WA Immigrant Solidarity Network – March 31, 2025

Posted on March 31, 2025

[Español Abajo]

Today, on International Transgender Day of Visibility, we do more than recognize the existence of transgender people. We honor their brilliance, their joy, their labor, and their revolutionary contributions to our movements for liberation.

At WAISN, we know that trans visibility is not enough. Visibility without safety, without justice, and without love means little in a world where systems of violence continue to target people who dare to live beyond imposed gender norms.

As a trans, Colombia-Latina immigrant, I carry the truth of what it means to live at these intersections: to have survived systems that were never built for me and still rise, to lead with love and compassion. Likewise, WAISN is rooted in this truth: we are a network led by queer and trans immigrants, fighting for our communities, especially those most at risk of detention, displacement, and erasure.

We launched the #EndTransDetention campaign in 2020, organizing joy-filled resistance in the streets alongside drag artists, because we refuse to let our people be forgotten or tokenized. We stand for, and with, those who are so often pushed to the margins: queer and trans immigrants navigating a hostile world with audacious courage.

Our team shows up for Trans Pride year after year, not just in celebration, but in action — distributing Know Your Rights resources and holding space for healing, grounded in a vision where trans people are not just visible—but centered and cared for.

We do this work because we know that the attacks on immigrants, the bans on gender-affirming care, and the criminalization of drag and protest are not isolated. But we are not helpless, we are organized, and we are loved.

This Trans Day of Visibility, let’s recommit to building movements where trans people, especially trans immigrants, are not only safe, but free. Let’s celebrate our siblings not only as symbols of resistance, but as co-creators of a future rooted in love and justice.

In that spirit, I invite you to support some other trans-led organizations in Washington fighting for liberation:

  • UTOPIA Washington– creating spaces for Pacific Islander LGBTQIA+ people to thrive through healing, leadership, and self-determination.
  • Lavender Rights Project – advancing Black trans liberation through intersectional legal advocacy and community power-building.

Our liberation is collective, it will not come from above: it will come from all of us working together. And in this movement for justice, trans leadership is not a gesture, it’s a necessity.

In community,

Catalina Velasquez

[English Above]

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, support for public health policies has gradually declined. At the federal level certain policies and practices regarding vaccines have been thrown into question.

Vaccine proponents note the long-time and widespread benefits of the traditional MMR vaccine; vaccine skeptics generally insist it causes autism. Some say the approval process (Operation Warp Speed for Covid-19) was either rushed or rigged; others say the process was instrumental in reducing suffering and saved the lives of millions of people.
