I’m Dr. Grace Shih, a family physician and a practicing primary care doctor. For 13 years, I’ve cared for patients across our state—including many families and LGBTQ+ youth.
I’m writing today because, as a doctor, I understand that ballot measures IL26-001 and IL26-638 would cause real harm to children and families in Washington. I encourage you to join me in opposing these measures by supporting No Hate in WA State now.
Washington is already facing major challenges with patient access to care. Many Washington families—especially those in rural or underserved areas—struggle to find a regular doctor at all. The last thing we should be doing is adding new, unnecessary, and complicated medical hurdles, especially for kids who already face stigma.
IL26-638 would require clinicians to perform medically unnecessary evaluations. That’s not health care—and it directly conflicts with our ethical duty to do no harm. The current WIAA sports form does not require sex or gender verification. These initiatives would change that.
The consequences go beyond school sports. For many students, participating in school athletics is much more than a game: it’s a community where they make their closest friends, challenge themselves, and grow their self-confidence. If parents or students fear bureaucratic or invasive requirements just to sign up, some kids could be discouraged or unable to participate because of logistical hurdles. That would be holding our kids back from their own potential.
As a professor and physician, I prioritize evidence, ethics, and patient well-being. These measures undermine all three.
