Tri-City Democrats – Friday, May 8, 6:00 PM
Greetings fellow Democrats!
The weather is fine, so let’s have a picnic at the farm for our May event. Friday, May 8, 6pm at 4501 W Lattin Ct, West Richland, WA. There’s some chance it will be cool, but we’ll have a fire pit and patio heaters and blankets to take the edge off. Bring a hoody! Come gather with like-minded folks and share some fellowship, food and beverages. Bring a dish to share, and Tri-City Democrats will provide utensils and plates, and napkins. We’ll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group.
Our program is to be announced, but we’ll have some announcements and we will have ‘Hate Has no Home Here’ signs available.

Today we…
Support new arrivals through education, relationships and community so they can thrive in their new home.
In the future, we will…
Create a community of open hearts, helping hands and supportive systems where strangers become friends and we all thrive.
In the United States, we take it for granted that children will attend school and learn how to read. For many of the students in B5’s adult English classes, however, that wasn’t true. B5 is their first school!!
With the help of teachers, dedicated volunteers, and a lot of hard work on the part of the students, five of our beginning students graduated to level one in March. Learning to read as an adult is very challenging, but these students are used to overcoming challenges.

If you can read this, thank the people in your life who helped you learn, and consider how you might help adults in our community who never had the opportunity to learn to read. You can become a monthly donor here and provide essential funding for B5 programs, or consider becoming a volunteer by submitting an application here.
Thank you for all that you do to support B5’s work and making our community a welcoming space for all.

Thank you to all of you who give your time and money, so refugees and immigrants can find welcome at the doors of B5. Your donation in any amount allows us to support our programs to help newly arrived refugees THRIVE in our community. Will you join us?

Today we…
Support new arrivals through education, relationships and community so they can thrive in their new home.
In the future, we will…
Create a community of open hearts, helping hands and supportive systems where strangers become friends and we all thrive.
Do you remember learning to read? What would your life be like if you’d never had that opportunity?
Many of the students in our B5 classes are learning to read for the first time, or never really mastered reading when they were learning English. According to the Barbara Bush Foundation, 19% of adults in Benton County and 37% in Franklin County have low literacy skills, limiting their access to employment, education, and economic mobility. This helps explain why 13.4% of adults in Benton and Franklin counties have not completed a high school diploma or GED, almost double the state rate of 7.7% (Benton-Franklin Trends).

Adults with low literacy skills don’t see themselves as learners and often give up trying. Language learning and literacy go hand in hand, and learning to read in a language that is unfamiliar is even more challenging for adults than it is for kids. For this reason, a safe, encouraging environment is important to keep students working toward their goals.
At B5, we’re thankful for staff and volunteers who work diligently and persistently with students to help them on the road to success. They are equipping our students with the skills they need to become citizens, complete job applications, and get better paying jobs.

In the past, most of our students were new arrival refugees, and B5 received state funding to support them on their educational journey. Today, fewer than half of our students qualify for state funded support. More than ever, we look to our community to join us in the work by volunteering and investing in our students.
Thank you to all of you who give your time and money, so refugees and immigrants can find welcome at the doors of B5. Your donation in any amount allows us to support our programs to help newly arrived refugees THRIVE in our community. Will you join us?

FAQ from A Better Richland
Richland registered voters will vote this November to update the Richland City Council election process to be like the rest of Washington’s First-Class Cities, Pasco, and Kennewick.
Currently all seven members of the Richland council are elected “at-large.” They can live anywhere in the city. A vote to change the city charter would mean five council members would have to be elected from the districts where they live and two would still be elected “at-large”. Each of the five proposed districts would have approximately 12,000 residents. An interactive map on our website can show you in which district you would live.

Dear Friend,
Despite the tragedies we witnessed in Minnesota, and despite the human rights abuses we are seeing at ICE detention facility Delaney Hall right now, Republicans in Congress are trying to pass legislation this week that would pour an additional $70 billion in taxpayer dollars into ICE and CBP with no oversight or constraints for three years! If passed, Congress will have given away its authority to put any constraints on ICE for the entire Trump administration! Take Action Now!
This legislation comes at a moment when detained immigrants, our neighbors, coworkers, parents, and grandparents across the country, are launching hunger and labor strikes to protest inhumane conditions inside detention facilities, [1] including at Delaney Hall here in New Jersey.
People detained at Delaney Hall have reported being served spoiled food, denied access to necessary medical care, confined in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, [2] subjected to scalding-hot showers that caused burns, [3] and compelled to work for as little as $1 a day, or at times, with no compensation at all. [4]
I have also watched with alarm as my neighbors, faith leaders, advocates, and community members peacefully protesting outside the facility have been met with aggressive enforcement tactics.[5] ICE agents pepper-sprayed demonstrators and observers, including U.S. Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ) [6], and detained a U.S. military veteran who was serving as a volunteer street medic. [7] U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has called for the facility to be shut down. [8]
What makes this proposal even more troubling is that ICE and CBP already have more than $100 billion in unspent funds, with little transparency or accountability in how those resources are being used. Existing funding levels alone could sustain both agencies through the fourth quarter of 2027. [9] They do not need another cent.
Instead of investing in solutions that help families thrive, this legislation doubles down on detention, deportation, and family separation. It would expand harmful immigration enforcement policies while diverting resources away from programs that help people afford everyday life. It would also pull workers out of critical industries—including agriculture, construction, health care, child care, home care, and food service—further worsening affordability challenges for families and communities across the country.
Thank you for all that you do for our communities!
– Nadia

Dear Friend,
Early childhood development support services like Early Intervention have been a lifeline for millions of babies, toddlers, and families (mine included!) over the years. Yet right now, the Trump administration is moving to reduce and eliminate these critical services for children with disabilities as part of their ongoing efforts to undermine the needs of our nation’s families in favor of billionaires, corporations, and a ridiculous ballroom.
Tell Republican leaders in Congress: protect and fully fund Early Intervention!
Early Intervention is a federal grant program implemented by individual states under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that serves children ages 0-3. It connects infants, toddlers, and their families with appropriate developmental supports before school entry, [1] creating a strong foundation for their future in educational environments and beyond. [2] The most rigorous evidence suggests that Early Intervention services can improve children’s outcomes in areas including cognitive development, language/communication skills, behavior, and motor skills. [3] Other evidence suggests positive outcomes for parental health and wellbeing, such as maternal self-confidence and role satisfaction. [4] The bottom line is that early intervention not only provides critical developmental support to our littlest learners but also supports moms, parents, and families as well.
Early Intervention services were a crucial resource for my children and me. When my son, Zakir, turned two, his pediatrician suggested Early Intervention when it became clear that he had delays in different areas of his development. I knew that I would take whatever steps my son needed for him to thrive, but I also felt uncertainty and fear as to what the future held for him. Early Intervention ended up not only supporting my son to reach critical developmental goals, they also empowered me as the mother of a neurodivergent child. Program therapists provided weekly speech and developmental intervention services for my son for a year and a half, and during these sessions, they also taught me strategies to incorporate in our day-to-day that helped us BOTH. My son is now thriving in middle school. My second child also received Early Intervention, and just like his big brother, he is excelling socially, emotionally, and mentally. Above is a photo of Zakir and me during our Early Intervention years!
Early intervention has helped millions of families and children like mine over the past few decades, and according to the latest available data, in 2024, approximately 458,920 infants and toddlers aged 0-2 received early intervention services. [5] However, after decades of changing so many lives for the better, this program is now at risk due to President Trump’s FY27 budget, which proposes consolidating part B 619 funds of the IDEA into a single formula grant to states. This would effectively eliminate dedicated funding for personnel training and development of the therapists and staff who deliver these critical services directly to the babies and toddlers who need them. This consolidation of funds could also result in less funding available to infants and toddlers overall as part of the IDEA program, dismantling public education and disability services for babies, toddlers, and children throughout the country.
This is completely unacceptable. CLICK NOW to tell Congress NO to funneling critical funds that children and toddlers with disabilities rely on to a wasteful ballroom and further tax cuts for billionaires!
The Early Intervention program helps provide hundreds of thousands of children and families access to a future where ALL children can have a chance to grow and thrive. Any cuts or moves to eliminate programs like this are simply unconscionable. This is why speaking up together and taking action matters!
Thank you for joining us to protect the services children with disabilities depend on.

LWVWA Resisting Threats to Democracy—Action Needed

As you read this, our democracy is under threat here in Washington state. And the League of Women Voters of Washington (LWVWA) is taking action—every day—to defend it.
IN THE COURTS: We are fighting to protect voter registration rights nationwide. In a key case against U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, LWVWA submitted a sworn statement opposing efforts to block groups like the League from registering new citizens at naturalization ceremonies. This fight continues—and so do we.
IN THE LEGISLATURE: This session, LWVWA tracked 68 democracy-related bills and helped pass eight critical laws to safeguard voters and elections—strengthening protections against discrimination, stopping bad-faith voter challenges, and securing sensitive voter data.
IN OUR COMMUNITIES: We led a successful “decline to sign” campaign to stop Initiative 126, a proposal that would have made it harder to register and stay registered to vote. Now, we’re pushing back against I-500—another attempt to create those same barriers.
This is what defending democracy looks like. It’s urgent. It’s ongoing. And it works.
But we can’t do it without you.
Democracy requires constant effort—and your support makes that possible. This GiveBIG, please make a gift to LWVWA to help defend and strengthen democracy in Washington.

For more than 105 years, the League has stood up for fair elections, protected the right to vote, and helped people make their voices heard. Here in Washington, our 20 local Leagues continue that work every day.
These are challenging times for our country, and the League’s steady, nonpartisan leadership is more important than ever. We know what it takes to protect our democracy, and we know we can do it — together.
Together WE WILL.
Show up.
Speak out.

This week, Congress approved another $70 billion in funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), for the explicit purpose of expanding detention, surveillance, and deportation operations.
This small number of lawmakers has now handed immigration enforcement agencies $240 billion in less than a year—nearly a quarter trillion in taxpayer dollars.
Across the state and all over the country, millions of people are having to choose between rent, groceries, or healthcare. Instead, Congress chose to divert critical resources to increased surveillance on our communities, to more detention centers, and raids in our neighborhoods that trample on our human rights in the process.
Here in Washington we know what the effects of this decision look like: the Deportation Defense Hotline has received thousands of reports of family separation, family members detailing how their loved ones needed emergency medical attention after encounters with immigration enforcement agents. With the weight always landing hardest on transgender, queer, Black, Indigenous, and poor migrants.
Nobody asked for this. Fewer than 300 people ignored the will of the majority and made this choice because they are afraid.
They’re afraid because they know the power of organized people.
We’ve all watched as communities like ours step up to protect each other. Thousands of Rapid Response volunteers are documenting violations of civil and constitutional rights and supporting families after detentions occur. Accompaniment volunteers are making sure no one has to face immigration court alone, and a community-sourced Fair Fight Bond Fund reunites families separated by detention.
You don’t spend a quarter of a trillion dollars to stop people who are powerless. Our power lies in the continued choice we make to support each other.
They are betting a quarter trillion dollars on us being afraid.
We’re betting on each other.
In solidarity,
The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network
[ENGLISH ABOVE]

Ten years ago queer and transgender immigrants came together during a time of growing fear and uncertainty for immigrant communities to launch WAISN because no one else was coming to save us.
If you believe in this work, you know it takes resources to keep this movement going. Please donate today to help us build the next 10 years of immigrant justice for our communities.
[Español Abajo]
In case you hadn’t heard, the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network is turning ten this year!
We came together in 2016 during a time of growing fear and uncertainty for immigrant communities to create WAISN because no one else was coming to save us. We chose to act on the collective power of our communities, not as saviors but as siblings: a statewide coalition of directly impacted queer and transgender immigrants, organizers, unions, youth groups, faith communities, service providers, and immigrant- and refugee-led organizations who refused to let others dictate our future.
For a decade, this network has been led and run by people who share the lived experiences of the communities we organize with—supporting our ability to protect one another, take action together, and have a say in determining our future.
We’re celebrating WAISN’s 10th anniversary year with the theme Horizons — and to mark the moment, we’re refreshing our logo and visual identity everywhere we show up in 2026!
For us, Horizons are not abstract. They are the communities we have not yet reached, the policies we have not yet won, the relationships we have not yet built, and the people who will carry this work forward in ways we cannot yet imagine.
Horizons connect us across distance—across borders, cultures, languages, histories, and lived experiences—reminding us that the future of our shared horizon is shaped by what we are actively creating together today.
Over the next few months, we’re going to share stories and reflections and celebrate some of our biggest wins from the last ten years. The campaigns we’ve led and joined, the critical infrastructure our communities have built together like the Deportation Defense Hotline, the Fair Fight Bond Fund, and the Resource Finder, the lessons we’ve learned, and the future we’re still working toward.
As we celebrate this milestone, we honor every person who has contributed their time, labor, leadership, courage, care, resources, and presence to the immigrant justice movement in Washington over the last ten years. This celebration belongs to all of us.
Together, we’ve persevered through so much, and we honor the joy that has carried us every step of the way. In a moment when immigrant communities are living in an environment of fear and criminalization, boldly celebrating our shared dignity is revolutionary. Our joy is a political statement that not only are we here, but we are also joyous together.
Keep an eye out for more of our Horizons series, coming to your inbox and across our social media channels on Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and LinkedIn throughout the year.
Your voice, your membership, and your participation are part of what carries this movement forward. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or just joined last week, we’re stronger because you’re with us.
Looking toward the horizon together,
The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network

Ten years ago queer and transgender immigrants came together during a time of growing fear and uncertainty for immigrant communities to launch WAISN because no one else was coming to save us.
If you believe in this work, you know it takes resources to keep this movement going. Please donate today to help us build the next 10 years of immigrant justice for our communities.

Help us celebrate the Class of 2026 next Saturday!
As the Class of 2026 gears up for their last full weekend together in Spokane, I wanted to share some exciting updates about next Saturday’s graduation! Surrounded by the breathtaking peaks of our Washington landscape, we’ll come together to celebrate this remarkable class and honor the many individuals who have made it special.
We’re thrilled to have Shasti Conrad, Chair of the Washington Democratic Party, as this year’s keynote speaker, and Xavier Ajeto will also deliver a speech on behalf of the Class of 2026.
We’ll take a moment to thank the outgoing board members for their dedicated service over the years.
Get ready to celebrate and honor some fantastic awards:
- This year, we’re introducing the Board Member of the Year award, shining a spotlight on Meadow Johnson ’09 for her 12 years of outstanding service – her contributions for over a decade are as inspiring as our Cascade peaks!
- We’re also excited to present the Community Partner of the Year award to the Washington Education Association, whose steadfast support and partnership with WAIDF over the past year have truly made a difference.
- Finally, a big congratulations to Jac Archer ’18, our Alumni of the Year, whose ongoing advocacy for Spokane, especially for immigrants, continues to fight for civil rights and dignity for all.
On behalf of Landon, our Program Director, the board of directors, we all look forward to seeing you at a festive and celebratory evening on June 13, filled with good food and drinks, camaraderie, seeing friends, and perhaps making new ones, and celebrating the Class of 2026!
-Emily

Thank you for making Campaign & Elections Weekend a Success!
This past weekend, the WAIDF network – fellows, alumni, partners, and friends – came together for an incredible Campaign & Elections weekend.
Speakers covered everything from the state of elections, organizational efforts, and the nuts and bolts of running a campaign, to communications and messaging, fundraising, endorsements, mailers, and field efforts. We were honored to share the day and connect with a broader network of folks doing good work in communities across Washington state. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for a day of learning.
On Sunday, the Class of 2026 had a full day of learning where they heard from Mark Rupp, Director of External Relations, at The Earth Commons at Georgetown University, who shared his career journey and experience serving Washington State in Washington, D.C. We caught up with Beth Lindsay (Class of 1999) from Invest Washington Now to hear what’s next in the fight for taxing the rich and getting millionaires to pay their fair share. We also heard from Elise Orlick from Fair Vote on proportional representation and their work to create a more representative Democracy.
Fellows ended the day with an insightful and impactful tour of Little Saigon with Vy Nguyen, Class of 2019, and Strategic Advisor at the Port of Seattle, and Huy Pham, Executive Director of APIAHiP and historic preservation advocate for Asian & Pacific Islander American communities. These two Friends of Little Saigon Board Members discussed the history of the neighborhood, the impacts of freeway redlining, and the organizations and communities that make the Little Saigon and Seattle Chinatown-International District thrive.
We look forward to seeing you at the Class of 2026 graduation on June 13!

Save the date – Saturday, June 13 – for Class of 2026 Graduation!
Alongside celebrating the Class of 2026, we will also recognize two inaugural awards: Board Member of the Year, for exceptional contributions by a board member, and Community Partner of the Year, for outstanding support from a community partner.
Shasti Conrad, Chair of the Washington Democratic Party, will deliver this year’s keynote address. Following her, the Class of 2026 speaker will be introduced, whose name is still pending.

Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day! This day, always the first Friday in June, kicks off Wear Orange weekend. This is a time when gun violence prevention advocates across the country wear orange to honor the victims of gun violence and show support for the gun safety movement.
Wear Orange was started in 2013 after 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed in Chicago just one week after she performed at President Obama’s second inauguration. Her friends and family chose to wear orange—Hadiya’s favorite color and the color hunters wear to protect themselves from gunfire—to honor her life and the tens of thousands of lives lost to gun violence every year. Since then, the gun violence prevention movement has carried on their efforts by wearing orange on the first Friday in June.
Here are a couple things you can do:
- If you’re out and wearing orange, make sure to post it on social media! Be sure to use #WearOrange and tag @allianceforgunresponsibility
- Donate to support our lifesaving work!
We hope you’ll join us in these acts of solidarity. We are so fortunate to be part of such a supportive and effective movement.
Thank you for being a part of it,
The Alliance for Gun Responsibility Team
PS – If you don’t have social media accounts, you can email a photo to press@wagunresponsibility.org and we will share them from our accounts!
ALLIANCE FOR GUN RESPONSIBILITY

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 14th Annual Event, Power in Partnership.
Yesterday was a powerful reminder of what this movement is made of: people who show up, refuse to accept gun violence as inevitable, and keep working toward a safer future for every community. We left feeling grounded in the strength of this community and clear-eyed about the work ahead. Because we know what is possible when we act together.
Gun violence is preventable. Lives can be saved. And every step forward happens because people like you choose to be part of this work.
If you were in the room, thank you for showing up, giving generously, and helping make the afternoon so meaningful. If you missed the event, you can watch the full livestream recording on our YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td1UbCi6a4E
And if you did not get a chance to give, there is still time to make a gift. Your support helps us strengthen the advocacy, education, partnerships, and programs that move Washington closer to a future free from gun violence.
Make a gift today: agraction.org/donate
Thank you again for being part of this movement. We are deeply grateful to do this work alongside you.
With gratitude,
The Alliance for Gun Responsibility

Paid canvassers are collecting signatures on IP26-645 to repeal a tax that would be paid by less than 1% of the wealthiest Washingtonians – just mega-millionaires and billionaires.
Repealing this tax would undo a lot of the hard work you did this session to make our tax code fairer, but let’s be clear about what we would lose if they are successful, and why you should commit to decline to sign their petition.
Eliminating the Millionaires Tax could TAKE AWAY:
- The expansion of the Working Families Tax Credit, which will put cash in the pockets of 1 million low and middle income families.
- The sales tax cuts for over-the-counter medicine, diapers, hygiene and grooming products, saving families hundreds of dollars each year.
- The new B&O tax cuts that apply to the majority of small businesses in WA, giving them the biggest tax cut in state history
- Free school meals for all Washington K-12 students, plus more money for childcare and early learning
- Billions of dollars for education, healthcare, and other essential services
Rolling all of that back for millions of Washingtonians just so some mega-millionaires and billionaires can give themselves a tax cut? We don’t think so.

To go the extra mile, forward this email to a friend or two and help us get the word out about this harmful initiative.
In solidarity,
Ben, Invest in WA Now

Plenty has been written about the mega-millionaires and billionaires who will pay the Millionaires Tax. We’re taking big steps toward fixing our tax code and asking the super rich to pay what they owe, but the payers of this tax are less than 0.5% of the story…
The other 99.5% of the story is how this tax affects everyday Washingtonians. Whether you’re a small business owner seeking a boost from B&O tax cuts, a parent struggling to find child care, or just someone who could use extra cash, the new Millionaires Tax will probably help you.
So what could the Millionaires Tax mean for you personally?. That’s where our quiz comes in.
Let us know in quiz comments what you think. As Lu Hill wrote in the Spokesman-Review, “When everyone pays what they truly owe – including millionaires – our neighbors can access the services and programs they need to build a good life.”
The Millionaires Tax is a step toward a Washington where everyone has that chance. Including you.
In solidarity,
Ben, Invest in WA Now
WHAT’S IN IT FOR US? DIGGING INTO THE MILLIONAIRES TAX AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR 99% OF US.

What’s harder to measure than all of these benefits is something that’s just as important: the millionaires tax means a state tax code that is more just and equitable and that better funds our state budget. Our state budget is a moral document. It reflects the values of the people who live here.
More – Lu Hill, The Spokesman-Review
IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE GREAT WEALTH, BUT SEATTLE’S ‘WEALTH WALK’ MAKES YOU FEEL IT

After walking a mile, we are billionaires, but we’re nowhere near Gates and his neighbors. To become richer than Elon Musk, richest man in the world, by my count we’d need to walk clear across the lake, over the mountains, past Montana’s border.
At the end, Purcell reminds me about that dollar he gave me. He tells me to keep it.
“A dollar is no longer a useful unit of measurement when we think about the super wealthy,” Purcell said. “ But every dollar has the same amount of power as every other dollar, and what we choose to do with that money shapes our neighborhoods, shapes our cities, shapes our world.”
REPORT: WA IS AMONG THE MOST EXPENSIVE STATES FOR INFANT CHILDCARE CENTER SPOTS

Heidi Bugbee, executive director of Generations Early Learning & Family Center in Bellingham, said she’s noticed families will sacrifice a consistent care schedule due to a lack of affordability. Some might ask the grandparents or their neighbors to babysit on certain weekdays because they can’t cover the expense of enrolling their kid five days a week. She encourages people to advocate for Washington to expand the number of families who qualify for subsidies. Some may decide that staying home with their kids makes more fiscal sense than going to work, which affects the broader economy, she said.

WASHINGTON STATE’S BUDGET HAS BEEN SHRINKING, NOT GROWING, DESPITE STATEMENTS TO THE CONTRARY BY FORMER ELECTED OFFICIALS

There have been times when we increased state expenditures, and those were followed by times when we cut them. For example, after revenue fell in the late aughts, during the Great Recession, the Legislature and Governor Gregoire used severe austerity measures to balance the budget. They did not raise taxes on the wealthy, as their successors have done. Consequently, the state limped along with fewer dollars from a tax code that remained antiquated, regressive, and behind the growth of the economy.
Their decisions left us in a hole and we’re still digging out of it.
More – Andrew Villeneuve, The Cascadia Advocate
THE CASE FOR CALIFORNIA’S WEALTH TAX

This arrangement violates basic principles of fairness, deprives the government of revenue it needs for public services and fuels wealth concentration. Overwhelming wealth becomes power — power to influence the direction of corporate behemoths, power to sway society through donations and media ownership, power to steer politics through unlimited campaign contributions to super PACs. Elon Musk’s recent adventures in the executive branch, after spending hundreds of millions of dollars to help elect Donald Trump, demonstrate how quickly concentrated wealth can transmute into political control.

FERGUSON VOWS TO VETO ANY EXPANSION OF WA ‘MILLIONAIRES TAX’

“One more thing voters should know: so long as I am Governor I will veto ANY attempt to lower the threshold or raise the rate of this tax — we are asking those who make the most to pay a little more, and providing relief to workers and small businesses. Let’s keep it that way,” Ferguson wrote.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the record breaking support we received from this community at this year’s annual gala. Together, we raised over $1.6 million dollars to continue defending and advancing immigrant rights in the months and years to come. At the event, I shared that while the past year has been a challenging one, we are making a difference because this community refuses to look away, refuses to stay silent, and refuses to accept injustice.
Over the past year, we have expanded our reach and deepened our impact. Our Community Outreach team has connected thousands of people with critical information. And in 2025, we reached over 25,000 people through community outreach efforts.
Our staff and pro bono volunteers, day after day, stand beside community members in immigration detention who are facing some of the most isolating and unjust conditions imaginable, and are working to ensure our clients can seek the protections for which they are eligible. At the event, we shared a video highlighting this ongoing work through interviews with our staff, pro bono attorney Amy Bowles, and community member Tsimba Phukuta – which you can view at this link.
Through our work and partnerships, we are building something bigger than any one organization—an ecosystem of support that stretches from local communities, to the entire state of Washington, and across the country.
Together, we will continue this work. Together, we will be ready to respond and meet this moment with courage. And together, we will ensure that our communities are not only protected, but that they can thrive – because we all deserve to thrive. Thank you for your continued support. We also invite you to view photos from photographer Tawfiq Abdulaziaz at this link, and photobooth pictures from the event here.
Teresa Zepeda Sosa’s Story
We were honored to have keynote speaker Teresa Zepeda Sosa share her story at our gala this year. Teresa is a former NWIRP client, a small business owner, and one of the founding members of Parque Padrinos – a grassroots organization that celebrates and empowers the South Wenatchee and surrounding communities. In addition to these accomplishments, Teresa is a powerful immigrant rights advocate and social justice leader in her community. For those of you who were unable to attend, we are including a shortened version of her speech at this link.

USCIS Announces New Policy Limiting Adjustment of Status (AOS) Applications
Last week, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced a new policy aimed at limiting one of the most common and important pathways to lawful permanent residence—adjustment of status–an application filed from within the United States. Once again, in pursuit of its anti-immigrant agenda, the Trump administration seeks to erase legal pathways enacted by Congress, claiming that adjustment of status is a “loophole” that should be fixed. However, adjustment of status is a statutory benefit, enacted by Congress precisely to ensure that families are not needlessly separated and that employers are not needlessly deprived of essential employees for months or even years. Moreover, in arguing that applicants should be forced to return to their home countries to finalize the process, the administration cynically sidesteps that many applicants, if forced to leave the United States, will face additional barriers that would render them ineligible to return to the United States for ten years. The new policy flouts the current laws and is meant to once again intimidate, confuse, and create chaos. We are currently working with partners to ensure that this new policy is exposed for what it is–an unlawful effort to ignore controlling laws designed to provide a clear path for family and employment visas.

We also have another Immigration Updates Webinar scheduled for Tuesday, June 23 at noon. You can register for this webinar here.
Thank you very much for your continued support. We are grateful to have you as part of our community.

Northwest Immigrant Rights Project

Every day in this country, immigrants are expected to represent themselves in immigration court. Unlike individuals in the criminal court system, immigrants facing removal or deportation proceedings in immigration court are generally not appointed an attorney to represent them.
In these proceedings, they are asked to explain what they have lived through, why they are afraid, and what will happen if they are forced to return. The questions are complex and intrusive, often re-triggering past traumas while actively creating new ones. The setting is unfamiliar and highly formal. The language is often not their own.
And the stakes could not be higher.
This is happening every day, in courtrooms across the country.
This includes children, youth, and, yes, even infants who must represent themselves.
At NWIRP, we serve people across this harmful and unjust system—adults, families, and young people—working to ensure no one is left to navigate their immigration cases alone.
But for infants, children, and youth, the stakes take on a different weight.
In our Unaccompanied Children Program (UCP)—which is one of two dedicated programs at NWIRP focused on children and youth—24 attorneys and legal advocates work directly with roughly 550 young clients each year. They prepare them, represent them, and remain a steady presence of support through every stage of their case.
But that work is becoming increasingly unstable, as UCP is a federally-funded program now operating under the Trump administration and its aggressive new immigration enforcement model: one that is built on mass detention, aggressive inland raids, and the utilization of third countries for removals.
Currently, funding for this program is only secured through July 31. Beyond that, there is no clear long-term path. Thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children and youth will be impacted nationwide, and the consequences will be immediate.
Let me be clear in stating this: NWIRP will not step away from those already in our care. Every one of them will be supported through the full duration of their case, so long as resources allow.
But the pressure on this work is intensifying, and the gaps between what our clients need and what systems provide continues to widen.
Let me also be clear in stating that community support will matter more in the months and years ahead.
It’s imperative that immigration legal defense not be under-resourced, especially in today’s climate, so I invite you to make a donation today to support our collective efforts to protect others.
If you choose to act alongside our growing community of supporters, your donation will help ensure NWIRP’s ability to remain nimble while continuing to defend community members of all ages—right now, and without interruptions.
Thank you for making this work possible. With you and so many others on our side, we can meet the challenges of today while helping build a more just system in its place.

With deep gratitude and determination,

Malou Chávez (she/her/ella)
Executive Director
P.S. I hope you will make plans to join us at our next Immigration Update webinar on Thursday, May 21 at 5 p.m. (English) and 5:45 p.m. (Spanish) for the latest on policy changes, community impact, and how to protect one another—plus time for Q&A. Register here.

Important announcement from FAN

A recent KUOW article shed new light on what measures IL26-001 and IL26-638 could mean for Washington students if they pass this November.
Their reporting confirms what we already know: student athletes seeking to participate in girls’ sports could be required to undergo genital examinations, genetic testing, or blood tests measuring testosterone levels.
Medical professionals and school sports officials note that these requirements would be a significant departure from how Washington has managed school sports participation for years. They also have serious concerns about how these measures would be implemented—and how they would negatively affect accessibility.
Dr. Grace Shih, a family medical doctor, warned that students in rural communities or those living without regular access to healthcare could face hurdles that prevent them from playing school sports at all.
All of this comes despite the fact that the Office of Superintendent is aware of only 5-10 transgender student athletes among more than 200,000 student athletes competing across Washington.
It’s unfortunately crystal clear what is happening here. MAGA mega-donor Brian Heywood may claim these ballot measures are about “fairness” and “safety” in girls’ sports, but in reality, this is about forcing his own personal conservative agenda in our state, even if that means marginalizing trans youth and adding barriers to playing school sports.
The stakes for Washington’s youth could not be clearer this November. Our job is to ensure every Washington voter understands the stakes for students and the real-world consequences that we will all feel.
Thank you,
No Hate HQ

NO HATE in WA State is a campaign of Washington parents, medical professionals, teachers, students, and community members standing against ballot measures IL26-001 and IL26-638 that would endanger Washington students and hurt our schools.

My name is Shannon McCann. I’m a middle school special education teacher and a proud WEA union member. As this school year comes to an end, I join thousands of educators in applauding the accomplishments of our students, from pre-k to college!
Every student deserves a safe, supportive, and well-resourced public school where they can learn, grow, and succeed. As a public school educator, it is both my purpose and my responsibility to provide the best learning opportunities for every child in our classrooms and communities.
Instead of addressing real challenges, these ballot measures, IL26-001 and IL26-638, make things worse for our students, families, educators, and schools.
Teachers are being asked to do more with less while facing growing challenges like:
• Inadequate school funding
• A lack of support for special education services
• Increasing class sizes and caseloads
• Rising student behavioral and mental health needs
Ballot measures IL26-001 and IL26-638 would create new confusion, bureaucracy, and costly burdens. Worst of all, these add stress and harm to students and families who are already navigating more than their fair share in today’s climate.
Many educators already spend hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets on school supplies, food, and basic necessities for students. Instead of alleviating these serious issues, these poorly written initiatives would add even more strain by creating unnecessary paperwork, unrealistic deadlines, and administrative hurdles that pull time and resources away from teaching and learning.
Our children would suffer the consequences.
Our public schools should be focused on supporting ALL students—not navigating the expensive fallout from harmful political initiatives.
Since 1889, educators across Washington have proudly stood alongside students, parents, and communities to advocate for strong public schools and a brighter future for every student. Today, that work continues.
Please join us in voting NO on IL26-001 and IL26-638.
Thank you,
Shannon McCann

Indivisible Rural Program [2021 WORKING DOC]

Hello Indivisible Red & Rural Caucus,
Thank you again to everyone who joined our first Red & Rural Caucus call of 2026. It was wonderful to connect with organizers from across the country and spend time thinking about the work ahead. During the call, we shared updates on what’s happening at Indivisible, reflected on insights from our 2025 caucus survey, and discussed how rural organizers can plug into the No Kings campaign and upcoming mobilizations. Check out the recording below.
NO KINGS 3 Host Resources
As you know, we’re gearing up for No Kings 3 on March 28th, and many of you will be hosting rallies in your communities. Based on the feedback from your survey responses, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help make your event a success. Check them out below.
Coming Up
Our next cal will be on April 14th at 7:30 PM ET. We’ll hear from rural No Kings hosts about lessons learned from their events, share practical tools for sustaining rural organizing and expanding local networks, and reflect on next steps for building community power. We can’t wait to share this space with you!
In Solidarity,

Hello Indivisible Red & Rural Caucus,
As February comes to a close, we celebrate Black history and its deep roots in rural communities, from farming and land stewardship to labor organizing, mutual aid, faith leadership, and civic engagement. These often-overlooked stories show how Black people have shaped rural life and democracy for generations and remind us of the power of organized communities, power we will carry into our work together in 2026.
First Red and Rural Caucus Call of 2026
We didn’t get a chance to connect in February, but we’re looking forward to seeing everyone next month!
Our next Red and Rural Caucus call will be a little different. We’re meeting on Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 PM ET, a change from our usual schedule to avoid conflicting with all the No Kings 3 trainings happening during the week.
The session will be facilitated by our Campaigns Director, Gracey, a fresh face to guide our conversation on the plan for 2026, and Tim, our Mobilization Director, who will explore how members can plug into No Kings while building power in red and rural communities.
Register below to receive reminders. We have many exciting plans for 2026 and can’t wait to see you there!
NO KINGS 3
We’re gearing up for the next round of No Kings protests, and we’d love to hear from you. Let us know whether you’re planning to host a No Kings event in your community, and what kind of support you’d need to make it a success. Whether you’re just starting to think about it or already organizing, we’re here to support you.
Take Action Now
Republicans are once again pushing for a series of voter suppression bills—all variations of their infamous “SAVE Act”, which would create unnecessary obstacles for millions of eligible Americans trying to register to vote.
Congress is negotiating new funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at a moment when ICE and CBP are inflicting real harm on communities. This resource breaks down what we’re demanding and how you can take action.

I spent a few years fundraising, and the thing nobody tells you early enough is this: asking for money is a skill.
Most candidates start intimidated, but you can learn it, practice it, and get genuinely good at it.
That’s what this training is built around.
Join us at 1 pm ET TODAY for a free live virtual training on Fundraising in Action: How to Ask for Money — sponsored by ActBlue!
We’ll walk through:
- How donors get identified and prioritized
- What an effective hard ask actually looks like in practice
- AND you’ll get to practice making and adapting asks in real time
If you’re out there raising money for Democratic candidates or causes, this hour is worth your time.
This training is built for campaigns in the early stages of planning: candidates, campaign managers, and finance staff who are responsible for deciding how the campaign will raise money.
Best,
Kelly Sherman

All Eyes Are On Us
From the desk of Bibek, Senior Digital Strategist
Today the World Cup kicks off here in the US, which got me thinking about what this has meant for past hosts.
In 2002, Japan and South Korea, two nations with a long and painful history, threw the world’s biggest party together, neighbors rather than rivals. In 2010, South Africa became the first African nation to host. Ask a casual fan what they remember and odds are they’ll say vuvuzelas. And then there was Qatar, whose 2022 tournament put its treatment of migrant workers under a spotlight no amount of money could dim.

When all eyes are on you, the world notices what it notices, for better or worse. Now it’s our turn, and the mirror is unflattering. Our transit systems are straining before a single whistle has blown, and our immigration policy is so needlessly punitive that we denied entry to Omar Artan, Africa’s best referee, who was set to become the first Somali official ever to work a World Cup.
The good news is that none of this is inevitable. These aren’t natural disasters or acts of fate. They’re the result of choices made by elected officials at every level of government. We can have better choices. YOU could be the better choice. We can help you get started.

There’s a quaint Southern phrase I know: “when your opponents’ attempts to rig redistricting in their favor get too blatant, regroup and find another avenue to fight back.” It sounds better with a Tennessee drawl.

NDTC Learner Spotlight
NDTC learner Lauren Hensley is a school counselor who decided it was time to bring that perspective to where the decisions get made. She ran for and won her seat in the Cabell County Board of Education in West Virginia to keep student well-being, academic success, and family engagement at the center of every board decision. Hensley takes office July 1, and she’ll be there for every student in Cabell County.

GOP legislatures in southern states are using the opening caused by the weakened Voting Rights Act to choose their own voters. It’s up to us to give them a loud “no thanks.”

On Monday, thousands of people booed right in Donald Trump’s face at Game 3 of the NBA finals. Nobody needed a press release to understand the message. Hey, communication comes in all forms.
That’s why every campaign needs a communications strategy.
Florida man booed by crowd.
Later today, we’re hosting a free virtual training on Planning Your Campaign’s Communications Strategy. This is the session where we get into the nuts and bolts of what a real comms operation looks like at the campaign level.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
- How successful campaigns develop a message and identity that stays cohesive across every channel and conversation
- How to set communications goals that are actually trackable, not just aspirational
- How to build a plan for earned media and rapid response before you need one
If you’re the person on your campaign responsible for how you talk to voters, supporters, and the press (even if that’s just one piece of a much bigger job), this training was built for you.
Register now. This is the kind of session that changes how you think about the work ahead.
Warmly,
Ada Recinos

Human rights are not a game. And yet, the World Cup – ironically, with its slogan of “Football Unites the World” – is becoming a stage for authoritarianism rather than global unity.
From the moment he took office, President Trump has blatantly and relentlessly attacked human rights – from brutal immigration raids and mass deportations to crackdowns on free press and a reckless disregard for due process. Now, his impact has reached the World Cup, where matches are taking place in communities that live in daily fear of racial profiling and deportation because of the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policies.
Along with other members of the Dignity 2026 Coalition and thousands of people like you, we urged FIFA, the international soccer governing body, to pressure the U.S. government to respect the human rights of every person visiting and attending the matches, as well as those working and living in the 11 U.S. host cities.
But rather than leverage its international influence to press for human rights protections amid President Trump’s escalating abuses, FIFA has chosen to remain silent while its president, Gianni Infantino, has aligned himself closer to the Trump administration.
This poses serious risks to many of the fans, journalists, and other visitors who have traveled to the United States for this tournament, particularly those from racial and ethnic minority groups, the LGBTQ community, and the 39 countries the administration has travel bans against, several of which are participating in the World Cup.
This is unacceptable. If you agree, we are urging you to donate now to help the ACLU continue defending human rights and leading the charge against the Trump administration’s anti-liberty agenda.
We, as people and members of the global community, are better than this. The ACLU knows this, and we know you do, too. Now, it’s up to each and every one of us to show that and to fight for the rights of everyone in this country.
Thank you,
The ACLU Team

Trump promised no new wars, lower gas prices, and “family-friendly” policies. Now, looking at a stack of broken promises, Republican women voters are staying home.
One MAHA influencer said it best: “I cannot express to you the level of alarm bells that should be ringing for the GOP.”
That’s why the midterms are a once-in-a-generation opportunity for our country to reverse course. We must pack the ballot with as many candidates as possible to ensure wins up and down the ticket.
Rush your investment to Emerge so we can recruit and train more Democratic women to win!

Last weekend, Emerge President & CEO A’shanti Gholar was in South Carolina for Democratic Weekend, joining leaders, activists, and supporters at the Blue Palmetto Dinner, Congressman Jim Clyburn’s World Famous Fish Fry, and the South Carolina Democratic Party Convention.
We also hosted an Emerge happy hour, bringing together alums, supporters, and Democrats from across the state. The energy was undeniable.
And that’s important, because South Carolina reminds us why Emerge’s work matters.
Just weeks ago, a redistricting battle threatened fair representation in the state. Had things gone differently, Congressman Jim Clyburn’s seat could have been among those impacted. At the same time, more than 156,000 South Carolinians have already cast ballots in this year’s primaries. Nearly 70% of those voters are Democrats — levels of engagement the state hasn’t seen in decades.
People are paying attention. They’re ready for change.
And Emerge women are stepping up to lead it.
We recently graduated another outstanding class of Emerge South Carolina women, and many of them are already on the ballot, running to serve their communities and fight for a stronger future.
That’s why we remain committed to every one of our Emerge states. We’re not retreating from difficult places. We’re not giving up on communities that have been overlooked. And we’re certainly not giving up on the South.
Because when women run, communities win. And when Democratic women have the training, support, and network they need, they can compete — and win — anywhere.
Will you help us continue building the bench in South Carolina and across the country with a contribution today?
The future of our democracy depends on leaders who reflect the communities they serve. Thanks to supporters like you, Emerge is helping make that future possible.
Thank you,
Ashley – Proud S. Carolinian
P.S. The excitement we’re seeing in South Carolina isn’t happening by accident. It’s the result of years of organizing, training, and investing in women leaders. Your support helps ensure we’re there for the next generation of candidates — in South Carolina and every Emerge state.

One year ago today, Minnesota lost two beautiful souls to an act of unfathomable violence.

Melissa, her husband Mark and their beloved Golden Retriever, Gilbert were shot and killed together inside their Brooklyn Park home. They were partners in life, a devoted mother and father, and on that terrible morning, they were taken together in a politically motivated assassination. Investigators later uncovered a hit list with nearly 70 names – targeting lawmakers, abortion providers, and advocates.
This attack was designed to breed terror and silence a movement. It was meant to make us surrender to anger and despair.
But we refuse to let fear win. Before she was stolen from us, Melissa promised that gun violence prevention would be a defining priority for her state. Today, we honor both Melissa and Mark by turning our grief into unyielding action.
We are building a future where no family has to endure the stolen moments, the empty chairs, and the profound grief left in the wake of gun violence. Will you stand with us by giving a donation today?
Melissa and Mark’s legacy will endure through the family they raised, the community they shaped, and the young people rising up today to demand change.

Saturday, Trump turns 80, and he wants a parade. We’re regifting what he’s handed us all year: a shitshow.
On June 14, we’re putting the Trump Stamp where it belongs: a porta-potty. We’re putting stalls in Washington, D.C., so the people he’s stepped on can leave him a token of appreciation.
Chip in before his birthday and help us dump on his parade.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,
Congress officially just passed a bill that gives nearly $70 billion to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and Trump has signed it into law.1
Americans across the country are struggling to feed their families, make rent, pay for health costs, but instead of providing relief for everyday people, Republicans have prioritized putting more money into terrorizing our communities.
Republicans are granting unlimited blank checks to the same agency that has killed multiple people this year, including Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Trump’s ICE is out of control, and his MAGA allies in Congress are looking the other way while aiding Trump’s power grabs every chance they have.
To be clear, there isn’t a shortage in the budget for ICE. Last year, the reconciliation package gave the Department of Homeland Security a budget of $191 billion, with more than $100 billion unspent. And at the same time, they cut billions from Medicare coverage.2
Trump and his MAGA allies created a false budgeting crisis so they could have endless taxpayer money for more raids, separating more families, and more deportations. Meanwhile, Republicans have not lifted a finger to help lower our gas prices or the cost of living.
We can’t count on politicians who care more about donations from ICE contractors than their constituents who can’t afford groceries. We’re already working to kick these MAGA Republicans out of office in November. MoveOn just launched a massive election program to flip the House, and every single MoveOn member is needed to build our power.
Will you sign up to join the election program now to ensure we win big in November?
If you’re angry about Republicans showering ICE with more money to terrorize our streets, and handing billionaires tax cuts while the rest of America suffers, then we have a role for you to play in our most strategic election program yet. MoveOn is going all in to flip the House and support populist candidates who will fight to bring prices down and bring communities together, not continue to tear families apart.
We deserve elected officials who will protect us, combat climate change, and fight for healthcare access for ALL. We’re not shaken by today’s vote, because we know that our movement only gains more resolve and traction when the politicians recklessly pit themselves against the will of the people. That’s why MoveOn needs as many people as possible to get involved and stop MAGA from holding control of Congress this November.
Our work starts today. MoveOn members are already phone-banking, hosting canvass launch parties, and responding to these setbacks with multiplied action. Will you join us in building a movement to demand more for our communities this November?
Thanks for all you do.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,
I’ve spent decades in Washington and decades studying how power works in America. I’ve watched movements rise and fall. I’ve seen what happens when the people fight back—and what happens when they don’t.
So when I tell you that MoveOn’s just-released 2026 election plan is the real deal, I mean it. I’ve looked at this carefully. And I believe in it.
Will you start a monthly donation of $5 to help make the next two years look nothing like the time we’re living through now?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
Here’s what I know: Trump didn’t win in 2024 because America wanted what he was selling. He won because millions of voters who would have been with us stayed home.
Not because they love authoritarianism or billionaire tax cuts or the gutting of public services. But because too many Democratic candidates gave them no compelling reason to show up.
Cautious, corporate-friendly half-measures don’t inspire turnout. They kill it.
I’ve been saying this for years. The Democratic Party cannot keep taking Wall Street cash and Big Tech money and then wonder why working people don’t trust it.
MoveOn gets this.
And they have a compelling plan for victory. MoveOn’s in-house analysts spent the past year combing through the numbers from 2024. What they found should stop you cold. In 11 battleground congressional districts, the number of MoveOn members who skipped voting in 2024 exceeds the margin of victory needed to flip those seats in November.
These MoveOn members—people who sign petitions, call Congress, show up to No Kings protests—sat out the election. Not because they gave up on their values. But because the Democratic Party failed them. Our rigged economic system failed them. That’s an enormous difference. And it means MoveOn has a direct line to the very voters who will decide these races.
That’s why I’m asking: Will you to start a monthly donation of $5 today? This program is built around connecting with exactly those voters—people MoveOn already has a relationship with—earning back their trust, and turning them out to vote. That is a winnable fight. But only if we fund it.
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
I also want to say something about the stakes, because I don’t think we should mince words.
What we are living through right now is not normal politics. Rent, groceries, healthcare, childcare—the basic costs of a decent life are crushing working families. And what do Republicans offer? Hundreds of billions in tax cuts for the ultrawealthy, blank checks for war with Iran and unmasked agents terrorizing our communities, and a $1.8 billion trust fund for January 6 rioters. That is not a governing agenda. That is a heist.
This is what unchecked power looks like. And the only thing that checks it is a Congress that doesn’t rubber-stamp it.
If Democrats win back the House this November, the era of Trump governing without accountability is over. We get subpoena power. We get a check on the cruelty and the corruption. We begin the hard work of rebuilding.
I have given a lot of my life to the belief that democracy can deliver for ordinary people—that government can be a force for good when it’s accountable to the people rather than to the powerful. MoveOn is fighting for that belief. Their plan is serious, their data is rigorous, and the moment we are in is as urgent as any I have seen.
Please, will you start a monthly donation of $5 and help us end MAGA’s grip on Congress—and start building an economy and a country that work for everyone.?
No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.
The power belongs to us. Let’s use it.
Thanks for all you do.
–Robert Reich
P.S. In 11 congressional districts, the MoveOn members who didn’t vote in 2024 are enough to flip the seat this November. Your monthly donation of $5 to MoveOn will help us make sure they show up.

Today, millions of people around the world are tuning in to celebrate the opening day of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It’s a moment meant for joy, unity, and community.
But here at March For Our Lives, we’re forced to look at a completely different, heartbreaking reality.
Just days ago in Toledo, Ohio, families gathered for the Old West End Festival — a beautiful, historic kickoff to the summer season filled with live music, food trucks, and art. Instead of making memories, festivalgoers were forced to hit the deck, dodging a rapid burst of gunfire and running for cover. Twelve people were wounded, with victims as young as 14 years old.
A community celebration, a graduation, or a neighborhood space has been unraveled by a distinctly American pattern of violence 170 times this year.
We’ve spent years being angry, Kendall. We are tired of the politicians who shrug their shoulders and accept this bloodshed as the price of a free society. But we refuse to let grief freeze us in place.
March For Our Lives was founded by youth, run by youth, and built on the radical belief that our generation can — and will — end this crisis. We know that top-down politics isn’t enough. True change requires a massive, grassroots culture shift around guns. We are actively training the next generation of high school and college activists, giving them the tools and resources to dismantle the power of gun manufacturers and corporate lobbyists who profit off our fear.
Summer festivals, neighborhood parks, and school hallways should be safe spaces for families to spend time together without fear. We are choosing hope, education, and relentless action over compliance.
Thank you for refusing to look away,

It’s official— voters in California’s Central Valley have rejected the mainstream Democratic Party’s candidate backed by crypto-billionaires and AIPAC allies. They instead chose Randy Villegas, a 30-year-old son of immigrants who ran on immigrant rights and Medicare for all, to advance to the general election. This race was close– he won by less than 4,000 votes– and the organizing from SURJ and our partners at Dolores Huerta Action Fund, Seed the Vote, and Working Families Party helped clinch the victory!
Alongside our partners, we’re continuing our successful work in primaries across the country to send anti-billionaire, justice-aligned, working-class champions like Randy to Congress. Can you give a gift today to help power wins like this one the rest of the summer?
We know defeating Republicans in the midterms is not enough. We need true progressive candidates who not only stand up to MAGA, but who refuse to be bought and sold by Wall Street or Silicon Valley– who will fight for an agenda that actually delivers on just immigration policy, better healthcare, taxing the billionaires. Randy Villegas is one of those candidates, and we’re proud that over 100 SURJ members made nearly 90,000 voter contacts to help bring him over the finish line.
CA-22 is a working-class district where nearly 70% of people rely on Medicaid– the single largest proportion of Medicaid recipients in the country. When cuts go through in 2027, the majority of the district will be without or vastly underserved by healthcare, which David Valadao, the Republican incumbent, voted for.
And we heard this over and over again in conversations on our phonebanks and when we knocked doors with our partners at Seed the Vote and Dolores Huerta Action Fund. One of our phonebankers shared:
“Paulette, a voter I spoke with, hasn’t voted since 2016. She started off saying she doesn’t care about politics. As we continued talking, I learned she had cancer. I shared about Randy and his commitment to Medicare. She was all in. She’ll be voting for him in the primary.”
CA-22 is a majority people of color district– and SURJ did what we do best, taking responsibility for contacting the white, majority-working-class voters– 48% of the district– who have so much to gain from an agenda like Villegas’. Most of the people we spoke with vote infrequently, many relied on Medicaid like Paulette, and many had never heard of Randy Villegas.
This is SURJ’s organizing strategy at work: we know that working-class white voters have a shared interest in progressive, anti-racist, working-class agendas. We also know corporate Dems and the GOP are either counting these voters out or working to radicalize them the other direction. But our electoral results tell a different story: that white folks are fed up, need change, and ready to take action in solidarity as members of the working class.

It takes a lot of people power to stop oil wars and rigged elections and win affordable healthcare and racial justice. Individuals acting alone will not be enough– to organize means to move as a collective and build enough power that we cannot be ignored.
One way we do this is by joining an organization. Think of all the movements for change you admire. At the heart of them all, there were organizations working together to win a shared agenda.
This week at SURJ, it’s our National Membership Drive, and we’re asking you to join our organization. This means chipping in with monthly dues and your time and skills to help power the work of SURJ. We are proud to be a social movement organization that is leading and a part of nearly every national social justice coalition fighting against authoritarianism right now.
We are proud to carry on the legacy of anti-racist white organizations before us that took on the responsibility of organizing our own against racism.

Mai Vang is officially headed to the General Election in CA-07!🎉
“Why are you asking me for $5 when Trump is destroying our country and Democrats aren’t doing anything about it?”
Mai took on a 48-year political dynasty — and won. Her opponent, incumbent Doris Matsui, had twice the campaign resources, AIPAC money in her warchest, hundreds of thousands from defense contractors, and the full backing of the Sacramento political establishment. Mai still came out on top.
That’s not just a win, it’s a statement about the future of CA-07 and the Democratic Party.
One where working class communities finally have a seat at the table. One where corporate money and establishment backing don’t automatically decide who gets to represent a district. And one where the candidate with the right message and real roots in their community can beat the machine.
This is our 14th win this cycle, and we’re incredibly proud to have supported Mai in this race. She’s exactly the kind of candidate we were built to back.
Being a working mom and the daughter of Hmong refugees who grew up on SNAP and Medicaid in the same community she’s been fighting for her entire life — that matters. It means she never needed a briefing to understand what working families in Sacramento are up against. It’s a reality she’s lived herself.
If Mai wins in November, she’ll make history as the first Hmong American ever elected to Congress. I won’t sugar coat it, this race will be competitive. Mai will be facing Matsui again in a head-to-head matchup. But she just proved that she has what it takes to win, even when the establishment goes all in against her.
The momentum is real, the grassroots energy behind her campaign is palpable, and her deep ties to the community set her apart from her opponent. What Mai needs right now are the resources to sustain her fight all the way to November.
Thank you,
David Hogg
P.S. If it confuses you that Mai won her primary but is still running against her Democratic opponent in November, don’t worry! It’s because of California’s unique primary system. They have a non-partisan primary system where the top two from the primary, no matter the party, advance to the General.

I took the oath of office just after midnight on New Year’s Day, in a historic decommissioned subway station beneath City Hall.
No fanfare, just the hum of the city above us, and the feeling that something had shifted.
An energy that had been building for months in living rooms and community centers, on doorsteps and street corners, and in the hearts of people who had been told for too long that the system wasn’t for them.
For the first time in a long time, it felt like it was.
When I first announced my campaign for mayor, I was polling at 1%. I was a state assemblyman from Queens running against one of the most powerful political machines in the country. The establishment wrote us off before we even got started.
But they forgot to account for something: the extraordinary coalition of working people, immigrants, young people, and first-time voters who decided that this city could be different.
3 out of 4 voters under 30 voted for our campaign. Youth turnout was among the highest ever recorded for a municipal election in this country.
Young people didn’t just cast ballots. They knocked doors, organized their neighbors, and built a compelling movement that mobilized a city. They made our victory possible. And Leaders We Deserve played a crucial role in that work.
I’d like to take a moment to tell you about the first time I met Leaders We Deserve’s cofounder, David Hogg.
My race was one of Leaders’ first endorsements of 2025, and in the lead up to the primary election, David came to New York to help me get out the vote. We wanted to film a video together encouraging people to vote early, so we decided to meet in Washington Square Park. It quickly became clear that filming a 30 second video together in the middle of a park would be easier said than done. But what ended up happening was far better than we could have planned. With every attempted take, we were quickly approached by another young person excited to talk to us about their political views, their thoughts on my platform, their excitement about the next generation of leaders, and our shared determination to turn the page on the politics of the past.
Those few hours in Washington Square Park told a story about what becomes possible when a generation decides it’s done waiting. When young people stop being told their issues are too radical, their candidates are unelectable, and their vision is unrealistic. And then work to prove the entire establishment wrong.
That record-breaking coalition of young people didn’t just elect a mayor. It proved something that I believe with everything I am: When people are offered a real vision, not just opposition to the other side, but actual solutions to the cost of living, housing, health care, and the systems that have failed working families for too long — they will show up.
But here’s what I need you to understand: what happened in New York City was not just a New York City story.
The problems we’re taking on in New York — rent that’s too high, health care out of reach, and a political class more loyal to donors than the people they represent — those are the same problems working families are dealing with in every corner of this country.
And there are real solutions to these issues, but we need courageous leaders who are ready to step up and fight for them.
That’s why Leaders We Deserve’s work is so important. As I said, my race was one of their first endorsements of 2025, and because of supporters like you they’ve spent every day since finding even more next generation fighters to help propel to victory. People like my friend Claire Valdez, who is running for Congress in NY-07 with the same fearlessness and working class conviction that powered our campaign. And Demi Palecek who recently won her primary in Illinois against the corporate PACs and dark money that tried to buy her seat.
These are our people. This is our moment. And this movement does not stop at the five boroughs.
Thank you for your support. Our wins wouldn’t be possible without you. Onward.
With solidarity,
Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Progressives Are Proud Patriots, Too

Did you know that progressives and moderates and independents can own and fly flags to express our patriotism, to make clear our aspirations for a more perfect union?
That the collection and display of flags are not limited to any one group of voters?
Nobody has a monopoly on the flag.

We Need Whole-Person Health, Not Whole Lots of Barriers
By Alice Bond and Kristen Sheppard
Healthcare is on the verge: becoming more expensive and less accessible, while public health is getting worse. Over the past two decades, depression rates have risen alongside substance abuse disorder, anxiety, loneliness, and suicide. Covid-19 accelerated that decline in wellness dramatically. The resulting combination of exponential demand and lack of political will has created enormous pressure for better policy from clinicians, researchers, advocacy organizations, states, and the public.
Why talk about this now? Because mental health is increasing its prominence in the public mind. According to an American Psychiatric Association’s Healthy Minds Poll conducted December 2025 and published in 2026, more than 1 in 3 Americans (38%) planned to make a mental health-related New Year’s resolution — up 5% from the previous year. And Rula, a national behavioral healthcare company, found in their 2026 State of Mental Health Report that “60% of adults report that mental health has become more important to them.’”
Still, Americans do not register the wider impact of mental illness on physical health. A 2026 National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI)-Ipsos Workplace Poll found that while knowledge of mental illness is growing, grasping the connection with physical illness is another story. “People see mental health as relevant and appropriate to talk about at work, and that’s encouraging. But real barriers persist in the form of stigma and fear of retaliation or lost opportunities,” said Megan Delp, NAMI’s director of workplace mental health.
Medical research and leading clinical evidence agree: mental health is bound inextricably to physical health. The 2026 World Health Organization (WHO) social messaging reinforces its longstanding position: “There is no health without mental health.”
That connection is fundamental to the healthcare system itself. A whole-person approach marks a growing shift in medicine and public policy, edging out the long-accepted notion of a clear separation between mind and body. In January 2026, New Jersey Acting Health Commissioner Jeff Brown captured that shift when announcing integrated outpatient facilities combining primary care, mental health, and addiction treatment: “Healthcare works best when patients are treated as a whole person, not a collection of separate problems.”
As healthcare nears a perfect storm, it also reveals an opportunity. Whole-person healthcare can reduce burdensome paperwork, high costs, and lack of accessibility by combining physical and mental health into one approach. Project 2029 notes that whole-person health has the potential to transform “our healthcare system from a system oriented toward high-cost and reactive treatment to one that emphasizes prevention, early intervention, and long-term wellbeing.”
Project 2029 is an organization of citizens committed to building “a plan of action for a future that is strong, kind, and prosperous.” Our paper, released March 2026, proposes health policies designed for immediate implementation on “Day One” of a 2029 Presidential administration — including “a policy foundation for eliminating any artificial distinction between physical and mental health coverage by requiring parity.”

Invitation: Indivisible Members Everywhere
Project 2029 is attracting new members all the time. People of like minds who want to help rebuild democracy by helping to create sane, sustainable policies that can be put to use immediately by a new presidential administration.
Of course, there is much more to do in restoring our democracy, so we are eager to collaborate with like-minded groups. Together, we can apply our respective areas of expertise to the multiple practical needs of the movements. And we can multiply our people-power resources to bring more public attention and support to our work.
We’ve started working already with Indivisible unit members in Boston Indivisible and Indivisible Nova West (that’s one of the Virginia units) to help promote involvement at Indivisible-sponsored events and activities. Project 2029 also appreciates being able to alert folks — including former federal workers — of opportunities to share their knowledge in policy writing and operations areas here, just to name a couple of options. Project 2029 members all volunteer remotely over all time zones, so collaboration can be on your schedule.
If this sounds good to you individually, your Indivisible chapter, our own Ali Cleveland would love to hear your thoughts. Email: alicqc26@gmail.com with “Outreach and Indivisible” or similar wording in the subject line. If you want help finding Indivisible in your area, visit https://indivisible.org
Why Oct. 27 Should Matter to Some Voters This Year
Voters, we need to talk to you about the U.S. mail, particularly if you:
- work long or unpredictable hours,
- have to travel a lot,
- are disabled,
- live in a rural community,
- are age 65 or older,
- don’t do well standing in lines at voter precincts, or
- are in the military, serving away from home.
You might well be one of the Americans who like to vote by mail, and we applaud you for that.
This year, it could be harder to make sure your vote is counted, unless you know the specific deadlines in your state for getting your ballot into the mail and postmarked.
The postmark determines if a mail-in ballot is received on time, and that, in turn, determines whether the vote is counted or not. Your state sets the rules for that and other election matters. It should be either Election Day (Nov. 3, 2026 for the midterms) or another specific date close to the Election Day.
A recent, important, and subtle change has been made in post office procedures that affects all this. The day you mail an item, be it a completed ballot or a birthday card, may not be the same day the item gets a postmark. Your mail may now go from your local office to a regional processing center to get processed and postmarked – which can be a couple of days after you mailed it.
That means you should mail your ballot earlier than you probably have in the past! Whether it is for a primary election, get it in the mail seven days before Election Day or seven days before your state’s deadline day. Even sooner, if you can.
Some groups, including Vote.org, allow you to research your state’s deadline information online and even let you request an electronic reminder to mail your ballot.
If, for some reason, you end up at a post office or another retail postal operation with your ballot, you may go to the counter and request a manual postmark, for free, according to the Campaign Legal Center. This applies to any post office, and to any retail site, the center said, and should satisfy the rules.

“Civic Power” Report: Organizing Is How We Win Elections and Pass Bold Policies
