I’m outraged.
Last week, the Supreme Court handed down a decision that Jim Crow segregationist George Wallace himself would have celebrated. On the eve of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, they effectively gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, one of the most powerful tools we have to protect fair representation and voting rights in this country.
I can’t overstate how disastrous and dangerous this decision is.
It will now be significantly harder to challenge discriminatory voting laws. It opens the door to maps and systems that silence communities of color. And it sets the stage for the most serious rollback of Black representation since Reconstruction.
Ultimately, this could result in losing 15 seats or more across the country.
While extremists and white supremacists across the country are celebrating, we are refusing to back down.
Washington State Democrats have always been on the front lines of protecting the sacred right to vote, a right that millions marched for, fought for, and died for. And we are going to meet this moment with everything we’ve got: legislation, litigation, and grassroots organizing in every corner of this country.
But we cannot do it without you.
This November, and in every election that follows, we must be louder, stronger, and more organized than ever before. Because the only way to defeat voter suppression is to out-organize it.
And wherever you are, please consider calling your legislators and demanding that they protect the voting rights of voters of color across the country.
We’ve faced moments like this before, and each time, we’ve risen to meet them.
