My toddler is going to turn four in January. I don’t want him to ever remember a time that we weren’t doing justice work as a family. When he looks back on these years, I want it to be clear that we were taking action to build towards a different world.
I’ve known about SURJ for many years, but I didn’t officially join until after this year’s post-election call. At that moment, I needed someone to help me know exactly where to point my energy. I knew if I didn’t do something, I would become despondent. So on that call, I said yes to SURJ. My husband Reese and I committed to hosting a mass meeting and became National Members.
I’m proud to be one of the nearly 2,000 SURJ National Members! Right now we’re in the midst of our National Membership Drive and our goal is to add 500 new names to our roster– and we’re already at 300! You have already take action this year with SURJ– thank you! Today, can you add on a monthly gift to your action-commitment and join me as an official member?
Being a National Member means we give monthly. And I know where my money is going: to build this bigger movement. To bringing in new people like me. To coaching folks on how to host meetings in their communities or how to run phone banks. To things I care about and am proud to support.
It also means taking action. When we hosted our mass meeting, we had 16 people show up and only knew one of them! We have family in our area, but we’ve been missing community connections locally. With the Trump presidency on the horizon, we want to focus our energy locally and build a SURJ community we can turn to in the years ahead.
I’m making SURJ my movement home partly because I want to show my kid that building a loving community means showing up for each other and doing your best. SURJ models how: we’re not going to get it “right” or “perfect” all the time. But that cannot stop us from moving forward.
SURJ reminds me that it’s my role to show up and try. That’s what matters today.
I hope you’ll join me and my family in this imperfect, ongoing, and powerful work and sign on as a SURJ National Member.
In community,
Alison
