Dear MoveOn member,
This weekend, Border Patrol agents executed Alex Jeffrey Pretti in the streets of Minneapolis, only two miles from where Renee Nicole Good was killed less than three weeks ago.1
Both were documenting what we’ve seen countless times in recent months: ICE agents ripping people of color from their cars, forcibly entering homes without a warrant, pointing their guns at peaceful protesters, and consistently using excessive force.2 And even now, as these out-of-control agents have killed two civilians within a month, this administration continues to defend these tactics as necessary and flat-out lie to the American people about what we are witnessing with our own eyes.3
Our communities deserve safety, dignity, and justice. This is the moment, and we must show up for Renee Nicole Good, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, Kieth Porter, 5-year-old Liam Ramos who was abducted by ICE, and countless others who have been irreparably harmed by ICE’s abuses. We all must be able to work, learn, and live full lives without the fear of government-sanctioned kidnapping.
The violence being inflicted by ICE agents is not random or circumstantial—it’s by design. Agents with virtually no training are being armed with rifles and sent to infiltrate our cities, while top ranking immigration officials encourage them to be aggressive, ramp up operations, and meet the administration’s goal of 3,000 daily ICE arrests, no matter who the victims may be.4
The horrors we are witnessing are not because of a broken system but rather the system working exactly as designed. ICE must be stopped. These agents are operating with zero accountability, and the harm they are inflicting on our communities is going completely unchecked.
Congress must stop funding this state-sanctioned violence and allowing these agents to act with impunity.
Last week, seven House Democrats voted with Republicans to advance a DHS funding bill that continues to fund ICE without any real reforms or guardrails.5 This is completely unacceptable. The Senate is voting on the funding bill this week, and our elected officials must stand up and protect the people they were elected to serve. What we are seeing in Minneapolis and in cities across the country is horrifying and a threat to every person in this country.
While Congress has failed to act, everyday people are stepping up. In the face of this assault, Minnesotans have shown up for their community in incredible ways. Despite sub-zero temperatures and increasing aggression from combative agents, Minnesotans have continued to protect their neighbors and push back against immigration enforcement by delivering groceries to people afraid to leave their homes and joining ICE observation groups.6
Thanks for all you do.
