Donald Trump is stealing another page from the authoritarian handbook by illegally deploying National Guard service members to Washington, D.C. This reckless move is a chilling assault on our constitutional protections and the rule of law.
His justification is “rising crime”—despite the fact that crime rates in D.C. have fallen 26% in the last year. In reality, it’s another way for him to attack Democratic leaders and cities.
Targeting unhoused people by rounding them up, jailing, or forcibly removing them is a blatant human rights violation, made even more egregious considering that housing is less affordable today because of Trump’s own economic policies.
