Dear MoveOn member,
Donald Trump isn’t governing—he’s cashing in.
Trump bought up to $6 million worth of corporate bonds in Boeing in August and September— just as the federal government awarded the company new multibillion-dollar contracts.1
He bought between $1 million and $5 million worth of Intel bonds in August, a week after his administration took a 10% stake in the company.2
He bought Meta bonds while pushing AI-friendly policy.3
We can’t become numb to this corruption.
No, we have to play the long game. In that long game, America learns from this catastrophe—and turns those lessons into laws, rules, and norms that prevent this from ever happening again.
Most working Americans abide by laws and norms. Most are kind and decent.
But there is growing rot at the top of our system. And its stench can no longer be ignored.
It’s the essence of Trump and his regime. It’s also, sadly, the moral squalor of too many rich and powerful Americans.
Just think about how Trump’s celebration of the Saudi crown prince who ordered the brutal killing of a Washington Post reporter has shown the character of the CEOs who flocked to the White House dinner to honor the prince because they want his money. Or how Trump has attempted to protect Jeffrey Epstein and all of the wealthy men associated with him, including himself.
We must resolve to prevent such moral rot from ever again taking over our nation.
And then we need to act on that resolve. To take hold of our collective power and organize. Because there are so many more of us than the squalor at the top. Trump’s greatest enemy is an organized citizenry.
That’s where MoveOn comes in. MoveOn’s superpower is grassroots organizing, and grassroots organizing is our long game—and critical to our getting out of this stench.
MoveOn has long been a trusted partner of mine, and their work is more urgent than ever, as they have infrastructure in every corner of our country, which is critical as we build our way out of this.
That means continuing to grow the No Kings movement (and, yes, they’re actively organizing No Kings 3 for early next year!), while also recruiting a new generation of courageous and authentic leaders to run for office and win, starting in the midterm elections next year.
But all of that organizing takes real resources, and my friends at MoveOn tell me that their fundraising has fallen sharply in recent weeks. I understand why, given the state of things, but we cannot afford for MoveOn to have to scale back its work.
Friends, I know times are tough. I know many of you are struggling to make ends meet while the ultra wealthy grow ever richer. If you can’t contribute right now, I completely understand.
But if you can spare even a few dollars, please know that your contribution will go directly toward the organizing work that is our only path forward—coordinating ever-growing No Kings protests, recruiting candidates who actually give a damn about working people, and building the movement that will outlast Trump and everyone like him.
The oligarchs want us to feel powerless. They want us exhausted, demoralized, and alone.
But we are not powerless. We are not alone. And we will not tire.
History will record this as a time when democracy was tested. Let it also record that we rose to meet that test—not with violence or despair, but with organization, with solidarity, and with an unshakeable commitment to the common good.
