ACLU Supporter, we’ll be in front of the Supreme Court bright and early tomorrow rallying in defense of abortion rights – as the justices hear arguments in the case that could seriously restrict access to mifepristone, a safe medication used in most abortions nationwide.

These attacks are steeped in unpopular, unscientific, and unfounded claims. We’re headed to the steps of the Supreme Court with the facts on our side – and the names of over 180,000 ACLU members like you who signed our petition in support of medication abortion.

So at the top of the week, we’re delivering you three must-reads before tomorrow as we fiercely defend access to medication abortion:

Mifepristone myths DEBUNKED!

Effective action starts with knowing the facts. Need a refresher on what mifepristone is? Check out this piece as we share the facts on why medication abortion is safe and must be accessible. Read more >>>

ACLU files in support of mifepristone

The ACLU delivered a powerful amicus brief to the Supreme Court defending medication abortion access. Our brief dismantles the junk science trying to block safe medication abortion and declares our civil liberties must be protected. See the details of the brief and how we’re fighting back >>>

Caught up, time to act!

Oral arguments begin in D.C. tomorrow and we’re rallying in front of SCOTUS to protect medication abortion. For anyone in the D.C. area, it’s not too late to join us from 9 a.m. to noon and make your voice heard and send a message! And for everyone across the country, you can fight for medication abortion access wherever you are! Add your name to protect reproductive rights nationwide >>>

No matter what unfolds at SCOTUS, we will continue to fight for reproductive freedom and ALL civil liberties up ahead without wavering – and we cannot thank you enough for your support through it all.

Until tomorrow,

The ACLU Team

Since the gutting of Roe, our work has shifted in many ways. We have taken our fight to the states, and won. We have been successful in our fights to get ballot initiatives passed, elections won, and toxic legislation stopped in its tracks. However, we still have more work to do.

And we do this while anti-abortion activists are mobilizing with full force against us, jeopardizing not just our freedoms but our very safety. Can you chip in today to help keep activists safe & able to keep fighting for us all?

Increasingly, our actions and organizers are being targeted by far-right extremists. The need to make sure our folks are safe from doxxing, disruptive counter-protests, and online harassment has increased significantly since the disastrous Dobbs decision.

As we continue to block their efforts, antis will become more frustrated and even more volatile. We need to be sure that we can keep our folks safe at protests, actions, and online.

Can you chip in $15 (or whatever you can) today to help keep activists safe & able to keep fighting for us all?

In struggle,

Tamika Middleton

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Hello Democrats and Happy Friday!

Spring is in the air and that means it’s time to get outside and work hard for Democrats everywhere in Washington State!

There is so much at stake this year and we need to do all we can to remind voters that Democrats are the Party that will work around the clock to ensure a better future for everyone. And in case you need a reminder of why this is true, please join me in celebrating the 14th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act!

The ACA ensured access to healthcare for millions of Americans, including the 25% of non-Elderly Washingtonians with preexisting conditions. This historic legislation currently ensures access to safe, reliable and more affordable healthcare for 270,000 Washingtonians! Yet another reminder that Democrats deliver and that we must do everything in our power to prevent the MAGA GOP from tearing down all that we have built together!

The big news in Washington State politics this week is that new legislative district maps have been approved. A report from the Washington Community Alliance shows that the revised boundaries are projected to make LD 14 significantly more diverse and Democratic and notably improve Democratic performance in LDs 12 and 17. All of these districts now present major pickup opportunities and we will fight tirelessly to ensure they go bright blue!

None of our progress would be possible without you. Thank you all for joining us in the critical work of electing Democrats across Washington State and across the nation. We are glad to have each and every one of you on board!

WORKING FOR WASHINGTON

It’s been a terrific week traveling across the state and helping my fellow Democrats get fired up and ready to go for election season!

Last weekend I had the privilege to speak to the Spokane County Democrats at their annual Tom Foley Legacy Dinner. It was my honor to share the stage  alongside U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, State Treasurer Mike Pellicciotti, as well as my great friend Ken Martin who also happens to be President of the Association of State Democratic Committees and Chair of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party!

Congratulations to the Spokane Dems on such a successful event – I look forward to lots of quality time spent working in CD 5 this year!

I also had the great privilege of joining Rep. Jesse Johnson and students from Federal Way High School to discuss why voting is so crucial to our democracy and how their voices are even more powerful when they engage in our democratic process. If you have young people in your life, I encourage you to help them get involved!

The Washington State High School Democrats are hosting a virtual forum on Tuesday, March 26th at 7PMI hope you can join us!

Civically engaged young people are a huge part of our winning Democratic coalition and we intend to work hard to make sure they turn out in record numbers in 2024 and for years to come!

What I’m Listening to This Week

This week I had the chance to join the Research Collaborative’s Freedom Over Fascism Movement Briefing!

Yesterday, I woke up to a text.

It’s something that I’ve become used to. Extremist right-wing men harassing women activists is nothing new.

However, in light of the target that the Heritage Foundation has put on feminist groups’ backs in Project 2025, it’s important to believe these extremists when they target us.

Go to JezebelShenanigans.com to sign up for updates on all our upcoming actions!

This particular extremist has posted about me, spreading misinformation that would make me less safe and less welcome in the community where I live. His followers have referred to me as the Amarillo Women’s March Jezebel.

And well, if the shoe fits. 🤷‍♀️

am shameless in my fight against extremists attacking our freedoms, our constitutionally protected rights, and democracy itself.

You a wicked Jezebel? Yeah, you are. Take action with us here.

We are wicked smart, and completely up to the task of defeating these bottom of the barrel bigots together. Again. Just like we did in 2020, 2022, and 2023.

And the time for us to be right back on our Jezebel Shenanigans is RIGHT NOW. On Tuesday, March 26, we will protest SCOTUS in defense of medication abortion.

You up for some #JezebelShenanigans? Click here to take action!

Next month, we will get back on our Jezebel Shenanigans again as we fight the attacks on EMTALA and democracy itself, as SCOTUS hears the case that will decide if an insurrectionist can run for the President of the United States.

These are trying times. But it’s all of us against all of them. And we have more people on our side. Culture on our side. Science on our side. And tell the truth… Who do you really want to be with besides Jezebels in 2024? 💃

See you in the streets, and on the right side of history,

Rachel

TAKE A CUT

While some consumer sentiment indicators have seen recent improvement, a sharp mismatch persists between the extraordinary strength shown in the data about the performance of the economy, and the extraordinary discontent shown in data about how people feel about the economy. Some of this is based on the reality of elevated prices for necessities like housing and groceries. And some of it is likely based on a media bias towards negative news. This all adds up to what seems like a clear conclusion that more needs to be done to address high prices, expand long-term investments in public priorities, maintain the strength of the job market, and talk up the economic accomplishments of the past few years.

But that’s not how influential internet pundit Matt Yglesias sees it. Instead of pushing for continued economic strength, Yglesias is making the case that this moment is the right time to pivot to austerity. That’s right: he actually wrote that “right now really is the time for the federal government to tighten its belt” because, he argues, government is consuming too many resources. So, instead of continuing strategic public investments in public priorities like high-tech manufacturing and clean energy, Yglesias’s preference is that “every middle manager working on an ineffective program is someone who could be managing a Target or a Chipotle.” Basically, then, the argument is that the economy is booming… so we should cut back…. on the very things that are making the economy boom…. in order to expand Chipotle’s managerial hiring pool. And this guy is somehow an influential political voice?

Make it make sense.

taken by realtors from the vast majority of home sales could be eliminated after the National Association of Realtors and several major real estate agencies agreed to settle a lawsuit charging price fixing and unfair competition. The settlement could result in significantly lower costs for consumers buying homes.

paid their five senior executives more than those companies paid in taxes from 2018 to 2022. For decades, executive pay has been trending up while corporate tax rates have been trending down.

There’s no doubt that the public conversation around gender has shifted substantially since 1994 — and yet economic realities don’t seem to have followed. At least, it’s hard to conclude anything else from the chart below recently published by EPI, which shows that the gender wage gap has remained stubbornly stuck above 20% for three decades. This stagnant level of inequality follows a few decades when the gap dropped sharply from 37% in 1979 to 23% in 1994. But even that period of improvement, EPI notes, was due primarily to men’s wages failing to rise, rather than to increases in pay for women.

The gender pay gap can be seen among workers at all wage levels, and at all levels of education. And while there are no quick and easy solutions to structural sexism, there are plenty of policy options that can be pursued, including changes to training and hiring practices; expansion of paid leave; stronger enforcement of anti-discrimination laws; and an ongoing policy focus on maintaining a full-employment economy where all workers have a high level of bargaining power.

Eleven years ago, Democracy Journal released a special issue on “The Middle Out Moment” that explored the implications of what was then the brand-new theory of middle-out economics. It turned out to have been a bit premature to declare the middle-out moment was here back in 2013, but today, it’s safe to say that it’s finally arrived: we have a president who is committed to advancing middle-out policies like a strong labor market, strategic public investments, and robust antitrust enforcement — and equally committed to telling the story of how the economy grows from the bottom up and middle out, not the top down

It’s all laid out in fascinating detail in a special new follow-up edition of Democracy Journal — “The Middle Out Moment is Here — which digs into the how, the why, and the implications of the paradigm shift from trickle-down to middle-out. It’s worth taking time to read the whole thing, and explore how middle-out economics has been put into practice, and the work that lies ahead as middle-out economics becomes the new mainstream.
