Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on laws in West Virginia and Idaho that restrict transgender girls from participating in school sports. Those laws are discriminatory and harmful, but what’s being proposed here in Washington is even worse.
A billionaire-backed initiative that will ultimately be on the general election ballot would require sex verification for any student who wants to play girls’ sports. That could mean invasive genital exams or costly genetic testing for girls as young as 11 just to join a school team. This is not speculation. The language is written directly into the initiative, and it is moving forward.
The timeline has now accelerated. Lawmakers, media, and voters are beginning to pay attention.
