Dear fellow MoveOn member,
This is Cheryl Zando, MoveOn’s budget chief. I rarely write emails to all MoveOn members, and unfortunately I don’t have good news to share.
As chief operating officer, it’s my job to oversee MoveOn’s budgets, and after reviewing the books for the first half of the year, I’m worried. We’re seriously below our fundraising projections at this point, and if we don’t meet our goals—fast—I may be forced to cut some of our voter contact plans for the year.
This couldn’t be happening at a worse time.
November’s midterm elections are fast approaching (we’re already at the halfway point of 2026), and dozens of Donald Trump’s puppets are running for key offices that will determine control of Congress.
That’s why, when MoveOn’s elections team proposed a $27 million effort designed to defeat them by blowout margins and elect progressive fighters, I enthusiastically gave it the green light … assuming that we’d meet our fundraising benchmarks as the year went on.
Now is when the rubber hits the road. If we’re going to continue with this ambitious plan, we need our grassroots members to step up—because MoveOn isn’t powered by the billionaire class.
Midterm elections are monumentally important.
I remember when President Obama was in the White House and Democrats lost control of Congress in both 2010 and 2014.
We’re still living with the fallout today. If Democrats hadn’t lost those midterm elections, Senator Mitch McConnell wouldn’t have been able to steal a Supreme Court seat and ram through the far-right majority we have now. Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, and Neil Gorsuch wouldn’t be on the Supreme Court.
Now the stakes are even higher. Under Trump and Republicans in Congress, our country is barreling toward fascism. A loss would be catastrophic.
I’m so proud of the work our team is doing to fight back.
But for our campaign to fire on all cylinders on Election Day, we need to be building that operation right now. We don’t have much room for error, and as a grassroots-funded nonprofit, we rely on donations from activists like you to power our work.
I don’t want to go back to our elections team and tell them we must scale back our plans.
Thanks for all you do.
–Cheryl Zando, Chief Operating Officer
