Here’s why we made it, and why the timing matters.
AI needs staggering amounts of water and electricity—and it’s driving up our utility bills. One study shows that in states with a high concentration of data centers like Virginia, electricity prices have increased by up to 267% over the last five years.1
And here’s who’s cashing in while these energy- and water-hogging data centers pollute your drinking water and cause your utility bills go through the roof: Forbes counted 468 tech billionaires on its 2026 list, worth a record $4.8 trillion combined—up $1.1 trillion in a single year, almost entirely on the strength of the AI boom.2
That’s more than a trillion dollars in new wealth for a few hundred people, built substantially on data centers sitting in communities like yours, while the rest of us struggle with sky-high prices at the gas pump and grocery store.
To add fuel to the fire, here’s what Donald Trump said on social media: “The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor.”3
Translation: If your community doesn’t want its water table drained, its electricity bills spiked, and its farmland paved over to feed AI models—you’re the problem.
