American soccer superstar and Washingtonian Megan Rapinoe is speaking out against ballot measure I-638.
First, in her Marie Claire op-ed, Rapinoe said, “In their witch hunt for a few trans kids in the entire state who play school sports, I-638’s backers will drive thousands of girls out of sports because their parents cannot afford the necessary testing or refuse to submit their daughters to genital inspections…These policies make all girls and women less safe. They create new ways to question and control women and girls, and that affects all of us.”
Then on ABC’s The View, she said, “There’s a [initiative] in Washington happening right now that’s gonna require all girls just, like, full stop to go through a sex test, an invasive examination of their genitals to see if they’re a woman… First it was nobody likes women’s sports, or nobody wants to watch it. There was abuse happening and nobody seemed to care. Now all of a sudden, we’re going to use a vulnerable group of people in the trans community to be like, oh we’re protecting women’s sports and we care so much about it, when the Heritage Foundation is now going to go after Title IX.”
As one of the most iconic and influential athletes of our time, Megan knows that her words and the positions she takes matter.
Now she’s getting lots of hate for speaking out. That’s why we want to tell Rapinoe—THANK YOU! We’re collecting signatures for our public letter to Megan Rapinoe, expressing our deepest gratitude and thanks for using her powerful voice to come out against I-638.
Washington’s I-638 will require all girls as young as 8 to undergo invasive genital exams, DNA testing, or hormone testing just to play school sports, while boys are exempt. We already know how poorly written and harmful I-638 is. To have Megan Rapinoe on our side is truly a game-changer for our campaign.
Thanks,
