Hey, fellow MoveOn member!
If my count is correct, I’ve started around 80 petitions on MoveOn to date. I’m a grassroots organizer in Pennsylvania fighting the fossil fuel industry. My passion for saving our planet led me to found an organization called Berks Gas Truth back in 2010. I have been fortunate to work with many regional, state, national, and even international partners on a wide range of issues.
MoveOn’s free petition platform has proven to be an invaluable tool, but if you had told me that when I was just getting started, I wouldn’t have believed it. I admit it: I was a petition skeptic. But I learned pretty quickly that petitions are like any other tool in the activist toolbox. If they’re used strategically, they can be powerful. I’ve certainly seen petitions move decision-makers. For instance, our petitions have helped achieve a ban on fracking in the Delaware River Basin and prevent the Coast Guard from allowing radioactive drilling waste to be sent on barges down the Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela rivers. Your petition could be next!
Petitions are also valuable tools for alerting people to issues they may never hear about on the news. Right now, we’ve collected nearly 25,000 signatures on a petition calling for the U.S. Forest Service to rethink its plans to allow CO2 sequestration in our national forests and grasslands. It’s a hugely important story that has received little attention in the national press.
More than just about submitting your petition, MoveOn’s free petition platform is also an important organizing tool. Thanks to MoveOn’s platform, I can keep communicating with people who sign my petitions to let them know about next steps in our campaign and ask them to take action on other petitions that they might want to be aware of and support.
