Dear MoveOn member,
On July 7, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was murdered on his way to work in Texas.1 The workers who witnessed what happened are now locked in ICE concentration camps.2 His family is demanding answers, accountability, and protection for those witnesses, and his community immediately launched vigils to honor his memory.
Then, less than a week later, ICE took another life—in Biddeford, Maine, when ICE agents killed 25-year-old Johan Sebastián.3 A witness watched his partner fall to her knees looking at her husband’s body on the ground. His three-year-old daughter was standing next to her, crying, wearing a little pink backpack.4
ICE claimed that both of these men weaponized their vehicles, but in both cases, witnesses on the ground tell a different story. Lorenzo’s and Johan’s families deserve the truth. But we have to come together to let ICE and the Trump administration know that they won’t get away with terrorizing our communities. We need accountability NOW!
ICE paused traffic stops for less than 24 hours before Trump went to Truth Social to demand that ICE get “back to work.” But this is what the administration wants.5 Trump’s top priority is controlling our neighbors and pushing his anti-immigration agenda. This administration has been using the same playbook to terrorize our neighbors and take lives. While ICE just received $70 billion in taxpayer funding, our families are suffering and our communities are scared. But this is what they want.6
Just like you, people in your community are heartbroken and outraged by these latest ICE killings. They’re coming together to honor Lorenzo and Johan and demand accountability for ICE’s violence. Join a local action to remember their lives and demand justice for every person and family harmed by ICE. Will you honor the lives of Johan and Lorenzo and demand justice for every single person harmed by ICE’s reckless actions? We need investigations, accountability, and protection for every person detained in ICE facilities.
Right now, the media is paying attention to these latest ICE killings, but that attention won’t last on its own. Our task is to keep Lorenzo’s and Johan’s stories in the headlines, expose ICE’s out-of-control violence, and build the public pressure needed to force Congress and DHS to hold ICE agents accountable, end dangerous traffic stops, and cooperate with independent investigations.
Thanks for all you do.
