WA Institute for a Democratic Future – June 20, 2025

For those of you I haven’t met yet — hi, I’m Emily.

I’m a lifelong Western Washingtonian who’s spent most of my career in and around politics, communications, and community engagement. I got my start at a regional public affairs firm, worked on Governor Inslee’s first campaign, served as a legislative aide, and eventually represented the 38th District in the Washington State Legislature.

In 2018, I started my consulting firm supporting community organizations with public engagement and strategy. I’ve also had the honor of serving as President of the National Women’s Political Caucus of Washington, guiding the organization through the early days of the pandemic. And now, I get to serve as Executive Director of the Washington Institute for a Democratic Future, helping shape and support the next generation of progressive leaders across our state.

There’s a question we used to ask our fellows—back when I was one, too: Why are you a Democrat?

My answer in 2013 was… well, very twentysomething me. A little too much sparkle and optimism, which earned me the nickname “Wickanna” on the Inslee campaign. But the question still holds power, and I’ve been thinking about it again, especially now, leading this incredible program.

Why am I a Democrat?

Because of people like you.

I didn’t grow up in a Democratic household, but my path was shaped by the people who challenged me, welcomed me, and helped me grow. It was the classmates, mentors, and WAIDF community who taught me that politics could be both joyful and just. And that it’s about showing up, doing the work, and doing it together.

And now, I’m proud to be in a position where I get to help build that community for others. This isn’t just a job, it’s a mission. And here’s what I’m focused on in the year ahead:

1. Growing our organizational budget to $300,000
   We can’t develop strong Democratic leaders if we don’t live our values. That means paying a living wage, sustaining our program with intention, and building something that lasts—not just for our current fellows, but for those who will follow them and for the staff who help make it all possible.
    
2. Developing and implementing a strategic plan
   Our 30th cohort will graduate in 2027 (!), and we’re using this moment to think BIG. What will our next decade look like? What does our party need? What does leadership look like in this evolving political landscape? We’re building a roadmap for this organization, our movement, and the change we want to see.
    
3. Deepening and expanding our partnerships
   None of us can do this alone. WAIDF has never been just about the fellows or the alumni, it’s about the entire progressive ecosystem that surrounds and sustains this work. We’re building the infrastructure that keeps this party strong, connected, and prepared for what’s next.
    
4. And finally — we’re going to have fun
   Because joy is part of the resistance. Community is part of the work. If we’re going to take on the chaos of today’s political landscape, we need each other. And we need to laugh, dance, cheer, and celebrate our wins together along the way.

This work is big, yes — but so are we. And the reason I believe in it is because I believe in you.

WAIDF isn’t just a training program, it’s a launchpad for progressive change. It’s a place to grow, challenge yourself, and find your people. Thank you for letting me be part of this work. That’s why I’m spending this summer traveling across the state—strengthening relationships, reconnecting with alums, and building new partnerships along the way.
