WA Immigrant Solidarity Network – April 17, 2026

Posted on April 17, 2026

[Español Abajo]

The Trump administration could evict nearly 80,000 people unless we speak out against a proposed change in who can access subsidized housing.

For decades, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has allowed people living in mixed-status households to access federal housing subsidies. Now, the Trump administration has proposed a new rule that would ban entire families from federally subsidized housing programs if even one person in the household cannot provide proof of eligible immigration status.

This proposed rule is a continuation of the anti-immigrant myth accusing non-citizens of overutilizing social support programs. In reality, this rule will only serve to punish individuals and families living in mixed-status households by revoking their access to this critical support.

This proposal would have far-reaching effects, impacting any household currently living in HUD-funded housing with a family member who is undocumented or who has an immigration status that makes them ineligible to receive HUD assistance, such as DACA, TPS, student visas, work visas, or visas for survivors of violence.

The Trump administration is trying to blame the housing crisis on immigrants, but this proposal would only serve to force thousands of families—including many of the 173,000 Washingtonians who live in subsidized housing—to choose between separating to keep some members housed or staying together, facing homelessness and the long-term consequences that come with it.

And during a legitimate housing crisis, this rule would actually reduce funds for HUD housing assistance for everyone, as it diverts scarce resources away from providing affordable housing, to verifying tenants’ citizenship status.

HUD is accepting public comments on this rule until Tuesday, April 21. Will you join us in submitting a comment demanding that this proposal be withdrawn? Any person, group, or organization can submit a comment and comments may be submitted anonymously.

The good news is that we’ve been here before, and we won. The Trump administration tried this once during his first term, but thousands of us came together across the country to push back, and the rule was withdrawn before it could take effect.

That’s why our voices matter right now. Federal agencies like HUD depend on public comments to hear how their policies and actions might affect us, and they are required by law to read and consider the comments they receive.

Each and every comment can make a difference in whether thousands of mixed-status families can stay together in their homes.

SUBMIT A COMMENT TO WITHDRAW THIS RULE

Thank you for taking action with us.

In solidarity,

The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network

P.S. If you’re able, please share this action with your network on Facebook and Instagram to ensure everyone who cares about this is heard before the April 21 deadline!
