Dear friends,
Tomorrow morning (Thursday, February 6) at 10:00am PST, in federal district court, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) and the State of Washington will be presenting arguments in support of their challenges to President Trump’s Executive Order seeking to eliminate birthright citizenship for all those who do not have a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident parent.
NWIRP’s lawsuit, filed on behalf of three pregnant women and a proposed class of community members targeted by the Executive Order, was consolidated with the State of Washington’s lawsuit into a single case. Together they will be asking Judge Couhenour to indefinitely extend his temporary order preventing the government from moving forward with its effort to effectively rewrite the constitution in order to eliminate birthright citizenship.
This Executive Order presents a fundamental attack on the integrity of our democracy. The President does not have the authority to disregard the Constitution, and its guarantee of birthright citizenship. The Citizenship Clause was enshrined in the Constitution specifically to ensure that groups of citizens could not be deprived of their place in our society based upon changing political tides.
Those interested can listen to the arguments by using the link below or by visiting https://www.youtube.com/live/jbFNoCkakV0
Thank you for your continued support,

Malou Chávez (she/her/ella)
Executive Director
