Yesterday, I had my first debate with my Republican opponent Pete Serrano, hosted by the Association of Washington Businesses. I was grateful to share my vision for an Attorney’s General office that stands up for all Washingtonians — from protecting consumer rights to advocating for fair business practices.
But here’s the truth: Pete Serrano threatens our fundamental rights and freedoms here in Washington.
Washington leads the nation in common-sense gun safety laws, LGBTQ+ rights, protections for abortion providers and people seeking reproductive health care, and so much more. We’ve been at the forefront of defending democracy — and we need an Attorney General who will stand up for Washington, not give credence to far-right extremism.
At yesterday’s debate, Serrano said he did not believe the Attorney General’s office should play any role in advancing gun safety. I was shocked — and I let Serrano know it. We already knew he would roll back crucial gun safety protections, including bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. But to actively refuse to make Washington safer? That’s disqualifying.
It’s clear that Serrano is wholly inexperienced in how to actually address criminal justice and public safety, a cornerstone of the office we’re both running to hold. He is unfit to serve as Attorney General — and tonight, we’re facing off again at Seattle Central College for the most important debate yet.
No matter what you hear from my opponent tonight, I want you to hear this from me: I will always fight for human rights and our democracy. I will always fight for you. And I will always fight to keep Washingtonians safe.
Thank you!
— Nick
