The title of the new research from Harvard captures the heart of it: “The Resistance Reaches into Trump Country.”2
The researchers found that anti-Trump protests are more geographically diverse and persistent than in Trump’s first term and now reach into deep-red Trump country.3 In fact, the researchers show that the median county protesting Trump cast more votes for Trump in 2024 than for Kamala Harris.4 That’s not a typo.

Protests have occurred in over 60% of U.S. counties—the most geographically widespread in all of U.S. history.5 In Kingsport, Tennessee—a county Trump won by 54 points—2,000 people lined nearly an entire mile of a downtown street at the first No Kings protest in June. In the small town of Gillette, Wyoming, 175 people protested in a county where Trump won 88% of the vote.6
As Rachel Maddow explains, if you want your resistance movement to work and wield power, it needs to be big, sustained, and nonviolent, and it needs to take root in new places where new people will join you.7
