Good trouble. If you’ve heard that phrase, you probably know it’s part of the legacy of iconic civil rights leader and member of Congress from Georgia, John Lewis, who passed away five years ago this month.
That’s why on July 17, people across the country will come together in their communities for the “Good Trouble Lives On” national day of action to respond to the current attacks against our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind everyone that the power lies with us, the people.
Donald Trump knows that his billionaire-driven agenda is unpopular, so he’s attempting to silence our voices. They’ve cut health care for 17 million people; ignored due process, illegally deporting people; arrested, imprisoned, and threatened people for their political positions; deployed the National Guard to quell peaceful protests in LA; and are actively working to suppress our right to vote.
But when we work together, we can break through the Trump noise and make clear we are the majority, we won’t be silenced, and we are here for the fight ahead. That’s a message that will resonate nationwide on July 17.

Republicans in Congress are blatantly attempting to strip away our freedom to vote to further push their billionaire-backed agenda. Trump and Republicans are working to advance the SAVE Act, a bill that would require everyone to provide proof of citizenship when registering or re-registering to vote by presenting a passport or birth certificate.1 And they’re proposing this knowing that 21 million U.S. citizens of voting age do not have proof of citizenship readily available, only about half of American adults have a passport, and millions lack access to a paper copy of their birth certificate.
This legislation would provide huge hurdles to low-income voters, the millions upon millions of people who have ever changed their last name, young people, rural communities, people living on tribal lands, and unhoused people.

Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.” This famous quote from John Lewis is a call to join together for our collective liberation and not give up, even when the opposition seems insurmountable.
