League of Women Voters — Redistricting Task Force

The League of Women Voters has appointed a task force to evaluate and study potential changes to the procedure Wa State uses to redistrict our state every 10 years. If changes are developed, these changes will require a constitutional amendment. No small task.

In the local newspaper there have been several stories about Senator Nikki Torres and the redistricting of our area because of a law suit filed against WA state for the maps adopted  by the state redistricting commission.

To learn more, please join the Redistricting Reform Task Force for one of two briefings on the Washington State’s new legislative maps. How did we get here? Where do we go next?

Join LWVWA Redistricting issue Chair, Alison McCaffree; Former California Citizen Redistricting Commission member, Cynthia Dai; and Senior Counsel at the Brennan Center, Yurij Rudensky for a lively discussion.

Both sessions are the same. Choose the one most convenient for you.  Registration is necessary

ACLU Supporter,

The ACLU will always work to defend our rights. Our nationwide network of lawyers and advocates means that we can show up where it counts: fighting to create better policy, organizing advocates in communities nationwide, and taking bad actors to court wherever our rights are under attack.

Our teams are defending our fundamental freedoms in state legislatures and courtrooms across the country right now. At the top of the week, here are three updates on those necessary fights:

ACLU Supporter, thanks again for staying informed. As an ACLU supporter, we’ll be keeping you up to date with the latest from our fight – bringing our communities’ collective movement right to your inbox every week.

Stay tuned,

The ACLU Team

On April 25, Defendant Trump will plead his case to the Supreme Court. He will argue that he should be immune from prosecution for his crimes against democracy and the American people because… he was president.

Make it make sense. Attacking democracy should be especially unacceptable for a sitting President (it’s giving big coup energy, to us)— chip in $25 to power our resistance organizing.

In our opinion, the president should be held to a higher standard; however, Defendant Trump’s specialty is lowering the bar, so this argument is actually on brand.

Recent polls show that a very slim majority of Americans support SCOTUS’s decision to allow Trump on the ballot, however, most of us think that Trump should be accountable for his crimes. Under no circumstances should he be granted immunity from prosecution.

Can you chip in $25 to power our resistance organizing?

Time will tell if the court makes the right decision here, or on the recent medication abortion case, or on the upcoming Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act case that is coming up.

What we do know is that change has never come from the Supreme Court. It has always come from people-powered movements that held our government officials, elected and appointed, accountable. If you’re reading this, we know you’re with us, but will you be WITH us?

Can you chip in $25 to power our resistance organizing?

ACLU Supporter,

2024 ACLU
ADVOCACY INSTITUTE

Priority Deadline: April 22

There I was in the heart of D.C. Holding up a pink and blue “Trans People Belong” poster, marching alongside 150 fellow high school students last summer. It was a moment I’ll never forget.

As an intern and a participant in the ACLU’s National Advocacy Institute (NAI), I had spent the past week learning about major ACLU issues alongside other young activists. It was there that I had learned how to organize with and for my trans siblings – and what brought me to this powerful day in the first place.

My name is Kiran, and I’m reaching out to you today to talk about my experience attending the NAI – because the deadline to apply for this year’s program is almost here!

CLU Supporter, the NAI is an annual program that engages high school students like me (and college students, too!) in grassroots organizing, professional advocacy, and legal activism.

To prepare for the rally last summer, we learned about the principles of organizing and the escalation of anti-trans bills at large. Chase Strangio, deputy director for transgender justice with the ACLU’s LGBTQ & HIV Project, taught us how this legislation harms young people – whether by not allowing trans kids to use the bathroom and receive gender-affirming care or by banning drag queens from reading to children.

After seven days of learning, I was chanting in front of Capitol Hill. I cannot tell you what the whole experience meant to me.

ACLU Supporter, I mean it, if you’re a young person – or you know a young person – who wants to turn their energy and passion into real action, then I encourage you to apply to this summer’s session of the ACLU National Advocacy Institute before the April 22 priority deadline.

I promise you won’t regret it.

Thank you,

Kiran Yeh

P.S. The ACLU’s National Advocacy Institute has programs this summer for both high school and college-aged students – and financial aid is available to help cover the full cost including program fees. So remember to apply, or remind the passionate young person in your life to apply, before April 22.

We’re looking for passionate and dedicated volunteers to join our team and help make progressive change happen in this critical election year. Will you join hundreds of volunteers across the country to power MoveOn’s work to win this November?

Our volunteer teams work on a range of projects, which include:

  • Providing support for MoveOn members contacting voters in order to win the 2024 election.
  • Conducting research on candidates running for office.
  • Vetting videos sent in by members to tell their story of why they are voting, so we can share them with voters to inspire everyone.
  • And much more!

As a MoveOn volunteer, you’ll be instrumental in driving the movement forward and creating the change we want to see. With your help, we can create real, lasting change, win in November, and make a difference in our communities and country.

Want to support MoveOn’s work? The MAGA movement’s book bans have forced teachers and librarians across the country to remove books from their shelves and censor what young people can learn. MoveOn is fighting back, including by filling a “Banned Bookmobile” with books that the far right has banned and driving it to key cities and towns to raise the visibility of book bans, hand out banned books for free, and bring people together to stop censorship. To keep up the fight against book bans and the MAGA politicians who support them, we need your help.

Will you start a monthly gift to power and sustain MoveOn’s critical work?

Yes, I’ll chip in $5 a month.

No, I’m sorry, I can’t make a monthly donation.

Thanks to Emerge supporters like you, we’ve trained more than 6,000 bold Democratic women to run for office, and right now, more than 1,200 Emerge women are serving in office.

In 2024, we’re seeing an avalanche of hateful and dangerous legislation from MAGA Republicans aimed at attacking our most basic rights, undermining our democracy, and affecting our most vulnerable populations. And every single level of government has a role to play in fighting back.

Our upcoming National boot camp is actively recruiting Democratic women to train to win in November. But it takes significant resources to prepare a new cohort, and we can’t win without your support.

Will you contribute $5 or more today to help us reach our ambitious $30,000 goal to support a new class of Emerge women?

Any donation you can give will go directly toward recruiting and training Democratic women to run for office at all levels of government. These leaders will then go on to put people first in our city budgets, ensure that every vote in every election gets fairly counted, block MAGA right-wing attacks on reproductive rights, and take charge of the direction of our democracy.

We can’t stop now, Kendall. With your help, we can provide the crucial strategy and training needed to shatter the highest glass ceilings in our country.

Will you donate $5 or more today to support our upcoming National boot camp and help Emerge empower MORE Democratic women to lead at every level of office in every state?

Thank you for your support,

Brianna Carmen
Political Director, Emerge

P.S. We’ve extended our deadline for our Boot Camp applications to April 15th! If you or someone you know is interested in applying, they can click here for more information.

Earlier this week, the Florida Supreme Court issued two decisions. The first is a disastrous 6-week abortion ban that will accomplish nothing but putting women’s lives in danger.

The second is that the ballot initiative to enshrine abortion rights will be on the November 2024 ballot.

What does this mean? First, it means that the Florida Supreme Court and the high-level GOP donors they’re beholden to have gone over the cliff like a Wile E. Coyote. Any reasonable person would look at the string of unmitigated losses that the GOP has taken since Dobbs and understand that Americans do not want abortion bans.

These are not reasonable people.

They are bent on stripping freedoms from our communities to make sure that their agenda –  including banning abortion outright – that cannot win at the ballot box, wins the day.

Women’s March was born to fight fascist attacks on our freedoms. We will do it again this year at every ballot. Are you with us?
