WSDCC Wrap-up February 16, 2024

Posted on February 16, 2024

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Hello Democrats,

On the week of the anniversary of the Parkland shooting, we are tragically reminded of the ongoing devastation caused by senseless and preventable gun violence in this country. Our deepest condolences go out to the victims and their families of the shootings in Kansas City, Atlanta, Palm Beach, and too many more just past this week.

Gun violence is a national epidemic, and these tragic events serve as a stark reminder of why we do what we do. We must remember that changing public policy can actually save lives. Although we can’t end every crisis overnight, I’m drawing strength and resilience from the real progress Washington Democrats at every level of government are making to create a safer world for all of us.

Thanks to the hard work of our Democratic elected officials we finally passed common sense legislation to ban the sale of assault weapons in 2023. That, along with a mandatory 10-day waiting period on all gun sales is certain to save countless lives in the years to come. But this problem is far from solved, it is our moral duty to do all we can to fight for gun safety measures on a national scale and work tirelessly to build a safer country for ourselves and our children.

I am proud to say that Washington State serves as a model in this area – but we still have so far to go. Thank you for joining us in this critical work.

ELECTORAL UPDATES

Please join me in cheering Congressman-elect Tom Souzzi’s victory in New York!

We’re thrilled to have another great Democrat in the House and it feels so good to pick up momentum heading into this year’s elections!

WORKING FOR WASHINGTON

First of all – we wanted to wish a huge thank you to everyone who participated in our lobby day in Olympia yesterday! It was terrific to convene a great group of Democrats to participate in the civic process and experience democracy firsthand!

We’re so much stronger as a Party when we all show up and do the work and I’m proud to lead such an engaged group!

Thanks as well to all who came to our grassroots happy hour at Octapas Cafe that evening – it was a great chance to come together, enjoy good food and drinks, and connect with our legislators about all their hard work to pass transformative policy this legislative session and build an even stronger, better Washington.

DEMOCRATS IN THE NEWS

Biden administration looks to expand student loan forgiveness to those facing ‘hardship’

Americans who are struggling to repay federal student loans because of financial hardship could get some of their debt canceled under President Joe Biden’s latest proposal for widespread loan forgiveness.

WA Legislature keeps most of its priority bills alive — so far

At the 2024 session midpoint, lawmakers are focusing on big statewide issues such as clean energy, rent stabilization and police accountability.

Next step in Mayorkas impeachment puts Sen. Patty Murray in spotlight

The likely trial in the U.S. Senate to consider the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will push Washington Sen. Patty Murray into the spotlight.

Keep in touch, stay engaged, and as always, thank you for all you do!

With gratitude,

Chair Shasti Conrad

    Greetings fellow Democrats!

It's getting cold out, so we're going to move indoors for our winter gatherings. This month we'll meet at the round Table Pizza on Court Street in Pasco. November 14 at 6pm Pacific. Come gather with like-minded folks and share some fellowship, food and beverages. As is our normal practice, Tri-City Democrats will order several pizzas to share. We'll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group. Some of our generous members are likely to purchase pitchers of beer to share. If you want the salad bar or soft drinks, you are on your own for those items.

At this writing, we do not have a planned program, but we will have 'Hate Has no Home Here' signs available. We are also in the process of proposing some minor alterations to our bylaws, which we may discuss briefly and possibly vote on.
