Move On – December 11, 2024

Posted on December 11, 2024

Sign the petition to demand Congress BLOCK any attempts by the Trump administration to eliminate the Department of Education!

Dear MoveOn member,

Public education in this country is under attack. And Trump has already made clear his intentions to undermine public education even further at every turn—including the extreme proposal to completely eliminate the Department of Education (DOE).

“One other thing I’ll be doing very early in the administration is closing up the Department of Education,” Trump stated back in 2023, warning that he would be “sending all education and education work and needs back to the states.”1

And in preparation for Trump’s second presidency, conservative, anti-public-education organizations like the American Culture Project are pushing for abolishing the Department of Education to be a priority. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who will be heading the new “Department of Government Efficiency,” seem to be on board.2 And just weeks after the election, a Republican senator introduced legislation to dismantle the DOE.3

There are checks and balances in our democracy, and our elected officials are still beholden to their constituents. Trump can’t eliminate a federal department without approval from Congress. We have to take action NOW to make it clear to our elected officials that they cannot allow the Department of Education to be abolished.

Add your name to the petition and let members of Congress know that Americans expect them to block any attempts to abolish the DOE!

Tell Congress: Block any attempts by the Trump administration to eliminate the Department of Education!

Sign my petition

Protecting students from discrimination.

Funding schools with high low-income student populations.

Bolstering school programs that support students with disabilities.

Administering federal student loans.

Collecting data and reporting out on schools across the country.

Working toward equal access to education.

That’s the role of the Department of Education and what’s at risk if Trump is successful in abolishing the DOE.

And he won’t stop there. Project 2025 has an entire section focused on reshaping—or, more accurately, dismantling—our public education system and a plan to drain all of our resources to reroute to private education. The plan not only includes eliminating the DOE but also getting rid of teachers unions, ending federal funding, and gutting any programs that support equity and inclusion, even free school lunch programs and Head Start.4

We are not going backward. Will you sign the petition and urge Congress to vote NO on any attempts to eliminate the DOE?

K-12 public schools are massively underfunded by more than $150 BILLION annually—meaning educators are continually asked to do more for less, as their own wages stagnate.5 And it’s the 30 million students in these underfunded districts that pay the price long-term.6 This “opportunity gap,” as it’s called, affects Black children disproportionately, who are three times more likely to reside in districts that are “chronically underfunded.”7

By sending education “back to the states,” Trump will be worsening existing inequities in our public education system. Everyone deserves to have access to a quality education—regardless of who they are or where they live. We have to fight for the future of our children’s education. We have to fight to protect the DOE.

Trump and MAGA Republicans intend to dismantle public education as we know it. Add your name to the petition to defend the Department of Education and demand that our government make the investments our children and educators deserve.

Thanks for all you do.

As usual at the pizza location, Tri-City Democrats will order several pizzas to share. We'll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group. Some of our generous members are likely to purchase pitchers of beer to share. If you want the salad bar or soft drinks, you are on your own for those items.

We have scheduled the 'Save our Wild Salmon' group to come talk to us about the Snake River Dams and we will have 'Hate Has no Home Here' signs available.

    April 11, 2026  9:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Columbia Basin College Gjerde Center 2600 N. 20th Ave., Pasco, WA 99301

Residents of Washington’s 8th Legislative District are invited to attend a town hall meeting with their state lawmakers on Saturday, April 11. Sen. Matt Boehnke, R-Kennewick, Rep. Stephanie Barnard, R-Pasco, and Rep. April Connors, R-Kennewick, will provide an overview of the 2026 legislative session and take questions from attendees.

The meeting will cover key issues, including passage of a new state income tax, capital budget investments, the lawmakers’ opposition to the state’s proposal to site a home for sexually violent predators in Kennewick, and legislation that passed or failed during the 60-day session.

Constituents are encouraged to attend, ask questions and share their perspectives on issues affecting their families and communities.

“We’re looking forward to meeting with constituents, answering questions about the 2026 session, hearing directly about the concerns they want addressed, and discussing how decisions made by the Legislature will affect our district now and in the future,” the lawmakers said.

Does the current water crisis in the Colorado River basin predict the future for Eastern Washington rivers?

    REGISTER HERE

Most experts agree that how our principal river systems are managed will tell the story. Water is essential for continued growth and economic success for the region, which is entering its third consecutive drought year. Reservoir storage in the Cascades is far below average with little sign of recovery.

The federal Bureau of Reclamation's latest water supply forecast says that irrigators in the Yakima Basin may receive less than half of their full entitlement this year. And it's not just Washington's eighty-billion-dollar agriculture industry that depends on water. The rivers provide water for our cities and industry, generate electricity, move all manner of commodities, and provide for our unique quality of life.
