Dear MoveOn member,
As MoveOn’s executive director, I want to personally thank you for your steadfast support for MoveOn and give you an update on our 2024 election campaign and the work we are doing to prepare for any outcome after Election Day.
I want to be clear: I believe that, with this grassroots people-powered movement behind us, Vice President Harris will be our next president.
But I have also been closely tracking the plans being put in place by Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans to contest the results and attempt to overthrow the election if they lose. And, you need to know that these plans are significantly more developed and sophisticated than what we saw in the aftermath of the 2020 election.
We are prepared for the distinct possibility that, no matter the results, Trump will declare himself the winner on election night. And his team is organized and ready to immediately launch dozens of lawsuits, tap into election denier allies on local election boards to delay or stop vote certification, appeal a Harris victory to the Supreme Court, and much more.1
That’s why, several months ago, I, along with several members of our senior team, started to put preparations in place to ensure we are ready to keep up the fight to protect our democracy, counter MAGA efforts to sabotage election results, and make sure that every vote is counted.
These plans are now in place, and I will tell you more about them below, but I need to be upfront with you that we have one serious roadblock to implementing these plans. Our fundraising has been significantly slower than in previous election years, especially when it comes to the monthly recurring donations we rely on to plan for the future. We could be in this fight all the way up until the inauguration, and I am very concerned that we will not have the funding to prepare for what comes next and execute that plan for however long it takes.
I know you are being asked for a lot right now, but I can assure you that our work to not only win this election but also prepare to immediately take action if Trump attempts to overthrow the results is uniquely important in these critical final days.
The stakes of this moment could not be higher, which is why I am humbly asking if you can chip in $5 a month, or whatever you can afford, to help ensure that MoveOn not only has the funds to run our full election program all the way through Election Day but also has the resources to organize our members to defend democracy, stop any election sabotage, and advance a people-first agenda no matter what happens after Election Day.

We all remember Trump’s sham lawsuits and lies after the 2020 election, all culminating in the deadly attempted coup on January 6, 2021.
That may have just been the trial run. That’s why MoveOn’s preparations to respond to any attempted sabotage are so important.
We have worked in close partnership with other pro-democracy experts and allies to make sure any actions we need to take after Election Day are strategic and impactful. We will be ready to take action en masse, drive tens of thousands of calls to Congress or state and local governments if they attempt to throw out votes or refuse to certify results, run ads to counter any conspiracy or misinformation pushed by Trump and MAGA allies, and more.
The difficult part is, we don’t yet know exactly what Trump could do, how many states might be targeted, or how long these efforts will go on. That is why we need to ensure that we have the funds to be able to funnel resources wherever they are needed and possibly keep the work going all the way until January 20, 2025.
Monthly donations from MoveOn members like you allow me to confidently plan for campaigning efforts that could stretch on for weeks or months by ensuring that we will have the funds to keep the program running for as long as it takes. And I know that protecting our democracy from attempts by Donald Trump to sabotage this election is just one of those programs.

Once again, Trump has already refused to say that he will accept the outcome of the election or that he will disavow political violence.2,3 And just like in 2020, if Vice President Harris wins, we can anticipate multiple inflection moments between Election Day and inauguration, where Trump may try to overthrow the results.
We cannot, and will not, allow that to happen. But that may require massive, sustained efforts by MoveOn and others to push back on disinformation, ensure that election officials are not intimidated into doing Trump’s bidding, put pressure on Congress to follow the will of the people, and much, much more. Your generosity will go to work reaching voters in this critical final stretch of the election, as well as making sure that no matter what happens following the election, our democracy remains and we can build a country that works for all of us.
