For 150 years, the United States has had a simple rule: Anyone born in the United States is an American citizen.
But on January 20, 2025, Donald Trump signed an executive order to end birthright citizenship, putting this simple rule in jeopardy.
Since then, every federal court to review it has struck down Trump’s order as unconstitutional.
And last week, after oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court, a majority of justices appeared likely to do the same.
Washington has been leading this fight from the very beginning. Attorney General Nick Brown has been right there, pushing back, making the case, and standing up for the Constitution and the fundamental promise that if you’re born here, you belong here.
Washington Democrats are proud to be part of that fight. But we know this isn’t over. Not even close.
We need to be ready for whatever comes next.
