No Hate in Washington State – August 23, 2026

I’m Chris Reykdal, Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction.

I was born and raised in Snohomish, the youngest of eight kids. It was public education that gave me a way out of poverty—I was the first person in my family to go straight to college, and I paid for it with scholarships, grants, loans, and more part-time jobs than I can count. 

While I certainly worked my tail off, I know that I didn’t do it alone. I am proof of what a state and a community can do when they commit to giving every kid a real shot and supporting them from the start.

It’s why I’ve spent my entire career in public education. I started as a classroom teacher, served on a local school board, spent 14 years as an executive in our state’s community and technical college system, six years in the State Legislature, and the last eight as your State Superintendent. 

I’ve seen this system from nearly every angle.

Right now, that system—and the kids it serves—are under attack. Even as President Trump and the U.S. Department of Education target our students, educators, and public schools with budget cuts and civil rights roll-backs, Washington is holding the line and keeping kids at the center of our work.

This November, Initiatives 001 and 638 are coming after our schools and our students. I stand firmly against both.

No Hate in WA State is working tirelessly to keep our schools safe for all our students and protect all our girls from unnecessary invasive exams to participate in school sports. Will you make a donation today to help them defeat I-001 and I-638?

I-001 would strip away common-sense protections for at-risk students at a moment when we’ve made real progress on youth mental health—rolling back the very safeguards that help vulnerable kids stay safe and stay in school.

I-638 would impose the most extreme school sports ban in the country, adding invasive new barriers that target all our girl student-athletes and put transgender kids at risk of being singled out and outed in their own schools.

As someone who has spent their career supporting students, parents, and educators, I know I-001 and I-638 would cause tremendous harm.

We cannot allow our schools and our student-athletes to become victims of divisiveness and political gamesmanship. That’s why I’m asking you to join me in supporting No Hate in WA State and defeating Initiatives 001 and 638 this November.
