The delegate results are in

8th LD Democrats, good morning.

Candidate filing for the 2024 state convention has closed. You can see your delegates here. Note that this list of delegates includes some who are automatic. These automatic delegates are local party officials who filed out of an abundance of caution.

As you can see, we’re going to be a diverse group. We join many of our fellow east side LDs in sending a lot of people to the state convention. We came in a little under our 20-delegate maximum, so no vote will take place — everyone who filed is now a delegate.

Delegates will be getting a separate email from me so we can talk about what we want to see happen, as well as wider east side strategy. That said, I want to thank everyone who signed up to represent our chunk of Washington. We’re going to make sure the west side knows we’re here, we’re active and that we can’t be taken for granted. Additionally, special thank yous to 16th LD Chair Jeffrey Robinson, Benton County 2nd Vice Chair Allison Dabler, and 8th LD Vice Chair Pamela Gaudet for their help recruiting and for other assistance.

Our next meeting is 9 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Richland library. This is a chance for delegates and the membership to meet and talk. We will keep this meeting to one hour, unless otherwise needed.

An important note for everyone: because the 8th Legislative District went overwhelmingly for President Biden in the 2024 presidential primary, all of our state convention delegates are committed to Biden, regardless of delegate preference. Only a few LDs had votes clear the required 15% vote to have uncommitted delegates.

See you this Saturday.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Hello Democrats and Happy Friday!

Spring is in the air and that means it’s time to get outside and work hard for Democrats everywhere in Washington State!

There is so much at stake this year and we need to do all we can to remind voters that Democrats are the Party that will work around the clock to ensure a better future for everyone. And in case you need a reminder of why this is true, please join me in celebrating the 14th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act!

The ACA ensured access to healthcare for millions of Americans, including the 25% of non-Elderly Washingtonians with preexisting conditions. This historic legislation currently ensures access to safe, reliable and more affordable healthcare for 270,000 Washingtonians! Yet another reminder that Democrats deliver and that we must do everything in our power to prevent the MAGA GOP from tearing down all that we have built together!

The big news in Washington State politics this week is that new legislative district maps have been approved. A report from the Washington Community Alliance shows that the revised boundaries are projected to make LD 14 significantly more diverse and Democratic and notably improve Democratic performance in LDs 12 and 17. All of these districts now present major pickup opportunities and we will fight tirelessly to ensure they go bright blue!

None of our progress would be possible without you. Thank you all for joining us in the critical work of electing Democrats across Washington State and across the nation. We are glad to have each and every one of you on board!

WORKING FOR WASHINGTON

It’s been a terrific week traveling across the state and helping my fellow Democrats get fired up and ready to go for election season!

Last weekend I had the privilege to speak to the Spokane County Democrats at their annual Tom Foley Legacy Dinner. It was my honor to share the stage  alongside U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, State Treasurer Mike Pellicciotti, as well as my great friend Ken Martin who also happens to be President of the Association of State Democratic Committees and Chair of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party!

Congratulations to the Spokane Dems on such a successful event – I look forward to lots of quality time spent working in CD 5 this year!

I also had the great privilege of joining Rep. Jesse Johnson and students from Federal Way High School to discuss why voting is so crucial to our democracy and how their voices are even more powerful when they engage in our democratic process. If you have young people in your life, I encourage you to help them get involved!

The Washington State High School Democrats are hosting a virtual forum on Tuesday, March 26th at 7PMI hope you can join us!

Civically engaged young people are a huge part of our winning Democratic coalition and we intend to work hard to make sure they turn out in record numbers in 2024 and for years to come!

What I’m Listening to This Week

Worms at Work

Gee whiz will mix with science and business strategy Thursday with Russ Davis and his team, Sierra Smith and George Gamoff.

The “gee whiz” will open our eyes to a world of worms used to treat hazardous chemical streams. The science will take over as we think about just how it works, where it works, and the variables that make the difference. And ask Russ about the business strategy. He right in the middle of replicating the science and pushing it to build new applications.

Join us Thursday evening.

Worms defeat PCB’s!

“This new permanent water filtering solution at our Walla Walla facility has been operating at full capacity for many weeks now, and the facility is compliant with their wastewater permit conditions within the time frame that was set by the city,” wrote Sacconi. (Refresco)

An understatement. Refresco was facing plant closure for failure to meet City of Walla Walla effluent requirements. The problems were low pH and elevated PCB’s, “as much as 43 times the regulatory limit.” COVID gave them breathing room to June, 2022. They came into compliance May, 2022…after six million dollars of fixes, none of which worked.

Worms kept Refresco in business in Walla Walla. Worms and ingenuity. Russ Davis provided both. Using BioFiltro technology developed in Chile, Russ engineered the solution that saved Refresco.

Russ doing business as Organix and now as Perca has done proof of concept work with the Department of Corrections Penitentiary in Walla Walla and now is bidding on the DOC contract.

These business references for vermifiltration are important because the whole idea is so implausible. And no one is better than Russ for telling the story.

Join us next week. Learn possibilities and limitations. Ask about the variables.

Run for State Delegate – 8th LD

8th LD Democrats, good evening.

To date, we’ve had five people sign up to become delegates to the state convention. We have room for 15 more.

We need you to join in.

This is our chance to influence the state party. Never before have all legislative districts had the same allotment of delegates — the west side always had us at a disadvantage. But now, if we can show up with other east side LDs like our brothers and sisters in the 16th LD, we can effectively put east side values into the state Democratic platform.

You do not have to travel — this convention will be hybrid, allowing you the fullest possible participation from the comfort of your home.

However, you still need to register. Head to https://wadelegateregistration2024.com/ to sign up by March 31. Email chair Jake Dorsey (dorsey.jake@gmail.com) if you’ve got 8th LD questions, or email delegateinfo@wa-democrats.org for specific questions about the convention.

Thank you for the consideration!

I’m excited to invite you to run for delegate and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the Democratic Party at our State Convention. The deadline for registration is rapidly approaching: March 31 at 5:00pm, with elections following closely on April 6. This is your chance to be at the heart of our democratic process, contributing your voice and vision to our collective path forward.

Becoming a delegate is a unique and powerful way to engage in our democracy, offering you the chance to represent your community’s values and priorities on a larger stage. It’s a role that not only allows you to contribute to critical discussions and decisions but also to be part of a community of like-minded individuals dedicated to progress and change.

However, if running for delegate isn’t the right fit for you at this moment, there’s another impactful way you can support our cause.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Hello Democrats and Happy Friday!

Thank you to all of you who voted in this week’s Presidential Primary – and please join me in cheering President Joe Biden as the clear winner in Washington State! With 90% of votes tallied the incumbent president earned an 84.9% vote share, which could trend even higher in the days to come.

Following several successful Primary showings this week – Biden has officially secured enough delegates to clinch the 2024 Presidential nomination. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it is nonetheless a strong call to action to get involved, get engaged, and do all we can to help Democrats win this November – from the local level all the way to the White House.

With another Biden vs. Trump race appearing inevitable, this year’s stakes are coming into clear focus. This is a battle between democracy vs. autocracy, understanding vs. hate, progress vs. destruction, and hope vs. fear – and we must do everything in our power to ensure voters make the right choice and set our country on the right course.

Thank you for standing with us in this critical work – we need everyone on board.

While we have made great strides in Washington State – we can’t take anything for granted and we must not forget about all the hard work needed here at home to protect and expand our Democratic power.

Just this week – former Congressman and presumptive GOP gubernatorial nominee Dave Reichert showed tacit support for Trump by refusing to take a stance on whether or not he would back his presidential campaign this fall. It is absolutely critical that we never yield an inch of ground, let alone our State’s top office, to the MAGA Republicans and we will fight tooth and nail to hold the line for years to come.

Because let’s face it – Donald Trump and his Republican Party are bad for the people of the United States – period. In a particularly disturbing turn, a past Trump aide released a book earlier this week highlighting the former President’s repeated praise for autocrats like Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-Un, and even Adolf Hitler.

Any Republican, Reichert included, who is willing to hold their nose and line up behind a leader this dangerous can never be allowed to hold power in Washington State – and it is up to you, me, and every Washington Democrat to do all we can to defeat them.

WORKING FOR WASHINGTON

Please join me in wishing former Speaker of the WA State House – and lifelong civil servant Frank Chopp congratulations on an illustrious career in the WA State Legislature.

Chopp joins a number of high-profile Democrats stepping down at the end of this year and leaves some big shoes to fill. We wish him all the best in future endeavors and look forward to seeing who steps forward to carry his mantle!

WA Dems in the News

This week’s presidential Primary spurred some great press recognition for the WA Dems – and we wanted to share a few stories where we’ve been quoted and highlighted!

We’re proud to have our finger on the pulse here at the State Party and we hope you’ll find this coverage informative and enlightening!

Jayapal calls for government action on anniversary of Silicon Valley Bank collapse

Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) called for the federal government to take action on the “systemic failures” that led to the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank on the anniversary of the bank failure that briefly sparked fears of a wider crisis.

Howdy,

It’s Emma, the DNC Merch Director. My job involves (you guessed it!) coming up with ideas for new DNC and Team Biden-Harris merch, getting everything produced, and then making sure it gets out into the world for supporters like you to enjoy.

love my job and I think constantly about the impact of merch in our work to elect Democrats up and down the ballot, from the Oval Office to local offices. You may not know this, but merch is a big part of our fundraising strategy — so every time supporters like you purchase a mug or t-shirt, you’re helping fund our work to reelect President Biden and Vice President Harris, and elect Democrats at all levels of government.

That’s why I’ve set a bold goal of reaching 100,000 Democrats to let you know about our online store today — and help ensure our impact is huge.

Why 100,000? Donald Trump boasts about having sold ONE MILLION MAGA HATS. That’s a lot of red out there. And it means he’s got a lot of money coming in via those MAGA hats.

To make sure we keep our fundraising on track (and that we see just as much blue merch out and about), we have to make sure 2,500 Democrats buy merch every day. But right now, it’s the afternoon and we are only 53% of the way to our goal. We’ve got some ground to cover.

Can we count on you to show your support for President Biden and buy some merch today?

We can’t afford to let Trump’s “Make America Great Again” gear overshadow us. Because let’s face it, Democrats bring so much more to the table than just cheap slogans. And we have cool merch.

Happy shopping,

❤️Emma
