This summer, reports uncovered¹ that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) quietly opened the door for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to access the health records of millions of Americans, including those enrolled in Washington’s low-income healthcare program for immigrants, Apple Health (Medicaid) Expansion.
This isn’t just a breach of trust, it’s a threat to our communities’ safety, health, and right to exist without fear — and we refuse to be silent on this. While a federal judge has ordered this data-sharing to stop², the harm is done and our communities deserve answers and long-term safeguards.
Join us at the Our Health, Our Data Community Forum on Wed. October 15, to hear what this means for not just immigrants, but every Washingtonian whose personal info was shared without consent. Hosted by the Health Equity for Immigrants Campaign (HEIC), a coalition of organizations and individuals dedicated to improving the health and well-being of immigrant communities, this bilingual event will help break down what happened, what’s being done, and how you can help us protect our right to safe, secure healthcare.
During this session, we’ll share what we’re hearing from state and local agencies, including recent updates about how our data is at risk. There will be space for community members to ask questions and we’ll share how WAISN and our partners are responding to the threats against our communities and how you can join us in this fight.

Este verano, unos informes revelaron¹ que el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos (HHS, por sus siglas en inglés) permitió discretamente que el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) accediera a los expedientes médicos de millones de estadounidenses, incluidos los inscritos en el programa de atención médica para inmigrantes con bajos ingresos de Washington, Expansión de Apple Health (Medicaid).
Esto no es solo una falta de confianza, es una amenaza para la seguridad, la salud y el derecho de nuestras comunidades a vivir sin miedo, y no vamos a quedarnos callados. Aunque un juez federal ordenó que se dejara de compartir estos datos², el daño ya está hecho y nuestras comunidades merecen respuestas y protecciones a largo plazo.
