Today, we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, honoring the rich cultures, histories, and resilience of the Native communities in Washington that have called our great state home since time immemorial. Our state is home to 29 federally recognized tribes, each with a unique story and enduring strength.
But today is also a reminder that Indigenous communities continue to face serious threats across the country.
Federal actions under the Trump administration have disrupted essential services on tribal lands in Washington and the Northwest. Lease cancellations, funding freezes, and staff cuts have put health care, education, law enforcement, and social services at risk. Tribes like the Yakama Nation and Spokane Tribe face uncertainty in accessing programs that uphold treaty obligations, while urban centers such as the Seattle Indian Health Board struggle to provide critical health, mental health, and substance-abuse services.
As Chair of the Washington State Democrats, I stand in solidarity with Native communities and am committed to ensuring their voices are heard, their sovereignty is respected, and the critical programs they depend on are preserved.
Let us honor their resilience, acknowledge the ongoing challenges they face, and recommit to standing with the Native communities of Washington.
Thank you,
— Chair Shasti Conrad
