Happy Black History Month!

Black history deserves to be celebrated every month, but this month serves as a special opportunity to come together and share the stories of the incredible Black leaders and changemakers who came before us.

So many civil rights leaders and heroes have long been overlooked by history, like the Black men and women of the U.S. military who broke countless barriers in the military. As a Black U.S. Army veteran and HBCU graduate, this month is incredibly significant to me and has me reflecting on the historic nature of our campaign.

Together, we have the opportunity to make our own history in Washington. Winning the Attorney General’s race would make me Washington’s first Black statewide executive office holder.

I’m excited to continue to put in the work to ensure we win this historic campaign. This month, I’ll be traveling the state and attending more events to spread my vision for Washington and celebrate Black History Month. So be on the lookout for more updates later in February on how I’ve been honoring the contributions and legacies of my fellow Black Americans.

Thanks for taking the time to read my note, and please take time this month to educate yourself on and celebrate Black history.

Best,

— Nick

Friends –

This past Sunday was World Cancer Day: something that has affected my family, friends, and this past year, myself. As I’ve moved through my cancer journey, I’ve seen how diseases can creep their way into communities and the strongest among us. Like so many things in this life, it’s never fair — and hardly ever expected.

The way we are living is unsustainable for our individual and collective health and the health of this one planet we call home. My team can attest to this: Since receiving the news I had cancer early in my campaign for Public Lands Commissioner, not once have I thought about stepping away. This diagnosis cemented my focus, strengthened my resolve, and showed me how important it is to bring our shared vision of people-first stewardship to office. Giving up has never been an option for me and so many others who look like me and come from families like mine.

Now, I’m cancer-free. As I continue this fight with preventive chemotherapy, I am also fighting for a future where we are breathing cleaner air, drinking cleaner water, and tapping into the abundance of these beautiful lands.

We are facing a collective environmental and public health crisis, not an individual one. There are connections between cancer and climate catastrophes — some that I’m grateful for, such as the medicinal Pacific yew tree being used in my chemo regimen and some that must be disrupted and changed.

We live in a time of grave threats to our livelihoods, and we live in a time of great awareness of the work ahead. Are we going to come together to fight for an environment that works for all people?

This has been the hardest fight of my life, and it’s also made me more aware than I ever have been about the interconnectedness of our lives, struggles, and blessings. I’m blessed with this growing community of support, and I will continue to fight for you.

Adelante,

As Nick’s been traveling the state talking with Washingtonians, one thing that’s been made incredibly clear is that we all share a vision for a brighter future.

We’re all fighting for a better future where all Washingtonians are safe from crime, safe from gun violence, and safe from discrimination. A future where we tackle pressing issues head-on, like protecting our democratic values, addressing the climate crisis, rejecting hate, and protecting a woman’s right to choose.

This fight for a fairer and more just future isn’t new for Nick. He has twenty years of public service experience standing up for the rights of those who are too often taken advantage of by those in power. With your help, we can elect Nick and make this future a reality. That’s why we’re asking today:

Will you invest in Nick’s campaign today to help us reach our upcoming end-of-month goal and ensure we can create a brighter future for all Washingtonians no matter their age, their race, their gender, or where they live?

Thank you,

— Team Nick

Friends –

This weekend, I got a postcard reminding me to cast my electronic ballot for King Conservation District. I voted, did you? Don’t feel bad if you haven’t yet…

Most people don’t even know what conservation districts do.

But here is why it matters, and why I challenge you to take 5 minutes to follow this link to vote — and make your voice heard for King Conservation District Seat No. 1.

Image courtesy of King Conservation District.

King Conservation District (KCD) helps protect our access to clean water, healthy forests, and local food through King County. KCD provides education, technical assistance, and cost-sharing opportunities to everyday people in forest management, farm conservation planning, wildfire preparedness, and streamside and shoreline enhancement.

Their work supports community gardens, urban forest canopy, and local food systems. All this to say: KCD has an integral role in how we better steward our lands for the benefit of all people, plants, and animals.

Here’s a bit more information about how you can vote today:

KCD includes all registered voters in King County. We have the opportunity to have a direct say in who sits on the board which impacts things from how and where money is spent to policy that affects our daily lives. Voting has already begun and ends on February 13.

I have supported legislation to get KCD’s elections on our regular ballot cycles (which has not yet made it to the Governor’s desk). In the meantime, we can be actively engaged with our local conservation district to take meaningful steps toward environmental justice. Cast your ballot today!

Friends –

It’s hard to believe we’re in the last full week of January. Time is moving quickly, which means the short legislative session is also moving very quickly.

There is so much important work happening this session; and my commitment to strengthening our workforce, fighting for environmental justice, supporting immigrants, and uplifting all marginalized communities is as strong as ever. With so much to fight for, here are just a few public lands-related bills I’m supporting this session:

  • Senate Bill (SB) 6237 creates wildlife safe passages to improve connectivity and better protect the land and all life that share it.
  • SB 6011 which concerns the authority of the Commissioner of Public Lands to enter into Tribal interlocal agreements.
  • SB 5967 which allows us to create an exemption to the leasehold excise tax for housing leases on public lands.
  • SB 5946 would establish a fallen firefighter memorial.
  • SB 5910 creates a Smokey Bear special license plate.
  • Senate Concurrent Resolution 8402 will rename the Natural Resources Building as the Jennifer Belcher Building.

These bills and resolution vary in degree, giving us pathways to addressing critical climate policy through co-managment and affordable housing and creates space for remembrance of those who have made this work possible.

As we continue to learn and work together to find practical solutions to our most pressing issues, we can engage in new ways. If you’re looking for a starting point, join us.

Environmentalism takes many forms, and climate justice effects us all. We all deserve clean water to drink, clear air to breathe, and good jobs both in and outdoors. Climate justice looks different in cities, suburbs, Tribal lands, rural communities, Eastern Washington and Coastal Washington. This is why we need you and your important, diverse perspective.

Onwards,

Team Rebecca Saldaña (D)

cross our country, we’re seeing increased undemocratic attacks on voting rights from politicians and judges who are putting their extremist beliefs ahead of the rights of American voters. Will you chip in to Nick Brown’s campaign today to help us elect a champion for voting rights?

Voting Rights Law Faces More Setbacks With Conservative Judges

— Bloomberg Law

These attacks on voter protections, like what’s left of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, are just one example of how these extremist leaders are challenging one of the most sacred democratic practices in our country. We should be making voting and access to voting easier for Americans, not harder.

As Attorney General, Nick will stand up to any attacks on Washingtonians’ voting rights. To get Nick into the Office of the Attorney General, we need your help to ensure we have the resources we need to take on our conservative opponent’s big-money GOP donors. So what do you say, Kendall?

Will you chip in $10 or more to help Nick win and protect the voting rights of all Washingtonians, no matter their age, their race, their gender, or where they live?

When everyone votes and their voices are heard by the people in power, our government is stronger and more just. Thanks for your support today!
