Here’s the rundown on the National Guard deployment in Portland:
Less than three weeks ago, Donald Trump tried to send troops into Portland. He federalized Oregon’s Guard, claiming that the city is “war-ravaged” and that “crime is out of control.”
Courts have blocked his order, but the Trump administration is appealing, meaning this fight isn’t over.
Throughout all of this, peaceful protesters in Portland have taken to the streets, refusing to let Trump take over their city.
This is not about safety; it’s a power grab.
And now, Washington could be next. Not surprisingly, the WAGOP is actively encouraging this escalation, calling for National Guard troops in Seattle. WAGOP state chair, Jim Walsh, openly mocked our leaders for standing up to Trump’s threats.
We cannot sit idly by and twiddle our thumbs waiting for what comes next.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell signed executive orders to protect city residents and prepare a legal defense if Trump tries the same here.
We don’t need more division or political posturing from the current administration. Oregon and Washington (and all communities, for that matter) need lower healthcare costs, affordable groceries, more teachers in classrooms, more counselors addressing addiction and mental health, and affordable housing. Federal resources should be directed toward building strong and safe communities, not escalating fear and division through the use of our military.
