Happy Juneteenth!
Today, we commemorate the day that federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. These troops arrived a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. As we honor the end of slavery in the United States, we recognize how far we have come, and how much farther we have to go.
We must stay vigilant. Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are actively trying to strip away the voting, reproductive, and environmental rights of Black Americans, rewrite our history, and reverse the progress we’ve fought so hard for.
Yet even amid these threats, we continue to make history. Just this year, in 2025, Washington state swore in its first statewide Black elected leader in Attorney General Nick Brown. This historic achievement also underscores the systemic oppression and silencing that Black people face in American society.
In celebration, enjoy this special Juneteenth message from Attorney General Nick Brown. You can view it by going here.
Today, and every day, Washington Democrats seek to lift up the joy, vibrancy, beauty, and talent in the Black community as we work to dismantle white supremacy and build a future that embraces everyone regardless of their heritage or skin color.
Thanks all, and have a happy and joyous Juneteenth.
