Thousands of school districts found their bank accounts in the red on July 2 after the Trump administration withheld $6.8 billion in education funds.1
Instead of receiving the funds—which had already been allocated to schools by law—districts got an email saying that no money would be disbursed while the Trump Department of Education does a “programmatic review.”2
This money pays for essentials such as before- and after-school programs, education in English as a second language, and academic enrichment for low-income students—and now schools have no way to pay for them.
Districts like Wake County, the largest in North Carolina, are sending emails to parents telling them to expect programs to be canceled and teaching positions to go unfilled because the district is missing $8.1 million in funding.3
Children who need this help the most will be harmed the most. Trump did that.
Now that Trump’s budget bill has been passed, Republican members of the House and Senate will be traveling their states extolling the supposed benefits of the bill.4
We need to work just as hard to remind people that truly damaging cutbacks are happening—and Trump did that.
Higher health care premiums and out-of-pocket costs for Medicare and Medicaid?5 Trump did that.
Gutting of FEMA and disaster relief in one of the worst flood seasons in history?6 Trump did that.
More-expensive student loan payments?7 Trump did that.
Destroying clean-energy incentives and projects?8 Trump did that.
This has to be the drumbeat from now until we can throw the MAGA majority out of Congress and bring the Trump destruction of our government to a grinding halt. Grab a Trump Did That sticker and put it on your laptop, your water bottle, your car—anywhere that the public will see.
