ICE is abusive, violent, and leaves all of us less safe. Sign the petition for accountability.
Dear MoveOn member,
Johan Sebastián, a 25-year-old father, was driving near his home in Maine on his way to work when ICE agents shot and killed him. A neighbor watched Johan’s wife collapse to her knees over his body. Their 3-year-old daughter stood beside her, crying, wearing a little pink backpack.1
The agent who pulled the trigger, David Brouillette, should never have been carrying a badge and a gun. Multiple relatives have spoken up about his long history of violent behavior. They’ve said Brouillette left a woman a voicemail telling her that someone should slit her throat. And that he mocked an ex-wife for seeking a restraining order and suggested she and other women in her family should die.2
Despite all this, the Department of Homeland Security handed him a weapon and sent him out to patrol our streets.
Johan deserved to live and see his daughter grow up. Immigrant families should not have to live in fear that they will be broken up by deportation or at the hands of ICE. At least 10 people have died in encounters with ICE agents since Trump launched his enforcement crackdown, and not a single agent has been charged.3
This month in Houston, an ICE agent—whose name has been withheld by ICE—brutally shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a hardworking husband and father who was wrongly profiled on his way to work.4 In January, ICE agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis murdered Renee Good through the windshield of her car. He is still on the job today.5
Families are being shattered, and the message being sent is that immigrant lives, and working families’ lives, are completely expendable.
Fire violent ICE agent David Brouillette—and charge him!
ICE has been given expanded budgets, expanded authority, and almost zero accountability, and the result is a growing number of immigrants and working people who never should have died.6 Communities are living in fear of agents who are a danger to public safety themselves.
This isn’t about a few bad actors. It’s a system that hired someone like David Brouillette, who has a documented history of threatening women, and put him in a position of armed authority over immigrant communities. Now, DHS refuses to hold him accountable for his violence.
Instead of accountability, the Trump administration’s killing of innocent, unarmed people is steeped in false claims, chaos, and coverups. An investigation into the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis found that federal officials withheld evidence, including body camera footage, from local investigators for months, even as agents on the ground had warned early on that the deployment was reckless enough that “someone was going to die.”7
We won’t let this become normal. ICE’s violence has to stop, and it starts with accountability for agents like David Brouillette.
Thanks for all you do.
