It’s Megan Rapinoe.
As a two-time World Cup and Olympic Gold Medal winner, I’ve spent much of my life on a soccer field, and I know firsthand what sports can mean to a young person. Sports can give you confidence. They can introduce you to your closest friends. They can teach you how to fight for something bigger than yourself.
I-638 is being presented as protection for girls in sports. It’s the opposite. If passed, I-638 will force girls into invasive medical exams and create new barriers to participation. After-school sports will be less welcoming, more expensive, and will single out some of our most vulnerable young people, especially girls who don’t fit the stereotype of what a girl should look like.
I’ve spent years fighting for women and girls to have more opportunities in sports, not fewer. I believe every girl should be able to walk onto a field, step onto a court, or join a team without having to prove that she belongs there. And I believe trans kids deserve that same opportunity.
This fight is bigger than sports. It’s about what kind of communities we want to build and whether we’re going to let fear and discrimination determine who gets to participate in them. Every kid deserves the chance to grow up feeling safe, supported, and accepted for who they are.
No Hate in WA State is organizing across Washington, reaching voters, training volunteers, and making sure Washingtonians understand what’s really at stake with 638
Their grassroots organizing takes resources, and they need our help. This is the moment when every dollar can reach another voter, train another volunteer, or bring another person into this fight.
I’m proud to stand alongside the trans kids, families, athletes, educators, and Washingtonians who are fighting back.
Thank you,
Megan Rapinoe
