Tell Microsoft to STOP providing technology that facilitates warfare—sign the petition.
Dear MoveOn member,
Microsoft isn’t just a software company—it’s one of the largest defense contractors in America, lending its technology infrastructure to military conflicts that have killed tens of thousands of people. Microsoft’s AI and surveillance tools are being used to wage war in Gaza, Iran, and beyond.
Microsoft holds billions of dollars in federal contracts, including a share of a $9 billion Department of Defense contract called Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability.1 These business arrangements are the technological backbone of active military operations.
Leading tech companies in the United States should be investing in our communities, not in waging wars around the globe.
The use of AI in warfare causes more death and destruction. In its ongoing genocidal attack on Gaza, the Israeli military has used AI with reportedly very little human oversight to kill more than 72,000 Palestinians.2
That’s why we’re demanding that Microsoft, which has longstanding AI contracts with the U.S. and Israeli militaries, stop providing technology that facilitates warfare.3
Tell Microsoft: Stop powering war!
When Israel attacked Gaza in October 2023, Microsoft initially increased its support for the Israeli military.4 But after media reports and pushback from its employees, the tech giant blocked its Azure cloud services from intercepting and storing audio from millions of phone calls made by Palestinians.5
Public pressure campaigns work, and Microsoft’s leadership must continue to rein in the use of technology that kills children, whether in Gaza or Iran.
We already know AI often makes mistakes—which can become deadly in combat. Lavender, one of Israel’s AI products used in the Gaza genocide, has been shown to be wrong 10% of the time, and its use has dangerously relaxed oversight: “Soldiers attacked human targets without corroborating Lavender’s predictions at all.”6
As we witness this horrific new war unfold in Iran, remember: Microsoft is not just a bystander in these conflicts. By supplying the tools that make modern warfare possible, the company shares responsibility for its consequences.
That’s why we’re demanding that Microsoft:
- Immediately cease providing AI support for military applications
- Adopt a clear policy against providing technology that facilitates warfare
Microsoft has deep relationships across Washington and wields enormous influence over how the U.S. government and its allies wage war. That influence comes with responsibility.
Thanks for all you do.
