We are in an overwhelming crisis. After just over two weeks in office, the Trump administration has unleashed wave after wave of catastrophic attacks—even going so far as cutting off critical funding for tens of millions of Americans in the form of WIC, SNAP, Head Start, and children’s school programs. All the while handing over our government to the richest man on earth, Elon Musk.

This isn’t business as usual—this administration is rapidly consolidating and exercising power in egregious ways, testing the limits of how much they can get away with.

It’s time for Democrats to stick together, throw out the usual playbook, and do everything in their power to stop Trump’s assaults. Will you add your name to the petition to show Democrats that we need and want them to step up?

Democrats need to hear from us—their constituents and their voters. If enough of us sign this petition, it’ll send a clear signal that we’re counting on them to recognize the gravity of the situation and step up, and that we’ll be right there fighting alongside them when they do. 

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been a strong and vocal opponent of Trump and Republicans, and Senator Brian Schatz just pledged to use a procedural motion to halt nominees.1,2 And there are more hopeful signs, like the dozens of Democrats who rallied with grassroots groups outside the Treasury Department this week. But we need more than a few leaders speaking out and blocking Trump’s agenda. Halting this onslaught of attacks requires a principled and unified opposition that will take action to address the crisis at hand.

Donald Trump has been enacting a devastating agenda at lightning speed—from signing dozens of executive orders on his first day in office to his recent brazen attempt to freeze all federal spending. This has real impacts on people in the U.S. and globally—disrupting public services, eroding infrastructure and safety nets, and impacting jobs. 

Yet, the response from most Democratic elected officials hasn’t been enough to address the dire situation. This isn’t just a moment to vote down some nominees—it is an occasion that demands outspoken leadership. But it can’t be just a few voices. And we can’t tweet our way out of this. We are in need of a unified, principled opposition that takes bold action to meet the crisis at hand.

If Democrats don’t step up and use their power to block Trump’s agenda, this unprecedented consolidation of power will go unchecked. Meanwhile, children, families, schools, and communities will continue to deal with the impacts of Trump’s actions. Here are just a few things that Democrats in the Senate can do to stop or slow down Trump’s agenda:

  • Deny a Quorum: If Republicans don’t have 51 votes in the chamber, Democrats can walk out and shut down Senate business entirely.
  • Block Unanimous Consent: Object to every procedural shortcut, forcing Republicans to take the longest possible route for every step of confirming Trump’s nominees.
  • Max Out Debate Time: Use all 30 hours of debate on Cabinet nominees to run out the clock.
  • Delay and Disrupt: Force roll-call votes, quorum calls, and procedural delays to slow everything down.
  • Blanket Opposition: Democrats cannot continue to vote for Trump’s other nominees, helping to install more MAGA loyalists into powerful positions in the federal government while this power grab continues.
  • No Business as Usual: This is a constitutional crisis. Democrats must abandon the old rules and fight with everything they have.

Time is running out. Everyday people are counting on Democrats to use every tool they can to slow down or stop the Trump agenda. If Trump and his administration see that they can easily push through an agenda this toxic, there’s no telling what they’ll attempt down the road. And Democrats need to hear that they’ll have our appreciation if they unite and forcefully oppose the administration’s agenda.
