Showing Up for Racial Justice – July 1, 2026

This past weekend, SURJ members across the Midwest met up in Lansing, Michigan for “Love & Rigor Organizing Training Program” — the first of our four in-person training events this summer. One attendee had only left the state of Iowa once before this training, and drove seven hours to be with us. Some attendees knocked doors for the first time ever.

And each person in the room signed up to run the training themselves in their local community so that SURJ members across the country are ready to win and defend the Midterm elections — and build a bigger base of anti-racist white organizers along the way.

At the training in Lansing, we went deep on SURJ’s political analysis of this moment, our vision for where we’re going, and the role we play as anti-racist white organizers. We heard from and then knocked doors for Will Lawrence, a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement and a SURJ-endorsed candidate who is running for Congress in Michigan. And we dove deep into the training curriculum participants commit to bringing back to their own communities.

In Lansing, every group that joined us committed to bringing the training back to their communities! Across the four SURJ National trainings, our goal is to launch 50 more trainings across the country and reach thousands more white people in their communities.
