Prior to this, most voters didn’t pay much attention to State Supreme Court races.
This year is different. And we need to keep harping on it because the stakes are high.
Five of Washington’s nine Supreme Court seats will be on the ballot this November. That’s an unusually large number that could shape the direction of our state’s highest court for years to come.
This primary shows just how much the GOP is locked in on securing these seats. Every Republican-endorsed candidate advanced, even though none earned a majority of the vote.
Democrats cannot afford to overlook these races.
The non-GOP candidates, Justices Stephens, Melody, and Angelis, will face their opponents in November, alongside Judge Jaime Hawk, who is running for one of the court’s two open seats without an incumbent.
These races may not get the same attention as congressionals, but the stakes could not be higher. The Washington Supreme Court plays a critical role in protecting our rights and upholding the laws that Washington voters depend on.
And they’re already spending money in these races, with much more expected before Election Day.
We have momentum across Washington. Now we need to protect it, all the way down the ballot.
