In a 6-3 ruling this week, the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, the main legal tool for challenging racially discriminatory redistricting. Justice Kagan’s dissent called the consequences “far-reaching and grave.” Republican-led states can now start eliminating the majority-Black and Latino districts that have been a cornerstone of Democratic representation for decades. (Not that Democrats are about to roll over. See under “possible forever redistricting war”.)
And that was just Wednesday. Over the weekend, there was a third assassination attempt on the President at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which he responded to by doubling down on the ballroom, now approaching $400M, twice what it was supposed to. He also went after Jimmy Kimmel, because nothing says democracy like silencing comedians. Meanwhile, the Iran war, also something no one asked for and which we are not exactly winning, has cost an estimated $25B – so far.
Here’s what else this administration and their enablers would rather you not look at: a new poll out of Texas has Democrat James Talarico leading both John Cornyn and Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race. No Democrat has won statewide in Texas since 1994, but the margin keeps closing and downballot races are being won by candidates just like the NDTC learners who are making a difference every cycle. That’s exactly what we train people to do.

Rep. Daniel Webster, FL-R, won’t seek re-election, the first casualty of the redistricting war his own party started. Democrats need to be ready to compete in every district that redistricting shakes loose.
Why this story matters:
Governor DeSantis is pushing a map that would flip Florida from 20-8 to a potential 24-4 GOP advantage. Even Republicans think it could backfire.
Why this story matters:
Certification is blocked and the Virginia Supreme Court hasn’t ruled yet. If Virginia’s win gets thrown out and Gov. DeSantis of Florida succeeds, Republicans net around seven seats from this entire fight..
