Dear MoveOn member,
It’s easy to feel depressed, discouraged, and furious in response to the cruelty of Donald Trump and the people around him.
But, I’m seeing what may be a turn in the tide. I’ll explain, but I want to make clear that this progress is happening only as a result of a growing number of us speaking out. Also, this progress is fragile, and we need your help to sustain it.
First, Elon Musk had to exit Trump world because most Americans had become infuriated by Musk’s attacks on things they value, like veterans’ benefits and Social Security. Musk had become a huge political liability.
I call this progress.
Second, the nation’s major trade court has found that Trump doesn’t have authority to impose tariffs (i.e., taxes) on American consumers. Although a court of appeals has temporarily paused the ruling, it makes mincemeat out of Trump’s attempts to “negotiate” tariffs with other nations. Why negotiate when Trump may well lose his authority?
I call this progress too.
And third, Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill”—which, if enacted, would be the largest redistribution of income in American history, from the poor and working class to the rich and ruling class—is getting bogged down in the Senate.
Even more progress.
But the path forward from here is fraught, because that massive bill would undo decades of progress in one fell swoop, undermining Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, our nation’s only plan to combat climate change, and so much more—all to further enrich the very wealthiest in our nation with even more tax breaks. And it would embolden Trump and his cronies like never before. Which, to be quite honest, is terrifying to me.
To get to the brass tacks of it, and stick with me for a moment on this, Trump needs only Republican votes to pass the bill, under special rules for budget bills. His plan is to twist enough Republican arms at the 11th hour to pass the bill. We CANNOT let that happen.
That’s where MoveOn comes in.
MoveOn is running an incredibly smart and strategic nationwide campaign to stop the bill, using a combination of on-the-ground organizing and hard-hitting billboard and ads campaigns. I’ve been very impressed. Their strategy is working. But to expand this campaign and reach more people, MoveOn urgently needs your support.

House Republicans passed the budget bill by a single vote, and that’s a big opportunity for us. The Senate is now considering it, and Trump wants the bill on his desk by July 4—meaning time could be running out. MoveOn’s first goal is to slow down the bill, giving us crucial time to help Americans understand how it would harm them and their neighbors, to grow the opposition and our coalition, and to bring people together to stop it.
MoveOn is also working around the clock to hold accountable those House Republicans in moderate or blue districts who voted for the bill, so that they can’t possibly vote for it a second time when it comes back from the Senate for a final vote. To do this, MoveOn has put up hard-hitting billboards in the districts of vulnerable House Republicans and is plastering social media with a powerful ad campaign in those districts. And this week, they’ve launched organizing teams on the ground in each of the districts to help get many more people involved and speaking out, organize protests and high-visibility events, and to be everywhere in the local news, fighting back and making clear that these House Republicans stand to lose their seats for betraying their own constituents.
So, we’ve been making progress. But to sustain it, we urgently need your help. Will you join us?
