Dear MoveOn member,

Elon Musk is the unelected incoming president of the United States of America.

Even though no one voted for him, it is clear Musk is calling the shots for the incoming Trump administration.

Musk has even moved into Mar-a-Lago and is reportedly spending $2,000 a night to sleep just a hundred feet away from Trump.¹

But why would Trump—who is notoriously intimidated by anyone who threatens his power—hand over the reins to Musk? It’s simple: because Musk spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars to get Trump elected.²

Musk is intimately involved in vetting candidates for senior administration jobs, has derailed a bipartisan budget deal, and is making plans to slash Social Security and Medicare.³

It is despicable that the richest man on Earth wields this much power over our government and our lives.

And all of this is happening before Trump even takes office. Which is why MoveOn must be prepared to hold Trump and Musk accountable in 2025. Can you make a $9 donation today to fight back against the oligarchy in the White House?

Kendall, Musk’s obsession with “government efficiency” is the peak of hypocrisy.

Almost every single dollar of Musk’s net worth can be pinned to government subsidies, contracts, and tax breaks—but Musk is planning on making sure the rest of us pay the price.⁴

Cut Social Security
Privatize Amtrak and the U.S. Postal Service
Slash Medicare and Medicaid
Deregulate child care
And so much more⁵

No wonder Trump calls the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) the “Manhattan Project of our time.”⁶ The plan is to basically nuke our economy and well-being.

But the progressive movement already has an advantage.

We don’t have to convince the average American that DOGE is terrible for our country—the majority already believes that. The vast majority of us also believe that Trump should choose qualified people over people who support his policies to run the government and that the wealthy should pay more in taxes, not less.^7,8

We need to capitalize on the momentum against Elon Musk, DOGE, and Trump’s other awful nominees. Will you donate $9?

		On Jan. 6, Lawmakers Remember the Carnage of 2021 in Sharply Different WaysBy Mary Clare Jalonick, The Associated PressWASHINGTON (AP) — Some lawmakers emotionally recalled the violence. Others said they’d rather move on. And some said it wasn’t violent at all.The certification Monday of Donald Trump’s presidential victory further exposed the divide, and the tension, among members of Congress over Jan. 6, 2021 — as Trump has called the bloody attack by his supporters “a day of love” and has promised to pardon rioters who have been convicted of crimes related to that day once he is in office.Unlike four years ago, when the joint session of Congress to count electoral votes was interrupted by rioters trying to break down the doors, there was very little drama this Jan. 6 and no overt tension in the room as lawmakers read out each state’s electoral votes. Vice President Kamala Harris gaveled down her own defeat. Democrats did not object to any of the votes.Standing beside windows where Trump’s supporters first broke into the building that day, Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats want to “serve as an example” for Republicans.The Democrats lost last year’s election, Schumer said, but “when you lose an election you roll up your sleeves and try for the next one. You don’t deny that you lost.”The rioters who violently breached the Capitol four years ago, breaking in after a brutal fight with police, were echoing Trump’s false claims that the election was stolen and that President Joe Biden’s win was “rigged.” Trump maintained — and still maintains — that he won the election even though it was certified by all 50 states and courts across the country reaffirmed Biden’s win.Four years later, the Republican Party is still divided over the attack. On Monday, as they gleefully certified Trump’s win, some GOP lawmakers made a point of downplaying the violence four years ago, defending the more than 1,250 rioters convicted of crimes.Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., posted on X early Monday morning that “individuals entered the Capitol, took photos, and explored the building before leaving,” and have since been “hunted down” and treated unjustly. Just after the joint session ended, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., repeated her plea that all of the rioters be pardoned and said “this country should never allow this type of abuse of our justice system again.”Other Republicans remembered the day differently — a signal that Trump’s pledge to pardon rioters could become politically fraught even within his own party. It’s unclear, so far, whether he will try to pardon all of them or just those who were not violent.“I was here,” said Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of Trump’s closest allies. “Ask the cops who got beaten up. Not everybody was violent, but there was definitely violence, and the people who defiled the Capitol and attacked police officers, they deserve to be held accountable.”Republican Sen. The group was trapped as people tried to beat the doors down below, and ducked below seats as rioters hunting lawmakers were rattling the doors behind them.Some members of that group — who have dubbed themselves the “gallery group” — gathered for a photo Monday. Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal posted the photo on X.“We will not forget,” she wrote.Metropolitan Police Officer Daniel Hodges, one of the hundreds of police officers who fought the rioters four years ago, sat in the gallery on Monday as Congress certified Trump’s win, a guest of California Sen. Adam Schiff.Hodges, who was captured on video crushed between two doors as some of the rioters beat him, said he found this year’s proceeding to be “very dry” — like it should have been four years ago, he said.Otherwise, he was marking the day by doing his job, like many of the other officers who spent the day protecting the city and members of Congress.“I was at work before this and I’m going back to work afterward,” he said.

		Failed WA candidate heads to D.C. to support Jan. 6 rioters and plot 3rd run for CongressStory by Tri-City Herald staff, January 3, 2025Failed Central Washington congressional candidate Jerrod Sessler says he’ll travel to Washington, D.C., next week to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the U.S. Capitol.He says he’s planning to raise funds for a third campaign to try ousting U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse after losing to him by 6 percentage points during the Nov. 5 general election.The Sunnyside Republican is next up for reelection in 2026.“Dan Newhouse used baseless and misleading lies about Jerrod Sessler to buy another two years as representative. Sessler is undeterred about continuing his efforts to give Central Washington the conservative they deserve,” a news release from Sessler’s campaign read.He reportedly has meetings with the Rescue Washington Project, an advisory commission called the Department of Government Efficiency and has plans to fund raise for his next campaign.Sessler, a Prosser businessman and former NASCAR regional circuit driver, has been vocal about his opposition to the prosecution of rioters who broke into the U.S. Capitol as Congress convened to certify the 2020 election results.At least nine people, including five police officers, died in connection to the event. About 1,600 have been charged with federal crimes tied to Jan. 6, and at least 1,000 have been sentenced, according to NBC Washington.The Navy veteran previously called Jan. 6 a “setup,” and has made frivolous and false claims about the results of the 2020 election. Sessler says he had attended a rally in support of then-President Donald Trump, but did not enter the Capitol building.He reiterated his views in the news release, saying the rioters involved were “innocent Americans.” He claims the “J6 atrocity” was a facade to cover up the “theft of the 2020 presidential election” and prevent Trump from taking office after the loss.Newhouse is one of the last two House Republicans still in office after voting to impeach Trump over his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the tail end of his first term.He has been a target of Trump since, with the former president endorsing both Sessler and Tiffany Smiley in the 2024 primary election to unseat Newhouse.If Sessler wants another shot at ousting Newhouse over his impeachment vote, he will need to file to run in May 2026 and then be a top-two finisher in the jungle primary election in August 2026.Sessler’s first try at defeating Newhouse ended in a fourth-place finish during the 2022 primary election.He rebounded two years later, though, placing first during the 2024 primary and outperformed fellow challenger Smiley.
