In the aftermath of what were historically devastating floods here in Washington, I want to share a troubling reality that’s making recovery harder than it should be.
Communities across our state are still reeling from the atmospheric rivers. Families have been displaced. Roads, bridges, and entire neighborhoods have been damaged or destroyed. And while first responders are working hard, long-term recovery depends on something that is fully at risk: a fully staffed, fully functioning FEMA.
New reports reveal plans within the Trump administration to drastically reduce FEMA’s workforce, including the teams that deploy first after disasters and remain for months or years to assist communities in rebuilding. These aren’t bureaucrats behind desks. These are the individuals who process aid, coordinate housing, transport supplies, and assist families during their most challenging days.
Gutting FEMA doesn’t make disasters disappear. It just means help arrives later, or not at all.
Washington deserves better. Disaster relief should be about need, not politics. And when federal leadership fails to meet the moment, we have to organize, advocate, and fight back.
