Right now, Republicans are launching a signature-gathering campaign to put an initiative on the ballot that would gut our election system. They have made it clear this is just step one. Their initiative would require a REAL ID to register to vote — something most Washingtonians don’t currently have — and it’s just the beginning of their effort to dismantle our vote-by-mail system entirely. If they succeed, this dangerous proposal could be sent straight to the legislature when they reconvene in 2026. From there, it could become law.
We cannot allow it to get that far. The REAL ID requirement would create massive new barriers to voting, and the GOP is betting that confusion, cost, and red tape will keep voters from the ballot box.
Washington has one of the highest voter turnout rates in the entire country — more than 75% of voters participated in the 2020 election. That’s because we’ve made voting accessible, secure, and convenient for everyone.
This isn’t about “election security.” It’s about voter suppression. It’s about silencing working people, young people, Black, brown, Indigenous, rural, disabled, and elderly people, and making it harder for them to participate in our democracy.
