, and hire more organizers to build relationships in communities across the country who will be critical to MoveOn’s sustained organizing.
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
Here’s what big days of action do that nothing else can: They reach people who are still on the sidelines. Not only the already converted. Not only the people already reading this email.
Large-scale protests can reach the folks who are angry but isolated, who think they’re alone in what they’re feeling. When they see events being organized on their main street, when they see people they know saying they are going, something shifts. They realize resistance isn’t fringe— it’s everywhere. And they take their first step.
That’s how movements grow. That’s how we build the numbers we need.
On March 28, millions of Americans will take to the streets for No Kings. More than 2,410 events are already being planned in cities and towns across the country. MoveOn is one of the core organizations making it happen—working 1-on-1 with thousands of volunteer hosts, running trainings, building and maintaining the technology infrastructure to coordinate thousands of safe and nonviolent events on a single day, and getting the word out to the media and people everywhere.
But to reach more people—people who are angry and ready to act but don’t yet know where to turn, or even that No Kings is for them—MoveOn needs to hire more organizers and expand its outreach.
MoveOn has been doing this work for more than 25 years. They can reach people in every corner of the country. But they need the resources to do it at the scale this moment demands.
As we resist tyranny, America gains solidarity. As we gain solidarity, we build courage. As we feel courageous and stand up to Trump, we weaken him and his regime.
But solidarity has to be built. It doesn’t appear on its own. It requires organizations with the capacity to find people where they are, speak to what they’re feeling, and channel their fear and anger into collective action. MoveOn is critical here.
Please donate $5 a month to MoveOn. Your ongoing support will provide the stable, predictable funding that MoveOn urgently needs to meet this moment at scale and build the movement across the country to stop authoritarianism.
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
The kings of history always believed they were untouchable. They were wrong. So is this wannabe king. Let’s prove it, together.
The stakes have never been higher.
Thanks for all you do.
–Robert Reich

Dear MoveOn member,
ICE is spending $38 billion to buy and convert warehouses across the country into detention camps—a core tactic at the center of Trump’s cruel deportation regime.1
In cities across the country, ICE is kidnapping our neighbors off the street, with a record-breaking 73,000 people currently being held in horrifying conditions at detention centers.2 And the administration is doing everything it can to grow that number as it looks to bring more and more detention centers to cities.
ICE has released plans to convert more than 20 warehouses into their inhumane and unethical camps to detain our immigrant neighbors—from Texas to Michigan to Pennsylvania. But together, we can block their plans for expansion and make it clear that we refuse to comply with Trump’s agenda.
More and more neighbors are speaking out against warehouses to hold immigrants going up in their backyards. In a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) purchased a 400,000-square-foot warehouse for $70 million. Neighbors are raising concerns with the city council on everything from the cruelty of the detention centers to their impact on the community.3
And in many places, the pressure is working—city councils have passed resolutions against ICE’s use of warehouses in El Paso, Texas, Merrillville, Indiana, and Durant, Oklahoma.4 And in Kansas City, Missouri, a company halted a sale on a warehouse to DHS after public opposition and local action from the city council.5
Kansas City Council member Johnathan Duncan said, “Every single person in the city should, and did, use their voice to say what type of business we want here in Kansas City, and what type of business owners we want here.”6
No warehouses for detention centers!
Public opposition to these expanded detention centers is only continuing to grow. This is the time to speak out and demand an END to this violent campaign against our neighbors. That means:
- Congress must do everything in its power to empower city and state elected leaders to oppose ICE taking over warehouses in their communities.
- State and local officials must explore every avenue, from legislation to zoning laws to putting pressure on developers, in order to prevent the sale of warehouses to DHS and ICE.
- Residents in neighborhoods with proposed sites must speak out and put pressure on local government to stop projects.
The administration’s process for amassing these warehouses also flies in the face of our laws. Maryland’s attorney general just filed a lawsuit to stop the unlawful construction of a massive detention center in Washington County—a major project conducted without the requisite environmental review, public participation, or state consultation.7
We already know that DHS has a disturbing history of creating unsafe conditions for people being detained. Last summer, hundreds of people faced potential diseases from swarms of mosquitoes, dangerous flooding conditions, and limited access to water while detained at the inhumane Everglades Detention Camp in Florida.8,9 The camp has also prevented people from meeting with legal representation—a brazen disregard for due process laws and democracy.10
Instead of investing in health care or education, the Trump administration wants to funnel billions more to detain people being snatched out of their cars, from their workplaces, and in front of their children. We have a responsibility to do everything in our power to stop Trump’s cruel immigration policies from expanding—and we must hold our elected officials accountable for not intervening, too.
Across the country, communities and elected officials have successfully pushed back against ICE detention projects. Add your name to make it clear that we OPPOSE detention centers being built in our backyards!
Thanks for all you do.

That’s the number of school shootings in the U.S. between January 1, 2026, and February 17, 2026. 6 school shootings in just 48 days.
78.
That’s the total number of school shootings that took place in the U.S. in 2025.
Too many lives lost. Too many lives changed forever. Too little action.
We can imagine a country without gun violence. A world where kids don’t have to practice active shooter drills. A world where parents aren’t worried about sending their kids to school.
But the gun lobby is determined to prevent any movement on gun safety, so we must keep organizing to enact change. Pitch in whatever you can now →
Thank you.

Minnesota is stepping up. And it is not happening by accident.
Six months after the mass shooting at Church of the Annunciation in Minneapolis, our members across Minnesota have been organizing, speaking out, and demanding action. They have pushed their leaders to meet the urgency of this moment.
Now, Governor Walz has introduced a bold gun safety package that includes an assault weapons ban and a high-capacity magazine ban.

This is what people power looks like.
Gun violence is the leading cause of death for young people in America. When states invest in prevention and accountability, lives are saved. Our members in Minnesota understood that. They refused to let tragedy fade into silence. They organized until their state responded.
But we cannot stop at one state.
March For Our Lives is building a national movement powered by young people who are exposing the gun lobby and pushing for real legislative action. The same energy driving change in Minnesota is what we are scaling across the country.
We are proud of our Minnesota members. And we are just getting started.

Over the weekend, the Trump administration attacked Iran without Congressional approval and the death toll is already over 500. In the days ahead, we as white Americans must do whatever we can in our power to demand: No War with Iran! Use this tool to tell Congress to pass the War Powers Resolution to stop Trump’s massive overreach and then join a protest near you.
We know that wars do not make any of us safer. They benefit a tiny number of people whose billionaire agenda will cause death and destruction across the Middle East, fuel racism and Islamophobia here at home, and come at the cost of millions of Americans who are barely making ends meet.
This week makes it clear: authoritarianism here in the US has deadly implications across the entire globe. This is a time to take action to stop the war in Iran and to recommit to the work we have here at home: building a massive resistance person by person, community by community, from the ballot box to city blocks– to take on our responsibility as white people in the fight of our lifetimes.
Join us on Wednesday at 8 pm ET for the launch of our training series, “Block by Block,” to plug in with SURJ and do your part this year. If you watched from afar as the community in Minneapolis came together to organize against ICE and thought, “I wish I had that here!” this is your chance to learn how to build neighborhood organizing infrastructure that is connected to our broader movement for change.
Whether you’re a seasoned organizer or this is your first action, Block by Block will be a space where anyone can get the skills they need to show up in 2026 to build progressive power, stop MAGA, and move more white people into a movement of working people fighting for our families, not the agendas of oil barons or tech billionaires.
As Anne Braden wrote: “The real danger today comes from the people in high places, from the halls of Congress to the boardrooms of big corporations, who are telling the white people if their taxes are eating up their paychecks, it’s not because of a bloated military budget, but because of government programs that benefit Black people…Our problem is the people in power who are creating a scapegoat mentality.”

In 2026, our movements have already delivered powerful blows to the Trump administration’s billionaire agenda, and we’re in the best position yet to stop their death march and weaken their power. Millions of white people are defecting and rising up– it’s our role to be ready to move them away from authoritarianism and into movements of resistance.
To be ready to accomplish all of this, next week on Wednesday, March 4 at 8 pm ET, we’re launching our newest training program: Block by Block Training and Action Series, to equip SURJ members to organize our communities to get into formation to do our part.
Block by Block is our national campaign for 2026 to 1) mobilize members into mass actions like marches and local ICE resistance, 2) elect working-class champions and block MAGA candidates, and 3) grow our power by bringing more and more people into our movement.
In this training, you’ll learn everything you need to implement this strategy. We’ll train on recruitment and building a local movement, strategic noncooperation, building electoral power, and more. We’ll provide all the structure, toolkits, and guidance you need to plug into our national program and make a real difference– block by block.
The MAGA agenda wants to use this year to elect more of their people to rig elections, destroy what’s left of our social safety net, deport hundreds of thousands more of our neighbors, and ensure that Wall Street and Silicon Valley overlords have free rein to take advantage of us all.
Solidarity is rising– and if we keep it up, we’ll not only stop their strategy, we’ll have a mass movement of people who are fighting for not a return to the status quo, but an entirely new vision for this country.
Let’s use the momentum we’ve built to take a big, bold, beautiful shot together– can you join us?

Texas Democrats just made history.
More than 2.2 million votes tallied in the Democratic primary — making this the party’s strongest primary turnout in decades.
And Latinos in Texas were decisive.
In majority-Latino counties like Hidalgo, Starr, Cameron, and El Paso, 460,438 people voted in the Democratic primary — a 149% increase from the 2022 election. Turnout in these counties surged from 21% to 216% from 2022.
This isn’t a trend. It’s a movement.
We can’t let up now. This moment has been years in the making, built by local organizers across Texas and fueled by national support, including Voto Latino’s work online and on the ground since day one.
Since 2012, we’ve helped register 385,563 Texas voters, including 53,437 in 2024 alone. We’ve fought voter suppression in the courts. And we’ve won.
Now we’re going further.
Our Texas blueprint is ready for launch. For 2026, we’ve identified three of the most competitive congressional districts in Texas — seats critical to defeating the Republican House majority. The path to victory runs through the Latino community. We’re already on 15 campuses across the state through our VL On-Campus program, building the next generation of Latino leaders and turning first-time voters into consistent ones.
Latinos are 25%+ of registered voters in Texas. Imagine what’s possible when we close the registration gap entirely.
This is the moment to invest — before November, before the window closes.
Every dollar goes toward registering voters, fighting suppression, and building the Latino political power that can flip Texas — and most importantly, transform American politics for a generation.
This work is bigger than us. It’s about building lasting power and shaping the future of Latinos in Texas and across the country.
Thank you for your support.

Nida Allam came within 1% of taking down incumbent Rep. Valerie Foushee.
Let that sink in.
In the last week alone, over $2 million in special interest money flooded the race to defeat her — and she was still only 1,200 votes from victory.
Margins this razor-thin tell us something important: Voters are paying attention, and they’re done settling for politics as usual. They want bold progressives who will fight relentlessly for working families, who won’t bow to corporate greed, and who refuse to back down, even when the odds are stacked against them.
This wasn’t just a close race, it was a warning. It’s proof that when young, forward-thinking progressives step up to challenge the status quo, they don’t just make noise, they shake up the entire system.
Asleep-at-the-wheel incumbents who think they can coast through another cycle on corporate cash and name recognition should consider themselves put on notice. Fearless fighters like Nida who will meet this moment with courage and moral clarity are the future of the Democratic Party.
And we did exactly what Leaders We Deserve was built to do — challenge complacent incumbents and force them to fight for their seat, make this race contentious, and show that people-power can move the needle, even against massive dark money spending.
We aren’t going to stop fighting. Every progressive candidate that runs and every dollar we raise is another chance to continue building the movement we need to win real solutions for working families and reshape the Democratic Party.
Thank you for your support in helping us make our party better. Challenges like this are never easy but few things worth doing ever are and your support makes our work possible.
Thank you,
David Hogg

Government Shutdown
The government shutdown is underway with seemingly no end in sight.
The ACA’s future hangs in the balance.
Each day, more and more headlines appear that show our administration is fracturing.
But the American people are standing strong. They’re ready for change. And we’re ready to help.Visit our website to learn how you can get involved.
Policy: Housing is
a Human Right
In 2024, a record-breaking number of people experienced homelessness. In 2023, nearly 70% of Americans reported being ‘very concerned’ about the cost of housing. The American people care about this crisis and want it addressed.
A nation cannot call itself just while millions sleep on the streets. The housing crisis is not an accident—it is the result of policy choices that put profit over people. Skyrocketing rents, unchecked speculation, and a system that treats shelter as a commodity instead of a necessity have left too many without a place to call home.
The solution is clear: Guarantee housing as a human right. Invest in affordable housing, strengthen tenant protections, and curb corporate landlords who hoard empty units while families struggle. No one should be homeless in a country of abundance.
Action must follow principle. Demand rent control, public housing investment, and policies that prioritize people over profit. Support leaders who fight for fair housing, not those who serve developers.
This is not charity—it is justice. A stable home is the foundation of health, education, and opportunity. When people are housed, communities thrive, crime decreases, and economies grow. The right to shelter is as fundamental as the right to food or clean water.
A roof over one’s head should not be a privilege—it should be a guarantee. End the housing crisis. Secure the right to a home for all.

“Civic Power” Report: Organizing Is How We Win Elections and Pass Bold Policies

P.S.– We want to hear from YOU. How would these new document requirements impact your family? Share your story here.
