Today is Mother’s Day, so I wanted to take a moment to tell you a little bit about my extraordinary mom, Pat.
My mom helped teach me the importance of public service. She grew up in a blue-collar family in Missouri, was the first in her family to go to college, and spent her career serving the public.
My mom served our country as an Army nurse, including at Walter Reed Medical Center, where she and my dad met. They got married one year after the Supreme Court legalized interracial marriage, and still faced serious challenges and discrimination. Despite this, she always filled our home with love and support. And she raised me to never judge a book by its cover and to always give a damn about your family, your community, and those who need help.
My mom also never missed a soccer or football game that I played in, and took me camping every summer. She had my back no matter what. I am incredibly grateful for her and all the sacrifices she and my dad made to ensure I could achieve my dreams. I’m lucky to have a mom like her.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we must also advocate for change to help moms thrive, like prioritizing maternal health and implementing policies to better the lives of working families. Every mom deserves to have more rights and resources than their own mothers and grandmothers, not fewer.
Thanks for taking the time to read about my incredible mom.
Best,
Nick
