WSDCC – February 6, 2026

Posted on February 8, 2026

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Happy Friday, Washington Democrats! Just two days until the Hawks play in the Super Bowl!

(Protestors March During the General Strike)

Thank you to everyone who participated in the General Strike last Friday. Thousands of people around our state took to the streets to protest ICE and protect our neighbors. WA Democrats closed our office and halted all fundraising in solidarity with our peers in Minnesota and around the country.

Black History Month

Happy Black History Month! Washington Democrats honor and recognize the deep contributions of Black Americans to our democracy, to our country and to our state. This month honors Black struggles, experiences, and achievements. We commemorate this month to pay our respects with open arms and solidarity in the struggle for justice. As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the creation of Black History Month, we must remember to celebrate Black History every day, not just during February.

Democrats Fight Back

U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell demanded that the Trump-Vance DOJ give up on its demands to access state voter registration databases. Noting the “apparent ransom” that Attorney General Pam Bondi demands for decreasing ICE presence in Minnesota, the letter is also a response to the lawsuit against Washington state, which has also protected voter privacy from federal overreach. Senator Cantwell also publicly declared, “Democracies don’t grow on trees. They need to be protected, defended, and fought for.” Thank you, Senator Cantwell for fighting for our data privacy and defending the best elections system in the country!

U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal launched the “Monopoly Busters” caucus in Congress this year and held its first field hearing in Seattle last week. Focusing on rising food prices, Congresswoman Jayapal was joined by Governor Bob Ferguson who spoke about his work as Attorney General to block the merger between Albertsons and Kroger. This was not an official Congressional field hearing because Republicans in Congress are too busy carrying water for the Trump-Vance Administration and cutting taxes for billionaires to focus on lowering costs for the working class.

In the state legislature, Senate Bill 5973 is working its way through the halls of Olympia. This legislation would reform the initiative process, ending the exploitative practice of paying signature gatherers “per signature,” which encourages fraud and sharing misinformation. While testimony for SB5973 and its companion in the House (HB2259) are closed, you can still reach out to your legislators to let them know you support these common sense reforms!

Working for Washington

Last Friday, Washington Democrats turned the keys of our social media accounts over to the Washington High School Democrats as they advocated for education funding, environmental protections, and other issues particularly important to young people. I am so proud of these students who are working to represent young voices in our democratic process.

On Monday, Washington State Democratic Committee Members took part in their own advocacy day to support the Millionaire’s Tax, banning masks for law enforcement, funding to meet the needs of low-income children, protecting the right to unionize, opposing the privatization of public schools, and making our tax system less regressive. If you would like to discuss how you can assist the Advocacy Committee, please contact partyaffairs@wa-democrats.org.

With the Big Game on Sunday, Washington Democrats are working with the organization Contra-ICE to ensure we meet this moment and make an impact. I will be down in Santa Clara, working with organizers to build our message that ICE must get OUT of our communities. We are asking everyone to share the above image on your social media networks during the Bad Bunny half time show along with pictures from your Super Bowl parties to show the solidarity we have with our immigrant neighbors, friends, and family members. You can learn more about the efforts here.

When We Count Fellowship
I’m excited to share with you the DNC’s new organizing effort, the When We Count Fellowship. This is a new DNC program to build Democratic voter registration in key states – and you can be part of it. Apply to be a When We Count Fellow and join a national cohort of emerging organizers who will make the difference in upcoming elections. Apply today!

Delegate Election Process for 2026 State Convention
Every two years, Washington Democrats host a state convention for delegates across the state to vote on amendments to the party platform, resolutions, and charter and bylaw amendments. Any self-identified Democrat in Washington state may run to be elected as a delegate to the state convention. I encourage you to run! This year’s Convention will be in Spokane, June 19-21!

Delegates impact our official positions on today’s biggest policy issues, represent their community’s needs and values, connect with leaders from around the state, and teach and learn more about the Washington Democrats alongside other activists and party members.

Anyone willing to publicly identify as a Democrat may run to be a delegate. There is no age limit, but candidates must reside in the legislative district for which they are running to be a delegate in. 1,171 state delegates will be elected alongside 490 alternates from Washington’s 49 legislative districts. State delegates will be elected by their Legislative District Party Organizations (LPOs) to represent their district at the 2026 Washington State Democratic Convention. The Online Delegate Self-Nomination Portal opens on January 1, 2026 at this link. Those with questions should email partyaffairs@wa-democrats.org.

    Stitch & Story Circle

    February 28, 2026  1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Richland Public Library, 955 Northgate Dr, Richland, WA

Join our Indivisible Tri-Cities book and knitting club every month at the Richland Public Library for a warm and lively meetup. All readers and crafters are welcome!

📖Book choices include both fiction and nonfiction that are relevant to our goals of creating a just, inclusive, and equitable society for all. You do not have to read this month's book to join our meetup.

🧶Bring a craft to work on while we chat, or learn a new one from one of our members. You do not have to be a crafter to join our gathering.

👀There's no need to RSVP for a Stitch & Story Circle. This posting will be updated to indicate the exact day of the meetup and chosen book as soon as it's selected, so stay tuned!
